    I will just be starting my senior year of high school and am looking into a wildlife biology career. I love almost everything about it except all the traveling. Do all wildlife biologists have to travel so much? If so is there any other careers similar to wildlife biology that still involves outdoors and wildlife interaction. I have head about zoology but am not 100% sure on their roles or availability.

    • @kristina_lynn

      Most wildlife jobs involve field work and/or travel. Almost all involve some travel as realistically I can’t think of many jobs where they only want to study the wildlife in your specific city and no further. Some wildlife jobs that don’t require travelling but do involve field work are municipal governments or conservation organizations. Like for example a wildlife warden or conservation officer generally has limited jurisdictions they travel in. But like I said it makes it tough to cut yourself off from the majority of jobs right off the bat in a competitive field so maybe check out ecology or environmental jobs which are more flexible and broad

    Heyy, I'm graduating from high school next year and I'm looking to go to university for a degree like ecology, animal behaviour or some sort of conservation or zoology degree, so the point is I really want to help animals like you said in your best things about being a wildlife biologist video, however the staying away for weeks from home kind of makes me feel nervous about how I would cope with all of it, do you think there's a way for me to have a carrier in this field closer to my area? (Love your channel, it has been so useful for me to decide if I'm ready for this carrier or not! ❤️)

    I have an Associates Degree in Fish and Wildlife Mgmt. At the time I got this degree, it was considered all you needed for a technicians job. Now it is not considered enough, a Bachelors degree was required for the same job. Now, some agencies want a Masters Degree for the same job. Most of those jobs are really game farming, e.i. running a tractor, planting food crops, disease information collecting, controlled burning operations, performing surveys, trapping, stocking, answering to wildlife damage complaints, Etc. Very few jobs required research duties in my agency. Usually, they would take our data we collected, and send it to one or two wildlife biologists in our state to analyze the data to make recommendations for hunting or population manipulations. So, why would someone who spent 4-6 years want to go out and do farming or laboring duties with that level of education?

    As a vegan myself I struggled with the dissections that were expected of me in my marine bio program. When our field research team studied small invertebrate animals, they withdrew specimens with rough handling methods into these metal tanks. Even if that wasn't the case, the simple act of studying them under a microscope, killed most of the insects and plankton.
    I'm a bit introverted and don't have many people to ask in person. So I asked an entomologist online, if there was ANY field in the sciences that someone like me could do, (or if I should just open an animal sanctuary instead.) They stated that yes, most fields that study small invertebrates are going to spend time basically killing specimens for a higher cause. But, a large mammal zoologist might not. Also, a wildlife biologist/ecologist might not!
    Does anyone else know what it's like in wildlife biology/conservation/ecology?

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +23

      I never did any dissections in university and I studied ecology and large carnivores. Thanks for caring about all animals, including the small little guys :)

      Generally we study the baseline levels and behavior of wildlife, and what type of sensitive species are in the area years before a new construction project is done. I can get up to three months off and I only really go out maybe 4 times max all winter - there just isn't much to see wildlife wise. There is sooo many wildlife biologist jobs in places like the American Southwest where you can be out in the heat too as long as you want to be. There is an entire segment of wildlife biologists that only work summers/field season temporary jobs and take winter off so totally possible.

    Wildlife biology takes a special kind of person. Its one of the most underpaid, underappreciated, and overcompetitive fields. Field techs are often exploited for their labor. Unless you're ok with being poor, in debt, traveling a lot and having unstable jobs and relationships, then it's not a good idea. it's a better idea to get a better paying job and volunteer on a wildlife project.

    What’s the difference between a ecologist vs a wildlife biologist?

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому

      Ecologist is more focused on the ecology of the area - the plants, animals, environmental processes, and how they all interact with each other. A wildlife biologist specializes in the animal side of things and how wildlife interact with their habitats. Realistically though, I would consider myself both an ecologist and a wildlife biologist, since I have worked general ecology and wildlife specific jobs. Hope that helps!

    I want to be a wildlife biologist, because I'm a bear loving tree hugging hippie at heart, and I want to meet good friends and a woman like you. ;) plus I really enjoy the outdoors and nature most of all. but by no means am I vegan. that burger looks straight up legit though. I think as pursuing it as an undergrad maybe, doing something that I enjoy won't be a bad idea. but as far as career goes I'm probably going to be in the engineering field. but that seems too dry and monotonous to me. plus I don't really want to commute to a day job in a big city every day. I like to be in the field. I'm already a lot older than most, I've already had my 25+ years of IT experience. I've decided to work at an airport now fueling the planes that you travel on, and doing all of the ground handling. I enjoy my current job a lot. But it is not endgame. I also love to fly airplanes. I dream of being a bush pilot and a conservation ecologist. : ) And I do find Bowerbirds super cool! :X

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  Рік тому

      There are some office only wildlife jobs but they probably won't be as much actual biology work without any field experience. But there's positions like Policy Analyst for a wildlife management agency, or jobs at a wildlife related non-profit. So it's definitely possible but it does limit your search, it may be worth looking into a more general degree like Environmental Sciences which has many more available office jobs.

    I'm currently completing a biotechnology program at a college that has a pathway agreement with University of Guelph that will allow me to enter into the 3rd year of a BSc in biological sciences. It's a fairly flexible major and I plan on taking as many environmental/wildlife classes as possible. Do you think not majoring in wildlife biology would be an issue? I'm able to volunteer quite a bit as my living arrangements and cost of living are all covered. I'm so determined to be doing what you're doing, but this is the only way for me to get into university (I dropped out of highschool and had a child). I have a 3.8 GPA and can absolutely handle the work, I just don't have the highschool marks to prove it so I'm stuck at college for now and the biological sciences major is the only one close to anything field related. The other pathways are genetics, microbiology etc. Sorry for the rambling. You rule!

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому

      Mandy O'brecht no I think a biological sciences major with as many wildlife related classes you can make work! Maybe present it on your resume as a “wildlife emphasis” or list your wildlife related classes so an employer can see. I think it’s a pretty sweet thing you’ve got the costs covered! And ya I agree with you biological sciences major would be much better for a wildlife job then genetics or microbio.

    Sorry to break your little vegan heart, they cook those beyond burgers on the same grill they cook the meat burgers on=Enjoy.

      @@kristina_lynn I do not consider a"drive-through"a restaurant. I chef @ a restaurant & we have a separate grill/pans for all vegan cooked items that way there is no cross-contamination.
