I have never commented before, but just want to encourage you no matter where you land. You place yourself out there for all of us to watch, critique, examine, analyze, etc. We are the privileged, the audience, to experience your journey. Thank you for exposing yourself in such a wonderfully honest way.
Love the vocals in this!!! Those raspy cracks that are in there occasionally are gold -- don't "perfect" them out of existence. Embrace. Such unique character.
I too like the sound of her voice, including the random raspy cracks-so much so that I listen to her even when she covers a tune I don't like! Put her up there with the best-and most popular- of the Internet: Gabriella Quevedo, Reina del Cid, Josh Turner, et al). She'll soon pass a million followers, and I'm here for that!
This is instantly my favorite song from your catalog. I really appreciate the vulnerability in your higher register juxtaposed against the dynamics. Please more of this!
It’s awesome that you’re breaking out of your comfort zone! Really looking forward to the new material! I’ll also be curious to see how your older material evolves in live performance as you expand on your techniques :)
Yes. That extra dynamic really works, both with the guitar and with your voice. You need light to show off the shade, shade to show off the light, and that's what this does.
Wow. This is one of the best songs you have ever written. The chorus is dynamic, emotional and perfect. I could easily imagine hearing this song on the radio right now.
Some people will say yes to plectrum some will say no…You are the author. Play how you feel. I often struggle with this. Even if I’m playing the same song there are days i just feel like playing fingerstyle. It just feels more moody and interment. Then there are days I want to project so I use a pick. Then there are days I want to do both , using fingers to soften the mood then switching to a plectrum to punch out a hook or chorus. You have a unique soothing but strong voice that I personally could listen to for hours. Don’t let others tell you how to perform your passion for performing. Just Play how you feel and make it your own. Others will defiantly follow. I know I will. All the best Mary.
I watched this yesterday on your newsletter but couldn’t comment for some reason! Love the new tune and can’t wait for your LP. Really enjoyed the contrast with the pick, bring on more of Mary Spender!
Wow! Stunning new twist on your playing and singing. Your voice has as a sultry raw energy that I haven’t heard before. Holding the verse in the lower register than opening up in the chorus, magnificent
love it. over the last couple of years I have moved from 30 years of plectrum strumming to attempting fingerstyle. Still working on the confidence to add it to the actual live playing, but at home I am 90% fingerstyle, building it in from time to time. Thanks for inspiration
I'm also trying more finger style after strumming for over 40 years. It's hard, and like you I'm very slowly building up the confidence to play this style live. It's not easy!
You're not abandoning finger style, as implied in the title of this video. You're adding strumming and interspersing it with finger style. I like it. Never stop experimenting, exploring all the amazing qualities of the acoustic guitar.
Your voice has even more character in this song. Adds another level and tone to your voice. The change in your singing and introducing a plectrum definitely works for my ears anyway. A nice contrast to have in your music.
I love it, your finger style is so soft and close, and the change in power and voice lets your drive your message I feel almost kind of announce or raise the importance of what our saying.. love it
I hope think it's one of your best songs ever Mary. I get a John Mayer kind of feel from it. The dynamic of the attack on the strings with the pic give it a real life but the finger style has the Soul. I really like it.
Your soulful strum lent to the power and dynamic range to which the song is so well suited. Would love to hear more in that tradition if that’s where guided. It’s a treat incidentally to hear you speak about guitar. Thank you so much for sharing this video. Loved both song and performance.
YEAH, MARY-GIRL!!! YEAH!!! FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for this for so long. You're finally letting your voice sound in full power! It sounds so expressive and really brings out the full potential of the voice, although it's clear that it takes a toll: you hit a certain ceiling there. And listen to the guitar finally singing at full tilt! How jovially it rings, finally allowed to shed its shackles! I unabashedly approve of the new style!
Nice. Those louder flourishes add another dimension and will allow you to express a wider range of emotions. An unbridled success I would say. Great song. Great playing. Great vocal delivery.
YES, YES and YES! That added dynamic range of vocals AND guitar is JUST what my ears were hoping for! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Have been enjoying your music/videos for quite some time, and always felt like you were "hiding a little magic" from us. 😉 SO happy you let the magic out into the universe!
When Jerry Garcia was a kid his brother chopped off his finger while they were chopping wood. When Jerry wanted to play the banjo he figured out how to hold a pick between the tip of his missing finger and the knuckle of the first finger. He started strumming with a pick when he started playing guitar. But he never forgot the finger picking technique he came up with. By the time I begun seeing him perform in the 80's he could switch back and forth between the 2 picking stiles in and instant.
I've been watching your channel for years. This is my favorite of all of your performances. And it's not just the plectrum that sets it apart. It's just totally Mary Spender, raw and genuine. Bravo! -Tom PS: Please put "Intervention" in the title or description so it's easy to find this again later!
I have ben playing guitar for years (decades). After watching you, I have started playing finger style just for fun. Thanks for the music, Mary. I really hope you come to play for us in the US.
What a wonderful way to introduce an amazing song, the back story, the genuine honesty, the talent. Your voice shines through in this song. You seemed quite comfortable with the pick and the guitar was louder to support those vocals. It is a powerful combination and shows more of your musical diversity.
I think I’ve watched 5 of your videos just listening to you talk and never until today have I heard you sing. Absolutely amazing, I love your voice, the added volume with the pick is spot on. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for your music in future. Thanks.
Beautiful. Love the added dynamic of both voice and guitar. Getting your voice close to cracking is great. Very emotionally moving. Another thing to try is perhaps doing the reverse. By that I mean, soft voice with picking guitar or bigger voice with just using your fingers. Think Joni Mitchell for examples of both. Maybe not the extremes of either but a skosh of both. Ha, there's an album title!
Blown away. I was waiting for the chorus but it took twice As long to come as I thought it would. The suspense was palpable. Fantastic chorus when it came, brilliant blending of picking and strumming. I cannot understand why you're not an international superstar. I'm thinking if you carry on like that, you will be soon, if that's what you want. Lot's of love from Germany.
There's a lot of magic in raw organic acoustic music. Love the dynamics here! Bravo to you, your ability to find new ways to enhance your sound, and for thinking outside the box. I have been working on a "hybrid" style for myself, using a pick for the lower strings, and my middle and ring fingers for the upper strings. You may get a lot out of a similar style, especially with the fact you use alternative tunings.
I kinda don't think my thoughts add much, but I just like how you put yourself out there and then let us see it. More than anything it tells me that here this girl is who feels like I do but goes ahead anyway. So I'm just pausing to leap.
Beautiful song! That mixed playing style suits you really well. Also that tuning sounds gorgeous! Sharing new songs can be intimidating but I personally think this is one of your best ones 😊
Great play with dynamics and that extra soulful boost you get on the vocals with the plectrum accompaniment gives a brilliant lift to the song. Keep exploring, Mary!
Loved your song and expanded style; the greater range you used really set off my endorphins. Had waves of the the happy chills when you launched into belting and strumming. Enthralled with you working your craft.

