Moel Siabod Scramble, Daear Ddu Ridge Route: Mountain Hike, North Wales

- In this one we take the Daear Ddu ridge scramble route up the magnificent Moel Siabod in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. We started from a free carpark at Pont Cyfyng on the A5 (LL24 0DT) and crossed over the utterly beautiful Afon Llugwy. Walking on the road to begin with but very quickly we entered farm land and the usual easy to follow tracks used by farm vehicles. Crossing over a stile we followed a miners track towards a lake once used by the now disused slate quarry that we were soon passing through, not before tea and sandwiches of course.
The Moelwynion mountain range, of which Moel Siabod is the highest, is renown for being very wet and marshy. The next part of the walk illustrated that perfectly. The next Llyn requires some careful path picking, we tried to stay on the highest ground possible but even then, during a dry week, we found some very boggy patches. From here we could see the whole of the ridge we were heading for, it did look a little daunting but we were really excited to get started!
The grade 1 scramble was fantastic, lots of pulling ourselves over rocks using both hands and feet, but do not fret, this is not as exposed as it feels, the sensation is one of exhilaration not danger. You can pick a few different scramble points as you move along but there is some more obvious signs of the prefer path via scratches and worn rocks, almost shiny now due to so much human contact.
This is a kilometer of scrambling ridge it isn't a route to be sniffed at but also not one to be feared, the vertigo sufferer amongst us gave it a 7/10 on the scary scale.
We eventually popped out close to the summit of Moel Siabod (872m), and the breathtaking views of the national park. We could see the entire Snowdon horseshoe, the Glyders, Tryfan and the whole Carneddau range.....without doubt it has earned its' name for having the best views in Snowdonia. We drank tea, in our very own Valhalla.
We walked North East from the peak over the moonscape-like environment and towards a very obvious, sometimes rather steep, winding path leading towards a wooded area seen at the bottom of the valley close to Capel Curig. Be warned, it can get very boggy towards the last kilometer or so of the path. Once we reached the village we spent some time poking about, as is tradition, and visited the smallest old church in Snowdonia, St Juliatta. Sadly it was all locked up but it was had a lot of soul.
We made our way back along the A5 until we landed back at the carpark. What a cracking day, we couldn't of loved it more❤

Oh I like the sound of a free car park and I am exclusively using OS maps now and and very happy with it. Must admit you did look a bit nervous but I always think nervous is a good thing, it keeps you focused. No chance of a wild swim in there with a bloody monster waiting for you😳. I hate boggy walks so good it did not last too long but have to say, great effort on the scramble, which awesome by the way but not in the snow or ice for me! Music to your eyes, yes hard but good and a real exhilarating feeling I'll bet too! Loved the trig point and a stunning 360, amazing views, certainly worth all the scrambling up there. St Julietta's was a real treat and I can see why you always call in every time you visit there and such a shame you could not get inside, who knows it may have housed the Healing Staff of The Blessed Curic, which had the power to heal skin diseases. The 360°s were out of this world, would hand on heart say the best veiws in Snowdonia of Snowdonia, if that makes sense 👍

Oh yes they're doing a scramble. As one who does not have a head for heights I shall live vicariously through this latest adventure. Ceri you mean business with that rambo adventurer headgear. Kool kukumber kat looking good in the red jacket. 😎. Ah apps. I tend to use outdoor active in emergencies. And my nose 👃. Apps just drain my battery. But I do have a paper map as backup if its somewhere I don't know. Ah you showcase snowdonia beautifully. I must visit one day. Incredible about the slate waste. But makes for lovely scenery. Good advice on fuelling up before a big stretch. Wow views for miles. Fabulous drone footage. So exciting to watch the scramble. Fair play to you Ceri. Great support from Kat. Such a shame most apps are such battery drainers, good on ya tho Emz packing paper maps, we do the sam too and alsmot use the apps as backup/for quick checks or adjustments🔋 really glad to share our Snowdonia adventures with you Emz and hope one day you get a chance to come and hae an explore. When I look back on the ridge I do think "how did I do that?!" What a great looking route Daear Ddu looks and one I only first heard about recently.
Nice to see you mention the legendary Joe Brown too (like me a Lancashire lad😉). In the late 1980s my grandparents were holidaying in Spain and happened to come across Joe Brown climbing there and he jokingly offered to let my grandpa have a go!
I'm not sure I've ever been to CC but I'll deffo be checking out that church if I make it there one day.

Good morning Ceri and Kat. What a great start to the walk. A free car park 🤩. Always gets the day off to a good start. Regarding phone mapping. RIP ViewRanger. Nothing comes close to it imo 😢. I use a lesser known app called Topo GPS. It’s basic but does the job of plotting and tracking very well. I tried Outdoor active and OS maps but found them really frustrating to use. Anyway, back to the walk and what a fab one it was. Who doesn’t love a bit of bog hopping and a scramble? Love Ceri cam too. Perfect job of tracking the mountain goat that is Cat up to the top. Hello again Turtle, yes Kat uses a Tempest 30 and mine is a Talon 33, I really enjoy the Kestrel 38 too, that one has a rain proof cover too, unlike the Tempest and Talon, that sadly don't. All the Osprey backs we have used are great, compfy, spacious and durable, we can even fit 3ltrs of water in a hydration pack into these bags 🎒 👍 💧

I use Outdoor Active for tracking and plotting; however, the route finder is a bit hit and miss. Occasionally I use All Trails, but the maps are too basic, I like a topographical map. Previously used OS maps app but had issues with it not downloading properly.
Lovely hike, it's pretty tough I'd imagine. Glad you found a free car park. I like the derelict buildings. Cool drone footage :) :D

