A Visit To My Very Neglected Garden!!
It's been sometime since I put in any effort to my garden. This week I've found a little bit of time to get a few things done. Join me for a spring tour of the vegetable patch. I'll show you what I've managed to do but also what is still urgently in need of attention.
For anyone who is interested in staying to the end of the video - I will show you what I have been doing in the house as part of my mould remediation!
If this is the first time you've heard me mention anything about that please check out my previous video, stay to the end, where I explain what's going on!

In today's video I go through both my kitchen garden food forest and my swale food forests and discuss the source of a lot of the plants. What you'll see is that I paid little or nothing to get a lot of these plants in the gro...

Comparing Soil with Growth in my Permaculture Vegetable Garden
I keep all my fruit trees pruned at head height, so I don't have this issue of trying to net really tall trees. I still get masses of fruit on a smaller tree and nothing goes to waste
yap yap yap
Will a copper ring of tape on the trunk base stop this process ?
Maybe - hadn’t thought of that - will investigate!! Thanks
How do you decide how deep to dig swales?
Love your videos ❤
Thanks Debra!!
A very good video. One concern however I did have when watching the duck processing, was having grown up on a farm myself and having had our own for the past 20 years, we never left the innards inside the duck for even an hour after the creature was killed. The reason being every creature has a host of bacteria in the gut and when killed, that bacteria goes into overdrive and begins to multiply as the creatures immune system dies with them. It is better to gut the creature immediately and gather the saved offal seperating it, ready for processing. Refrigerate all overnight then joint and sort /package for the freezer next day. The refrigerated resting overnight allows the chemicals in the creature that made them stiff (rigor mortice) to dissipate and the flesh softens and the meat is more tender.
Thanks I understand the concern! I certainly process chicken asap. The only reason I was confident to do it this way, was I was confident in the source of the information. Brandon Sheard is an on farm butcher who teaches people butchery and I’ve watched a number of videos featuring him. So far I’ve had no issues processing this way and it is great to save the delicious duck fat. We all have to make up our own minds what’s safe or not & I can understand you being hesitant with this method! Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts!
Might i suggest a clever? I put the pumkin on the floor. First swing gets the clever in. Second swing you lift the clever with the pumpkin attached and slam it on the floor to split it. You can lever the clever back and forth on a cutting board to get through the pieces once it's split, or use a rubber mallet on the clever...
Fantastic idea - I love the slamming on the floor part 😄 Thanks for watching Nicole 😊
Hi, lovely vid as usual, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching 😊
Great to see you back in the garden.😊
Thanks Michael! 😊
Welcome back Linda. You have certainly achieved a lot since your last video. I hope your renovations do the trick. Great to see you turning a negative into a positive, it's a perfect time to include some new designs into your home.
Thanks Linda 😊
Plenty to share and feed nature. Love it.

I love your garden Linda, thank you for the update. Your patch is very inspiring. It's great how you gently steer nature in the direction you want.
Thanks Natalie
Wonderful to see u back Linda!

Good day Linda, yóur gardens are beautiful and joyous! You grow a massive amount of plants and flowers, I do a fair amount of both tóo.I also have a 3 season greenhouse witch is so great too. Great to watch your videos and your knowledge of plants.thankyou

