  • Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility regard learning about other cultures, controlling your biases, adapting your behaviors and communication style considering the background of people around you, and being aware of power imbalances and biases, and respecting others’ values. Both have the goal of using knowledge about different groups to inform how you interact with others.

It is simply respect. People practiced it for thousands of years until it became an academic discipline. And it applies to everyone.

Not turning generalizations about other cultures into stereotypes or assumptions about specific people or situations seems very wise. But this is true for all cross-cultural interactions, and on both ends, not just top downward in the left wing racialist power hierarchy. And while examining one's biases is good, I'm not sure I'd preach to other people that they engage in a lifelong struggle session.
