REVISED 2020 How to Enable Game Chat for Xbox with the Elgato Chat Link Cable

- *REVISED 2020*
NOTE: to record my own voice I use an external mic that is plugged into my PC (I have a Blue Yeti)
I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!! This video will show you how to set up your audio recordings so you can hear team players and still chat at the same time WITHOUT BEING IN A XBOX PARTY. My other video similar to this I could only hear the other players I couldn't chat back. The 3 Ring Aux Cable is KEY!
Of course if you are streaming to viewers you will still need a USB or other audio mic to your PC so you chat with them. If you have any questions please comment below or message me on Xbox! Good luck and happy gaming!

If you don't care about wires, you can plug your controller into your headset with the aux cord and then plug your controller into your xbox one with the micro usb cable and it should work perfectly fine without the settings in this video.
So you don’t need to go through a capture card?
Nope
Dude what!!! I’m trying right now
Ya no plugging into capture card. Still need card to record but you don't need it for the cords.
I tried my volume is super low and still can’t talk. Maybe I can’t do it with this headset I dunno frustrating
Thanks my dude I can finally record game chat audio!
Sweet!! Good luck!
In still having issues

Can you help me with my setup...im still having issues
@@trevonwilliams2623 I’ll help you just give me some time lol. It’s been a year since I have recorded
2 years later and this video as just stopped me buying a PS5 to stream game chat lol thanks dude will be picking up my setup tomorrow
I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this damn game chat for so long (for the same reasons i want clips of that sweet succulent rage) and this helped a lot thank you man. Subbed 🤟
Glad I could help!! Good luck!
Dude thank you so much!!! I started my UA-cam channel recently and I have been looking everywhere for a tutorial as clear as yours. Cheers
Glad it helped!
I think you are the only one who has a video on this!! THANK YOU!!!!!
mate this video should be pushed up man I have searched for weeks for this had everything set up but no joy all the settings were out dated your video is upto date i now have in game chat thanks dude
liked and subbed what games you playing at the min ?
Glad it helped!! Right now I play Call of Duty. How about you?
You save me, I bought Xbox series x and I did not know the party chat problems on twitch! Thank you! 🙏🏻
THANK YOU SO MUCH! this video was very useful and i ended up using some of these affiliate links too!
Thanks so much! Glad it helped :)
Does this work for party chat or no
No..You wont be able to pick up game chat if you're in an xbox party
Stopping by to show some support ❤️
Thank you!!
Nice Dude.. very informative.. I've been dealing with this issue for a while now so I'm excited to try it out and see if all works. THANKS FOR THIS!
I don’t think I will need the aux cable my astros a10 have a 3 ring cable that connects to my controller and the other part that goes to my head is a 4 ring so do u think it will work with my headset
You can try that but I'm certain that it will work. I think some other people have tried with no luck. Let me know if it works though.
Thank you so much man this helped me out a lot now I have my set up decent for a beginner lol
Can’t wait to get my cable! You said you use a yeti, I use one as well. Does having the yeti set up interfere with talking to friends? If that makes sense. Awesome video though!
Thanks. I use my headset to talk to friends in game and the yeti for the stream.
Great video thanks! I see from reading the comments that I would need an extra mic for the stream chat to hear me. Will that all sync up automatically with the gameplay and party chat?
Seperate mic will be for the stream only. Headset mic will be for party.
@@JimmyKn1ves What if I go through discord instead? Would I still need two mics or would the headset mic alone work? Thanks for the reply!
It may work if you can link your headset to both xbox and stream software. There might be an issue when you need to mute if you just want to talk to your chat without game party being able to hear you. I'm not 100% sure though. I use a fairly cheap usb mic for stream and headset for game.
Thanks dude this video came in clutch with my new elgato hd60s
That George Michael tho
if I just have the chat Link cable and the headset and the controller will that work when taking just a 15-second clip
This is by far the best answer I have seen for this issue so far. It’s such a pain, though! Do you know if there is a way to make this work for a basic Xbox chat headset, like the little standard ones that plug into the Xbox controller?
Thanks! As far as I know you need the cable and setup the way I have it here. I tried 100 different ways before to get it work and nothing worked but this.
hey I got it to work but for some reason when I upload the video the pepole voices are so loud and mine is not
When I change it to analog and record gameplay, there’s NO sound whatsoever though..

