I live in Texas; going to try snaring blue crabs. Great video. Thanks
Good luck to you. Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. Since blue crabs are a bit smaller maybe use thinner gauge mono like 100 lb better action for snaring the crabs. I use 150 lb for the larger dungeness in PNW.
After many trips of my loops getting messed up, this video is extremely helpful! I never thought of taking out the curve with hot water! 🤦🏻♂️ Thank you for the lesson!👍🏼
I'm glad you were able to use the content to help out. GL crabbing this season. Are you local or Bay Area?
What size crimps or ferrules did you use?

@@BackFishing thank u very much, I’ve watched you how to make crab snare videos and making the loops parallel to the loop hole was challenging for me, same goes for making the loops not so loose that they don’t droop. Again thanks
I never knew about that hot water trick to fix leaders... Nice job thanks for all your great advise!
I'm glad you got something out of it. Details to making the snares make a huge difference in success. 🤙 🤙 🤙
Excellent. I've started making my own snares after doing the math. For about $80, I can make about 50. Way less than $15 lame ones at the local tackle shop, but I do like Airflys.
Congrats on making your own. Your custom snares are so much better than the store ones. Loops are far superior which is really important.
@BackFishing I live in SoCal where the snares are illegal to use. On my recent trip to NorCal, I opted for a Promar snare and the loops were just complete trash! I was so frustrated, thus the visit to your video. Thanks for the great video!
Love your videos. They inspired me to go crab snaring up here in Washington. Keep up the great work.
Thank you. Good luck. Your fishery is awesome up there. Salmon season is coming up next week or so PNW rivers.
Thanks to Steve and Quan for some insightful information regarding snaring at the surf and also giving me their custom crab snares they did themselves.
Good vid!! I agree with you about the loops being the most important part of the making of the snares. My loops were not the best so I have copied others in both line type and size and placement. If I use the dikes like you do I cut the loops off! I started using vise grips to avoid that problem. I don't follow any set rule but have been using the bait box like yours. Thank you for all the info!!
I just found and subscribed! My daughter lives in Salem and I frequently visit and wanted to take up crabbing and my daughter loves crab so now I want to experience this with her both novice hahaha I’m currently I living in Hawaii and growing up I did a lot of diving and fishing as a kid what my dad thought us boys so this looks like something easy for my to learn with my daughter as I’m getting older to retirement 😂! You have a great channel and very informative! Keep it up maybe I’ll ask you a few questions later on easy location to crab for old folks hahaha thanks again! I enjoyed the videos 🤙🏾Aloha maybe I’ll retire there 😂
Thanks for watching brah! Fall months thru Jan are the best months for crabbing. Good fun and good eating the crabs.
The best! Thanks!
I'm glad it was useful. Good luck snaring.
Hello, thanks for the video. How do you wrap the metal wire around the ferrules to keep the loops in place after installing the loops?
The ferrules are crimped and the caged wire ends are twisted with pliers. I hope I answered your question. If are referring to extra wire to position loops. You just have to play around with the orientation. Good luck.
I just tried to made one, and well; I guess I made the loop lines too long or its the memory that messes it up... (and I guess it too late for the "jacuzzi" treatment...) I least I got the bait box in a good way lol, just annoyed that I wasted Mono and sleeves on that attempt
If the line is not twisted, you can just dip the cage and loops quickly in hot water to make it springy again. It's worth a try.
Where did you purchase the wire cloth for the traps? Thank you for the info. 16:50
I want to make them and I don’t even live near crabs lol
You need a sleeve crimping tool
Definitely easier but cutters still work well for the project to keep cost down.🤙🤙
Nice video. I remember the youtuber Joy of Living saying that he uses weed wacker lines that are hexagon heptagon or octagon shape. Do you know if that works better than the rounded shape weed wacker line? What mono brand of lines are you having success with for your loops? Have you tried the Momois X-Hard mono line for your loops?
I've found 150 lb to 200 lb hard mono works better than the weedwacker lines for Dungeness. Having tested them for the last couple few years. I favor the monofilament versus the much stiffer weed wacker lines which is harder to orientate/maneuver. Although, they may more durable, the mono snares much better. Let me know if you have any other questions. Momois is awesome. Good luck.
@@BackFishing when you say hard mono are you just referring to the Mason brand of line or are there other hard mono brands that you’ve tried?
@@deerphoria4314 Have not experienced using Mason brand which is more expensive and harder to find but the others mono 150 lb to 200 lbs works just as well.
Hi, I enjoyed your video. I wanted to know what kind of rubber you used to close the door?
I just ask my local bike shop for any old throw away bike innertubes which they gladly gave for free. I just cut them to rings. GL
@@BackFishing thank you so much for your quick respond. I am making for blue crabs. What pounds of fishing line you think will be good? Thanks ☺️
@@lucymedina9305 I would go with 100 lb mono. That should do the trick. The blue crabs aren't to heavy like dungeness out here in the PNW.
Thank you for your respond. Blessings @@BackFishing
Excellent video except: Do you prefer that the loops are vertical (upright, 45 degrees to the bottom/substrate) or horizonal laying down flat to/on the bottom (substrate)?
I prefer them upright although the other works just as well. Looking at underwater footage from videos out in UA-cam looks like the crabs feed with their hind legs buried in the sand to stabilize them from the current and fend off potential crabs coming to feast.
@@BackFishing Do you tighten the snare line at the trap "tightly" so it stays firmly or do you prefer it to be "loose" so to move/float with the current/tides ( i.e., sideways in the vertical loop arrangement or up an down in flat laying loop arrangement). The attachment at the trap is opposite (on a vertical wire or a horizontal wire) with different loop arrangements.
@@ronmodafferi8202 The position of the loops are important. I usually prefer them snug so they are always in the position desired. Sometimes when the loops lay correctly they can be fasten/crimped loosely to the cage so it will float vertically up and down with the movement of the current.
Thanks< I will try both methods. Being in OR you must know my friend PK? I'm in SF bay area.
@@ronmodafferi8202 Yeah, we are going to do something in the future together. It'll will be fun.

