- Alan Menken's music for Disney movies has won him eight Academy Awards, more than any one alive. Correspondent Martha Teichner discusses the composer's work for movies and theater, including an excerpt of the upcoming Broadway musical "Leap of Faith."
How ironic. He considers Hunchback to be his best work (and I completely agree) and yet that was one of the only Renaissance films he didn't win any Oscars for. What a snub.
The Cinema Cynic The Hunchback is a really uneven movie, some parts are too dark, and then there is some weird comic relief from the gargoyles (!), some song sequences are very artistic, while others are too generic. The movie feels like it needed more production time to really be a masterpiece. Maybe when they release the Broadway version an then the live remake, it would be perfect.
It lost to Emma (1996 theatrical film) for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Emma (1996 theatrical film) has great music score than The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Academy voters has the opinion and so do I because I never disagreed with the Oscars.
Music for Hunchback and Pocahontas are very, very underrated.
I so need to watch Hunchback then. Thank you for the movie inspiration.

He definitely should have won another 2 Oscars for Hunchback, which is arguably his strongest score overrall. "Out There" should have got an Oscar for best song, although every song he wrote for that score would have been a deserving winner! He is a genius, as was the late Howard Ashman.

Alan Menken essentially wrote the score to my childhood. The Hunchback of Notre Dame remains one of my all-time favorite animated movies, in large part due to a score that shook me to my core and continues to resonate.
I swear this man makes my life so much more colourful. ALL my favourite Disney tunes involved him. Menken's tunes always end up being so memorable.

YES! I came here after giving a short lecture to my mom about the brilliance of "The Bells of Notre Dame", because I wanted to find out more about the man who composed score to the Hunchback of Notre Dame after listening to my all time favourite piece "The Bells of Notre Dame", only to find that he was the same person who composed many of my Disney favourites!
SO HAPPY that he too, thinks that the Hunchback of Notre Dame was his best. I still remember the first time I heard the intro to the movie. It gave me the chills. After revisiting this many years later and having studied music, I have only come to love it more and more.
This man is the real star of the Disney Renaissance.

Alan is a genius. As a playwright currently working her way through college, it would be a dream come true if I got to work with him. Even to just shake his hand and thank him for all the wonderful music and childhood memories would be an honor. You're awesome, Alan! Keep up the amazing work.
All composers should receive recognition. What would add to a live production? A live orchestra, at the academy, composer to receive award, and a live performance of the music prior to presenters giving winning composer the award.
That's when Disney was in it's prime. Damn! I miss the Disney Renaissance. If I could just go back! If I could revisit the mid 80's through the late 90's, I would do it in a heartbeat with a full suitcase!
If the '90's animators and composers had that attitude, we never would've gotten the Disney Renaissance. If Walt Disney's had that attitude to what was good in the past, we NEVER would've had the Golden Age of Animation.

I'm so happy to see so much love shown to _The Hunchback of Notre Dame_ in the comments. It truly is his best score to date. And it's been my favourite Disney score since 1997. The stage musical adaptation only added to it for me. Songs like "Flight into Egypt" and "Made of Stone" give me chills, as does "Someday". Simply incredible.
I wish I could shake this man's hand and thank him for defining part of my childhood.

Everyone keeps mentioning Hunchback, and I agree. The movie is great, but his score for the stage production is honestly one of the most powerful I've heard. Every moment has that spiritual uplifting from the cathedral choir. Breathtaking in every way.

No Oscar for 25 years!!!!!!! Despite music from - Hunchback, Hercules, Tangled and the new powerhouse song from Aladdin 'Speechless' Maybe the Oscars thought he'd won enough (8 in 5 years) but I say it's about time he got another.
I can't believe his music for Tangled didn't win an Oscar, but Randy Newman's stupid Toy 3 music did... "I see the light" was phenominal.

I don't know how the academy makes there decisions along with the voters, I feel as if that the lion king, beauty and the beast and Aladdin have the best of the best storylines, including his other work. Me being around for half of a century old, I was born April 22 of 94, beauty & the beast debuted on broadway the same month and year on the 18th.
My favorite genre is classical, most specifically musical soundtracks finally able to play beauty & the beast on piano. I'm taking lessons for piano currently.

So so not true. If you're into happily, feel good music then you may prefer those - and yes, personally I adore Pocahontas! But Hunchback is truly next level, it's an outstanding score that is so complex, rich, dramatic, unique and something that no one else could have written. Honestly, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame will go down as one of the greatest scores ever written for film. The piece Sanctuary is breathtaking.
