I'm new to the game but these type of games are right up my ally though being nearly 40 and growing up with Ultima Online, EverQuest etc. I totally get what you are saying about instant gratification with the younger folks.

Same here. I am a new player and have dived deep into the game, but I used to play Everquest, Eve online for many years and 1500 into WoW and WoW Classic.
Many great points. I do think the landscape of gaming is changing for the good as far as the player base. Ive seen osrs mentioned in a lot of videos latley. Even big wow players and what not talking about osrs Ironman being the only mmo that isn’t pay to play. People are getting tired of skins and battle passes,daily’s and timed content and osrs seems to be one of, if not the only game out today that reminds us why we loved gaming. I don’t see this game going anywhere for a very long time.

To expand the playerbase, I think Jagex should invest in servers in highly populated regions; like Brazil, Mexico, and South Asia. I think that would have a much bigger impact than any single content update.

@@jonchandler6767 those were the days. The Cows would Muh in German Lumby instead of moo. My 10 year old self thought it was the funniest thing ever. I would go to those foreign servers in their dead hours to have resources to myself. I thought no one else remembered these lol
low level raid with monsters that have similar strength to stronghold of security but with engaging mechanics to learn wold help a lot for onboarding new players imo

Alt accounts and bots aside the playerbase is still going extremely strong. More content being pushed than ever with a dev team 4 times bigger than say 3 years ago, cant imagine they'd be throwing that much at a game with no mtx and a "dying playerbase"..
people have been making these videos since 2008. ive been playing this game since 2004 myself. i think we got a good deal of years ahead of us this game cost almost nothing to maintain it doesnt have some giant studio behind it like a mega corp that cost billions to run and will kill it off etc
i started playing osrs about 6 months ago when I quit WoW after 13 years. I'm only 23 but its really refreshing to see a community so passionate about a game its the main reason I decided staick around and grind out a character.
i play both, but i like osrs because their is no real limits on what you can do and how you can go about lvling your toon or getting in game gp from from pvm to pvp.
In wow i hated the restriction on getting gear for for pvp oh i have to wait 2 weeks for new season, or i can only get this amount of conquest points for this week.
Made an account at the start of lockdown and never had members prior to that so its been really enjoyful and fulfilling learning all of themembers content, now 2200 total and hoping to max this year and work on log slots after that. Managed to remember the logins for my first ever account I made in 07 so making it an alt to dolo bosses and getting a 99 on that account to fulfil younger me's goal on my OG account. Found a good clan and a couple of mates are still playing. One of the only games I enjoy playing at the moment. So much variety, engaging content and stuff you can afk if you're busy there's no other game like it.
Having started an ironman about 6 months ago as my first account ever, the thing that kept me around was the mechanical diversity. The diversity is in large part due to the high number of bugs that were kept around instead of being patched out, niche mechanics for those with the interest to seek them out. Prayer flicking, combat switching, tick manipulation, hell even opening clues on Entrana to focus farm non-combat items. This richness is something that exists in older games that were released before hotfixing was common, from indie games, and attentive studios, something that seems to be rather rare as of late.
None of those things you mention are bugs... Just quirks of the game engine's tick system.
i started playing sometime about 3-4 months ago and i never played rs before. Thanks to you i got my 2 weeks old ironman acc and im playing only on it rn. So im proof that once in a while someone new is found.

the easiest thing jagex could do is unlock more member content for f2p. F2p will most likely go to p2p once in their playtime. But there's such a gap between f2p to p2p that if that new member players get overwhelmed. There's nothing wrong with giving f2p more members content if it creates loyality.
there's so much dead content that members don't use that f2p would go crazy over.

I've seen a bunch of new accounts in our clan. It is pretty crazy how many new players we've been seeing. I've given plenty of escorts to varrock, these past couple of weeks. Makes my heart swell up!
I lost my childhood acc, jagex deleted it. I have 2 acc going now. My main is mem doing his thing, and I have my Pking alt acc. So I guess 3 acc in total made in my lifetime! Love the content!

