If anyone doesn't already know, the Optimus Prime Lego set was designed by Joe Kyde, who previously was a fan turned veteran Transformers designer at Hasbro. He was responsible dozens of figures, including for the celebrated "Thrilling 30"/Generations Springer and Sandstorm figures from 2013.
Simon, first of all, tons of respect for giving credit where credit is due to the other builders. That being said, your mods, though simple are extraordinary and well received. Home run again sir!
Thank you so much Zealot! Making this video and tuning the modifications took way longer than expected (hence the delay in publishing the video). But the end result looks great and I'm happy that I've been able to showcase other peoples mods and also provide supporting information should people want to modify their Optimus Prime Lego set too. Have a superb week ahead!
Great video as usual, Simon! I think the leg joint mod makes a massive difference and adds a lot of dynamism to the set. "To modify the head you need a handful of parts." For the third mod, you need a slightly larger handful of parts lol. Looks really great!
Aww that's really nice to hear Drihva! If you are planning on doing the 'leg/knee' mod to your Optimus please note that the designer of that mod as now published a 'version 3' (I built version 1 and showcased it my video). So if you go to his page on Rebrickable I recommend just going with version 3, ordering the parts from the inventory he has specified and going with that. Some of my part colour changes still apply, but not all, so that's just something to be aware of. All the best with your build and mods!
Sounds good Ian, I think if do decide to go with them you'll be happy with the improved model. I found the Trailer build to be a lot of fun in particular. Cheers, Simon
Simon, thank you so very much for doing all this work, to make these models so much better. I am only sorry I only just found your channel and information TODAY. I have many of the sets that you have added improvements on, and I cannot wait to change this one specifically! Thank you so much, well done!
Hi Stephen, you are welcome and it is always good to hear from fellow Lego enthusiasts who enjoy modifying sets as much as I do! I think you will particularly enjoy building the Trailer if you do decide to go with that build. Have fun!
@@CraftedBricks I would LOVE to do that trailer as well, but I almost always have him in robot form. Have you considered doing any mods to the UCS Millennium Falcon? Like, making it less flimsy and rickety? Its just so fragile, I wouldn't know where to even start in order to do this myself. I am also really only about 2 years into the hobby. Thank you again!
Sounds good re your Optimus, I think the knee & mods are the way to go for you then! The knee mod is going to give more option in terms of posing Optimus for display. As for the UC Falcon, I've no plans to build the standard model or mod it. I actually plan to use my standard set (unbuilt) to eventually build this: www.brickvault.toys/en-au/products/millennium-falcon-minifig-scale ...proper interiors for these type of models really add so much character and life to them. Once you've gotten settled in to the hobby and taken on a few mod projects I think you will really enjoy building some customs from sites like BrickVault.toys, Rebrickable etc. : )
Oh yes I've seen many of the lighting kits for this and other models. From experience lighting kits are a lot o fun initially, but it's not long before you just leave your model on display without ever turning the lights on. Thanks for commenting, have a good week!
I just Googled the 'Xiaomi Mitu Megatron' looks cool - but more of a Technic style build versus the System build of Optimus. But I'm glad you find it works well!
@@CraftedBricks that's why it works well, they look nothing alike, just like autobots and decepticons, they are the same size which is the same size as Voltron, prime is slightly taller than the other 2, all 3 in a row is pretty cool. Apparently Lego won't make a Megatron because he transforms into a weapon.. 🤷🏻♂️
@@lunch2102 Ah I see, well that's a missed opportunity by Lego. They are odd about the 'weapon' thing. I was literally just the other day buying a whole range of Lego minifigure weapons from BrickLink!
No problem and all Taiga, these mods and this video has been on my mind for a while, so it's been good to finally get the build, mods and video all done. Have a superb week! Cheers, Simon
No problem at all Ed, I think you'll enjoy making these changes, the trailer in particular is a fun build and completes the 'Optimus package' for display. Cheers, Simon
I think I might have to get my Optimus Prime out again. There was an issue with his arms not quite lining up right at the sockets in his shoulder joints. Couldn't figure it out and finally got recommended your video by the UA-cam algorithm. I see now what I need to look more closely at. Excellent video! 😁👍👍
Thanks for commenting DarkVoidIII - I hope you are able to fix that issue with your model and that my video has inspired you to take on 1 or a few of the mods, like maybe adding the knee joints! Have fun with it! Cheers, Simon
yeah, I didn't like that the knees were a complete miss. I'll be working on how I'm gonna tweak them with what I currently have. I have some parts from a buildable figure, and I plan on doing some store scouting too. I will for sure take the head mods in to consideration. I'll keep the printed eyes, but he does need a nose bridge.
