"Your illogical approach to Codenames has its advantages on occasion, Captain." - Spock's 3rd game of Codies.
From a game design perspective, I find it super fascinating how the play dynamics shift when the board size scales up. The loss of significant signal jamming alone really changes the feel of the game. I write a game design blog, and I think I'll have to examine Super Codenames next week. :)
3x3!
THREE BY THREE!
H Y P E R C O D I E S
76 reds, 75 blues, 9 assassins, 65 innocents.
Or: 3 standard arrays worth of each team's targets
Already preparing my comment for that video: "4x4! Ludicrous Codies!"
I was thinking cards instead of boards. I thought hyper was referring to the speed at which a game would go.
4 by 4! OMEGACODIES!
Heart! Attack! Heart! Attack! I'm dying over here! I'm HAVING A HEART ATTACK!
Mat, "You can give a 6 clue if 4 or 5 are yours and one or two are neutral or the other teams..."
Tom, "Attack 4" 4 are his teams... 8 are the other teams.
Gah, the number of times team red was like "here is a very obvious one that we agree is correct.. so lets try picking this one we are unsure about first!"
Once the clues "MUSICAL" and "SHIP" were out there it was a race for NET and PITCH
I feel like Anna is gonna get a check in April addressed to Hadrian R. Thames.
Anna: I want to crush them.. this is everything you need to know about her. Savage-in-nerds-clothing
I'm in love
1:55:11 I don't think it was just bad luck. As good as Tom is in other games, I think he gave some bad clues in this one. If nothing else, repeating the same clue is usually a bad move, as it doesn't help move things forward.
On top of that, most of his clues were really big stretches for the words that were his (I couldn't even piece together half of the words he was aiming at with most of his clues) but super obvious ties to the opposing team's clues. He would have been better off focusing on much more targeted clues for smaller numbers of cards, as at least then the team wouldn't be as likely to give so many cards to the other team.
Also, he really should have nipped "net" in the bud when it kept coming up as a possibility. Instead, he gives "Salmon unlimited" which does nothing to dissuade from "net" that the team has been debating.
I do think super codenames would be very difficult to follow blind. I wouldn't worry about being able to determine how many possible clues are remaining in a quadrant. Unless you've actually found 9 clues in a quadrant, it's possible there's 9 in that quadrant unless the opposung team has already found their 9. It also helps bring the game to a close more quickly as you near the end.
You're not swamped with feedback, I'm making sure to mention that this was awesome. I understand if you don't want to do this again any time soon, but pass on it for your sake, not ours.
also, "this might be more complicated than dune": true, but it's much easier to follow (and more exciting).
You can easily get rid of it being modular by getting a random list generator (the one on random.org works) to get the numbers from 1 to 100 mixed up and the first 32 are gonna be the red cards, next 32 are gonna be blue, 4 assasin, rest neutral and number the cards on the board for example in a snake pattern. This easily makes a normal 10x10 codes board. (did the same on regular 5x5 cause the we only had the 1 on 1 version at hand so made ourself keys instead and worked just as the original keys).
Why on earth would you give "boat" as a clue when three of the assassins are net, pitch, and crash?
EDIT: Why would you follow it up with SHIP?! And UNLIMITED?! THEY WERE STRONGLY CONSIDERING NET!!!
I found this highly entertaining, if only because of OD's decent into madness 🤣
Technically, it wasn't the Scots up there yet. It was the Picts. The Scots came later, from Ireland.
On a ship, a rope is always called a line.
HAIL MYMNOS!
The Blimey Count is quite high in this one
This was really fun to watch after getting off of work. I would love to see OD play the ripper in another Whitehall game.
Luigi 4 right at the end would have been good. Vacuum, switch, and maybe Jack (another person), and screen (for the Mario Bros. movie). This would reinforce marble also. Very tough though.
Actually that is false. The egyptians mummified more then just cats. They in fact mummified all sorts of animals. IF you ever stop by in england you can go watch and see for yourself in the british museum.
We got sucked in by the tourist trap Bath.
Anna is fucking adorable when she get's exasperated XD
Matt totally overthinks this. Avoid the obvious and tie bath to England.
Whoooooa im not even joking, Iʻm on the same wavelength as Lindz!! I said Occupation 6 right before she said Career 6. And I literally just said Lady 3 and she said Lady 3 on the same turn. thats so wild.
Hadrian's Wall is actually not a national boundary, and has never formed the Anglo-Scottish border. It did form a border of the Roman Empire for a short time, but that was centuries before either England or Scotland existed in any form.
As for not being a very impressive wall, it's worth remembering that it was never really intended as a fortification to resist serious attack; it was more to prevent large-scale movements of people.
And I need to get my school club now to play this game.
This will require a high DC persuasion check with my game group, but I can't wait to try this out!
So when are we getting the 4x4 Ultra Codies?
I enjoyed watching you play this, but it does seem like a lot of work. I kind of think the idea of playing multiple games at once also kind of fits with the secret agent theme of the game. Though I feel like in this case the captains should be able to tell them when their team has cleared out a quadrant somehow. Maybe by having the option to give the other team a clue in the quadrant that their team has solved?
I had the idea on the first one that they begin the game only in the upper left quadrant and can't move to the next until they've cleared all the clues. You move clockwise and obviously win when you've guessed all your words. It's like a race.
To avoid the counting quadrants problem/exploit(?) could you make your own mastercards that randomly distributes them so they can’t count?
You mean Super-mega-ultra-codenames? Him legend
that's 5x5...

16:48 Okay it took me awhile to get to this video, but it was my tweet that started all this! I may have screamed in outrage at this part lol. twitter.com/NoahTopper/status/1188318705450717184?s=20
For what it's worth, Jerry knew it wasn't his idea.
@@helloMCDM I thought I saw a mischievous look in Matt's eye when he said "Twitter? Nooo!" 😆
2:02:25 As someone from Finland, thank you!
28:37 I wonder what they said that was so bad they had to cut it?? 😅
Brendan Fraser is from Canadaland 🇨🇦
Agent's a little too... Bondage.
Ambient 2
Did it bother anybody else that OD insisted that Spiderman was DC when he's in the MCU
signal jamming/taking the piss; no nerd cred lost.
Anyone know what movie they're talking about @54:00 ?
Lost in Space, I think. Robby the Robot
Might be Forbidden Planet...?
They are talking about Forbidden Planet, Robby the Robot is a character introduced in the film who's prop was reused many times in other projects and as a homage is still called Robby in the other films and shows
@MCDM please slow down scrolling through the 4 squares, Its to quick for me to read them all
Pause
@@CommieCrab THe point is to try and play along with the game. not to hear them talk with no context. Its called viewer participation, increases audience size and and makes these videos more likely to be made. See, this is why Vader betrayed you, lack of community outreach. if you had focused more on Trooper rifle arms training, you would still have a death star.
I love the content you guys put out, but I have a big complaint about these Super Codenames videos. It is fucking impossible to read all the words. Might I suggest making everything else smaller, to make more room for the words? I don't know if there's any sense in that - but I don't feel like I can "play along" when I can't read anything.
I'n pretty sure 'unlimited' means 'try to lose'
OD is super good at trash talk. Not so much the game.