@@oCapri ended up getting it all working. Gotta really fuck with your Xbox sound settings
@@Kryptknock how?
@@syrozyzucan7813 you have to play with your Xbox sound settings and the game you are playing until you get it right. I play Cold War.
PS5 needs nothing extra for game chat audio on your stream. No extra cables, no pc/laptop and no capture card needed. PS5 is literally content creator friendly. Also you can do light video editing for your recorded video content to upload to UA-cam all done directly from the console itself.
Thanks for this bro! Got this and now my streams have been a lot of fun. Much love
Great to hear!
sadly i have astros and they have no aux port any idea for a fix
Unfortunately not that I know of. If you end up figuring something out please let me know so I can tell others. Good luck!
Jimmy Kn1ves sure thing also is their a way I can just capture game chat audio of others? I’m not worried about my audio at this point
I think you'll still need a wireless headset with aux in port.
Omg! Dude thank you so much! Ima give you a follow on twitch as well
No problem! Thanks!
Ok so I bought the cord and changed that setting that said analog on elgato and I can finally record gamechat but it doesn't pick up game sound and I cant hear it out of my headset but when I change the setting back everything goes back to normal except the recording doesn't pick up gamchat so can you help?
Do you have the aux cable with 3 black rings too?
Any changes you make in obs or elgato or even the xbox settings make sure to reset those programs. Also turn mic monitoring all the way down in the xbox audio settings.
Let me know if you still need help after that.
Good video now I have to try this setup with the Elgato 4K 60s+
Let me know if you get it to work! It would be good to know.
Great video but what about game audio how do I get that as well as the party audio?
You can get game audio too. If you're using obs to record make sure the elgato software isn't open at the same time. Also try and reset your headset if audio isn't coming through.
Clutch! Thank you again !
So I have a Astro a20 wireless headset so I cant plug in a 3.5mm cable :( theres no jack for it or hole for the cable
Me too 😢😢
Thank you so much I didn't think to turn up the audio gain in game capture hd and then I just so happen to turn down mic monitoring so then I screwed myself again so this helped me figure out those problems lol. The only issue I'm having now is that it records my voice too through the mic monitoring which is kind of annoying but luckily when I listened to my test run my voice was much lower than all the other audio so hopefully it ends up not being a huge deal. Anyway, thanks again!
No problem!
Weird though...I have mic monitoring turned all the way down and it works fine for me. Glad it works though!
@@JimmyKn1ves y yeah I was thinking it should've worked fine with it turned all the way down but for some reason no one's voice was coming through. I'll mess with it some more but yeah it's good enough for now
Oh well..Glad it works!
To be sure
If I’m using chat link cable setup like your is will my chat on twitch be able to hear me and game chat through just my headset or would I still need an external mic connected to PC for chat to hear me and my headset mic would still work in game ? Just to clarify
Could you possibly connect the capture card end to a phone instead to record audio? I don't have an elgato but it seems that all this cable does is split the audio so you can hear game chat, if you could possibly test this, that would help me out a bunch! Thanks man
I have done this before where I change it from HDMI to analog. the problem is that I bought a new computer and when I tried to change it for analog there isn't an option for it. what do I do now
I can hear people talking on game chat on stream but their voice volume on it is extremely low. What settings do I need to mess with?
I need help on an iMac! Can you help me get any output for my audio?
argh i have the stealth 700 gen 2 headset, no jack port????, could i get a jack to usb port 3.0 converter, would that work
Will this work the same if i have a wireless mic? Steel Series 9x for Xbox. It does have an aux hole.
If you mean wireless headset then yes absolutely. Mine is wireless.
On stream, it can hear my game chat. My party chat can not hear me, though. It doesn’t even show that I am talking. I do have an additional mic plugged into my pc for my viewers to hear me, but how do I resolve my party not being able to hear me? I verified all levels are correct. Thanks!
Turn mic monitoring down, check 8:28 to see where it is the xbox settings. Hope that works
also make sure the aux cable has 3 rings, probably black, on the tips like mine does
Thanks Jimmy! Solid, mate!
No Problem glad I could help.
Great video my dude, do you know of a way to use the Yeti or another usb mic as the mic source for both stream chat and game play? if not, is there any delay in the sound from either mic (your way of setting it up) since technically the stream is hearing you from both the yeti and the headset mic?
