Great Gable from Honister Pass, Scramble Route, Lake District: Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Knotts

- We started this iconic Lake District hike from the Honister Slate Mine, on the epic Honister pass (CA12 5XN). There is a five pound charge for all day parking, you pay in the shop. The mine itself is pretty unusual, it is the last working slate mine in England and hosts many different activities and tours, plus it has a cool shop with lots of slate themed gifts.
The start of this circular walk is an obvious, but steep path overlooking the mining works. The hike takes in 4 Wainwrights, just over 7.5 miles of utter beauty (about 5 1/2 hours which lots of sightseeing and tea swilling). The views on this one were outstanding.
The first peak, Grey Knotts (697m), is reached by following a pretty well defined but somewhat broken path alongside a fence. The peak lets you look out over the Buttermere valley.
The path between Grey Knotts and Brandreth (715m) is less defined and can be hard to stay on course in bad weather. Also, it is worth noting, this area can get very boggy, but we were lucky on this day, wall to wall sunshine, and on a fine day, you are able to see your paths direction. Brandreth is an pretty fell, lots of debris from the old boundry fences are scattered around, but sitting under Green and Great Gable and looking over the Ennerdale and Buttermere valleys makes for a stunning peak.
Soon we were heading down towards tarns that are nestled in the gap between Brandreth and Green Gable (801m). The path up the face of Green Gable is wide and clear, it can be a bit rocky and winding in places. The pull up was pretty steep but the views kept us going along happily. The peak provides a real 'wow' moment. We stopped here for a snack and tea, drinking in the atmosphere. From here you can see the very, very steep path down into Windy Gap, which sits between Green Gable and her big sister, Great Gable (899m).
The path here is nasty, it's like walking on marbles. But it is short and you quickly find yourself moving up towards Great Gable's scramble route. This is a relatively easy scramble, fun and not too exposed but we both had to use our hands a few times to keep moving upwards and the rock can be a touch slippery from smoothing off and loose in spots, so take care but don't be too worried! Lots of cairns show the way and they are very welcome as the geology of Great Gable means the path is nondescript on its own. After a false summit we saw the top of the mighty Gable, adorned with a WW1 memorial plaque placed by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club for those members who lost their lives in conflict. It explains how the group also bought the mountain and gave it to the National Trust to ensure its' enjoyment for others, forever. A truly beautiful memorial.
We were almost alone on this usually very busy fell top, so we took our time and sat for a while, looking out over Wasdale and Wast Water, the deepest water in the Lake District. Eventually, we headed off down the scree-filled and mostly awful route down to Moses Trod path. This is a challenging, slippery path, be very careful to not head too far right (West) onto the very bad scree, it is dangerous and zero fun. Kirk Fell loomed in front of us, looked tempting....but we decided to have a quick tonic water and head off along the notorious smugglers route, Moses Trod path.
Moses Trod is a fabulous route back to the slate mine. First created as a cart path to move slate to Wasdale by quarry man, Moses Rigg. However, he soon started using it to smuggle his illegally distilled whisky, often using the crags for Great Gable as hiding spots.
We follow this high level path all the way back to Honister pass, an awesome way to finish the hike, stepping over shimmering green slate and looking out over Buttermere once again, perfect.
We loved this walk, we've done it once before, many years ago, but we had driving rain and thick fog the first time, this day made up for that tenfold, it was tremendous!

Evening Kat and Ceri. Wow, this was a amazing hiking trail and you had a perfect day for hiking. The place is really beautiful...a paradise for hikers with a hundred summits. When you drink tonic we just stared at the background which is breathtaking with the view on the lake. We watched this video on TV and it's better than on the computer screen and we just popped the popcorns🌽🌽(we didn't find emoticon for popcorns😁😁 ). Hope you are ok and have a beautiful week. When I first read "Great Gable" I wondered if you had started to review old and almost forgotten actors; but that mistake was quickly sorted out as I watched your latest adventure out in the open. And what an adventure Great Gable and the surrounding area is for the hiker and the curious person; here are treasures to be found and landscapes to be admired. For a moment I felt the urge to look for ways to visit the Lake District and I have the feeling that the Tourist Board are using you as covert agents to promote the green and pleasant hills! However, when you talked about seeing Isle of Man and Scotland in the distance I distinctly heard in your voice that you are getting ready for adventures outside England and Wales. And only time will tell when you do it:) And thanks for taking the time to talk about the WWI memorial plaque - it is a reminder of the sacrifice of previous generations, but also a reminder that that some Rock climbing club in Ukraine probably will make something similar in their hills soon! Great day for a hike in the lakes. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough for the stem ginger whilst out on the fells in case I had an accident. I can't believe you had Great Gable pretty much to yourself. As a hermit I'm jealous. That clamber off Great Gable in that direction is pretty severe. When I did it I thought where's the fell runners path down. You deserved a Skol after getting down safely. Awesome views and enjoyed you bringing me along on your day out. 👍👍 Paul