@@NoHelpOSRS i think it is it’s just rare. and not on the scale it could be. for example my brother and i started in 2020 and literally no other person i have met online started when osrs came out. everyone seems to just be legacy players of 15+ years
bots only account for 2-8% of population online (around 3.000-12.500 bots). (think mod sween said this)
OSRS is not dying. Active playerbase is estimated to be up 50% over the last 5 years, discounting bots...

@@Phadex7 Yup. Typed out a long comment about why I was unsubscribing because his content recently has been pretty poor overall with no thought, and critiqued a few of his points in his video. I tried to be fairly respectful about it, although I did point out that people shouldn't be profiting off making content with a lack of intelligence behind it.
Last year I got back into it. being a veteran who started in 02 with old old school classic osrs. Spent 3 months hard grinding even having a iPad train skills at work. Spent about 1000$ total & got 2 accounts to 100 for bossing… then the grind caught up & I stopped playing. Time 😭😭😭

As a newly returning player from the old days this game has something special. I do think we will start to see a resurgence of players as the dev team continues to update it. Mostly people from back in the day looking for something more mellow then the current games coming out today. I look forward to seeing what happens. :) stay fresh!

I had started this game 10 months ago. Before that I played the f2p version a little bit but that was all. I would like to make a review what I experience through 10 months.
Lots of Reading
When I first started the member version of the game I had such a small knowledge of the items and etc. First few months figured out the wiki of the game and started to read all of the wiki while afking. Most of the people don't like to read hundreds of lines to learn how the mechanics works etc. I think this is a major setback. Jagex can implement a popup screen to show the details of the item in game.
*Slow Progression*
At first the progression was fast. All the quests offer high experience and lots of content to do. After you get your quest cape and around base 70-80ths, your progression almost stops. Since you don't have lot of money to spend on different builds you are forced to do 1-2 bosses to get more money or forced to do recurring and most of the time boring skilling methods to get rid of mid game. There should be more mid game bosses like gauntlet with the reward of maybe untreatable mid level items to get you high level content.
*No clear way to play the game*
I understand that you can play the game however you would like to play such as skiller, pvemer, pker etc but most other games suggest you an activity when you stuck at some point with small incentives. Such thinks can be implemented into the game for example get 1000 law rune to get 1 activity point, do x times woodcutting and get y amount of activity point and do 5 slayer quest for z activity point etc and those point can be traded with simple stuff, even untreatable cosmetics can be rewarded as well. This will keep bored player base busy.
*Advanced Players*
I don't know how this can be changed but advanced players are a problem for new players. For example when you play an lms game you need to constantly do 3-4 actions per game tick, for new player this is impossible. I don't even talking about the players who play the game in a windowed small screen size. Dyeing over and over again is not that fun. Game should implement a mechanic to teach newcomers how tick manipulation works, how gear switching works, which gear is used for offense and what gear is for defence etc.
Also for example think about your first fire cape. It was not easy task to do and you struggled because of the mechanics of the game. However when you fight with zulrah, cg etc you learn the mechanics of the prayer switching, tick manipulating etc and then getting your next fire cape is not as hard as the first one. This is because these mechanics are not introduced in the early game. I mean that when you advance in game all the old stuff that you do is become easy. Why the game does not introduce these mechanics on the early stage?
As a supporting point this topic I can say that there is no information in the game that describe how tick manipulation works and how you can use it.
Over all this is a great game to play but the games itself is not very helpful for newcomers.
You said it correctly, the current age is the reason why not just RuneScape, but all MMOs are dying.
As the true player base gets older and starts to quit playing, it is no longer replaced with the younger generation as it was before.
This upcoming generation has a very small attention span, and it shows in the way UA-cam has changed, and basically everything else. Years ago, remember when the meta was getting your video up to 10 minutes? Now you get more recommendations if you make shorts.
I think most games in general, will slowly die out. In the next 10 years, the video game meta will be fast paced games such as Call of Duty and Apex Legends.

