I was a photography student and my cousin did rally driving. He asked me to take some photos of an event he was in. He told me that you get the best photos from standing in the riskiest spots. There were multiple stages, Dirt track, hill climb, forest, quarry etc. Adrenaline filled fun, but I wouldn't do it again. Don't try to photograph the quarry stages.... they kill cameras.

Back in the 80's the crowd was so crazy close that the mechanics had to remove actual fingers out of the car's parts in between stages...it was apparently a thing to try to touch a 600hp car coming towards you at 120mph. There a documentary "queen of speed" about Michelle Mouton where you see them remove a couple of fingers from the engine's cooler grid.

THIS is why we watch Rally driving!! Those narrow streets are about as wide as a Dodge Ram truck and these guys are travelling at Freeway speeds and higher as they scream through them!! The cars vary from Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive but most top end Pro and Works cars are 4 wheel drive. Each set up gives some spectacular slides and drifts. The four rules for a true rally driver are...
    1. Flat out,
    2. Flat out and sideways,
    3. Flat out and Airbourne,
    4. Flat out and Both.

You should find some Group B stuff.
Back in the day, the top tier of rally drove Group B cars. These cars were, crazy light, crazy powerful and insanely fast as a result.
    How fast?
Even the rally community realised that they were too much and banned them. Especially following a spate of fatal accidents. Therr were even Lamborghini, Porsche and Ferrari group B cars.
Can you imagine doing this in something as fast as a Lamborghini?
I think there's a documentary out there about them. I'll see if it's on youtube.

About that backseat driver thing.. One of the absolut best rally drivers in the world, Tommi Mäkinen, had a fall out with his co-driver and telling him he was just there for the rules, not really necessary. So he got pissed and left 10 min before the race. Tommi payed one of the homeless people in town to ride with him, and the recording from that race is hysterical: the homeless guy keeps yelling at Tommi to slow down and calls him an idiot, asshole etc. But Tommi proved his point about the race, he won, of course. But got later disqualified after his co-driver told the managment what happend..

a lot of the vids with the crowds right by the road where from the 80s group b days. the drivers actually complained. then perth west aus pulled a fast one in its inaugral wrc round and introduced a special stage which was a lap in the park in the city where fans could come and watch the rally but be at a safe distance. this took off and now all rallies have special stages for spectators to come and watch the cars in safety. (NZ last year designed a special stage that was unique in that the entire stage was visible from any point so fans got the full experience.