It sounds like you are an experienced modder and I'm sure will have the knee change and any head updates you choose to make well in hand. All the best with it!
Thank you craft bricks because I just got a Lego Optimus prime set and now I am probably gonna add the trailer and the exhaust but not the head and the knee bendable functions, thanks for the idea!
Thank you for the info. I have these files downloaded to my drive. And am doing the multiple leg designs for different designs of Optimus prime even from the Netflix series War For Cybertron. And the trailer.
Hi Gjuitu - thanks for letting me know you found my video and supporting files to be useful. You mods and improvements for the different leg designs sound great! Best wishes for your project. Cheers, Simon
I originally had the same thought Dennis. But funnily enough when I was building this and tried adding extra tiles to the trailer roof I felt it lost detail & texture on how it looks. But definitely try adding tiles to the roof if you build this 👌 we all see things a little differently.
I'm going to download the instructions for the upgrades, but this is a correction coming from an old dog that had the original G1 toy back in 1983, the original figure did have a knee joint. Because the transformation, he did have joints in the hip that made the legs flip back, but he did have a knee joint where you could bend the knee. So the old G1 toy dead have an e-joint. Take a look online and you'll see what I'm talking about. The original G1 to I did have a knee that bent. Look at the cab of ultra Magnus. Same mold, and did the same thing.
Hi there, sounds good! And yes I've a lot, like a ton of comments mentioning the knees on the old toy. That's ok, a minor mistake, my main focus of the video was showcasing several key modification/improvements that can be done to this model to make it even more special. All the best and thanks for sharing.
Hey I noticed that on the official set the stickers on the legs are on upside down and need to be flipped, and it makes it look more accurate to the G-1 show
Really cool upgrade and props for giving credit! You did unintentionally mispronounce the trailer creators name but I felt I should point out the proper pronunciation for future reference should you ever need it. Their name is based upon the Japanese words for 8 and 6, "Hachi" and "Roku" respectively. Putting them together will give you Hachi Roku, or "86" in English (while this is mostly my own speculation, their early mocs were primarily Initial D cars so I believe the name was inspired by the Toyota AE86's name, which was commonly shortened to "86" or "Hachi Roku") then of course you have the 24 on the end Hope this doesn't come off as rude, just a slight correction ^^
Oh yes I know I miss pronounced Hachiroku24's name/handle it's why I put up the text on screen in the video apologising. It's ok I now know for future the better/proper pronunciation if I refer to, or showcase his work again. Thanks for the comment and details on the origin of the name and words, appreciated. : )
@@CraftedBricks Glad to hear it, though I do apologize for assuming. I do agree that the origins are quite interesting though so I'm glad I could help you learn something new ^_^
Sounds good! FYI - I made a note in the link in the description for the knees mod. The designer for that mod has published a new version, version 3, I recommend going with that version + ordering the parts he's listed on his Rebrickable page. Enjoy!
@@CraftedBricks I am! I understood why the knees don't bend in the original design as it's based on the original toy, but being able to get him into more dynamic poses will really add to my enjoyment. And that trailer is just amazing!
Hope Lego can produce the Ultra Magnus and Trailer set together with the Rodimus HotRod Prime series after the Lego version of the Decepticons (like Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave and Galvatron, something which Hasbro, Lego and Takara Tony agree)
I think you need a lighter color of blue for the eyes or just not a transparent piece because you cant see his eyes from afar but the video is still a great video for modifications
Thanks for sharing, yeah that certainly could be something to try out. Let me know how you go with your model and what colour plate works best for the eyes for you, I'd be keen to hear how you go with it!
Here’s a thought where are the swing out landing gears and for a better lock the top of the trailer should be covered up with smooth plates that are gray plates. If you’re going to go all out, you might as well go the whole way. I’ve been a fan of transformers for a long time since 1984.