Holy Smokes! Views for days! You two, really know how to pick a hike! SHEEP! Love seeing them in videos! Really digg'n that pink buff Ceri! I think pink is your color. No, really. I love when guys can pull off pink! Smart to bring a compass. Those thick clouds around the mountains can make it tough for finding your way. Those loose stones can make coming down a bit like walking on marbles. If anything makes me fall on trail, it's those sort of sections. This is the sort of video that can't be beat. And a fiver for a car park all day pass is pretty decent for the Lakes! 😁 Loved the ghost stile! 👍 Those amazing views from all the Wainwrights you climbed.... just wow! 😃 Nice little tarns on the way up. Windy Gap, great name! 😁 That looked a really steep ascent onto Great Gable, but a big wow with those views. Well done for achieving that fantastic climb and for the scramble back down. Good morning and happy Tuesday Patrick 😊 ❤️ yes £5 all day isn't to bad for the Lakes at all, there is gree parking available a bit further down from the mine, but our legs were begging us at this point to trim the route a bit legs 🦵 🤭🗺
It's a great route and some of the best views we have had to day, you get to peek into many different valleys! 👀
Amazing going back after all these years and seeing much that hasn't changed or been touched, who knows there might be a farmer looking for those fence posts lol!

The little piles of rocks are what we refer to as Cairns, they are built up by hikers and walkers to lead the way when conditions and visibility is poor, they really help, you can add a rock as you pass them 🪨 littong guiding way markers 👍

I always think of you both as being brave for drinking tea from a flask. I prefer to pour it in to a small cup so that it can cool a little. Some don't understand why we drink tea even in the summer but I find this helps.
I've just been to the Lakes myself, although further south. Enjoyed your video and a scramble, always. Will add this to my list for a future visit.

You had us at that first 360 on Grey Knotts 😍. What an absolutely incredible hike. Views for days!🤩🤩. We have only ever climbed Great Gable from the wasdale Sty head pass / breast route, with of course that fantastic 'gable end' view of the peak nestling at the end of the wasdale valley . So to see you scramble up from honnister was super interesting👌. You are right, certainly does tick every box no matter what your particular passion is. Green gable was also just gorgeous 🤩. Ooh marble stones under foot, not something i (Shell) enjoy at all😳🙈. Hats off to you both for that scramble guys😊👊. "Just get up" should be your new catchphrase Ceri and Kat😆👌. What an amazing bunch the fell and rock climbing club are, it's so lovely that great gable is able to be enjoyed by everyone😊🙌. Pete enjoyed the whisky smuggling story🥃👍. We have a trip up to wasdale planned in a couple of weeks so this very much wetted our appetites, thanks guys😊👍. That sense of pride and achievement was very much deserved on this epic hike, we loved it🤩. Thanks as always for taking us along and putting together such awesome content. @@TeaInValhalla it really is a great mountain, can fully appreciate, seeing it for a second time from your eyes, why it is many peoples favourite fell. We we’re accosted by midges atop Great Gable so couldn’t hang around to take in its beauty for long. We certainly loved Green Gable though, incredible views from there! 👍👍

There was a ghostly tail from the top of Great gable. In the mist on the summit a walker came upon a guy dressed in 1920’s walking gear and assumed he was on a charity hike. Chatted for a while and then went down to the Wasdale Head Inn. In the bar there was a picture of the guy he had met - who was an original member of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club!! And he had died 80 years before! Always thought of that story when I was on the summit on my own 😃😃😃
Oh and those stakes were on Brandreth 30 years ago definitely 😃😃😃
