A-Ha - Take On Me. Instrumental synth cover

  • This is my version of an 80s classic: Take On Me by A-Ha. Another of my absolute favourites from the era.
    I recreated this track by ear using a variety of VST instruments, including Native Instruments FM8 (an FM synthesizer like the Yamaha DX7 available at the time) and Steinberg's Retrologue 2.
    I used several layers to create the lead sound (about 9 in total).
    If you enjoyed this, you might want to check out my 80's cover collection here:

    • @juliancroot

      I usually only start recording video footage when the tracks are nearing completion. So most of what you see is me playing along to what I've already recorded :).
      However, sometimes I film some 'behind the scenes' footage as I'm producing (for educational purposes) and bits of that sometimes make the cut.

    • @juliancroot
      @juliancroot  2 місяці тому

      @@fabiomarcondes8681 it's not a single synth. If you look closely at the screen recordings from my Cubase project, you'll see about 6 tracks in yellow playing the lead synth line.
      I build my sounds by layering multiple parts together and processing as group track. So I'm afraid there isn't a simple answer.
      All I can tell you is I started with the sound of a steel drum, and then added synth brass layers to thicken it and make it punch more.

      At the time I decided it needed a bit more substance in my mix and so I did use it but added something with it. Maybe I'd do something a bit different if I was to do it again, but there isn't a single track on my channel I don't want to change something on... And so I just do what feels best at the time and live with it.
      Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I get it wrong, but at some point I have to stop tweaking or things never get finished.

    Great cover version. The difficult synth sounds are nailed. Do you have a process for synth sound design, or is it largely trial and error?

    • @juliancroot
      @juliancroot  Рік тому +2

      That's a great question 😁. Is there a process? I'd like to pretend everything is planned, but the reality is I doubt myself every time I take on a new challenge.
      Things just evolve slowly.
      I do try to listen for characteristics I recognise, then add layers to the sound until it's good enough.
      For example, the lead synth in this I felt had a bit of a steel drum character, so I started with that and then added some synth brass elements and worked on the blend until it started to take shape.

      Lol...I just work things out by ear so I'm fully aware there WILL be minor inconsistencies in all my covers, and I'm usually aware of it once uploaded. The trick for me is accepting that art is never finished... It's just abandoned.
      I could tweak it forever.
      I just try to make them as accurate as is reasonably possible in a reasonable time.
      I think it's the chord inversions that maybe a little different... So as Eric Morecambe once famously said 'I'm playing all the right notes.... Just not necessarily in the right order'.

    Dear brother, this is the best version of what I heard, you are cool, amazing collection of sounds, keep it up dear brother, long live the real Italo disco and please beware of those who spoil the real music Italo disco, so destructive to listen to their moans and barking dogs are really disgusting, for example, crime rap and hip-hop, the name Crips and Bloods