The supports for the trailer are included! Did you miss that in the video (+you can see them in the thumbnail/photos). As for the other changes you've suggested, sounds good let me know how you go when you build your version! It would be good to see it 🙂
You will need additional parts for sure. The MOC page on Rebrickable that is linked in the description of the video for the knee mod, shows you the list of parts you will need to buy from BrickLink. Cheers, Simon
@@CraftedBricks I'm still working on how to attach it to Optimus himself, but the basic idea is a trailer that splits into armor he can wear as a super mode
Each knee joint as a double set of Lego joint parts connected together. So they are very strong and support the upper section of Optimus with no problem at all!
@@CraftedBricks amazing! That's unbelievable, I've seen so many knee mods but they all flop cause the joints can't hold the poses, this one is superb it definitely can
Thanks for these recommendations. One question I did have is that bigwhiteal says that Version 3 does not work with your leg swivel mod. If I want both swivel and knees would you recommend going with Version 2 + your swivel mod?
Hi there, I re-checked the details write-up on Bigwhiteal's Rebrickable page for the knee mod and he says that version 3 does include the swivel as well as the knee joint. So I think you should go with his version 3 mod as the best option. Btw I didn't design the swivel for his knee/leg mod. All the best with this, and I hope you enjoy modding your set!
I wonder what jobby the hong thinks about the trailer, roller, anti anti aircraft gun, 3 minifigures. Also really cool upgrades, still looks old school while acting slightly modern. I didnt mind the stiff knees botn cause the old toys didnt, and I was worried how it would affect the transformation and overall stability but looks great.
Sounds good and thanks for sharing your thoughts. Even though I made this video several months back I'm still very happy with my modified Optimus! (Especially the improved pose-ability with the new knees!)
2:29 ... my guy...the very first Optimus figure had move able knees that weren’t needed for the transformation, I literally have it right next to me as I type this... Great vid though! 👍
Hi there, I've had so many people correct me on the knees comment on the original toy, I usually delete them as it misses the point of the video, being modifying and improving the Lego Optimus set. But you are the first to be polite about it. thank you. Yes a minor mistake but all ok as the Lego model is definitely improved by adding knee joints! Have a great weekend, cheers, Simon
No, thank you... you have changed my mind about this set. I am a pretty big transformers fan and I thought that I would just skip the set because it didn’t hold up for me, but you showed awesome ways to improve this set and make so much more accurate to source material. Thank you, from me and everyone else watching, thank you. @@CraftedBricks
Hey Simon great video, I’ve ordered the parts except for your mods like the roof swoop and the other builds inside. I tried using the google doc and it doesn’t let me see the parts list and instructions I think it’s because I’m on a phone is there any way you could help me?
Hi there, for my mods for the trailer you will need to view my model file Studio on your computer. I'm pretty sure you can't view that file on your phone. Also the parts list for the trailer mod and parts for my head mod are in the two .xml files in that Google Drive folder. You'll need to use those to create a wanted list in BrickLink to order the parts. Here's a link to where you can download Studio. www.bricklink.com/v3/studio/download.page I hope this helps! It's a superb mod and build I think you will like it.
No problem! + you'll find the Trailer build to be surprisingly fun. I know it's really just a box on wheels that folds open, but it looks great and goes so well with the main Optimus model. Just make sure that you update the parts inventory with the changes that I recommend in the Read-Me doc that I posted up, before you go ahead and order parts from BrickLink. I'm happy to help if you have questions. : )
Hi Simon, do you have any tips on ordering the trailer parts on bricklink? I added them to wish list but when I select buy all, the prices seems to be all over the place… wasn’t sure if you had a previous video or article on getting best prices.
Hi Will, I do have some content that may be of use. I think Tips #1 & 2 in this article on my website will be of interest: craftedbricks.com/2024/02/27/my-top-10-bricklinking-tips/ And I have a video that I made quite a while back on 'How to buy Lego on BrickLink' that could be of use: ua-cam.com/video/m8htu67viQc/v-deo.html The way I usually decide on which seller to go with on BrickLink is from the 'Buy Wanted List' page, I look over the pricing of parts for the top ~5-8 or so domestic sellers that have the most unique parts matching my wanted list. And then order directly from the store pages of the sellers I want to go with. Good luck and I think you'll really love the outcome of this build!
I know it's a bit late for this but does the knee upgrade affect the transformation and does the knee use the normal leg plus extra parts or it's just extra part Also I loved the vid❤
Hi there, no the knee upgrade does not affect the transformation ability of the model at all. To do the knee mod you will need to take the legs apart and use the original parts from the legs + yes additional parts you need to order from BrickLink. The Rebrickable page for the knee mod that I linked to lists the additional parts you will need. All the best!
