- My DCI filters seemed to be rapidly degrading causing a red powder like substance to line my car's intake tract as well as the engine bay. Not good, and I'm glad I reverted back to stock.

I have an upgraded intercooler and charge pipe, the stock air box and k&n air filter inside. I love the combo.
I have The BMS cones and never had a problem!
They use cheap filters/design

I’m running my stick air box with a K&N filter, no Tune catless down pipes. It’s not my daily driver just a road-Trip vehicle. It’s going to receive a coil upgrade soon. Oh if I do my part this 335 I can get 36 mph. I enjoy your channel!!!!
The oem box with a drop in filter is way better the any DCI so you made the right choice my name for DCI or short ram intakes is hot air intakes, I bet if you check your AIT in your logs you will see you made the right choice

I use the AFE stage 2. Its an enclosed unit and never had the problem of it degrading like those. Your car looks great and awesome vids man.

The plumbing going from the turbo to the filter is what will make a decent difference but what a PITA to install , maybe look into that my friend

AS a Mechanic I have to say. ALL filters degrade over time.If you installed these paper filters and expected them to last the life of the vehicle you were mistaken. If you had run the K&N oil type cones they would last much longer but they too still degrade. Also DCI's don't do anything for performance/ HP they just make the engine sound cool.
I run the AFE on my 135i & though expensive well worth the money! Especially when anyone is running full bolt ons & then some with. a custom tune from Wedge Performance like i am. Intakes make a big difference even if you have mild mods done. The AFE's say you gain 27-30 H.P. depending on mods & I've been into cars for 30+ yrs & i don't doubt it at all! They dyno tune their stuff that's why there $450 for the intake. But i like it & you can here my turbos big time!

It's great you went back to the stock airbox. You're right, you wouldn't feel a difference with stock box vs dci...except for that nice wooshing sound the dcis make 😁

If you clean the carbon build up every 30.000 miles you would feel the difference in a cai. Carbon filled valves and ports disrupt that flow of air that makes all the difference.
Have you ever looked at bmw n54 mr5 style intake? I’m going to take this route
That red dust is actually BMW Herpes and now your valves and cylinders will have outbreaks. It's harder to tell on the cylinder walls but the pistons usually are easier to notice it and get treatment. Don't work on your car when it's having a flare up as you can spread it that way. BTW, I'm not mechanic, just heard this and want everyone to be safe.
I have been running burger-motor sports DCI’s on my n54 for over 2 years and not a trace of dirt or contaminants has ever been found from within the intake tubing, I do however clean and oil them up agin every 5 thousand miles. Maybe that’s why you had that problem?
black reflectors really make the car look that much better. i just bought some oem ones and had them painted bmw black sapphire
Just curious, I know you dont have this car anymore, but for stage 2, for the 335i for California, what do you recommend since we can't do "downpipes"?
@Smart asian Hacker How can you do downpipes. California is the only state where if you get downpipes you wont pass smog?

First off love your channel bro, its helped me w/ decision making a lot! Where did you get the rims I love them im trying to buy ones that are that spoked!!! This video makes me sad though because I just spent $120 on BMS intakes and now im scared to put them in and don't wanna go through a whole 1-2 week process of a return. I'll prob just put them on, if anyone thinks I shouldn't and return them reply to this please!!! Overall I am looking for a better looking engine-bay, hopefully my BMS ones don't chip like that or cause any problems :/ My pops is hating on me for getting them in the first place saying there just going to suck in hot air anyways :/, its my first mod to the car, have a 2009 335i 4-door w/ 100,000 on it. Everything thats know to be a problem just got replaced, index 12's injectors brand new, water pump brand new, and high pressure fuel pump brand new just need to walnut blast her. BMS intakes are much better, they use S&B filters which don't chip and break off like these did. I got my wheels off of ebay a long time ago haha, they were cheap but worked great for show

If you buy quality DCI’s you won’t have any issues. I have BMS and haven’t had any issues.

