Air Conditioner Filter Replacement

- Here is how to replace an air conditioner filter in a home air-conditioning unit. This is a very easy do it yourself job. First, locate the air filter in the air conditioning cabinet, and make a note of which way the airflow arrow points, and the size of the filter. Buy a new air conditioner filter at any home-improvement store, and remove the old filter and replace it with the new filter, making sure that the new air conditioner air filter is right side up, and that it fits properly in your home air conditioning unit. Changing the air conditioner filter regularly keeps your air conditioning unit clean inside, making it last longer, and a clean filter allows more air to flow than a dirty filter does, so it is a good idea to replace your air filer regularly.

Dude simple to the point! First time home owner of 2 years with the wife and baby! Not all hero’s wear capes my dude!
This video may be 4 years old, but it’s exactly the information I needed regarding air flow. My furnace is setup like in this video, a hole below the blower. Thanks!
*So amazingly quiet and **Fastly.Cool** in my room! 42db is at a whisper level. I bought 2 and installed myself.Very sturdy bracket and easy to adjust to fit windows of different size. Absolutely fabulous units!!*
Thanks. All the important information and not too chatty. I REALLY appreciate your pointing while explaining that the air goes INTO the machine.
You’re welcome
Thank you! After several videos, yours showed a similar ac/heating unit to my own. I was right on putting it back after cleaning my washable filter, but just wasn't sure which direction of the air flow, lol and wanted confirmation.
You’re welcome.
Hallelujah! I was going nuts trying to find where my filter went! Many thanks!!!
You’re welcome
Very helpful thank you. my vent is on wall and airflow is going up. i was confused as to which way arrow should point. So this vid helped me a lot!
+Amanda Miller You're welcome.
hoohoohoblin Just bought a new home and the living room has a filter but where the furnace is set up the seller said no filter is needed. At the bottom of the unit it says in writing how to change the filter but the seller says that only the filter for the unit that is needed is for the one in the living room along the wall. I'm so confused. Is that true. He said If I use 2 filters it voids the warranty. I've always changed the filters where the unit is but one was never in it after I bought the house. I'm probably confusing you but I hope not. Help me on this please. I have a central air unit outside also
This is just what I needed. I know how to replace the thing but I forgot the airflow part. Thanks guys!
You’re welcome
Wow...your lucky to have an a/c unit located for easy access...easy for repairs and cleaning...I have mind in the attic....
Not all heroes wear capes.
You Sir, are both a scholar and gentleman.
May the conditioned air gods keep you cool and comfortable all season round.
Thanks. I’m glad I could help.
Thanks for making this simple, best on the internet. Thanks again.
You’re welcome
Thank you. This was very helpful as my place has the same AC setup.
You're welcome.
12/2020...I needed this, THANKS
Omg you saved me...I been calling maintenance and they are so trifling..I finally found where it was because of this video
Even though this is not an AC unit, as you stated, great tutorial, thanks!
You’re welcome
OMG thank you so much. This video was so helpful. My landlord told me to change the filter but never showed me how.
You’re welcome
I have an old system. I've always had trouble and still haven't figured out how or what size filter goes in there. That bar you have to hold it down I have the opposite of that I think its turned around. It's so awkward. Bit I guess I do need to get a 24x sized one over size it to fit in there. Just seems like at the back it won't fit right. But I'll have to try that size filter now. 😅 never thought to go that size before.
Thanks for this video. I know its years old but it helped.
Thank you so much for this video! I just changed my first filter successfully!
You’re welcome
Yessss! It only took me 4 hours to finally find a video that makes sense and looks similar to mine. Thank you!
You’re welcome
So true. Took me hours to find but soo happy i did
Finally! I found a video that fit the same unit I have to see how it goes.
Thank you so much! This is the only video I found that actually showed me where mine was hidden!! I have the exact same setup as you, side vent coming in & up but the old filter was installed upside down. I would of done the same thing so I really appreciate this!
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
Same for me as of today haha
Useful and enteraining, also spoken clearly, appreciate it
Thanks
Thank you for this!
You’re welcome.
He said unit 😏😏 I loved this video soooo much. Straight to the point, dudes comments were making me laugh, and you saved me 😩 my grandma hasn’t replaced her filter since I was born 20 years ago so I had to fix it😩😩
Thanks!
Thank you I needed to know which way the air flow arrow was intended to go
You’re welcome
Thank you for this video. I just help me to know which way the airflow arrow should go because I just changed my air condition filter. Thank you.

