Interested to know why the standard OEM tyres weren't the ones that were tested, as opposed to the cheapest possible?
se1z Yeah i agree.. The whole point isnt if better tires make a major impact.. its is other tires would make a major impact vs STOCK tires.
se1z Skews the results so no clue. Probably didn't want to upset a brand by having another product do better.
se1z The stock tyres on the 86 aren't great anyway; but by doing it this way it eliminates wheel size/weight as a variable.
se1z Yes, Moog and Marty fucked up by not using stock 86 tires which are the same shitty tires that Toyota puts on their Prius for little grip to get better MPG.
se1z Try not to look at it as stock tyres vs upgraded tyres but a car that favors suspension over a car that favors tyre. If you want to see the biggest difference in what the two can do then you find as big a gap as possible. Thats why they didnt buy cheap $400 coilover they went with BC's which run around 1,000 US dollars. This way you see if a car is faster when it reaches the limitation of the tires or the suspension first.
LOL. A Toyota 86 with Subaru rims driven by a man wearing Nismo race suit.
Leonardo Oktavianus Toyota 86 with Subaru rims? Sounds like a BRZ lol.
Should of gotten the lap times for a stock 86 without any modifications at all. I want to see just how much these upgrades actually benefit you.
"Should have", goddamnit.
astropapi1 Cool.
+astropapi1 L
+Retz - exactly , I'm more interested in the difference in 2 of the same vehicle with similar mileage , then a vehicle with less , and one with more.
+Retz When u learn english from faketaxi..
but why are you purposely finding cheap tires for the coilover setup instead of using stock tires
+Wei Wang And why did they use Cheap coilovers over Bilstein, Ohlins, Penske etc... ?! Because 99% of the people will do so , cheap mods , eBay mods , shitty mods. People prefer to spent 800€ on a loud exhaust and buy budget chassis/suspension parts and tire + buy an exhaust give you a chance to get a free sick stickers too ! Sarcasm ?! Noooo way
Guy asked if coilovers or tires are better upgrades, nothing else, therefore the only modification done should be coilover on one car and tires on another, much logic. To add, the car has cheap coilovers, so let's put on some cheap tires to compensate, muuuuch logic
GT86 come with shitty eco tire as well so that didn't change much imo
+Wei Wang Yup. Poor video. Bad logic.
+Wei Wang The stock tires are cheap, so it really wouldn't change anything. Same tires they use on the Prius.
Should've done a lap with the stock 86 for good measure
Kevin Tran Agreed. It's always good to have a baseline when comparing products
Kevin Tran Agreed. I LOVE MCM, but the scientist in me screams at the screen during half their experiments/testing. Guys, fly me to Australia, feed me some crap tofu and I will personally assist you with proper scientific methodology.
Kevin Tran Agreed. Lap done with stock 86 on stock Prius tires that they come with from factory. Coilover 86 should have had new stock Prius tires installed.
Kevin Tran They might not have had a car with the factory tires, and anyway, the test they did conduct answered the question the letter posed: good tires and stock suspension is faster than coilovers.
DMStraylight If Moog and Marty did not have an 86 with factory tires, they should have bought them and used them on the coilover car. Reason being is the stock 86 tires are the same tires Toyota uses on their Prius. This is what everyone wanted to see. I bet the $69 tires are better than stock.
Lets keep it contained: Feel free to insert all your 86/BRZ/FR-S arguments here...
Mighty Car Mods
something something Subaru better. Something something how dare you. Something something called GT-86. Something something enough horsepower.
RABBLE!!!!! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!
+CasualCannabis e85, C.A.I, Exhaust would do that
CasualCannabis you sir have no real concept of a real tuner car hahah
Mighty Car Mods Do you reckon the body panels would fit my honda?
Always upgrade in this order;
-tires (maybe wheels too)
-brakes and/or suspension depending on how good the OEM brakes are
-weight reduction (semi optional but recommended)
-power
This is the right order. And the safe way to do it. Way to many people go power and suspension but ignore brakes and tires.