There are over 100m League of Legends Players too, where you have to Focus and Play alot for Rankeds too.. Cant really only blame it on the Attention Problems.. Idk
For me, I returned after about 14 years to relive my childhood. The economy is dead, making decent money is extremely hard outside killing bosses. I got to the point where I unlocked and equipped a dragon scimitar, and it hit me, I am getting no sense of achievement, I quit on the spot. It felt like a small step forwards, rather than a huge milestone. Skilling is too easy these days, gear so cheap. The whole game was about hitting milestones, but now it's just something you do on a second screen while watching UA-cam.
The whip might be that jump you are looking for! Otherwise, a quest cape or fire cape are good goals (for me at least).
Regular Accounts are boring after a while unless you just enjoy PVM, Ironman is the Go-to Nowdays. Nothing feels more as an Archivement

This video doesn't hold up to the actual metrics. There's only 2 mmos that have consistantly grown or maintained their player base over time have been ff14 and OSRS. There are actually a ton of new players to osrs and statistically only 9% of the playerbase are bots.
One thing they can do is make extra xp worlds where ur on the same account but a new character kinda like the new pvp arena so people can get instant gratification an also there could be rewards in the new world that can transfer over to ur main account if u wanted kinda how rs3 can transfer gold but if they did not want to they could stay in the boosted xp worlds
There are really just two things I think Jagex needs to attract new players who aren't just returning players
1) offer an actual HD toggle to the game which also improves animation quality.
Make the game's art style look as crisp as their wilderness boss rework trailer
2) Improve the new player experience
Double down on the Adventure Paths. Make an in-game codex for items, monsters, and NPCs. Introduce the actual mechanics of the game in a natural way, like how true tile movement works or the tick system in general. Introduce more accessible PvM like Scurrius and ToA. At least make some low level content that focuses on individual mechanics.
I didn't make it past 1:30, so there might be some redeeming points made later on. However, I'm not going to wait around knowing that the main thesis of the video is based off wild speculation. We don't know how many people are logging into multiple accounts at once. Personally, I'm guessing that it's a minority of players.
Plus, if we do make the assumption that the player base isn't growing, that might not necessarily be a huge issue. In an interview with Mod Matt K, he mentioned that the OSRS player base is highly dedicated. As in, in the history of OSRS only two games released that impacted player count negatively, Pokemon Go and Fallout 4. People aren't leaving to play the Elden Ring's of the world in meaningful numbers.

As a veteran who started playing in 2004 and has gone through it all, it is a fact that people simply just grow up.
I'm 30 years old and for most of us, clicking on a computer screen isn't that fun anymore.
It's just a grind to keep us busy, while we waste time as everything and everyone leave us behind. It will have a place in my heart, but nobody got time to play if u aren't getting paid for it.

Osrs has something that no other game has - being able to play casually or tryhard. It has immense depth.
Other casual games are p2w.
More engaging games take up too much time and people grow up - don't have that time anymore. Not to mention that most todays games are rage - inducing.
I love osrs because I can play while doing something else or, when I have time, really sweat some skill/boss/minigame.
The ONLY bad things I can say about osrs (why I play iron) are bots and that you can grind one boss and it will be better than anything else in game money-wise.

Playing since 2002, between me and my siblings we must've made like 30+ accounts easily back in the day before the wilderness crater and all, most being pvp related pures and stuff, but all of us have since made multiple accounts on osrs too, Between the 4 of us and it wouldn't be a stretch to say we made like 10 each over the many years, OSRS has definitely continued to breathe life into the franchise though like I wouldn't call OSRS dead just yet, being realistic it's actually held up pretty well, they gotta somehow feed more content into the game but also please the community and keep the "oldschool vibe" it's an impossible task to fulfill but somehow they've actually done a pretty good job with it so far

Runescape mobile was a good move for trying to get new players. It's the only thing that got me back after 10 years away but the nostalgia is still a factor for me.
What data do you have that indicates the games dying? I’m sure Jagex is tracking whether or not the game is increasing in its user base or declining.