What’s a decent rod to start out with for getting into crab snaring?
10' to 12' rod with lure rating up to 6 oz 10 oz.....reel size can be 6000 to 8000 size. I got my set up through deals on Offerup, Craigslist, and FB Marketplace or you may go to Walmart Super stores etc...it doesn't have to be high end equipment but you pay for what you get in terms of how long your equipment will last. Let me know if you have other questions. GL
That's great can i buy ?
There have been several interest in my snares but if you are local. I would be willing to get some out to you. Where you located?
Great video. Any suggestions on 100 lb mono or will any brand do?
Thank you for watching. Knowing what I know now, I would go heavier mono up to 200 lbs. It's more durable especially catching 7 inch dungeness crabs. Blue crabs with 100 lb work but I guess you have to determine what's best for your target specie. l will be giving 2 crab snares at the end of September random giveaway celebrating for 1000 subs. Make sure you subscribe and enter a comment in my next upcoming video. Good luck.
Thanks looking forward to more of your videos.
Do you make the loop so it faces the natural direction that it wants to retract back to? 5:13
Straighten the mono first in hot water to make sure it will become springy when you make the loop. Yes, usually go with the direction the loop wants to go.
@BackFishing I finally tried this out, but my lines come out worse than they were before I put them in the boiling water. They better with the natural curve they had when they wrapped in a coil. What did I do wrong?
@@emtae3 I use no less than 150 lb mono. Could your line be too thin or twisted in it's orientation? That's all I can think of. I've done these with snares I've found scavenging on the surf at minus tides. GL
@BackFishing ahh. It's maybe because I used nylon for weed eaters. Will try again with mono. Thanks!
@@emtae3 Now that you mention you used weed wacker line. Each weed wacker line is different. They have different ridges on the line for cutting. Mono line does not come with these ridges so it is better for the snares. I get it, weed wacker line is cheaper.
sir can i use that on a mud crab? im from Philippines
I don't see why not. Try giving it a go. It's easy to make. Good luck.

@@noonelovesme8906 Very welcome. Hope to go back to PI someday to do some local style fishing. I remember seeing those big dark mud crabs in the market when I was a little kid growing up. GL
Where can I find 100lb - 200lb hard mono line?
Amazon. I prefer 150 lb after all the testing.
Thanks for your quick response!

Can I buy a couple snares from you ?
At this time I am not selling any of my snares but if I do. You will learn it from this channel. If I may suggest "Joy of living" sells, "Ken the crab slayer" down south. I don't know any in the Northwest. GL🤙🏽🤙🏽
I am in Oakley
How much are they?
You should just make them. The custom snares normally go for $15.00 to $25.00 depending on if you have weight melted unto the cage. I don't sell them but I can put you in touch with people that do. 🤙🏽
@@BackFishing what line do you use for a loops?
150 lbs is good all around.