Great instruction!
+Xuelian Wang Thanks.
Love it man you said unit. Made my day.
Thanks
Thank you. Doing this today - thought the filter was behind the vent on the wall! Lol
You’re welcome
I did too! Hahahaha! I was so confused! LOL
It's good to know about the air flow arrows! I always got them confused! Thanks a bunch!! 👍😄👍

It's the air handler needing the filter. Sheesh no big deal but I watched Because I can never remember which way the arrow goes. So for all those acting like it's not perfect, this was perfect for my needs. Now to go put my filter back in I've added my vinegar for the month and I add some hot water (per my AC wonderful guys) and I'm a happy camper in Central Florida. Thank you much for this video. It really helped. And I've got to make some notations on my air handler to remember which direction is up ...don't laugh... it may seem like a small thing to you. For those of us that are not AC people this helps. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
You’re welcome!
I always wondered why the filters have to be bent. It bothers me because then it doesn't truly sit flush anymore. The side that gets bent is always slightly lifted so I looked it up to see if there a magic way but apparently not lol
Thank you !!
You’re welcome.
thank u so much !!
You’re welcome.
Thank you.....I had the arrow wrong😊😊😊😊😊
+Tanya Critten You're welcome.
I have a spilt system. Will I find my Filter is roughly the same place. I took the took part off and saw no filters. I did not see anything when I looked done either. The bottom panel has different pipes attached to it. The pipes appear a bit rigid to move.
Thank you 🙏🏼
You’re welcome
Ah finally! Someone with the same HVAC system as mine’s. Do I need to install a Filter Grille into that Vent that you’ve mentioned? Mine doesn’t have a filter holder and I’m wondering if I should install one since shining a light into there shows a big hole of dust. Thank you! 😁
I’m not sure, but that sounds like a good idea. You want something in there to hold the filter.
@@hoohoohoblin Awesome. Thank you so much for the response! Hope you continue to have a great week
Mine has to be bent to get in as well! Is there a filter in the vent on the side wall that needs to be changed, too?
Thank you soo much!!!
You’re welcome
this is a very good video but I have to ask : is there an opening under the the filter? Mine has that drum but the new air filter goes above it. I'm not sure if the arrow should face the drum (down) or if the arrow should face away from the drum (up) towards the big square opening
The arrow should face in the direction that the air flows. If you take the filter out and put your hand in to feel which way the air is blowing, have the air flowing in the same direction as the arrow.
Thankyou I just needed to make sure the arrow was pointing up. 👍
You're welcome.
Thank you so much
You’re welcome.
Thank yu very much ...

thanks!!
So people with HVAC we only replace the ones against the wall right? Because we don’t have inside AC system
Asking for a friend
I'm confused about this as well. We are renters subscribed to a filter delivery service as required by our lease. They keep sending us filters that are meant to be for the wall vent in front of the inside furnace unit. They would fit if it weren't for a small beam of wood stopping the top from fitting properly.
When we moved in there was a filter in the unit just like you showed in video. I'm confused as to where to place a filter now..
Thank you
You're welcome
What brand is your a/c unit? And how much tons? I'm thinking to get one exactly like that in the future if my old unit brakes down completely....it looks very manageable instead of having it in the attic I might have it installed in the garage or hallway...
I don’t know. We made this video a few years ago at my friends house, and he was renting.
I have an Amana ASPT. I can't remove these parts. I just had a Coil Cleaning. Now all items are sealed. What to do? I want to save My A/C longer. What do I do? Thank You.
Thanks!
You’re welcome
Lol the camera man cracked me up
Thanks
Besides the regular a/c filter that must b changed 30 to 60 days, is there another filter to replace not as often but that will interfere with the a/c function when it gets too dirty, and where would it be located?
+Nancy Cooper This was the only one on this model. Not sure how other systems work. I wonder if there is another filter outside of the house where the air comes in.
hoohoohoblin, okay....thanks alot for your response.
So helpful
Thanks
Also if the A/C unit is outside. Is there a place to replace air filters as well?
There is probably an outside filter to keep bugs and dust out. This wasn’t at my house, so I can’t go out and look.
What if you can't see it but when you reach under your unit you can feel it.
You didn't tell the folks to turn off the unit before starting!
Those "...thingies..." that are holding the filter in place are called 'filter retainers' that prevent the filter from 'floating' while the unit is operating. Floating filters are aggravating and useless because they make noise and do not filter the air when the unit is running.
The old filter was probably bent from being clogged from not being changed often enough. It looks like it is in an apartment of a smoker. If you are a smoker then I recommend changing the filter every 2 weeks. If you are a heavy smoker then once a week.