I have bms dci and i just checked mine and mine still look good and holding up. I think bms dci might be a better instead of the ones u have. I have had mine on for about 3 months. So maybe by a years time it will get bad but i think it will hold up. By the way let me know about if u want to swap ur muffler delete for my stock exhaust. Thanks man

DCI 's may improve airflow but they look like a half finished project...they spoil the look of the engine bay...K & N filter in stock box..charge pipe and tune...try it you'll like it....

@5:31 when I pull off the breather valve in between the snorkel and oil housing, I have zero suction noise like I used to even after a drive. Could this be what’s causing my 30ff?
I believe BMS and SSR is the same price but BMS uses oil based filters and they last forever. I’m going MMP inlets tho 🤷🏻♂️

You need relocation its feeding hot air u can see why the OEMs ones are in a box design
Stock box is designed for noise reduction. The hot air thing is with naturally aspirated motors. That's why turbo cars air passes through a intercooler. So hot air soak on turbo cars is not a concern.

Yeah dude... you can't expect good quality if you don't pay. I had K&N filter the entire 5 yrs and they NEVER degraded. Always use the cleaner spray and apply oil as needed. Never buy the dry filters as they degrade over time due to the lack of oil conditioners.

I just replaced my worn out stock motor mounts with Revshift 80A motor mounts, and replaced my AFE cold air intake, replaced my stock plastic vacuum canisters from Stett Performance, BOV Adapter for Vader Solutions and clamped all hoses tightly so that zero leaks are happening... My car sounds completely different...like a very angry beast and it literally feels like a different car.
I don't know how much I gained...but all that power is now instantly and completely used on the rear wheels instead of getting lost in the soft broken mounts. The car is scary to drive now. I highly recommend these things.
Intakes really don't add much performance at all, not really worth it IMHO. By the way awesome vids on all the DIY repair stuff. It seems like with these cars it's really hit or miss as some people seem to have no problems while others seem to have issues.
i'm gonna go with USER ERROR here....those are the V1 filters you have and are the DRYLESS type...meaning NO OIL is supposed to be used!...just wash and let dry and re-install...the reason yours degraded is because you probably washed then oiled them.....i have the V2 upgraded filters with 6 layer cotton filters provide for even better flow, filtration and sound and have NO issues like you had.

Simply Car Things I feel ya, yeah it’s super hot this summer so I took out my ssr’s aswell. Went back to stock airbox with drop ins. My exhaust is vrsf dp, and muffler delete. My stock e90 resonator keeps all the rasp away along with a good bit of volume. Interior is super refined now. My last setup that I ran for 2 years were open turndown dumps after the oem downpipes lol. It was fun

There’s way too much heat in the engine bay,that’s most probably the reason why. Plus,it’s feeding the engine hot air which is the opposite of what you want for any engine.
That's why turbo cars have intercooler.

The stock airbox is terrible.
Finally a video that really enlightened the use of aftermarket cold air intakes.. with that heat on top of engine I don't think it's a good idea to put in something that wasn't tested for a long time.. the stock air intake is the best one.. don't get duped by those claims..
No it isn't. The stock airbox is terrible. There's like a 1 inch gap the air has to pass through. When modded DCI is better. Doesnt matter on a turbo car thats what the intercooler is for.

yo man i know SSR is a very well known company in the tuner community but if you go on bimmerpost, you'll hear stories of guys getting their warranties voided after using SSR intakes because they're not a true quality air filter. your warranty has probably been long expired but i wouldn't use anything that BMW says doesn't meet the standard especially for tuned cars that need quality performance parts such as the N54 and N55 engines

Not on turbo cars. Charge pipe monitors through sensor and the air is cooled when entering intercooler. They are safe
Let me just say this.. rebranding the same cheap filters dont change the composition of materials.. They are literally made in the same factories in China.

My engine light turned on the other day and then turned off after few hours and then same thing today. I have a 2011 323i

Code: P0015 B Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded Bank 1
Possible causes
- Faulty VANOS solenoid
- Faulty Camshaft position Sensor
- Mechanical timing condition
No misfires
No rough idle
Where should I start?
P Dros hmm, i’m not sure. Maybe try cleaning out the vanos solenoids first and see if that fixes it

If you keep the inlets, just measure the old filters, and buy an exact same sized k&n filter. That's what I am going to do. I do trust oiled k&n filters.