In the end, tires are everything. Everything you do is translated to through the tires. You can mod all you want and if the tires are crap, it wont matter.
+Chad Bremer I normally do weight reduction, tyre's, then power. Is that okay? That's what me and my friend did on my friends Track day VW Golf..
Great info thanks :)
- Jake - wieght reduction can really be done at any time, but rubber is still the most important and should be first.
+Chad Bremer where did they get the tyres?
***** tires are a consumable part. If you can not afford that, you can not afford the modding in general.
I dunno why they downgraded the tyres from the stock hoops. Isnt this a comparison of stock tyres and good suspension versus good tyres and stock suspension? You should give the 'good tyre' car rubbish suspension then.
They're trying to sell Bridgestones
They did. Did you watch the video? They just put good and good together at the end to see how both affects it together.
+Hizashi25 no they didn't. They took the standard tyres off and replaced them with literally the cheapest tyres they could find. I know stock tyres aren't usually very good but they're better than that rubbish.
Most people have a set of "track" tires and another set of "day-to-day" tires. So, following that line of thought, if you spent money on the coil overs(probably not the correct spelling, non native English speaker), you wouldn't have the money for a good set of tires.
I think they should have used 1 year old tires instead of new cheap one's as that's probably what one contemplating Tires or Coilovers has to work with !
15 minutes of my day with you is enough
5:10 bottom right corner it says "will it fit my honda?" Moogs got a honda its confirmed pretty surr
Sure
I highly doubt it is. He mentioned he had Toyota coolant. Supra maybe? Lol but who knows, we'll just have to wait and see.
He already owned an s2k recently so why would he buy another Honda? Besides the "will it fit my Honda" is a meme so...
zims50 Maybe an ae86 O.O
zims50 it's an MR2. I hope it's an MR2!
The car tyres were named " _fuck shit_ " thats why you couldnt hear it.
Awesome! Lets see a side by side comparison of name brand coilovers verses $700 ebay coilovers
14:02 Moog said Toyota coolant!!! Toyota Supra confirmed!!!
alex cadenas no dood its a starlet
alex cadenas Maybe it's that Supra in the intro 0:23
Oh come on dude, a Supra is so much cooler than a Starlet!
alex cadenas AE86.....................
alex cadenas I bet it's a JDM Chaser
the number plate on the red 86 is just genius.
TOY8T6 , o and a replaced for the 86 , in case you didnt notice :D
Great to see you guys working on the 86 platform and loving it like true car enthusiasts!
Mighty Car Mods Great video. Many tuners needed to know if they should go with tires or suspension first.
It's been tooo too long. Do another series or some affordable mod diy vids man, it feels like forever since we seen some. Also, you guys watch Haggard Garage? Moog is life.
I knew somebody would mention them in this video lol Haggard Garage is life!!
Jimmy Neutron I dislike their videos
***** lol why the hell are you telling me like i give a damn?
Jimmy Neutron YESSS. Idk if its the combination of almost daily video releases or the DIY garage mechanic work or the overall dynamic of all the guys on the channel. Either way their fucking fantastic.
***** That sucks :/
It's been way too long!! I get so hype when a new video comes out!
I gotta say, the production value has gona waay up with these couple of new videos. Now, Marty's words doesn't get interrupted every couple of seconds (looks sternly at Moog), and you guys are making an awesome job of presenting. Keep it up!
One of the best episodes yet guys
I thought it was pretty oblivious tyres would be better performance improvement.
+Omar I obvious?
***** yuuuup. auto-correct....
+Omar I lol thought so :p
It's not obvious to people who spend money on turbos/headers, coil overs, etc. on stock tires lol.
I just wonder how much of an improvement the nice tires would have been over average tires, not cheapest possible ones. They would have definitely been better but maybe not such a big gap in time.
Well the other interesting email they were referring to is the Roadkill collab
How do you know?
bOwToMeE0 Facebook
bOwToMeE0 Because I don't live in a cave
Its been a long time since you guys posted a video. Good to see another mighty mod car video
素晴らしい実験と検証結果だと思います!