I know of you turn down mic monitoring on the xbox audio settings you should get audio to the stream from your headset. Usually if people are getting an echo its due to mic monitoring. Sometimes if your getting both mics being recorded it can also be in the actual game settings too. I'm on PC now so no more Xbox audio issues for me but I can still try and help :)
Jimmy, what's up man I am having an issue with my headset. It does not have an auxiliary port in it? It has a USB-c. It's the turtle Beach 700 gen 2 but they have no aux...
sorry but i need help, i have everything set up correctly. elgato chat link pro cable. my stream can hear everything but MY FRIENDS cant hear me
a little late to the party so I think my issue was the 2 ring cable, I have the same headset, if I buy the 3 ring one will it capture the Xbox chat?
Does both of your cords that have the same end cords have 3 black rings or does one have 3 and the other end has 2?
3 black rings are on both sides.
@@JimmyKn1ves thanks lol tomorrow i can hook eveyrthing up and see how everything turns out lol thanks for the help
Since the headset is connected to the Xbox and not pc will you not be able to hear your pc audio such as music/alerts when streaming?
so i cant hear anything from both sides of sound
no xbox sound
or pc
whats the sound settings i need for xbox??
What if you have a wireless headset without the 3.5mm or wired headset?
What if your wireless headset don’t have a headphone jack?
Hello, when I have my chat link cable and everything hooked up properly my computer doesn’t have a gain switch on the audio tab in the 4K capture utility that I use and my game audio is distorted on the recording, sounds robotic almost (sounds fine without chat link cable) having a hard time getting any answers as to why I’d appreciate any advice You have my Xbox audio output set to headset and speakers and have tried both just speakers and just headset with no change
So I have a wired headset, do I really need a wireless headset in order for this to work?
Would this work with a splitter attached to the chat link pro and so gato capture card? I have a usb/aux mic and a laptop. Could I use my in ear headphones / wired earbuds, a 3 ring splitter and my usb aux cord connected to my mic . The usb port is plugged into my computer and the aux part of the mic on mg desk top mic.could i plug my splitter into the chat link pro as a headset and mic that way? Or does it need a wired headset to work?
What if I'm using the hd60 pro on my pc? I'm trying to do the same thing while streaming on my xbox. I want to capture game chat also. I already use a separate mic for my viewers to hear me but they can't hear my friends
I think it works the same way with the Chat Link cable but you just plug the cable into the PC Line-in instead of the Capture Card itself.
I also found this that explains it: Good Luck!
1) Plug the male 4-pole 3.5mm jack of the Elgato Gaming Chat Link cable into your Xbox controller
2) Plug your compatible headset into the female 4-pole 3.5mm port of the Elgato Gaming Chat Link.
3) Plug the male 3.5mm jack of the Elgato Gaming Chat Link cable into the 3.5mm line in port of your computer’s sound card on the back of the desktop tower
@@JimmyKn1ves thank you so much for the quick reply! I've ordered the cables already and will try it out when they come in. Thanks again and a new subscriber 🤘
@@almostskater805 thanks and good luck!
do you use your xbox mic and pc mic at the same time? or do you just use the xbox mic
Xbox mic for chatting to other players in the game and usb pc mic to record my voice and chat to the stream if I'm streaming on Twitch.
Okay so I have all the wires connected right but no audio is goin through what so ever until I plug out the chat link cable out of my controller but I can hear the game and everyone in the headset when plugged in ofc
Does it have to be a ElGato capture card? Or can it be off brand and still work?
Does it work for party chat also will we need a laptop
To record party chat you don't need the chatlink cable. If you want to record other players like enemies etc you will need to do this setup and yes you'll need a pc or laptop.
Amazing video man! So, I guess that if I have a wired headset with microphone, I don't need the aux cable, right? I just plug my headset and I am good to go?
Thanks. Yes just make sure analog audio is set in obs and elgato software. Should work for ya
@@JimmyKn1ves you just got a new sub man. Keep grinding!
Thx bro!
I'm going to try this I appreciate this
Since I can't find an answer to my question: with this set up, are you still able to hear other audio input in your OBS? Like, you're in a voice chat with friends with this set up and someone follows or subs to your twitch channel, would you be able to hear the sound of said alerts? This isn't a major issue, it just would be nice to have the visual AND sound alert (so I can react by not looking at my other screen).
