    • @jamesmacgregor3911
      @jamesmacgregor3911 6 років тому +1

      BizzyIzzy87 Ric embodies what it is to be a professional wrestler. He lived his gimmick, his gimmick is his life. He sacrificed his family for his gimmick - all he wanted to do and be was Ric Flair. Everything he was, everything he has been, is and will be is because of wrestling. I don't believe Ric as a person would be a very nice person to be around all of the time and I also believe that because of his longevity and his sense of entitlement - he felt that when he said "he can't make it" "he's not a good worker" that it was true. You look at Ric and what you see is a man who has aged with time and I think he's become more accepting of his flaws and weaknesses and he has accepted the fact that the legend of Ric Flair didn't happen by his own design. He took the idea from Buddy Rogers and made it so much more than what it was. Everything about Buddy Rogers - was transitioned into Ric. Now people look at Ric, like Ric looked at Buddy.
      I'm a firm believer in become indespensible at what you do, if you can become that and you enjoy what you do - you're laughing every day of your life. Ric did that. He gave you the performance of a lifetime and he did so at a tremendous cost. No other performer in wrestling has given that much of themselves that they've actually lost who they are and liked the person they play so much better. He embodies wrestling. He had a huge half of fame induction ceremony the longest one there has ever been, he was given a farewell party that may only ever be duplicated for The Undertaker and possibly Triple H in the many years to come. He's had 16 world title wins, second cumulative longest time as a world champion than anyone in history. Sammartino had 2 world title runs in the biggest promotion in wrestling. Ric had 16 in various different promotions and his name was virtually synonymous with wrestling before he entered WWE and I think you have to respect that.
      I have never agreed with his lack of loyalty and his infidelity and also his inability to separate the man from the performer. I think he was very self-involved in those days and if he wanted to be that self-involved he shouldn't have had children and he shouldn't have gotten married because you can't have both. He's not the most gifted wrestler and his routine is stiff, always has been. His promo ability is what sold him - it's what put asses in seats and you knew where you stood with a Ric Flair match. There was predictability there and maybe that comforted some and annoyed others.

    I grew up watching Flair in Mid-Atlantic. He was a heel, I was in grammar school and I hated him so much- that is why I respect him so much today. He was wrestling. History will be the judge- and it's already revealing Hogan for the piece of shit he always was.

    • @DancerInTheHeart
      @DancerInTheHeart 7 років тому +3

      Have to disagree with you there. I live in northern Europe and knew Hogan as a child from NES game covers. Outside of the United States nobody had a clue who the hell Ric Flair was. The only men known outside of the US are Dwayne Johnson, Steve Austin, Hogan and to a lesser extent Cena and a few others.

    • @alanlaughter
      @alanlaughter 7 років тому +1

      MidAtlantic ran from 1970-86. I watched Flair when NES were only letters of the alphabet, there were only 3 channels on the TV (which had one knob each for UHF and VHF), and Flair carried the torch for professional wrestling in the southeast. I've not watched wrestling in years- I'm familiar with Johnson and Austin- two of the greatest performers in the sport. Even when they were heels, people loved them. Census came along after I stopped following the sport.
      I'm glad they are famous all over the world and have video game endorsements. However, I am a little confused as to how why that criteria would be used to rate their wrestling abilities. I do not see a relationship.
      I did hear that Hogan has a home video out now of him banging his friend's wife. That was a brilliant idea, especially taping it.
      BTW- I've lived (and currently live) outside the US for most of my adult life. All of the wrestling I've seen in the last 2 decades has been on foreign channels. Hogan is till a turd.

    • @DancerInTheHeart
      @DancerInTheHeart 7 років тому +1

      Pro-wrestling is not a sport; it's performance art though that's not the point of this discussion.
      As far as global visibility and impact is concerned Flair is like a pimple on Hogan's buttock; to hardcore wrestling fans pro-wrestling is a lot more than Hogan, Andre the Giant or the Ultimate Warrior; it's all sorts of mid-carders, indy champs and guys who fell by the wayside before making it big but the public perception of wrestling is shaped by the dazzling few, who have cultural impact beyond the ring.
      . Mass medias were still primitive back in the territorial days when Flair was in his prime. The standards were a lot lower just like they were in real sports and that's why guys like Lawler and Flair managed to secure their spots despite looking like the average Joe down the street. Once you secure that spot, you're set. It's just like comparing the job market of the 70's and the situation today's millennials are in; back then you would simply walk into a decent job after getting your degree out (not that you needed one necessarily) but today's uni educated youths are scraping for menial jobs and have no certainty of being able to start to a family.

    • @alanlaughter
      @alanlaughter 7 років тому +1

      DancerInTheHeart - you have the right to your opinion. I was merely stating mine. I guess since I grew up during the days of "primitive" mass media, I appreciate the guys from that era.
      It was merely my opinion, based on my personal, eyewitness accounts of going to see people like Flair, Greg Valentine, Iron Shiek, Ivan Kolaff, Black Jack Mulligan, Wahoo McDaniel....just to name a few, step in the ring and perform. I really enjoyed it back then- it was fun.
      Sport, performance art, soap opera on steroids- it's all semantics. It's just entertainment and people have opinions on who they like.

    • @alanlaughter
      @alanlaughter 7 років тому +1

      Jobs were hard to get in the 70's too. In fact, I know of no generation that was guaranteed of the future ability to start a family. Life is hard. Those wrestlers back in those days were not getting rich- many had second jobs. Johnny Weaver was a deputy in NC at the same time he held a championship belt.

The more draws you have, the better. Good for pay per view, good for ratings, good for merchandise. /business as a whole. As far as the older draws. If they die off or start to die off. It doesn't mean it's over. You can take a once popular character and re-story line em. Maybe the guy works out more. Gets bigger, stronger. Maybe he gets mad and shows fight you thought was slipping or gone. You need good heels just as much as good baby faces. Tommy

    Most people with drug and alcohol problems aren't easy to be around. Especially if they lived a brutal life as one of the most famous pro wrestlers. What do you people expect from the guy? He has his nice and mean moments like many famous men

    Ric Flair tried fucking over a lot of people's careers and was running wcw into the ground. Plus his naked robe act for a man his age by that point in the 90s was pathetic.

      michael truthson DDP is far from a hater, he put more guys over than Rick Flair. Wrestlers have nothing but respect and nice things to say about DDP so there must be some truth if the nicest wrestler in the world have something bad to say.

      Flair's my dad all time favorite. Me personally I wasn't around during Flair's prime but I find it hard to believe that he was boring to watch when he literally was the biggest draw in wrestling in his era. Back to back sold out arenas why? Because Flair's mane was on the Marquee. Plus anyway who worked with Flair became a bigger star afterwards, so I'm confused on what it is your saying.

      Donald Massaro if you watched his early work especially with Dusty than you would understand. He is a genius with in ring psychology and promo work. There is a reason that he is considered a living legend. As a person it’s mixed but even at that people who hate him still respect him.

      Iron Man Wasn't what it once was? You mean when Goldberg and Austin were on the Tonight Show? When ticket sales, merchandise sales, and mainstream acceptance were higher than at any other point in history? The era that is generally considered the greatest in pro wrestling history?
      Just FYI, that's the era when DDP got over.