お疲れさまでした!!
Toyota coolant? Do i smell moog getting a 2jz supra? jeez...
Sounds that way. Cannot wait!
I hope
1UZ obviously
SylxTV 1uz is life!
Maybe an ae86
Such a great test! This is mad! Well done on choosing the same rims for both cars
Would have been nice to have the results posted after the last run or end of the video so I didn't have to be rewinding and fast forwarding to find the times and compile them..... Something like this would have been nice:
Tires = 00:50:82
Coils = 00:52:02
Ti+Co = 00:49:74
Post the results next time Moog!
you guys should both build the same car and see who gets the better street cred. Also who loses has to buy a bmw
Aquan Robinson BMWs are cool. E46 M3 any one? :)
TassieLorenzo E30!
No i'm not saying its bad, i just wanted them to explore a new type of car company . hiimbrandon100 :)
Any m3 is nothing to be ashamed of!
Christian Tolentino Except the new saloon
Nice job guys! I am looking forward to the new upcoming episodes!
This video is fantastic! Thanks guys. Been watching a long time and this one has been the most useful for me yet!
I feel like the car with coilovers should have kept the original tyres that are factory fitted, would have been a little more fair, but a good show of the benefits of good quality tyres over budget ones that shouldn't go near a car if honest.
B1GDAV3 Agreed. Should have kept the stock, shitty 86 tires that are the same tires that Toyota puts on their Prius.
The Stock 86' tires are Prius tyres anyway, already shit. XD
One of the best episodes of mcm
This was incredibly informative. I'm in the market for coilovers and performance tires and I did wonder which would have more of an impact. Question answered. Maaaad props.
Cool video. It seems to me the coilover car should have had the factory tires and rims, but, this is good info too.
GunFun ZS I saw someone reposted an official response to a similar statement below. That makes good sense.
Great video. You guys should do a performance comparison on the track between small wheels (14" - 15") and big ones (17"+) using the same tire on a low horsepower car like a Miata. Or even wheels of the same size but different weights. People have argued about it for so long. It would be nice to see the difference. My friends and I are building a race car 1999 318is. They want to go with 8 kilo 16s and i want 5 kilo 15s. There argument is that the extra traction will make up for the loss in acceleration. Please bust this myth!
+Noah Hambayi Go 15's with a section width (tire) as close as you can to the 16" tire they want. If you can split the difference in weight (or stay closer to the 15's overall weight), the smaller diameter, reduced rotational mass and lower COG will ALL be a benefit. Without knowing the specs of the two wheel and tire combos it's hard to say definitively, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that the 16's won't give all that much more grip and the acceleration loss coming out of turns can cost you a LOT of time in a track environment...FWIW I've been building VW's and a few other random makes/models for track/Rally use for many many moons.
Love the aerial shots!
Been waiting for 4 weeks for a 16minute episode.. more videos please!
Haggard garage is better
autobotras bahaha go home your drunk
Wtf? Haggard is a bunch of stupid fuckin kids. Their channel sucks
It's a joke ffs
I actually agree now... They upload regularly and their vids are fun.
turbohayabusa01 You must not know how to have fun then.
More 86 content, please!!
Thanks for the Voltron reference. Awesome.
Those Potenzas come stock on my Fiesta ST and I must say they are great! Grip very well even in wet conditions.
Dont think thats too fair tho. Its like you either spend your money on coilovers and keep the stock tires or you go for the good tires. You guys should have used stock tires on the one with good coilovers. B/c no one would go for tires that costs 69/corner.
+es3502012 They already come with shit tires.
actually only thingtheycome with are shit size. the primacy isnt best on a trarck but i can guarantee u they ar ebetter than a 69 $ tire lolz
you*
are*
Mighty Car Mods: There is no substitute :D
You guys make the internet even more addictive.
Love you guys! You guys are my inspiration for my videos!
The coil overs should have at least had stock tires
stock tires are prius tires. they made a good move
Why did you guys use cheap tyres? The guy from the email doesn't need to sell the stock tyres to buy the Coilovers.