That is excellent to hear, I think you will love the addition of the trailer - it's also a fun build! To answer your question: there's a small axle (or pin. I can't recall as it's been a while!) on the underside of the trailer that slots into a hole on Optimus' gun. The gun being seated between the two legs when Optimus is transformed into truck mode. So yes the Trailer does connect to Optimus and can be pulled along. : )
Hi, i am confused about the leg mod. Do I buy all the parts in version 3 plus all the extra in the read me? For the mods head, do I need to buy all in the list to make it work?
Hi there - I'm happy to help. The designer who designed the knee mod has no published version 3 of his mod since I published my video, so I can completely understand why it may all seem confusing. I built 'version 1' - so if you want the same legs I built in the video go with version 1 + order the extra parts I listed in my ReadMe file for the legs to avoid the colour issues. OR you can go with his version 3 + order the parts he listed on Rebrickable on the inventory tab of his MOC page and then make any part colour changes as you go as you see fit. For my head mod that is much easier, yes just order all the parts I listed in the xml file (1.2) and with the parts from the original head you will have everything you need. I hope this makes things clearer for you! Cheers, Simon
@@CraftedBricks I like to build version 1 legs with the knees + the swivel joints. I need to buy the following. Parts-Version1-AdditionalParts The swivel modification 2 X 14704 (Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Small Tow Ball Socket on Side) 2 X 14417 (Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Tow Ball on Side) 10 X 3023 (Plate 1 x 2) light bluish grey 4 X 99780 (Bracket 1 x 2 - 1 x 2 Inverted) Black Removing the following parts: 4 x 11211 brick 1x2 with studs black 2 2x2 plate black 2 2x2 plate grey + order the extra parts in ReadMe file Am I right?
Hey I had a look over bigwhiteal's MOc page for the knee mods - having 3 versions is now super confusing, and annoying as the version I built he's removed the instructions for. You should do this: Go with version 3. Order the parts from Rebrickable he listed on the Inventory tab. + 2x 2x6 plates (#3795) in Black - to use at step 1 versus the Blue plate. Without going over everything again I can't tell if my extra parts in my notes file, aside from the 2x6 plates I mentioned above, will replace all the coloured parts in his version 3, it looks close but you may have some extra parts left over. So perhaps give the extra parts a miss? Up to you. All I can say though is stick with it, the knee and hip swivel mod is, despite the confusion/hassle, really worth it!
Fantastic! 😀 I'm afraid I'm new to BrickLink Studio. I downloaded your model file, and I'm wondering how to view the instructions for the parts. I've tried clicking on the different building steps, but it doesn't work. Is there a tutorial I could follow? Many thanks!
Hi Aidan, are you seeking 'building instructions', as in step-by-step instructions on how to build my mods for the trailer internals? I didn't actually make them this time as they are simple elements and you can rotate and see them easily in Studio to see how to build them. OR did you mean wanting the parts list, so that you can order the parts on BrickLink to make these elements? If that's the case there is a file in that Google Drive folder, 3.1, that is the parts list you can use to create a wanted list in BrickLink to order the parts. I do have a tutorial video on my channel for how to buy Lego parts on BrickLink to that may help. Let me know how you go / if you have more questions. Cheers, Simon
Hi, Simon! Thank you very much for your reply. I was referring to step-by-step building instructions, but I’ll have a go at examining the mods in Studio and building them from there! Many thanks again! 🙂
No problem Aidan, I think you'll be ok as they are very simple constructions. I'm glad you are taking them on + obviously the build of the trailer. It looks really good in person! All the best.