Well said, Jack. What a way to introduce a new song!
Love the vocals in this!!! Those raspy cracks that are in there occasionally are gold -- don't "perfect" them out of existence. Embrace. Such unique character.

LOVED it!!! One of your best songs ever! The dynamic range is amazing -- really makes the chorus *punch!*
Love the contrast between the verses and the dynamic uplift of the chorus. Sounds fantastic Mary, keep it going.
Just the right tambor, touch, and tone. A brilliant addition to your songwriting. The pre-chorus and chorus are killer…💜
It’s awesome that you’re breaking out of your comfort zone! Really looking forward to the new material! I’ll also be curious to see how your older material evolves in live performance as you expand on your techniques :)
The best song I have heard in ages, by anyone. Really loving your voice as well as the dynamics in the playing .
Love the dynamics as you go from low to high as your voice definitely fits in nicely in both ranges with/without the plectrum 👌🏻
Love your vocals! The dynamics of your vocals and guitar in the chorus are fantastic. You are a very inspiring artist!
Yes. That extra dynamic really works, both with the guitar and with your voice. You need light to show off the shade, shade to show off the light, and that's what this does.
The pick adds power to your harmony. You absolutely are the best!
I think it sounds amazing, adds a new dimension to your performance
yes.........vocally too. The varying guitar styles add to Mary's vocals
Great video and song Mary…your voice is maturing as a singer and gets better a better! Well done… Be safe. Cheers..🥂
Beautiful song! Love the added volume! Keep being you! Volume or not, have fun with it!Great job as always!
Wow. This is one of the best songs you have ever written. The chorus is dynamic, emotional and perfect. I could easily imagine hearing this song on the radio right now.

Loved the transition , your performances are like nobody else & you always bring a smile to my face .
I love this! It makes your songs a lot more interesting.