***** Agreed. They should have stuck to stock tires which are the same tires Toyota uses on their Prius.
***** Its because most people blow all their money on coil overs and cheap out on tires after burning the old ones off doing skids.
I doubt someone considering investing in raing tyres would buy cheap ones just to save for other parts.
The reason the GT86 goes sideways so much is because of those Prius tyres, the budget ones represent worst case scenario... Tyres were always going to win this, I think they wanted to show the difference between good and bad tyres mostly
***** It's possible neither of the 86es they used in the video had factory tires. Would have been nice to know for sure, but oh well.
There is nothing more entertaining than watching the boys with English subtitles turned ON.
The tires upgrade is the most underrated and overviewed mod, specially if you are considering the high end one like Michelin Cup 2s
Why did you change the tires on the coil over 86? Wouldn't it have been better to leave it stock. Like you didn't buy the cheapest springs for the tire 86. Just wondering.
111222333gabe Agreed. Moog and Marty fucked up the coilover 86 by not keeping / installing new stock tires which happen to be the same tires Toyota puts on their Prius.
111222333gabe I'm guessing they didn't have a set of stock tires offhand. Notice the wheels and tires on the car as it's driving into the shop. Though I agree they should have sourced a set of stock tires and rims for the test.
111222333gabe The one with the coilovers didnt have stock wheels to begin with. a good comparison is having the same wheels on both vehicles, which is why they switched to legacy wheels rather than whatever different wheels were on each car.
111222333gabe Bridgestone being splattered all over the clip, and the cheap name one bleeped off, it makes my commercial alarm go off. I think the bridgies against oem's would not give the effect they were looking for.MCM is becoming mainstream, and we will start seeing more of this.
Haven't watched the video yet, but I'm going to throw a guess out that tires are going to make more of a difference than coilovers will..
The prius tires aren't so great, so the grip level isn't high enough to take advantage of a stiffer suspension
Dee Jay Totally agreed and I haven't watched the video yet either. I couldn't watch it after seeing that they didn't even use the shitty, stock Prius tires! WTF were Moog and Marty thinking? I bet the $69 tires were better than stock.
Plus, they didn't even start out by doing a lap completely stock for total comparison.
Dee Jay I wish they'd make a pure gas Prius. I'd think about buying it then.
Though I am pretty surprised to learn they use the same tires on the 86
I have those coilovers on my Jeep Patriot. Absolutely amazing results with them. Stanced it out nicely with a decent ride for maybe 1.5" of travel lol. If I lift them up and soften the dampers, they ride great in town!
love this show from the Philippines. keep rocking Moog and Marty it's go na be madddddd
would that fit in tha honda ?
"Let's go home and get some tofu man" - Moog
Fun Facts DEJA VU
By other interesting things they mean the upcoming collaboration with Roadkill. Can't wait!!
love what theses guys do
I fully expected tires to out perform coilovers; but do both properly and get awesome track times.
What about cheap tires on stock car?
They did...
no, they did expensive tires on a stock car and cheap tires on a car with coil overs, then they did expensive tires on coil overs, but no run with cheap tires on a stock car. they completely missed the base line run.
Oh yeah, you're right.
these guys are so bloody MAAAD. I absolutely love these guys I have to find a way to represent!
Completely stock mixed into this would also be nice to see. It would give another great data point; how much do the upgrades improve the car, if they do at all.
Wanted to see the stock car on stock tires :(
riiskay Yes, should have been stock 86 on the stock shitty Prius tires that 86's come with.
riiskay Ne1ld0 This is what MCM had to say about that
"Good question and there's a couple of reasons:
1) If the video was for Australian audiences only it would make sense but the 86 comes with a variety of different tyre options for different territories so a 'standard' test would not be standardised for other regions, and most of our audience is actually overseas.
2) Most people in the automotive blogosphere already know what tyres come on the 86/Prius in Australia (there's so many arguments about them and online rantings from unhappy owners already) and we don't really want to get into a brand debate on screen because it's not the point of the video to simply compare tyres (We've done that already which you can see on our channel)
3) For anyone with a car that's NOT an 86 (99.5% of the people watching), the results are more relevant because it's comparing items that are commonly available for any car no matter how new or old it is."
