Simple egg-free writing & outlining icing (Royal icing substitute)

- I never bother making royal icing to pipe fine lines and words. Here's what I do instead, no egg, no fuss, 30 seconds and you're good to go. I also show how I make my cellophane piping cones which are so much easier to both make and use than parchment cones. I can get a perfect tip every time, and just cut to the size I need.
Note: this icing may start to separate or dry up in the cone, just like royal icing, over time. Best made just when you need it and used fresh.

Your recipe was a life saver and the best part was that it was quick and simple I've spent months looking for a recipe that would allow me to pipe details with ease but nothing ever helped they kept turning out like the flooding consistency thank u soooooo much for your recipe and tutorial I just wish you showed us how while u were piping but over all a great tutorial

+Fancy Favours & Edible Art I don't think the quality is bad at all what makes me over the moon happy is everywhere I look the recipe contains egg whites I live in Africa and here it's quite hard to find pasteurized eggs or meringue powder so ur recipe was a dream come true as it didn't require either ..in short u were exactly what I was looking for I can't believe it took me so long to find u

+Mahii Tistic did you use sifted powdered sugar? It should not be grainy if properly mixed and with fine powdered sugar.

To avoid sugar melting... maybe can add a bit more flour into it... to thicken it and maybe stay in shape... never tried but... might work ya
I agree, as someone who lives in a hot country, sugar melting would be a problem. I will try this next week since i will bake a cake for my dad.

i tried this now .. the consistency is between thick and thin (i can create ribbons).. but when i try to pipe it on the cake or on a parchement paper, it doesn’t hold its shape :(

Hi there! I found you while searching for an easy icing recipe to pipe writing on cakes. I read one of your comments stating that this can be piped on a crusting buttercream. How about an ordinary chilled buttercream frosted cake? Will the icing mix with the buttercream?

Just use a piping bag or baking paper and if you're using baking paper than do the same thing

Icing sugar is basically powdered sugar
Did it work it looked like a liquid
so just icing sugar and water do i need to use food coloring because i feel like it might get watery so i just need water and the sugar powder do i need food coloring?
+Melina Sosa food colouring is optional, and add water only a few drops at a time to prevent it getting too thin 🌼

hi sawsen, ive tried this today but it clogged inside my piping bag.. im so frustrated and dont know how to do 😥
+marina etuci hi, sounds like there is a lump of icing sugar undissolved in the nozzle. If there are many lumps you may need to start again and sift the icing sugar before use. If its mostly smooth you can just wash out the nozzle and try again, or use a needle or cocktail stick to try and unclog the nozzle. This has the same ingredients as royal icing except for egg replaced with water, so it shouldn't clog. Good luck 🌸
Fancy Favours & Edible Art yeah ive tried unclog it using a toothpick but it ended up making the lines not smooth,hard to get a straight line, perhaps my powdered sugar is not well fine. what icing sugar brand did you use? i notice my icing becomes gritty too 😥
+marina etuci that does sound like a problem with your icing sugar. I use Silver Spoon icing sugar brand here in the UK, but I have also used Tate & Lyle in the past before... I would have expected either of those to work alright. Whitworths also make a "superfine" icing sugar but I haven't tried that before 🌸
Well maybe next time i try again huhu,its kinda frust me out when it doesn't turn out well.. i will try to find the good brand of sugar icing later!
+marina etuci you could also try making a cellophane cone like I use here, if the tip gets clogged you can just trim it a tiny bit and unclog it more easily than a nozzle. Good luck 👍

+tweeterbird hi, you could use it as a glaze, but personally I find it takes a long time to set and the colours seem to leech out and mix together if you use more than one colour. If you don't like royal icing I would use rolled fondant/ sugarpaste instead then just pipe details with this

I think you misinterpreted the title; it is called "writing & outlining icing", as in a type of icing that is suitable for writing and for outlining. Since the video covers how to make the icing, I'd say the title is just fine. I'm sure there are plenty of other videos out there that focus on writing with icing :)