Thanks, Simon! 🙂 I’ve just realised how to disassemble the mods in Studio; that should make things easier! Great job designing them too! Can’t wait to put them and the trailer together! 😊
I just matched the sticker orientation to LEGO's photos and instructions. But I can see what you mean when looking at pictures of the cartoon G1 Optimus Prime. 🤔
I know I’m going to sound really lazy but is their anyway you can do a video tutorial on those knees. I’ve spent the last hour trying to figure out everything through those links and I can’t figure out what I need or which one I’m doing 😭
Hello - the easiest way for me to help you is to break down what you need to do into some steps: 1. Go to the Rebrickable page for leg-knee mod (rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-118758/bigwhiteal/optimus-prime-knee-mod/#details) - download the instructions file called: OptimusLeftLegSwivel.pdf 2. Buy all the parts shown on the Inventory tab on the Rebrickable page AND the extra parts listed on the Description tab (for the swivel version) from BrickLink. 2.1 optional, before you order parts on BrickLink: - look at my Read-me file for the legs called: '2 - Leg Knee Modification Tips - READ ME.txt' - add the extra parts I list (see item4 ) to your BrickLink wanted list / and make the minor colour changes to the part you need to buy that I recommend. 3. When you have ordered your parts from BrickLink and they have arrived - remove and completely take apart both left and right legs. 4. Follow the instructions you downloaded to build the left leg with the knee joint and swivel. At the same time, step-by-step as you are building the left leg, build the right leg, mirroring the instruction steps shown for the left leg. (The reason you have to do this is because the designer only provided instructions for the left leg as perhaps he's lazy to?) 4.1 Optional, as you are following the instructions, sub in the parts I recommended in my Read Me file when you get to them. The reason for these part changes to what Bigwhiteal shows in the instructions is that this avoids 'weird colours' poking through and will give you a clean and consistent looking result for each leg like you saw in my video. I hope this helps! Let me know if there are further questions that I can help with. Cheers, Simon
Hi Alex, thank you! I the links you need for the instructions and the extra files I spoke about in the video are all linked in the description of the video. You can buy the extra parts you need to build the trailer from BrickLink. If you've never bought Lego from BrickLink I recommend you start with a smaller mod or model, like maybe the knee upgrade first. There is a tutorial video on 'how to buy Lego on BrickLink' available on my channel as well! Good luck and happy building! Cheers, Simon
Please, do you know where you can buy the Optimus truck trailer shown in the video ? I can't find it anywhere on the Internet. Thank you for your help.
Hello there, I explain in the video where you can find free building instructions for the trailer. Did you go to the link in the video description to the Rebrickable page for the trailer? Also you can't just 'buy' the trailer you need to buy the parts from BrickLink and then build it via the free instructions. All the best!
Sorry JD, I've not a lot of time at the moment and haven't come back to this model. Do you think it's something you could create in Studio to share with the community?
I agree James that would have been nice. With the instructions being free and access to BrickLink to buy the parts you can very easily build the trailer if you want to. It would make for a superb first mod and first BrickLink experience.
Hi there, yes you do. I mention in the video that in the description of the video there is a link to a Google Drive folder - you can find the instructions for the head mod there + the parts list to upload to BrickLink to order the extra parts you will need. Have fun with it! Cheers, Simon
It really depends on what Optimus Helmet you look at. If you check online for images of Gen1 Optimus then you'll see that the back of his head is not dead flat or open! I think I've landed on a better version which I show in the video for the Lego model versus the standard head. But each to their own, and if the standard build head with the dead-flat and open back as designed by Lego works the best for you, then happy days!
Hello I love how there are updates to the New Optimus prime Lego set but I was kinda stuck on how to update the knees for him cuz I didn’t really understand it is it okay if u can show or do a video of it instead of you making an update on Optimus prime for his knees plsss
Have you been rotating the arms a lot and the ratchet grooves have worn? I've not had the same issue. One way would be to replace the parts (you can even contact Lego to ask them for replacement parts.) Best of luck of it!
Hi Simon, great video and also the additional mods and ideas are awesome. Just received the full set of bricks for the trailer and your added features. Already did the head and leg mods (v3 legs). But as you say in the read me file there doesn’t seem to be a studio file for the accessory fittings and mods on the trailers. Could you still upload this to the google drive? Thank you.
Hi Mr Phoenix! It's so good to hear that you modifying and improving your Optimus + building the Trailer! The file you need is definitely in the Google drive folder, it is called: '3 - CraftedBricks - Trailer Enhancements.io' let me know ho you go. : )
@@CraftedBricks How stupid of me. I did not realise that the IO files were the instructions/designs. I assumed they were just the partlist you could import in BrickLink. Thank you. I am fairly noob in MOB I was playing with Studio to get to know it and if you are interrested I can send you a new version of the io which includes a re-organized (maybe not your logic 😇) step by step build.