Also the blue one didn't have the stock wheels or tires in the first place.
Ne1ld0 YO ME METÍ. A SU PAGINA POR QUE MR GUSTO. UNA IMAGEN MUY AMOROSA Y TIERNA PERO AQUÍ NO ENCONTRABA. NADA PURA PORNOGRAFÍA. AUTOS ETC. YO PUSE ESPAÑOL Y SALE TODO EN INGLÉS NO ME GUSTO NADA SU PÁGINA GRACIAS
wheres the fun in more traction..?
atheosxgaming To carry more speed through corners without sliding, thus being able to make up for your car's relative inability to gain speed on straights. Momentum cars are fun. The "illusion of speed" from Toyota's decision to deliberately emasculate the grip capabilities of their car is not fun.
atheosxgaming Doing skids is a lot of fun but being able to carry a ton of speed through corners has it's own thrill
No traction i fun though...
Spinning is totally winning! ;)
FussiestBore3 But a sliding car is a slow car. That's why in circuit racing, you never see slides unless the driver loses control. The whole point of driving a low-power, low-weight car such as an 86 is to carry as much speed through the turns as possible.
Mighty Car Mods Definitely enjoyed the video. Drove an old friends 86 (AKA the FR-S here in the States) and enjoyed it. Been to the track in a beater Honda Accord and will agree that suspension is a must. But then again, the bushings in my Accord were trashed. Keep up the awesome videos!
Great netball catch man.
Under 301 club
1j or 2j swapped chassis or a supra
Darrin Hillier 1jz already happened in the past loll
***** 2jz's use from factory, toyota red coolant.
Source: have supra
Darrin Hillier Its a Toyota Supra because in a few videos ago they were talking about a 2JZ engine and now they're talking about a Toyota so 2JZ and a Toyota kind of add up to a Toyota Supra.
DDPants Its a Toyota Supra because in a few videos ago they were talking about a 2JZ engine and now they're talking about a Toyota so 2JZ and a Toyota kind of add up to a Toyota Supra.
Love the series guys please keep up the good work :)
not watched this channel for a while.. production standards have really gone up... keep up the progression
*****
Toyota coolant, everyone loves it? Toyota supra mk4 confirmed!
Also there is s supra in he intro! It's got to be it
Milkman69ner Its a Toyota Supra because in a few videos ago they were talking about a 2JZ engine and now they're talking about a Toyota so 2JZ and a Toyota kind of add up to a Toyota Supra.
Well there's always the aristo or some lexus that would use the same coolant in s 2jz but I agree it's more than likely a supra
Toyota Chaser Jzx100 mk 2.
It's been in other vids too
Mighty Car Mods
You guys are awesome and the show being so well made, while still being kind of basic makes it just sooo much cooler.
If you ever need a place to crash and want to visit the Octoberfest, you would always be welcome :D
Minimalistic regards, from Munich!
Ps: feature some more kei cars, they are wicked! ;)
Great job equalizing the two cars
I'm still desturbed by the spelling of tyres and tires.
Moog, we still are Homo sapiens...
Hi guys I'm from the UK I tryed the oil catch can brilliant little thing after 2000 miles I had about a tea spoon of oil init so yeah it works I've watched ever episode love it.
cheeky hint at the collab with roadkill there at the end ;) Can't wait for that episode/episodes. love both shows ;)
Tires or tyres
Braden Wuesthoff Both.
Braden Wuesthoff Center or centre? Cookie or biscuit? Elevator or lift?
Braden Wuesthoff I have sets of both: daily tires and track day tyres. I have lots of turn signal fluid too.
