  • I've grown some beautiful zinnia and echinacea flowers this season that I want to grow again next year. In today's video we are saving seeds from different colour zinnias and I'll be showing you an easy method to harvest echinacea seeds.
We'll also have a look around the garden to see what vegetable seeds can be saved - some we pass on and some can be stored away!
Thanks Cathi for sharing your seeds with me - they have grown some fantastic and surprising pumpkins.

I’m so pleased the seeds are doing well Linda, and the pumpkins are a bit of a lottery! I’ve got some crosses again this year too. The Turks turbans can be quite varied, and I love all the different colors on them.
I’m getting new zucchini seeds next time as mine have all cross pollinated this year, except for the yellows. The bees have been very active here in the garden. Have a great week lovely xx Cathi xx 😘

Collecting seeds is important and the grow much better already being used to the conditions in our gardens. 🌱🌼🌱

Thanks Christa - hopefully they’ll be growing even bigger, stronger and more beautiful (if that’s possible) next year 😊

Hi Linda, I leave my echinacea flower heads for the birds to eat, it's a treat to sit and watch them eating! I miss my pumpkins when I grew them years back, the Queensland Blue's, and can't think of the name of the pale orange ones/orange, what your growing looks pretty good too. Thank you for sharing.

That’s interesting - I haven’t noticed any birds on the flower heads eating the seeds - plenty on my sunflowers!! What birds do you see on them?

With this large number of flowers, you have a wonderful flower collection. There are some types of flowers I have grown that when their seeds fall to the ground also help germinate the next flower crop.

I love the flowers that grow from volunteers - so easy! I don’t mind dropping a few seeds while harvesting some to store - if they grow themselves well saves me doing it haha!!

It is true that when they grow secretly and naturally underground, they will bring us surprises one day and sometimes we will not know what flowers they are until they grow up. haha@@huttonsvalleypermaculture

I love that gorgeous red zinnia. Last summer I saved seeds from my zinnias and started the seeds which have just germinated. They will go into the garden in about a month.
I am so envious of your environment which seems not to have squash vine borers. Such a horrible pest which burrows into the stems of zucchini, summer and winter squash, killing the plant nearly overnight and overwinters in the soil. This year I am going to try a neem oil soil drench to see if it helps. Thank you for another lovely video.

Thanks Sue - good luck with your zinnias this year! Such a shame with the squash plants - I hope the neem oil does the trick so you can enjoy a huge harvest if magnificent squash 🤞🤞

So beautiful. I've ordered some zinnias, inspired by yours. They are so giving!
I'm collecting local seed currently too.

hi Linda. do you have reliable place to buy seeds that you use... am having trouble finding any of the blueberry tomato that you mention..... . just wondering if you can advise why you have the flowers you grow with your vegies please... I am always wondering what flowers / herbs to help pests stay away from vegies... many thanks....

Hi Christina I buy seeds from the diggers club or Eden seeds usually. The blueberry tomato seeds I was given so not sure where you could get those. Perhaps dm on instagram & I might be able to help you out!! @huttonsvalleypermaculture
The flowers I grow as they are beautiful, I have plenty of space and they bring pollinators in. I harvest a lot to use as gifts so they have a function other than creating a colourful veggie patch!!

What fabulous colours!! Ive never had zinnias because I'm afraid of the summer frost turning them to mush. But it is wonderful to have that flash of colour amongst the greens in the veggie garden. I grew some dahlias, lemon achillea, lots of orange calendula, Chinese chop suey greens with their masses of poached egg flowers, purple penstemons, mauve chive flowers, pink sweet williams, blue salvia and lavender. And a phenomenal wall of sweet peas! I'd especially love to have Echinacea, but it has never germinated for me. Any clues?

Wow sounds like plenty of colour at your place too! No clue actually! These plants I grew two years ago and I think I was pretty lucky having failed the year before. I can’t really remember if I did anything special- can’t imagine it. I generally throw seeds in potting mix, try and remember to water them and cross my fingers. Ah but having said all of that I think that year I started lots of seeds inside on a heat mat with grow lights - maybe there’s your clue!!!