All ok and I'm glad you have used this exercise / mods to play around with, and get used to, Studio! No need to send me the file, I'm focusing on other projects and I think you are one of only a handful that actually went the full way and have built all the mods that I featured in the video, so cudos to you. Have a great weekend!
he now has a version 3 and I am honestly very confused on the parts list labeling. does anyone know if version 3 uses the parts of version 3? Also how do I use the XML file for the head upgrade?
Hi Jon, BigWhiteAl looks like he's updated his designs and his Rebrickable page since I made my video. I agree it is confusing with all the different versions listed! I 'think' go with version 3, and order the parts as listed on the Inventory tab on his page. He says that list the list of parts needed for version 3. As for my XML file of the parts for the head modification - use this to create parts wanted list in BrickLink. I have a detailed tutorial video on 'how to buy Lego on BrickLink' that includes details on how to create a wanted list using an xml file of parts. That video is here: ua-cam.com/video/m8htu67viQc/v-deo.html ...this should help!
You are welcome I'm glad the video was of use. A minor tip, the designer for the knee mod has made another version of the knees since I made this video. He now has version 3. It is probably easiest to go with his version 3 + his parts list on Rebrickable versus worrying about my part changes etc. It will be the simpler option.
Hi there, you can buy parts for the trailer or any Lego custom model from BrickLink: www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page ...if you are new to BrickLink I have a tutorial video on my channel that may be of interest to you on 'how to by Lego parts on BrickLink'. All the best!
Go to the Rebrickable pages for the Trailer and K Joint knee mods, the links you need are in the Description of the video. Click on the Inventory tab on each of the pages and Rebrickable shows you a parts cost estimate! Add + 20% to factor in shipping costs for the BrickLink orders you will need to place. As for my mod for the head I don't know the exact cost but you are looking at < $10 it's just a few additional parts. I hope this helps. Good luck!
Hi Michael - I've too much on my plate at the moment to focus or work on that, including putting a design and model together for the 2023 Summer Joust completion. Are you interested in finding or getting instructions for Roller as you've built the trailer? I wonder if you could try contacting the person who posted the photo of the Roller on the Trailer MOC page on Rebrickable? They may be able to send you photos of their build maybe even a design file. Let me know how you go. Cheers, Simon
Hi James, there's definitely not a password on the folder, it's public access. Can you email me a screenshot of what you are seeing to simon.lenz@gmail.com, maybe I can help.
The parts lists are in XML format. You use them with BrickLink when you create a parts Wanted list. I have a tutorial video on my channel about 'How to buy Lego on BrickLink' that will be of help to you.
I understand. My friend has this (www.buildingtoystore.com/en/custom-moc-optimus-prime-transforming-building-bricks-toy-set-2700-pieces-722.html) the design is superb but the part quality is very poor. I wouldn't go near it. But it is interesting to see how good an Optimus Prime built with Lego parts could look.
Agreed! But I wonder if they didn't because it would likely have tripled or quadrupled the cost of the set and may have put people off buying it. Luckily you now have the instructions & intel to build it if you want to or design your own! Thanks for commenting. : )

@@CraftedBricks Also, thank you for being so engaged with your community, it means a lot to me, and all of us, I am sure!
Have you ever seen the third party upgrade kit for making it light up? It looks like a cool upgrade.
Oh yes I've seen many of the lighting kits for this and other models. From experience lighting kits are a lot o fun initially, but it's not long before you just leave your model on display without ever turning the lights on. Thanks for commenting, have a good week!
Picked up a Xiaomi Mitu Megatron at a vintage toy meet in Malvern last week, goes excellent with my ransomfern alt build IDW Optimus.

0:27 wow you actually got it to look like the late 80s toy that’s really cool.
Agreed, it is a really good looking Lego set and the trailer addition makes it even better! Thanks for commenting.

@@CraftedBricks thanks. I plan on making an Optimus prime X2 bigger than the set.
Impressive work. The only thing I would suggest for improvement on the trailer is to use tiles to help smooth out the top.
I originally had the same thought Dennis. But funnily enough when I was building this and tried adding extra tiles to the trailer roof I felt it lost detail & texture on how it looks. But definitely try adding tiles to the roof if you build this 👌 we all see things a little differently.
very nice mods, gives so much to the original set.
They really seem to boost it - definitely worth trying if you have this set and are open to moding it!