A few people I know refused to play runescape because they didn't want to spend irl money for membership, go through getting a bond as f2p as a new player, and the amount of time it took to max out

I played a little in 06 but not really. I started an osrs account 2 years ago and only play 1 acct. Love it I learn so much and being an ironman forces me to explore
Started playing last year and I didn't even play it as a kid. I'm almost 30 tho so it's def because you have to earn lvls and earn a lot of the gear. Yeah you can rwt and buy all the good gear but it's expensive and you won't be able to use half of it without hours of grinding, and that's why I love it. Cause I'll outgrind all those full obby n00bs

I made one account back when the osrs was still fairly new , not knowing anything about the game my stupid self followed some jerk into the wildy and got killed. Never played again until I made a new acc in 2018 and have been off and on since😅. I love the game, the grind is catching up fast and I’ve burned out a few times already. I am excited to see the new changes coming later this year. And I don’t see the game dying out anytime soon, jagex still seems pretty dedicated to keeping osrs going.
i just made a ironman not long ago. did the non member quests. couple members quests. at 71 agility right now with rooftop, prolly gunna go for 90, maybe 99 idk. but thats be a lot of agility coins lol
I've got I think 4 accounts maybe 5 but I only remember my original I made in 2004 that got hacked. My current main I made that same year a mule account and a hardcore ironman. Really only playing my main right now but sometimes I'll play 2 accounts.

I actually just started playing OSRS a month or so ago, got my first 99 last week. I unlike most people came for the grind though. As a ex-WOW achievement junkie the collection log appeals to me and I inevitably came to OSRS because I am a very anti-social person and WOW absolutely requires discord interaction ect. where OSRS although very difficult is soloable in every regard. Also I like numbers going up and being rewarded for hard work not swiping for gear or being spoond everything.
you got a 99 in a month? which one and how lol. and yeah I tried to get into wow when they got rereleased and it was impossible for me to play at all because it seemed like everyone already had friends of 8 years. legit impossible.

After playing rs for 15 Years and starting WoW for the first time i was a bit disappointed since the game feels rather casual, unless you do hunt archivements and those kinds. But esp. Raid and M+ was rather simple to get into and doesnt feel the "grind". Stopped after a few months. Most people i met there were also alot older and swiping for everything.
@@guusgeluk3693 played a normal account for about a week and just saw that the way I play I would of ended up grinding for gp to buy gear instead of grinding for the gear itself. Also as someone finding collection logs and clues most appealing I couldn't have it so I could be lazy and just fill them out via GE without actually experiencing the content, because I totally would of died once and then never go back to the content if i could just buy everything from it with gp.

Pretty much made 2 accounts total, the other one was to solely provide bonds playing RS3 (at least that was the goal). I was trying to build that account but the pandemic hit and I can't play RS3 on a slow phone. Now looking at bond prices at that game I was like "Hell no!", and now I'm slowly working on maxing on my main.

I think Runescape should be advertising itself as an open MMO and you play your way.
I play one day doing top tier content and then the next I'm afking a boss for a pet or even making videos.
No other game has the amount of different play styles.
They need to advertise a lot more.

I play on 3 accounts at once one that just kills rune drags my max main thst mostly kills rune drags to and my ironman but my other 2 are just for bonds and that's it right now until I go back for collection log maybe on main

I come back to Runescape every once in awhile, though the game that I fell in love with no longer exists, they called it Runescape Classic when they released Runescape 2 and it was really great they kept it around. Then they locked it behind membership and even then didn't get enough people playing I guess because they shut it down for good. I've probably made at least 100 accounts over the years. I kind of did it like pokemon back in the day, I would make a new character, I would do all the quests (I was a lifetime f2p person for the most part) then I would get all the best gear, have some fun doing some skilling stuff like mining and smithing and fishing. Then get bored, take a break for a week or two and then make a new character and start all over again.
If I had to guess, on f2p worlds 90% of the population is just bots. Granted the game has always had bots, even back during the original santa hat drops and stuff when I started playing people were talking about bots ruining the game. But between bots and real world gold trading the whole thing has really taken over the game.
I grew up with SNES and PS1 but never played OSRS. I tried it for the first time shortly before when Leagues 3 came out and really enjoyed my Time especially because it is so chill.
I like this Game alot and there is only 1 thing i dislike but thats for a Personal Reason which is Money. Due to Mental Health Problems i can always afford a Membership and F2P after being a Member just sucks tbh. Even tho i really like this Game and i wish more People would give it a go espacially because its F2P for the first 40-50 hours.