Thanks.
Came to the comments just to see if I needed to turn it off. Thanks!
@M DV. Thanks for mentioning to turn it off. I have seen your comments on a couple videos and wanted to ask you about turning it off. Mine looks like it is plugged into the wall like the one in this video. I don’t see a switch anywhere to turn the furnace off. Do I just unplug it before removing the panels? Also looks like we have a gas line with a valve. Do I need to turn the valve to an off position before opening the panel too? I am terrified of doing it wrong and breaking it or hurting myself. Thanks so much!
Also thank you to the poster who made this video. Ours looks similar. It is a Trane Electronic Ignition.
@@Spirokeeter There should be a maintenance switch close to the unit and an electric outlet to plug in tools needed to work in the area depending on the year it was installed but you just need to turn off the thermostat and it will be off. Turning off the gas is not necessary if you are only changing the filter.
@@mdv5845 thanks so much for your reply! I really appreciate your time and help! I just now saw your comment to me. So sorry for not replying sooner. That is great about not having to turn off the gas. I have looked and looked and couldn’t find a switch unless it is actually inside of the furnace under the panel. I have followed the cords coming from the unit and it looks like it is just plugged straight into the wall which I thought was strange. The one in this video looks like it is just plugged into the wall too. Will just unplugging it be okay?
Will this prevent the leaking I’ve been experiencing?
Thanks man! That video helped :)
You’re welcome
I write the date on the filter with a sharpie marker so I know how long it has been since I changed the filter
Great idea. Thanks.
My unit has a solid panel so how can I remove it to replace my air filter in my apartment?
+Tara Marks I don’t know. There has to be a way to get into it. Look for screws or something holding it together.
I replace my filter i have the same ac system you got, after i replace don't turn on no more
I rent didn't know that I needed to do this, thanks youtube
You’re welcome
Soooo metal grates go up? 😅
That is a furnace AKA Air handling unit. A/C unit is outside the house.
Thanks dad
You’re welcome
One thing to keep in mind, there are several different levels of filters you can buy. With the covid 19 situation what it's is, spend the extra money and buy the # 9 or #10 versions. Supposed to catch all the bad stuff. Stay safe people.
Thanks
Thank you ! Wonder if it helps w allergy season !
@@rickyymunozI saw another video that mentions if you get those then you should change the filter often because it gets dirty faster. Another comment mentioned that these filters are not meant to purify the air in your home (you'll need an air purifier for that) but just filter the air that goes into the system so it doesn't get messed up
I get mine at Wal-Mart, Thanks
You’re welcome.
Can i use washable filter
I don’t know if those exist. It’s possible you could take the old one out and shake the dust out of it, or vacuum, clean it.
Thankyou thankyou
You’re welcome
Thank you, my ac started blowing funky smelling air
You’re welcome
The video is helpful. The cameraman’s narration is highly annoying
Can you take the cardboard piece off thats surrounding the filter? Every time my AC comes on it makes a banging sound. It's getting irritating at this point
You probably could, or make some kind of cardboard spacer and put it in there to stop it from moving around.
Control de aire central
So do I need to turn the AC off in order to change it? I don't want to shock myself or anything! LOL
You don’t need to turn it off, but it’s probably easier if you do.

Panic, cry.. that hit too close to home.

Backseat commentary by Bevis
Who's the voice in the background? Video would've been easier to focus on what the main guy was saying and doing, rather than the unexpected narration that just kind of threw me off... Sorry, just used to videos with one person doing the talking. 🤷🏻♀️
Sorry about that. That was me. The guy fixing the air conditioner was having me as a guest on his podcast about making UA-cam videos, and so we decided to make a UA-cam video as well as a podcast. We didn’t expect many people to watch it, but it’s gotten 300,000 views already.
he said "unit" uhuhuhuhuhuhuhu
He said knobs HEEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH
+1marcelfilms Thanks! The cameraman watched too much Beavis and Butthead.

Have you heard of a flashlight to illuminate the area where you are working? If we can not see what you are doing, the video is worthless !!