I believe so. I switched over to pc gaming now but i think i remember still hearing the alerts in my headset.
i am so lost. i can hear chat chat through obs with the chat link but now ppl in game cant hear me my mic doesnt even pop up
with the chat link cable, do i need a separate mic for my stream or will my headset mic also get recorded and sent through OBS so my stream can hear me through my headset mic? was thinking about getting an hd60s+ when they become in stock! this is the first and only video that talked about what i needed! hope to hear from you! thank you for the informative content
Thank you glad it helped. Yes you will want an external mic to chat to your stream. I have the Blue Yeti and it works great but you can get cheaper ones that are great as well. Good luck!
@@JimmyKn1ves got it! i have a blue snowball sitting around from years ago that totally still works. that's awesome and that even solved my "two mic set up" question. i appreciate your feedback and just subscribed! will definitely check you out on twitch! just hit affiliate and want to upgrade the quality of my stream. i will hope the hd60s+ becomes in stock soon! stay safe and i'll see you online!
Awesome!! Congrats on reaching Affiliate and thanks for the sub!
I know this is an older video but only issue I have now is the game audio is crazy loud compared to my friends in party. I've messed with every setting I'm aware of. any ideas or things you suggest trying?
Joe Joe here and this is helpful
Thx Joe Joe!!!!
What would you need to do with the extra microphone to stream?
as far as i know, youll have to be streaming from PC and plug the 2nd mic into the pc. not sure if it works if you stream directly from xbox.
thanks mate really helped me.
Thank you, this worked for me.
I don’t have a gaming headset, I use the Sony wh 1000x m3 along with a aux cord that has a mic on it. The cord had three rings where the cord plugs into the controller but where it plugs into the headset it only has two. Will this still work?
I don't think it will work. Also far as I know it needs 3 so it picks up left side right side and the mic so you can still chat.
Quick question, if we follow these instructions will we be able to record our party chat along with the ww II game chat together? Also, to record your own voice do we need to get a usb speaker or is that not required?
If you're in an xbox party you'll have to switch to game chat to hear other players in the game. Ideally you'll want to use an external mic to record your voice however in the game the other players will be able to hear your voice clearly through your headset, your voice just won't come through clear or at all in the recording when you're outside of a closed party chat. Hope this helps!
Jimmy Kn1ves got it thank you so much! I’m going to be experimenting a bit with all these wires. Hope I can ask you for help in the future :)
Absolutely! Good luck!
Jimmy Kn1ves update: So I did what you did, I got an aux cord with 3 rings on each end, but when I plugged that into my px5 turtle beach it started making a really loud screeching sound. I took a 2.5 to 3.5 mm aux cord with one end having 2 rings on one end and 3 rings on the other end. I used only that and I am able to hear myself, the party chat, and everyone can hear me. I am able to do all of this without an external microphone and without an aux cord with 3 rings on each side. Why do we need an external microphone for gameplay to be recorded?
How come when i use the chat link cable on my xbox it Grey’s out the headset chat mixer?
Just came across your video... new to this streaming stuff..
Brought my self a gaming laptop and am going to be streaming off that am going to be using my xbox series x with the elgato capture card... seen a few people have problems with no chat audio... ive brought a chat link do you have any videos on that or will the elgato capture that once in party i dont want to buy a separate mic no space i want to be using my micphone on my headset if possible
If you're in an actual xbox party it will pick up the party voices if set up properly. I think there are lots of videos on that out there. But if you're not in an xbox party it will not pick up other players voices.
10/10 step by step guide thanks man!!
Glad I could help 😁
Excellent video! One question. How long is the portion of the cable that connects from the elgato to the controller?
The whole cable itself is 6ft long. I have the elgato tucked behind my desk and everything reachs just fine. Thanks for watching!
Guys another thing make sure u go to the audio settings in ur xbox and put it on Headset and speakers
Nice video bro 👍🏼 one quick question. I don’t know if you mentioned this and I just missed it but if I just want to record the voice Audio not to stream just to capture gaming content and Game chat/ party chat.
Do I still need an external mic ?
I currently have the Arctis 9x I was hoping that would work just fine to record Party/game chat and my own voice of course.
