    I am currently a junior in highschool and already am in an agriculture program and studying animals thinking of becoming a wildlife biologist but I’m not entirely sure.
    Do most wildlife biologists careers include traveling?
    Would people working in an animal sanctuary or reserve be considered wildlife biologists? If not what “career is that”

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +34

      I would say most wildlife biologist careers include travelling at least at the beginning. It's hard to make judgements on wildlife in an office if you've never been out and observed them or studied them at some part of your career. Lots of wildlife biologists stay in the field their whole life, but also a lot transition to office roles writing or researching or managing field biologists if they have kids or just want to be closer to home. Some field jobs you are out for one day a month close to home, some you are out the entire month at a fly in camp so every role is different. For animal sanctuaries and reserves, a trained biologist working there would be probably be called a wildlife biologist. That said, animal sanctuaries overwhelmingly hire minimum wage students and interns. I've worked at many sanctuaries and since they are non-profits, it's hard to make a living wage there. All the sanctuaries I've worked at were volunteer only, and they only paid a dollar or so above minimum wage at best. That said, they were all so lovely to work at and interact with the animals directly. They were also great to work at to build experience on your resume if you can afford it. Just something to think about when you're planning your career!

      Donald Pedigo I’m afraid that if I get a degree in zoology then It would be difficult finding places to work that give decent pay and if I can’t find that I wouldn’t know what else I could do with that degree. The concept is pretty spot on of what I want to do though

      Hey @@veronicanajarro1445, I am caught between this and becoming a Physicians Assistant (essentially a very well paid Doctors Assistant who deals more in the side of trauma Medicine). From what i've gathered is getting a degree in Zoology would also open the door to go to the medical field as long as you tailor your degree to have certain classes that are pre-reqs.

      Generally no you can't bring the dog with you for wildlife work, the presence of a dog would interrupt a lot of surveys you'd want to do. But if you have someone who can watch the dog that would be fine! My coworkers with dogs generally had a parent or partner watch them when they were gone.

    I hope to travel a lot as a zoologist. in my senior year of college right now....are you apart of a company or organization that gives you all these jobs? Like once you do a job in a specific area will you be assigned another job that is in a completely different state from the same company? Or once your research and job has commenced do you look for new jobs with different companies and organizations?

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  4 роки тому

      So at the time I filmed this video I was working in consulting. So yes, I did many little projects but all as a permanent employee for one company. Some people take seperate short term contracts though so you can do either one. Some people enjoy only working the summer and travelling to different countries so they’ll just short term contracts but there is more instability and sketchy pay associated with that.

      Hmm, I would say some well known ones are university of Montana, colorado state in Fort Collins, U of California Davis (esp wildlife disease/health) in the US off the top of my head. I would look for cheapest schools with a degree in ecology/wildlife/environmental biology and some interesting research labs so you could potentially volunteer or network with those professors. I went to UC San Diego and it was great too!

Ik In your video you said that it pays well depending on the position you’re in, but I want to know about how much and what position. And What type of classes would I have to take and colleges good for this job. I would like to know from someone,like you, that has gone through that. Do you think it would be better to be a veterinarian? I’m trying to find a job that I enjoy but also pays very well.

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому

      It's really hard to say how much people make, since it can vary so widely. Where i work, in the construction industry in Alberta, wages can be 50,000-150,000+. For government, closer to the lower end of the scale. I've made as low as 48,000 as an office administrator doing wildlife permits and as high as 200,000 as a northern remote worker/ construction consultant (horrible job though). Wages can be much lower in the US and outside of the construction industry. A vet and a wildlife biologists are way different jobs, a vet will require a ton of schooling and you'll be likely working in a clinic or with farm animals in the field. Take into account that even if a vet job pays more per year, the hundreds of thousands in schooling (in the US) is a huge hit and can be hard to earn back. That said, I wouldn't go into wildlife biology just because it could pay well because high paying jobs are hard to get. A wildlife biologist you'll be observing wild animals in the field and doing more hiking, remote trips, etc. Maybe look into shadowing a vet to see if thats what you would want to do?

