Alan Menken joins Kristen Anderson-Lopez in his studio for a conversation about songwriting in The Legacy Project: Volume III.
Produced by the Dramatists Guild Foundation, the Legacy Project is a series of interviews featuring prominent contemporary American playwrights, lyricists, and composers. Each interview offers an intimate look into the lives and creative process of these writers of the theater.
The Legacy Project was originally conceived by Jonathan Reynolds. Producers include Nancy Ford, Carol Hall, Peter Ratray and Jonathan Reynolds. The interviews are filmed and directed by Jeremy Levine and Landon Van Soest of Transient Pictures. The Dramatists Guild Fund’s Media Advisor is Leonard Majzlin.

If Kristen Anderson-Lopez ever decides to retire from writing obscenely successful musicals, she could have a wonderful second career as an interviewer. This is marvelous.
Why am I just seeing this? Kristen, that was lovely. You could sense the mutual respect between two accomplished artists.
There's something just simply beautiful about Menken singing his own music and playing the piano. I'm surprised he doesn't record an album with just him and the piano. Some songs just sound better as voice and piano, especially when it's sung by the guy who wrote it.

Before the Lopez’s were attached to Frozen, Alan Menken was attached to the first draft of Frozen, “The Snow Queen” and theres a song he wrote you can find on youtube called “Love Can’t be Denied”

I started tearing up once he played the Aladdin soundtrack. Ugh, it's just so good. So emotional, so many memories behind it. This was such a wonderful interview, probably my favorite interview with a movie composer I've seen. Great job.

The morning after a Disney event (before 7 AM), Alan Menken was concerned about the whereabouts of his driver so that he could get to the airport in time. In spite of that, he posed for pictures with his fans. He is not only super talented but super nice. Loved this video talking about the songwriting process.
A genius without a lamp and a master of his craft. Mr. Menken is just too good for this world.

You can only appreciate someone with this much to offer fully when someone else with so much to offer is the one asking. What an incredible video.
I love his analogy to language. Language is very musical in the sense that tone, pitch, volume, etc. (phonics) are very important. For example, we are often taught that there are 40+ "sounds" in the English language, while there are technically 12 "sounds" (pitches) in music.
Amazing talent between these two. THIS is the magic.
LOVED how Kristen was downright giddy at the beginning of the video. Alan's show at D23 was my highlight last summer. Disney is also in good hands with the Lopez duo.
I think I'll watch this again...and again. And write more lyrics in-between the layers.
I like how he says that he doesn't know where all of these great musical ideas come from. That right there testifies that there is a God and that He knew Alan Menken before the foundation of the world. God demonstrates His greatness through ordinary people. It is so powerful to see that shine through!

I get really teary about Howard and how things ended for him. That had to be so hard back then. Such a sad part of what is otherwise a really beautiful story about him, Menken and Disney and success. But perhaps that's what makes the whole thing as beautiful as it is.
He's an incredible artist. Truly wrote the songbook of my childhood. Thank you for this!

I come to this interview frequently, as I consider it to be one of the best interviews done with Alan. Could you tell me how I can get in touch with him? Do you have his email or any contact details? I would really like to interview him. There is no record of him being interviewed by Brazilians and I really wanted to be responsible for doing this for my country.

I actually had a dream a couple of nights ago that I met Alan Menken.
Hold Up! He won the Oscar, Golden Globe, Grammy and Razzie in the same year!
And he finally won an Emmy back in 2019.
Live-action original movie musicals almost impossible (quote Anderson-Lopez, ~10:00)? So what did they do then in the early days of the talkies till the 60s? I heard original movie musicals were fairly popular then. ;P

She is, I believe, referring to live action original movie musicals made today. La La Land, for example, is the first (almost certain the first) truly successful (critically and commercially) original movie musical film with original songs and a story not based on a musical stage show in years.

I mean, they were paying homage to older Disney musicals, bur not necessarily trying to replicate what Alan had done. Frozen is good in its own way. For the First Time in Forever is the classic kind of I Want song. Super orchestral and princessy. But then you have Let it Go, which is pop-influenced. Somehow these two pieces work in the same project.