MrPlayboy28 Tyres, centre, Cookie and Lift
Cob, bap, roll or bun? I think Cob personally
honestly guys. im kinda disappointed in this test. i love you guys and your videos are mad but you guys really missed out on how to do this test where it made sense.
firstly. those bridgestone's are NOT mad sticky track day tires. not even close. Toyo PROXES R1R are a good example, or Nitto NT05's probably have twice the grip of those bridgestones. There are many others from Pilot Sport Cup 2's to others. The only thing those Bridgestone are good at is low road noise and wet grip. they're a great street tire. dont get me wrong. But those are not track tires.
Now on the coilover car. I'm ok with BC coils. But you should have used the same stock tire. period. Also you should have used to stock rims. They're aluminum and super light.
that would have told us something. nobody is running an fr-s with those wheels. nobody. cept maybe you guys. everyone else, is most likely on stock wheel for this test to make any sense.
can you do this test again, except, maybe with better conditions like.... my suggestions?
Tyres can be very personal. I buy nothing but Vredestein. Why? They rarely win tests unlike f.e. Michelin, but years ago I've spun out 2 times with no warning on Michelin tyres and had one blow out on me. I had a company car as well back then, on which I had Pirelli, Michelin and Vredestein, the latter pleasantly surprising me, so I tried them on my own car. Many different types of Vredestein tyres on many different cars later, with other brands in between that came on those cars (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Uniroyal, Kleber...), and I'm simply locked in the brand more and more, some were better than others, but never a disappointment and never even close to dangerous.
Also I'm pretty sure they're sponsored by Bridgestone, considering they've used them on many projects and they avoid mentioning other brand names, just like the the Castrol oils, Halltech ecu's, AMauto...
Christian Williamson a bit too conceited you are. YOUR SUGGESTIONS?🤣
Product placement features heavily in this sort of thing, which is OK, but the target audience here is about ~17yrs old, and the last thing anyone wants is lots of kids banging into each other on cold RSpecs. On the street.
Maybe not on this dinky track, but you need to dry sump (Subaru boxers) if you track R Specs in anger, because of oil scavenging across the heads. At full song, one head runs dry mid corner, and it detonates on exit.
Until you fix this, Subarus are great fun, but risky choice for seriously fettled track times. Particularly in a loan car..
MCM must invest significant effort into the-clay-they-can-get. Bridgestone will sell plenty of tyres, to people who need them, and the guys can eventually buy a restaurant, which is fine. Good luck to them!
bridgestones are great track tires for one. two are you gonna fork up the 800 to 1000 dollars those tires cost?
Two normal super talented dudes. Thanks for answering the million dollar question.
Awesome intro guys!!!
please stop calling it an 86 it makes us ae86 owners cri
zum It IS a Toyota 86 though, it's what Toyota named it. The other model was an AE86, so I fail to see any problems here.
wowtek421 yes but the ae86s nickname and what everyone called it was just 86
Way do you want us to call the newer 86s then?
Your logic is crap.
All the people I know call ae86's "ae's"... Or hatchi.
Ethan Jorge well im american so we call them frs's but if its a gt86 just call it an gt86.
hows that logic for ya?
finally a proper car episode
Love the exchanges pertaining to Cheryl. Always make me laugh.
Added KW Coilovers to my 16v 92 VW GTI. Sticks like glue while retaining a comfy ride. Falken 50 series tires stick well. No complaints.
In all reality it depends on the car you're starting with. If you have an old car or family style car that was never meant for anything sporty than a better suspension setup is going to be better no matter what rubber you have.
I would suggest testing the lean of the car in corners before making a decision.
Mighty Car Mods is great. Thank you for what you do.
You gotta admit, those coil overs one the blue one looked damn good!
It's been a while! Great to see new video. Thanks!
MCM is love, MCM is life!
absolutely love the yotas...
Don't knock your scientific credentials guys: that was a great test; and way better controlled variables than 99% of stuff out there! Outstanding work dudes
bloody good episode idea!
Love being a Tyre fitter, great trade 👌
Best car show on UA-cam
i love all you are videos you guys are awesome
U guys rock! keep up the awesome work!
Good work guys 👍🏻
Marty at the end "You should see what she does with a bat" hahaha wut mate ? Love this channel !
Like Voltron! Nice one Fellas, Love the video as usual! Thanks!