Can i visit you this saturday Linda ?
Hi Robert - at the moment I'm just sharing the property via video. Hopefully one day I'll organise a tour day or two and you would be most welcome to visit then. Thanks for watching!!
Beautiful 🎉🎉🎉🎉
It's amazing what can grow even when neglected!
I had wondered where you'd been; I don't know how I missed your previous video about your mold toxicity issues. Thank you for sharing your health journey with us; it could be information someone else is seeking. In the SE USA we are approaching fall; we had a frost that came a month ahead of the average first frost date and then almost immediately, it turned back into summer. My lettuce seedlings gasped and died. My sugar snap peas don't know what is going on; between the temperature swings and marauding armadillos (grrrr!) I am not sure I am going to get any harvest. It is so lovely to see you again, Linda. I send you healing light.
I know what you mean Sue - usually last frost here is end of Sept but I had one a week ago - really impacted my kiwi fruit vines and also the grapevines. Hopefully that's the last of it but you never know!! Marauding armadillos would be interesting to see. I did have my neighbours Highland Cattle Bull in my veggie patch a week ago and fortunately another neighbour spotted it (I was out - hence gate open) and they moved him on. Lesson learnt - always shut the gates!! Hope you are well!
Great that you are back again and great to see what you are doing in the house. I had been thinking about your condition and wondered how you were getting on. Good to see the garden carrying on with and without you. Lovely self seeding and flowering plants. Take care.
Thanks Jeanette! I'm mostly well - not always the energy I'd like but I'm used to that after so long. It's the hidden things I'm really concerned about turning around - osteoporosis and cognitive decline - hopefully once I've finished the 12 step treatment protocol this will happen. (Brain regrowth has been shown in studies overseas using MIR (neuorquant)). First step is get out of exposure which I'm still working on!! You take care too😊
hi linda, Wont be tje first time I moved a tin sheet in the veggi garden to find a black snake under. Greetings from sydney
Yes I definitely should have been thinking snake. The day before I'd come across a copperhead - they are around!!
I was wondering what you have been up to lately. I thought that when you moved the sheet of tin .there would have been a big snake under it
Ooh I should have been thinking snakes - the day before I was pulling long grass from my rock wall garden and a small copperhead dropped on my foot. Luckily we were both as surprised as each other - it slithered quickly away and I ran!!
Lovely to see you back Linda!
Thanks Maria!😊
Everything looks great. I am also dealing with mold/mycotoxin issues so not only can I relate but I'm cheering you on to regain your terrain. All the best wishes Linda from Philadelphia, Pa.
Good luck to you too!! It's difficult to convey to people who aren't affected the detailed clean up you have to do - nice there are others who truly understand (even though I wouldn't have wished for it for you x)
So good to see you back. My garden is so overgrown in places and bindweed is grr. Can you send over some ladybirds for the aphids sigh. Your garden is looking great even though neglected, lots of chicken feed and compost material. With the house once the base wood is sorted can you line the floor with the tinfoil building lining before laying tiles or vinyl? . It may help repel damp in the future. Take care and take it slowly, hopefully you are feeling not too bad. =-)
Hi Lorraine - bindweed is horrible stuff - good luck with that and I've told some of my ladybird friends to head your way (not sure how they'll go haha). I'm going to be using a hybrid flooring - looks like timber but none in it at all. The tinfoil lining would have been great under all my frame work but perhaps I will make sure that it's put down in areas that I do have to replace - anything to help reduce issues in the future. Great to hear from you again!!
Sunlight through windows is so important in a home. I love that you'll get a beautiful view of the garden too. Flowering veg is so pretty and useful. Look at all those volunteer plants ❤ You've been super busy I see . I hope you get some relief soon and can rebuild . I've been thinking of you . Take care lovely and thank you so much for the update 🥰❤❤
Hi Naomi - you’re so right - a little bit of sunshine and views to the garden brings joy - so important in our often chaotic lives! Hope all is well for you & your family xx
Hi Linda, it looks like you have done a lot since the last video.. keep on trucking.. thank you again for sharing
Thank you I will 😄
Good to see you back Linda Your garden still so giving !!! Beautiful!! Are you doing the renovations yourself?? Big job!!! 😊🌿💚
The garden is amazing - the key - let lots of plants you want go to seed, then they'll just keep popping up!! I am doing the demolition work myself mostly as I want to spot where problems are and why they occurred so that I can address those issues properly. When you get workers in they just want to get the job done (fair enough) but careful observation is actually needed so that's why I'm doing it!
@@huttonsvalleypermaculturegreat strategy I’ll give it a go!! Lucky you know what to do, I’ve started doing small renovations around the house, lucky my daughter helps me . Very satisfying in the end
UA-cam is my guide & I have a couple of wonderful neighbours for tricky plumbing bits!
Hi Linda, looks like you've been flat out and I hope the hard work pays off for you. 💚
Hi Christa - if there was nothing to do you'd get a bit bored haha! Hope you are well !!
🎉😢Hello 👋 Linda , I'm guessing you're Doing Better . Stay strong and healthy. Love.
It's a fairly slow process but getting out of exposure is step one before fixing anything else. Getting started certainly gives you a boost! Thanks for watching
Nice info thanks. I just got 6 duckling today for my off grid homestead in Thailand 🇹🇭. How do you stop them flying away if you let them out? Thank you I think I need to buy more 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Congratulations on your new duck family! You can’t stop them flying away but you can give them incentive to stay by keeping them well fed!! You don’t need more - mine just keep multiplying themselves- I’m always on the hunt for eggs (the muscovy’s hide them) to stop too many ducklings 🐥