    I was just wondering, have you ever meet a Wildlife Biologist that had a phobia related to any animal group? If so how do they counter that fear other than treating themselves by taking cognitive behavioral therapy?

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +4

      Red hmm yea I have! There’s a biologist I work with who’s afraid of snakes and we do some snake related work. I’d say depending on the animal I would just try to find a job where you don’t have to work directly with that animal or can say no to those projects. I imagine if you were afraid of like deer, where you can run into them anywhere, then some therapy focused around phobias would be best. I don’t know much about that side of things to be honest so I don’t have a ton of advice!

    • @RedEzelt
      @RedEzelt 5 років тому +2

      @@kristina_lynn Thank you for responding! I was curious considering that I've been around a number of animal lovers that have animal related phobias and believe it'll get in the way of animal related careers, I'll be sure to let them know that it's not going to end any future career! haha

      I would recommend you meet with the counsellor at the online schools you're looking at so you can see what classes you need to take to get in or transfer, since every program is different. As I talk about in the video i link above, I would also recommend trying to work in some volunteer work, internships, or research experience during college - it may be tough if you're working and taking care of your son, but can be the difference between getting a job or not after graduation.

    I would very much love to become a wildlife biologist and i also love to travel ...but I'm just concerned if I can make enough money in the field ...atleast its like that here in India ...but if there is a way that i can make enough money ...please inform me ...and due that very reason , I'm currently planning to study forestry since forest officers are paid well... so i would like to know if that's a good career as well. You seemed to know a lot about this ..so please help me out :)

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +1

      I think forestry is a good option and honesty forestry usually pays much more than wildlife. Generally anything associated with the natural resource industry in any subject pays much better than other careers. So being a wildlife biologist for oil and gas, mining, forestry industry pays the highest. So that’s where I would focus my search if you’d value a higher paid career more. I’m not super informed about India but I do have lots of Indian viewers so maybe someone else can chime in!

      @@kristina_lynn Thank You very much for your time. Really helpful. And btw what does, being a wildlife biologist for oil and gas or mining mean ? I mean what's your role in that field ? :)

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +1

      In those roles you’d be studying the impact of a new development (mine, pipeline) would have on wildlife and habitat. Or monitoring during construction to make sure wildlife harm is reduced.

      @@kristina_lynn @Kristina Lynn Oh OK thank you very much! And what if I wanted to ignore my income and go deeper into wildlife, like say studying a certain specie, would I have scope for it ? If yes , what would be my average income and will there be travelling included? I want to be a wildlife biologist and be put in the field and traveling it’s what I dream of, but is it logical to have a pet if you’re never there? how much time and how often are u away from home.
    I guess what I’m trying to say is that I want this job so badly but I also have a plan for how I want to live at home, and I’m worried that I wouldn’t be home long enough to have a stable home life.
    Cause I wanna have my horses at home with me on a big ranch with a family but I don’t know if I would be home enough to do that
    Sorry for this splurge of words, buts I’m always at odds with myself with this

    • @kristina_lynn
      @kristina_lynn  5 років тому +1

      I have a cat and it works out because my partner watches him when I’m gone, but I think it would be very hard to have a large ranch and big family and be away from home a lot. I don’t know how old you are but you can always try out field work for a bit and then transition into an office job or a local field job (like within the city). I want a family and would love a house and giant garden and chickens but I can’t afford that anyway so maybe in my 30s haha 😂

      Depends on the company policy - I bring bear spray always and we are only allowed to travel out in the bush with another person with us, no working alone. In some positions doing bear den surveys, biologists have someone armed with them. Depends on the country too, in Canada we carry weapons less but perhaps some biologist positions up in Alaska would :)

Some wildlife biologists do use a lot of math in concepts like population estimates or wildlife disease research. so generally a good basic understanding of math is great to have