Is OS actually dying? It makes up the majority of Jagex revenue in the last 3 financial reports. (Amounts are in £)
2018: OSRS 45m, RS3 47m
2019: OSRS 65m, RS3 43m
2020: OSRS 68.9m, RS3 50.7m
2021: OSRS 64.1m, RS3 60.8m
And that’s just revenue, the profit is surely an even greater disparity considering OS has a much smaller dev team than RS3 and uses cheaper hardware and software. And OS has done this purely through bonds and subscriptions, whereas RS3 has huge amounts of MTX to rely on.
Certain aspects of the game, however, are dying, yes. Most notably PVP. But the game is going to be here for a long time, we’ve already passed the 10 year anniversary.

Is it in that much of a decline in player base? I don't get involved with others, I'm not in a clan and I don't talk in game. The only way I keep up to date is I just watch UA-cam videos on developments and new content. I'm almost 40 now, never played it 1st time around, I started around 4 years ago because of a friend I saw playing it. He's the only person I know who plays it and I think he's stopped now too. Hope they keep this game going I enjoy the grind 🤘
I wish they would make new cities and make the wilderness way bigger. Would be so cool, and new cites like varrock .. falador, etc. but just different names would make the game more fun

I joined in 2018 right before mobile's release (i didn't even know about mobile at the time). I joined after watching content creators. I never played it prior, and I'm 20.

As an old player from the golden age, They need to fix their fucking botting/RWTing and economy problems. They’ve barely lifted a finger over them for 20 years and it makes it so that all your shit eventually becomes worthless, thats why people wanna play an MMO without the MMO part and call it a “ironman”. Also letting players vote for content updates threw the game to the dogs, most people can’t think about how something will affect the health of a game, and now we have a bunch of shit that powercreeps your old gear. They make it hard to shoot down an idea due to vote requirements to pass or fail one, basically if theres an update it will probably get passed whether it should or not (and lets not even begin to think about bots and RWTers voting in their interests too). I could write an essay about how 95% of the shit they have done since 07 were horrible ideas, but ultimately thats the gist of it.
I would want to see a maxed server, where all players have maxed stats. I've tried convincing friends to play the game for years, they eventually played it for a few days, but, they quickly realize that it'll be years until they are able to have fun bossing, or fighting other players. It's hard to get passed graphics, but some can manage, boring tasks, okay, but when they realize that they literally can't do anything fun, anything that everyone else is doing for years, they just stop playing the game. That's how it is for everyone, not even dedicated fans can get their best friends to play the game, that's how bad the grind is. I know people that have played old school runescape since it's release, they still aren't even close to maxed stats, they still can't raid. I don't know, I think a server where everyone is maxed and maybe have certain untradeable or something could be cool, and then the focus would just be on getting high tier loot from bossing, and also lots of player fighting. I don't know, there would probably be issues with the servers economy, the current player base on existing old school runescape servers would complain about a community split, and Jagex honestly, still has shell shock from EOC, they finally found a comfort zone when they recovered with old school runescape, so I don't really see them taking a risk, any risk.

You would still need to learn Mechanics and Movement, even if you Account is maxed. Absolute tragic to see People like this try easy Stuff like CoX and be like oh no i have to dodge this or that on Olm, too hard. Your better off Playing GW2 or WoW then
I came across runescape when i was at primary education. and now Im nearly hitting 30s. Each time I get back I always create a new account and therefore i never progressed very far lol. I love the style of the game and the graphics is generic. super classic TBH. so i got back again recently. subscribed a year membership and i have 92 firemaking from winterT. o yas. osrs will never die. it will be blessed with players who truly loves this game
I came back awhile ago to live my nostalgic days again, I did and most of what I wanted to do was achieved. For the most part I wanted to achieve a skillcape, I got the mining cape and after that I played through and leveled most things fairly high. After a time though I just stopped because their wasn't much more to bind me to the game, so many other better games came out and I had to drop the membership. Not to say it's a bad game but it's a confused game at times.
There is also the fact that the game has changed in ways I don't like, such as the inclusion of a pride event that should have been voted on but was pushed through as integrity changes. The focus on PvP which a very small playerbase cares about and making it so the majority of players can't stem the flow of the powercrept they could potentially get is far easier for them to achieve. That leads to the rich getting richer and those who already hate PvP avoiding the wilderness even more and the devs having to make incentives for the PvP braindead to risk their progression to be food for the wolves. I just don't think they've made a lot of good changes recently, if they want PvP focused content then make content where they can fight each other and change the wilderness to opt in PvP then everybody wins.