This morning I made the first ever duck liver pate in my life, thank you so much for the recipe idea. I used chicken broth in it instead of alcohol, and no thyme, as I had none. And it is still absolutely delicious. Sealed the top with some ghee. We raise our ducks too, Muscovy, Indian Runner and Black East Indian. They are all amazing breeds. It is interesting to see that ducks are the bosses over other birds, as we raise chickens, turkeys and Guinea fowls too. Definitely ducks are the bosses. And turkeys are the frieliest and most curious in our experience.
So pleased that you loved the duck liver pate- simple food made from simple ingredients (whatever you have on hand) and it’s delicious. Ducks are amazing. And very entertaining too haha!
Roasting the duck parts a bit under a broiler before going into the stock pot wpuld be a solid improvement. Butchering was solid.
Thanks for the suggestion
I love how sustainable and mindful your lifestyle is
Thank you ☺️
Thank you very much for making this video. You are a boss! ❤
Haha thanks 😊
I believe ‘ no dig’ does put the potatoes under the ground. This seems to be a ‘Ruth Stout’ method of laying the potatoes on the ground and covering them with straw/hay or other matter to cover them. You have a very nice harvest nevertheless!
Thanks you!
Thanks so much, this video has been so helpful, just wondering what month you are doing this..
I think it was at the end of November. Where I am it is really quite cool up until then & the summer veg only starts taking off in December
@@huttonsvalleypermaculture I’m up in Bendigo and only have access to a 5x8 foot bed at the local community garden. I’m using permaculture principles and companion planting. Everything is going gangbusters at the moment and all space is utilised. I have seeds on heat mats at home for summer veggies. I’m particularly interested in your growing cucumbers up the snow pea trellis as they end. Will you be cutting back the snow peas or just growing over them? Mx
@mariepienne6 sounds wonderful! I generally just let the cucumbers grow over the snow peas - keep it simple!!
Great info I have 3 baths Hubby is oh no! As they are all cast iron wxcept one was delivered as they were renovating and I asked for it. One has water in it with some water lillies, but I need to clean up around it and in it. I hope it will attrqct one of my favourites dragonflies as they are the ninjas of the predator world I want to do this with another bath in making a worm farm. Notnsure aboutbthe other thought garden but heart if kead posioning from old baths, would need to test it. Can buy kits. Looking foward to making a worm farm. 🪱 ❤
The bath worm farms are great - good luck with yours!! The water lily one sounds fantastic- exciting if your ninja dragonfly turns up!
You need a dog to keep you company. A rat terrier would be a good choice.
I have two Jack Russell terriers which have caught mice in the backyard. I don’t let them go everywhere because of snakes. My two previous dogs were killed by snakes so I have to be cautious with these two. Others have said to get a cat but then I love all the little birds that are around! 🤷♀️ Thanks for watching
I’ve really enjoyed gathering different materials with you this morning
Haha thank you - I enjoy it 😆
Why grow so many potatoes? You said it - because it is fun! 😊 Nothing better than some homegrown potatoes with butter, salt and pepper. It’s lovely of you to share with others in the community in need. 😇
Exactly haha
Brilliant video. Thankyou so much for sharing this with us.
Thank you!
I lost so many ducks to coyote this year
Very upsetting!! I’ve lost quite a few ducks to foxes!
Hi there, we also have moisture issues and dampness in our West Gippy property which aggravates our allergies and asthma. I bought a dehumidifier- just a small model-but it is amazing how much moisture/water it sucks out of the building. Maybe one of these or even better a HVAC system could help you minimise some of the excess moisture at your place. Take care, you deserve it!
Thank you!! I do have a dehumidifier and it does great - I was also amazed at the water it draws out of the air. I also have a personal hydroxyl unit (supposed to help reduce mould and an air purifier. Not sure about HVAC’s - will have to check them out! Good luck with your water issues and health!!
Very easy to follow how you do this. Thank you.
My pleasure 😊
Why do you put the ducks in the fridge before you got them and not put them in the fridge after you got them?
It allows time for the fat to harden and there’s less chance of losing it in the gutting process. Can’t waste any of this delicious duck fat!! Thanks for watching 😊
We have 2 groups of chickens with a turkey as well.
That’s great!!
I've given up using it, because not only has it failed to contain my chickens.
That’s no good
you did amazing job for your first try i have been trying to do my own too hope yours are going better than mine have good luck to you
Thanks Jean 😊
Hi Linda ❤ amazing to think of the things around us that effect our health which we often don't consider, thank you so much for sharing with us. Will keep you in my prayers and hope the journey of renovating your home is not too overwhelmingly as you take each day and project as it comes. I was thinking as you were speaking how our lives like our gardens are filled with so many different seasons. Your video's no matter how often your able to get them out will continue to be a blessing, enjoy the times drinking in the wonderfulness of your property and those absolutely gorgeous daffodils 😍
Thanks Joanna. That’s a great way to think about our lives - not sure what season I’d call this for myself - all I know is I’d rather be out in the garden than stuck inside doing things - but that’s how it is. I’ve decided to reward anything I get done inside with a little outside time - pretty sure that’s the only way I’ll get it all done haha!!
@@huttonsvalleypermaculture ❤ I can totally relate to wanting to be outside, I think that's very wise by rewarding yourself though! It does our mind and soul the world of good doesn't it to be outside and importantly not just looking at what needs doing, but all the beauty and miracles around us, the work will always be there and this season will come to an end and another will assuredly begin! One day at a time🙏 xx
@joannabrown4238 well put - thanks again Joanna 😊