Man, I really need to do these additions. I might do this instead of the space shuttle rocket booster
Sounds good Minh. These updates to Optimus are easier (and cheaper) to do versus the Space Shuttle booster & fuels tank builds. : )
Great video! I’ll check the google drive links!
Excellent, I think you'll enjoy upgrading your model if you decide to take these mods on. All the best!
Incredible. Thank you Simon.
No problem at all Steve I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hey I noticed that on the official set the stickers on the legs are on upside down and need to be flipped, and it makes it look more accurate to the G-1 show
You are spot on with that Nottopostjustlike. If I could turn back time and correct my model, video and the photos I would! Thanks for sharing.
Great upgrades! Really appreciate it!
No problem at all Jason - I'm glad you found this video (and the supporting files if you upgrade your set) to be useful!
@@CraftedBricks You have gone the extra mile of sharing HOW to upgrade! Love that! Very awesome stuff! Take care!
Putting them together will give you Hachi Roku, or "86" in English (while this is mostly my own speculation, their early mocs were primarily Initial D cars so I believe the name was inspired by the Toyota AE86's name, which was commonly shortened to "86" or "Hachi Roku") then of course you have the 24 on the end
Hope this doesn't come off as rude, just a slight correction ^^
Oh yes I know I miss pronounced Hachiroku24's name/handle it's why I put up the text on screen in the video apologising. It's ok I now know for future the better/proper pronunciation if I refer to, or showcase his work again. Thanks for the comment and details on the origin of the name and words, appreciated. : )
@@CraftedBricks Glad to hear it, though I do apologize for assuming.
I do agree that the origins are quite interesting though so I'm glad I could help you learn something new ^_^

Amazing Video! Great Quality
Thank you! I worked hard on this one. I'll hopefully get a Short version out this coming week and also start working on a new video!
It would be good to see it 🙂
Can you build the knee mod using the parts from the set or do you need to get additional parts?
You will need additional parts for sure. The MOC page on Rebrickable that is linked in the description of the video for the knee mod, shows you the list of parts you will need to buy from BrickLink. Cheers, Simon
It's crazy how different we went with the same idea (a trailer addon)

Also really cool upgrades, still looks old school while acting slightly modern. I didnt mind the stiff knees botn cause the old toys didnt, and I was worried how it would affect the transformation and overall stability but looks great.

Nice work simon I am going to have to make that trailer to go with prime
I don’t have Optimus prime or even want it but I’m still watching this
Sounds good, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Simon, do you have any tips on ordering the trailer parts on bricklink? I added them to wish list but when I select buy all, the prices seems to be all over the place… wasn’t sure if you had a previous video or article on getting best prices.
Hi Will, I do have some content that may be of use. I think Tips #1 & 2 in this article on my website will be of interest: craftedbricks.com/2024/02/27/my-top-10-bricklinking-tips/
And I have a video that I made quite a while back on 'How to buy Lego on BrickLink' that could be of use: ua-cam.com/video/m8htu67viQc/v-deo.html
The way I usually decide on which seller to go with on BrickLink is from the 'Buy Wanted List' page, I look over the pricing of parts for the top ~5-8 or so domestic sellers that have the most unique parts matching my wanted list. And then order directly from the store pages of the sellers I want to go with.
Good luck and I think you'll really love the outcome of this build!
Thanks Simon!
Great video again!!
I'm glad you liked it. I already need to be thinking about the next one! haha
@CraftedBricks thank you appreciate it
Bro the trailer looks like it came with this set wtf
That trailer is kick a**
Fantastic video! I am going to try to build the trailer. Does it connect to the model or just sit on it? Thank you:)

The swivel modification
2 X 14704 (Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Small Tow Ball Socket on Side)
2 X 14417 (Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Tow Ball on Side)
10 X 3023 (Plate 1 x 2) light bluish grey
4 X 99780 (Bracket 1 x 2 - 1 x 2 Inverted) Black
Removing the following parts:
4 x 11211 brick 1x2 with studs black
2 2x2 plate black
2 2x2 plate grey
+ order the extra parts in ReadMe file
Am I right?
@@CraftedBricks Thanks for the reply. I will ordering version 3 plus the parts in the read me.

wow! super mods!!
Amazing!
Pretty good recomendations. Though the thigh stickers are upside down to the animation & pg 5 illustration.