Very enjoyable video guys. Very well filmed & edited as well. The drone shots were really nicely done. I noticed the bit where the water dripping down from the grass was going back up on the right hand side of the video. Was this a 'Ceri special effect '? Funnily enough I did the same thing with one of the waterfalls in our very first UA-cam video. The route up was very scenic but I'm not sure if we would be able to do that scramble. It looked exciting but scary. Fair play to you both for doing it though. The pub at the end of the video is where we ate after conquering Moel Siabod ourselves. We don't use any phone apps for navigation. We use a separate GPS unit. Mine is a Satmap which is quite expensive but uses OS maps.Take care guys. Martin and Michelle. 🙂🙂🙂👍👍

Great video as always - I use all trails. Downloadable maps so using GPS rather than phone signal. Works well and can plan own routes via online portal. Happy adventures to you both 👍

@@TeaInValhalla I use All Trails but find its also a battery killer. I've been doing walks , gone to check my phone and its dead. I normally carry a power bank now to charge the phone whilst using the app. I've been looking at OS Maps and Fat Map which offers a 3D view of the landscape but can't say how well they work? If you read the reviews they all seem to have issues.

Oh my days I love how Ceri plays on Kats fears, we know how you are a little unsteady on the scrambles but she nonchalantly drops in the vertical metres and kilometres. Great stuff! 😂
Visorando all the way, its full Ordnance Survey, its free and its so easy to export a .gpx or load up somebody elses. Its a game changer. Ironically our next video, this friday, delves into that a lot further. We will be doing an app and GPS review, with a touch of humour, but legitimately it will be informative too.

Had not heard heard of Visorando, will definitely check it out if it gets the GenX sign off, will watch out for your review, much needed in this veiwranger less time we now live! 😆 🗺🧭 we are both good with map and compass, but there is definitely something handy about having an electronic map and marker too, has 100% helped on many hikes over the years.

@@TeaInValhalla we are both pretty decent with map and compass although most countries don’t have the level of detailed mapping that Ordnance Survey provides, once out of the UK most countries highest detailed maps are sorely lacking.
We’ve had a couple of situations, whereby a GPS would have given us a better chance at staying alive. First one was super dense and freezing cold fog on a really warm summers day on the Moors and the second, and last time we’ll ever get caught out without one, was a complete whiteout in the Highlands which destroyed the smartphone the second we pulled it out to refer to it.
You don’t need the app for Visorando you can just browse peoples .gpx files, print off sections of Ordnance Survey or best of all plot your own and download the .gpx to use as you wish. We have a lot of fun with it. Prior to this Jill used to mark out areas on the paper map for us to follow with the help of the cats who love having that much paper on the floor. I’d always ask for something around the 12 mile mark that took in a few gradients, she would always plot something at least 17 miles with really serious gradients. Thankfully Visorando has put an end to that. My old bones are very grateful!

Wow guys, that landscape was epic! Loved the drone footage. Very well done for mastering that massive climb, blimey! In terms of apps, we sometimes use All Trails which is OK but at times can be a little bit temperamental. You have to keep checking you're on the route especially if you're in a big field as the direction can be a bit off. Other than that it's not too bad, just depends what track/route you're on 👍

Great video guys, that mountain looks epic! Looked like a great scramble to the top, I think it makes the mountain even better, along as its not too dangerous, the views from the top look class, the only mountain I've done in Wales is Snowden (Rhyd ddu path) I definitely would like to climb that one, loved the bit of history about the church at the end too 👌 thanks, atb Mick 👍

Really enjoyed this one every minute Ceri and Kat. That looked very challenging but rewarding at the top. Makes me want to visit sometime this year. I remember these places as a kid on many family holidays but Id really like to experience the mountains at some point. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow, our hiking hats come off to you Ceri and Kat🤗. Fantastic effort guys, this scramble route looks incredible, and you even managed to film most of it!🤩🙌. Days like this really make you feel alive. Your sense of elation and achievement really came across when you reached the summit Ceri😊👍. The Llyn with that black water was gorgeous. So many stunning views on this hike, views for days!🥰👌. We agree it's definitely important to stop and take it all in, a day in the mountains goes so quickly sometimes you only really appreciate it once you get home! Stunning views on your way down too, love it when the mountain 'apologises' for last time and let's you have an amazing day🤩🙌. What a cute little church at the end of your walk, such a shame you couldn't get inside. In terms of apps we use our satmap instead to plan all our routes, we picked one up second hand really cheaply and it's far from the latest model, but it's really intuitive to use and has the added bonus of being a separate device so it doesn't drain you battery😊👍. We loved watching this adventure on the big screen last night. Brilliant as ever! Hope you both have a great week, Shell and Pete

Ah guys that was brilliant. I love rock climbing and scrambling too but like you Ceri, Alf is not too keen on heights but you did so well getting 872 metres ( I think it is) up to the top where there are fantastic views all round Snowdonia. Loved the drone footage especially over the dark lake. Then of course Capel Curig is so beautiful, one of our favourite places near home and the oldest Chapel in Snowdonia is so beautiful. A cold wild swim with a chained up river monster at the bottom? Now thats living life on the edge! Nice use of the drone to show the old ruins and the landscape. Very smart pro tip to make sure you are fueled and hydrated before a big climb. Ceri on head cam, love it. Nice scrambling. Looks like my kinda climb! That view from the top was incredible and made the climb so worth it right? You both radiate happiness out there climbing mountains and taking in all of your country's beauty.