I disagree. I think osrs has a lot of growth potential. Especially with the app, as well as the wiki. It definitely won't be as popular as a lot of other games, but will serve a niche market and serve it well.

I’m not the biggest fan of TikTok. But I’m not blaming TikTok for osrs dullness. They’ve made alot of improvements but there’s still some horrendous grinds in this game. It really sucks that they’re all at the beginning. Pest Control, Graceful, Fighter Torso, Woodcutting.
im one of the mid / early 30's players who came back to OSRS when they came out with mobile... used to Play Classic... if that dates me lol... even remember I had a santa hat when it was super rare and cost 5m. when 5m was a ton of money lol.. i have 2 accounts currently and have made 5 in my lifetime. 3 were from classic days
I've made like.... 6 maybe 7... mostly because long breaks and being unable to recover. and recently starting a GIM with my friends, and fiance (who has never played before)

OSRS has been hitting top MMO lists the last two years. Most MMOs have people with multiple accounts. A mod estimated the bots are about 10% of the player count.

Luv osrs and I suck at it but it's very chill laid back. My accounts are my rs3(2002), main in osrs, a str pure, a defence dfs pure they still rock today and Kergin a make belief friend So I could beat Hero's Quest and Shield of Aarav.

I started playing RS back in 2004, and quit in 2006, then came back for OSRS. I actually liked the game better the way it was back in 04. I got millions of gp from chopping yews south of falador on f2p, and sold them at the varrock bank. I would trade rune (g) armor for h'ween masks/santa hats + cash back and forth until i had all the masks and a santa hat. sadly, i only kept a blue mask. i miss going behind the bank where 100 guys were selling and buying stuff. it made the game feel so much more alive. PvM was never my thing, but today you kinda feel like you have to do it, because items are so damn expensive and skilling makes so little money. I played RS for the laidback gameplay, but as the game becomes more and more intensive, i start to dislike it. Even my beloved woodcutting is getting an overhaul now. Grinding out levels also takes too much time after 70, and i don't have time for that with a wife, baby and work. Great game, loved it, but everything has to come to an end.

Every game will die eventually, that doesn't necessarily mean osrs is dying currently. The game is very active currently, lots of good content
There was just an interview for the amount of bots and jagex said it was from 1-9% and they have a new bot detection thing coming soon

There was a video that somebody made a couple days where he interviewed a JMod and he basically answered everything you went over this video. I'd recommend you watch it. OSRS is doing well. Less than 10% of players are bots.

I played runescape when runescape was like osrs in 2006. And now I am litterly quiting because of you can't reset defence xp in osrs. And yes I can make new account but I am not a kid who have time like 2010. I have job etc now.
I feel like OSRS will be okay and will get jumps in players time to time with some who stay afterwards and others return later on
I've made 4 accounts. 2 for shits and giggles, however my main was banned when I was a middle schooler because I'd been using an obvious script for like a week like a silly little kid. I then returned about 3 years ago (as a father, fully employed and full time student) & I'm at over 2k total level now. I'll never stop even if it means 3 more years til max!
I have 22 osrs accounts. And 7 rs3 accounts. All made since 2019. There are probably 3-4 floating around from when I was a kid lol

Here is the thing though... look at every other MMO. Runescape holding a steady playerbase or even rising slightly (which we are) is not the norm. FFXIV and OSRS are kinda the only outliers in this sense. Every other MMO has a steadily declining playerbase after a huge uptick

For me osrs is too grindy for one. Pre eoc was my fav where the xp rates were faster. Also i tried toa but the puzzles just kill it for me i don't think they fit in raids but other ppl may disagree. I also think it's stupid how you can buy the best gear without actually doing the content which is not a thing in other mmos. The graphics is a good point for me it was never a problem but i can definitely see many people avoiding it for that reason.

after a ton of attempts at playing the game over the past 10+ years i finally got into OSRS a few weeks ago and just playing F2P and learning everything that this game has to offer has been some of the best fun i've had in a game in years!
i see players in the osrs discord that are new all the time come into voice etc youd be shocked on how much players are coming in but alot od see things like cox and tob and say i wanna do that and they quit lol