I do have the HD60S. I’m not using OBS I’m using the capture card software. ( Xbox one )
Thanks dude 👍🏼
That should work bit your voice may be super quiet...try turning up mic monitoring i. Xbox Audion settings to pick up your voice better however this may cut out game chat a bit. Play around w the settings though it may work...external mic is always best for your voice
Jimmy Kn1ves Hopefully it’ll work 👍🏼 Thanks for the feedback bro 👍🏼
@@RogeerJust4 did your mic audio end up being quiet? That’s the issue I’m having now hahaha
Have you figured out a way to be able to adjust your volume with those controls on the back of your stealth 700’s? I have the same headset and sometimes I like to adjust so either the games not too loud or so I can hear my friends better
No, when the aux is plugged in you can't use the controls however when the aux is plugged in a new audio section pops up in xbox settings...click xbox button>scroll far right>scroll down to audio then you can adjust it there. Let me know if you have any issues w that. Cheers!
Excellent video.
I'm a knife guy too and have looked everywhere for this info. Unfortunately I have the elgato HD which has an A/V input and my turtle beach only have a micro usb input so I will have to invest in HD60S (it's out of stock everywhere!!!!!!!).
Glad I could help! If you ever want to play hti me up. All my gaming info is in the description. It would be fun to get a knife only lobby going.
Hi, I have the same problem. I have the turtle beach that only has a micro usb Input and I did just order the HD60S so how will it work for me if I don’t have the AUX cable port available??
Is it possible to record game chat and gameplay audio if you’re on PC and your friends are on PS4? Like they’re games that allow crossplay feature like COD Warzone and/or Fortnite. I was trying to see how do I record game chat (friends and my voice) and the gameplay audio itself being on a different platforms and not using discord. I’m on PC and they’re on Console.
Hey yes I am actually now playing on PC and can record my voice, my friends voices, enemy players and the actual game. Your friends voices should come through no problem with your being on PC but for your voice you may need an external mic which is what I use. I don't use discord and everything comes through perfectly. Hopefully this answered your question, if not let me know. DM me in Discord is easiest to reach me. discord.gg/DKfnWDdd
Thanks man, I’m starting a trolling channel called Dumbster Juice and for the longest time I could never get my voice on the recording. Do you have any experience with recording your own game audio through a standalone mic (like a small diaphragm Shure or large diaphragm Rose NT1A) and using headphones to hear? Does that make sense?
Yes I use a Blue Yeti usb mic to record my own voice then I use my headset to hear and chat with other players.
Jimmy Kn1ves would you mind doing a detailed set up tutorial for that? I’m assuming that’s how content creators manage that crystal clear audio of themselves while maintaining the normal game chat audio sound? I’d greatly appreciate it man, this video was really helpful, you go into more detail than the others and I’d love to just see a tutorial run down of that style set up and how to align the audio from the mic with game and all that good stuff
So the setup is exactly the same as my video..you're hearing my voice through a usb mic that is plugged into my pc. I use OBS studios software, elgato capture card, elgato chat link cable and my xbox to get my voice, game chat and the actual game. Hop into my Discord and I can show you screen shots. Link is in description of this video
What if I don’t use controller and play on mouse and key? Where would I connect the cable to? I don’t like using controller on my Xbox
I’m getting full game sound. But even when I make a party I’m still not getting any sound. Tips?
Bro nice vid- i cant plug anything into the headset (astro a50) but i can into the base station that the a50’s charge up at. I’m guessing just plug it into there from the controller as the headset like i said doesnt have an aux right
Thanks! I believe that is how it works but I have never tried that because I don't have that headset. If it works please let me know :). Good luck!
did it work?
I have a wired mic so I'm not sure how this is going to affect me or not? Also, just to be sure, my friends will be able to hear me in game chat and I will be able to record it as well? Please get back as soon as you can.
Hey as far as I know a wired headset won't work. I have never tried and no one else I've seen has got this to work unfortunately. If you do get a wireless headset and get game chat to work then your friends will be able to hear you but in order to record your voice you will need an external mic.
Does this work for fortnite? That is the only game I seem to not be able to hear game chat...
Do think I would have to use a headset audio adapter with the elite controller series 1?
I don't think so unless it doesn't have the hole for the aux.
At first it was not and I figured it out after I did all the elgato settings and the stream labs audio shit it was not working but double click on ur elgato in obs in the sources section click configure video then click on with analog audio and it should be good to go
Awesome man! So many people have asked that question but they couldn't get it to work and I couldn't help them because all I have is the wireless headset! 👍
Jimmy Kn1ves ye a lot of videos just show with a wireless headset cause there on pc and I saw one video with a wired were a dude used 3 controllers and it was confusing but I figured it out myself at the end I did all ur steps