You play in whatever way that lets you squeeze out these amazing creative songs. Beautiful song Mary!
Love it. It's the contrast, soft, loud, great.
Oh Mary, hell yea!! Loved it...I was glad as I had by Strat out and could play along side ya! Testify!
Power to the people Mary.
I love your use of the plectrum along with the changing register and projection of your voice. Song is sounding great.
🦘
I love the song and the increased dynamics from the pick works so well. You really are a class act.
Get ready for compliment time. Serious Tracey Chapman vibes Mary. 👏
Versatility is key, so going back and forth from fingerstyle to pick adds a welcome level of versatility.😊
True
Absolutely gorgeous, Mary!
You're not abandoning finger style, as implied in the title of this video. You're adding strumming and interspersing it with finger style. I like it. Never stop experimenting, exploring all the amazing qualities of the acoustic guitar.
Fantastic! You are a great storyteller. Super dynamics! Didn’t want the song to end.
Your voice has even more character in this song. Adds another level and tone to your voice. The change in your singing and introducing a plectrum definitely works for my ears anyway. A nice contrast to have in your music.
Oh yes! I love everything about it. Your voice, the guitar it all fits together very well. Love the contrasts.
Hi Mary, good to see you back. Liking your mix of styles. There is nothing wrong with volume.🇪🇺🇮🇪
I love it, your finger style is so soft and close, and the change in power and voice lets your drive your message I feel almost kind of announce or raise the importance of what our saying.. love it
Love the song and the dynamic change in the chorus.
this was amazing!
first I tought the volume difference would be too much while you talked, but no, with the singing, it was just perfect!
Wow- this is my new favorite song! Just beautiful. Incredible expanded range and tone. Love from Detroit!

Oh, yeah! The pick following your vocal dynamics works beautifully! Nice!

I love it!!! I love the dynamics in the vocals, and the percussive, orchestral guitar playing!! :)
Nice. Those louder flourishes add another dimension and will allow you to express a wider range of emotions. An unbridled success I would say. Great song. Great playing. Great vocal delivery.
So lovely a sound! Thanks Mary, loved hearing more of your work.
We loved Intervention!! Your range is phenomenal!! Love the guitar.
Love it! I like how quite the song is and then it explodes in the chorus - nice touch! As always your voice is superb!!
You never cease to amaze and grow! Brilliant! Sounds great.

Congratulations, Mary, on your tour!
Very nice. I was lost in the moment and certainly enjoy the new style. Take care.
Fantastic Mary! The sound is great. Adding more tools makes your sound even more dynamic. I listen to this 5 times in a row.
Love your voice. The dynamics flow well, I enjoy the pacing. Encouraged to see you stretching you style. Keep strumming Mary! Great new song.
I really like the vocals on this.... Mary singing full voice is awesome. Next up we need a blues roll! 😃
Blown away. I was waiting for the chorus but it took twice As long to come as I thought it would. The suspense was palpable. Love the imperfections. Do what the song calls for ..
Mary’s voice is world class!
Oh yes. I like it. I am partial to your lower vocal register, but this opening up and dynamic range really works for me!
Brilliant. The pick really brings the tone out of that beautiful Martin guitar.
Absolutely loved your voice on the higher notes! Thank you for that amazing song!
~You've come a long way since the beginning of this channel...... keep up the great work, Mary
Definitely keep doing that - sounded great 👏
I ve been watching you for a while, I think your confidence has grown by leaps and bounds, it’s inspirational
I kinda don't think my thoughts add much, but I just like how you put yourself out there and then let us see it. More than anything it tells me that here this girl is who feels like I do but goes ahead anyway. So I'm just pausing to leap.
Great that you are using other vocal techniques to add colours to your musical palet. Sounds great, adds a new dimension, love it.
yeeees you are leting the rocker inside you come to the surface .... bravo . your best song so far
Great variation in voice and guitar tone... and yes. both, finger and pick.
Oh Mary, Love the new space you’ve found with your voice
All the yes’s! Love the new dynamics that the pick style allows and that are mirrored in the tweaked vocal range. Tip top tune too. 🎸 ❤
Quite amazing actually, it is great to see your growth!
Yeah I like it. Opens up some new ground to work with. Kudos
Mary - You are talented!! Thank You!
That tour hit u with a new level of confidence in ur singing, the chorus ' high notes really shine!
Beautiful song! That mixed playing style suits you really well. Also that tuning sounds gorgeous!
Sharing new songs can be intimidating but I personally think this is one of your best ones 😊
BRILLIANT song Mary 'Intervention' thanks for this 👀 🧙♀ 🎤🎸😮💖
Love the contrast your plektrumstrumming and strong chestvoice brings👍🏻
I've been waiting for you to do that...A beautiful dynamic addition. More please....
Love the contrasting styles of playing and your vocal variations- lovely.
I'm jealous how you can converse so easy while you play effortlessly. Bravo!
IMHO…. This is your best song yet. And when you start to project in the chorus it pushes me back in my chair. Holy hell. More of this.
You move that pick like a sleight of hand magician! Clever and the dynamic change pulls you right into the chorus cool !
That song was absolutely amazing, and very moving! I think both styles of playing really compliment each other very well!
Absolutely Spenderous!! Love it!❤
Showoff!
(I'm still envious of how you spoke pretty normally while playing in that other video, and you did it even better this time!)
I loved it your voice is powerful I liked the dynmics of the jump to increased volume in the chorus gave me chills