Hello - the easiest way for me to help you is to break down what you need to do into some steps:
1. Go to the Rebrickable page for leg-knee mod (rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-118758/bigwhiteal/optimus-prime-knee-mod/#details) - download the instructions file called: OptimusLeftLegSwivel.pdf
2. Buy all the parts shown on the Inventory tab on the Rebrickable page AND the extra parts listed on the Description tab (for the swivel version) from BrickLink.
2.1 optional, before you order parts on BrickLink:
- look at my Read-me file for the legs called: '2 - Leg Knee Modification Tips - READ ME.txt'
- add the extra parts I list (see item4 ) to your BrickLink wanted list / and make the minor colour changes to the part you need to buy that I recommend.
(The reason you have to do this is because the designer only provided instructions for the left leg as perhaps he's lazy to?)
4.1 Optional, as you are following the instructions, sub in the parts I recommended in my Read Me file when you get to them.
First of all sir amazing job second of all where do I find the instructions for the trailer and where do I get the parts if I dont have them
Hi Alex, thank you! I the links you need for the instructions and the extra files I spoke about in the video are all linked in the description of the video.

Does the new bumblebee set fit inside the trailer?
I don't own the Bumble Bee so I can't check it does! The new set looks to be about 13 studs wide so it may actually just fit!
Where do you get a thousand parts for the trailer?
Hi there, you can buy parts for the trailer or any Lego custom model from BrickLink: www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page ...if you are new to BrickLink I have a tutorial video on my channel that may be of interest to you on 'how to by Lego parts on BrickLink'. All the best!
I turned my Lego Optimus prime into Jetfire prime. (I had a lot of black Lego pieces)
That would have been a fun conversion project!
Hello, would anyone be kind enough to detail how much these modifications would cost? Of course excluding the truck itself?
Go to the Rebrickable pages for the Trailer and K Joint knee mods, the links you need are in the Description of the video. Click on the Inventory tab on each of the pages and Rebrickable shows you a parts cost estimate! Add + 20% to factor in shipping costs for the BrickLink orders you will need to place. As for my mod for the head I don't know the exact cost but you are looking at < $10 it's just a few additional parts. I hope this helps. Good luck!
Any idea if you are going to add the roller eventually?
Hi Michael - I've too much on my plate at the moment to focus or work on that, including putting a design and model together for the 2023 Summer Joust completion. Are you interested in finding or getting instructions for Roller as you've built the trailer? I wonder if you could try contacting the person who posted the photo of the Roller on the Trailer MOC page on Rebrickable? They may be able to send you photos of their build maybe even a design file. Let me know how you go. Cheers, Simon
@@CraftedBricks no problem, I will try reaching out to him
The Google Drive FIle for the Trailer has a password it says and I am unable to figure out how to open it
Hi James, there's definitely not a password on the folder, it's public access. Can you email me a screenshot of what you are seeing to simon.lenz@gmail.com, maybe I can help.
Mate, you are so handsome! 😌😏
I appreciate that, thank you!
Burger dog that’s my wallpaper
None of the parts lists work, when I open them its just words in "" brackets
The parts lists are in XML format. You use them with BrickLink when you create a parts Wanted list. I have a tutorial video on my channel about 'How to buy Lego on BrickLink' that will be of help to you.
Thanks for the help! Im new to Briklink, IO files, XML parts lists etc, so your tutorial helped me a lot, I greatly appreciate it.
Awesome video man!! I’m so curious, does / can Lego Optimus transform without rebuilding?
Yes! This model can be transformed between truck and robot form - with no disassembly required 😄
@@CraftedBricks ohhh man now I want one hahaha😂😂😂
😮🎉😮🎉😮🎉thank
Holy moly that's legit. My only criticism is that my wallet hurts now.
Haha! I didn't know you have the Optimus Prime set Damien. I thought you are a hard-core Star Wars Lego Man! : )
@@CraftedBricks I don't, but I want it now 🤣
Trailer looks great but unfortunately, nothing will make that Prime look good in robot form.
Lego should have just made the trailer…
Agreed! But I wonder if they didn't because it would likely have tripled or quadrupled the cost of the set and may have put people off buying it. Luckily you now have the instructions & intel to build it if you want to or design your own! Thanks for commenting. : )
Awesome mods...
Thank you
Your comment made my afternoon! Thanks for that, I the video has inspired you to mod your own Optimus Prime model! : )
