This lens is next on the list. And Chris, seriously, your videos are just stellar. Engaging, informative, and not a second wasted.
GREAT review.. I am on the wait list for this lens... can't wait!!! Thank you...
Brilliant idea to use the commercial to show the difference in the two lens! I tried to skip it and had to go back and watch it once I realized what was going on. Very slick! BTW, you sold me on the lens!!!!
Been wanting a 16-35mm. Was so happy when I first heard about this lens…I’m sold. 🤔 Still on the fence with which gimbal to get, but after seeing this, the M3, FX3 and 16-35mm combo seems like a very nice compact way to go. Great video as always. Thank you!! 🙏🏽😎👍🏽
Great review Chris! Footage looks great too!
Great video! I watch a ton of UA-cam videos about videography/film making and I don’t think I’ve come across your channel before. Loved this one [video] as I am a Sony user (a6400). I’d love a G master lens, but not in my budget.
Anyway, I love your video production quality, transitions and feel. You have great energy and humor. you’ve got a new subscriber in me, and I’ll be taking some cues from your productions to help improve and continue my growth as a creator.
Thanks!!
Pre-ordered this lens bcos I love this focal length but hate the size of the GM on my a7C. The zoom is only thing I’m not sure how I’ll feel about. Great video comparison and true talk.
All of the upgrades on this are excellent and I especially love that the mfd is shorter at the long end! I hope they update the 24-105 in a similar way. Currently just rocking the 20mm 1.8 instead of this but the 16-35 sure looks handy
I am using that 20mm too, think I'm going to swap it out for this, love having the focal range options...
How about 20-70mm F4?
Literally followed your advice at the end to subscribe. I am now subscribed. Your content is very helpful, thank you! :)
Appreciate you!
Hey Chris! Great video! Looking to have this exact setup! (FX3 +16-35 + Crane m3)
How are you attaching the FX3 On the M3??
Are you using a special adapter/etc? Thank you so much!
Accellent video, sharp snappy production, great script just the right amount of humour no bs,loved it and .........it told me what I needed to know.
That's what a video should be
Player to player shrimp to pimp
Your content just keeps getting better
Loved ur informative video plz make detail video for third party lenses for sony for wide and prime lenses
hy nice content, i really want to know if a f4 does the job not so good like a f2.8? do you really need a lot of light for a f4? thx for answering
Looking forward to the Skillshare class. Used your promo link last month and have really enjoyed it.
Great to here Pete! I actually just completed it and the link is in the description 👍🏻
how’s the maximum magnification? and the closest focus distance? :) is it suitable for "macro" b-roll product shot?
Hi CHris, I´ve already preorder mine. I want also buy a remote control (with for the zooming) - which one is it, you´re talking about @5:20 ? where can I buy it?
"you can fight me on that" lol such a great video
Ahhhh!! I can't wait to get this lens when it comes out.
Sony APSC 10-18mm F4 vs Sony FE 16-35mm G F4, which one you choose for FF camera?
How does this compare to the 16-35 2.8. in your opinion Thank you.
Will the M3 also handle the load of the A7SIII instead of the FX3? And are you saying it can't control the zoom function from the M3 itself if you don't use the FX3? So it would not work with the A7SIII? Thx for the great vid!
is the f/4 a deal breaker? looking to upgrade my kit 28-70mm from sony for videos and vlogs
If I could get the 2.8 for around the same price as the 4.0 which one will still be better? Much appreciated.
Great video, thanks for that.
so you can control the zoom with the gimbal? and the crane?
How are you grading these clips in this video?
4:44 this is art.
You get me ❤️
If I get A7RV as my first camera with 70-200mm F4 macro G ii and just use standard Yellow iPhone 15 to shoot closer things with its 13mm, 26mm and 52mm, is it good setup if I'm just hobbyist with good understanding of photography and compositions who want to enjoy shooting and use for personal products shots too? I choose Sony over other brands because they have the lens with unique feature I want like super tele with macro ability that I mentioned, power zoom lens and standard zoom that start from ultra wide 20mm and I love Sony as a brand too. I choose this over A7CII/R because of its good EVF and 4 ways tilt screen and smaller body don't give benefit with big lens other than weight saving and people still notice you have a camera, A7RV is like just as small but with a big EVF attached. Should I get another lens right away, I have the 16-35mm F4 PZ G in mind, or I should get something faster and prime that still light weight on gimbal? I don't really care for bokeh, that tele will able to do it too if I want to, I like my photos and videos to have story and creativity and not blur out the contexts.
Also, have you wonder why put so many effort just to take photos and videos and not just use phone camera to record here and there if it's not your primary work and also your content not all will get pass down and value later?
And what camera setup you bring in everyday life and travel, some people use less bulky and performance camera for their own life but use fancy gears for clients and travel, why, isn't everyday life is most parts of our life and important too?
But OSS cancels out IBIS and the other way around right? Dont think you will get both
I want this! Probably going to sell my 20mm and just rock this for vlogging with my a7iv :)
bro have you checked your description.. so many links, hard to find the one you mention in your video!
You prefer this that the 24gm?
And what about the 16-35 f/4 power zoom vs the 16-35 f/2.8 g master ?
Love the testing during a ad portion. Nice touch
🙏🏼
Great video as always. May I ask what gimbal you used for some of the shots of your holiday?? Looking for a gimbal for my a7s3
Crane M3
Have you a Rode NTG mic going directly into a camera?
What hand tripod was shown in this video ??
When will this lens be available?
Is this compatible with a7iii?
What kind of gimbal is that in the beginning?
Love that Casino Royale clip lmao!
Just sold my f2.8 GM and placed an order on this! It's a no brainer to make the switch since i'm using A7S3 with awesome low light performance, and the shallow depth of field between 2.8 and 4 is really not that huge unless you are doing really high end professional work, for run & gun shoot, this lens is amazing and I can't wait to see what Sony has to offer later!
Great video Chris, keep them up!
cheers man! appreciate it
Tempted to sell my 16-35 2.8 GM. I’m not sure if I’d miss that 2.8 though.
If I had watched this video just a few hours ago, I probably would have left the store with one or at least pre-ordered it. Would love to see you put this up against the Tamron 17-28 :)
As a filmmaker should I buy 16-35 f4 or sigma 24-70 2.8?
Those are two totally difrent types of lenses, id advice the 24-70 if you have no other lens. If you already got a mid range zoom, buy the 16-35
How does this pan out now the new G lens is $200 more expensive than the OSS version? That’s NEW for used the difference is $600 I’m seeing… interested in your take.
I had the sony 16-35 2.8 and sold it since I wasn't using it a lot and bought a used camera body and 3 lenses with the money lol. Do you think the difference between 2.8 and f/4 is going to result in a really huge difference in the images and backgrounds? I'm guessing I wouldn't always have been shooting at 2.8 anyway. Entertaining and informative video! Best of luck to you!
If you vlog and still want to have more blur background, you need f2.8. Also for wedding indoor event videographer, f2.8 is necessary.
F4 is more than enough, as I said in the video wide in general isnt going to give you a ton of background separation
Hey Chris! I thought you've been using Sigma 12-24 instead. What made you stay with 16-35? Thanks!
12-24 was a loaner from sigma. Not mine unfortunately
I wish my 16-35 2.8 gm had the pz. I don't think I would sell my GM for this and I already have the 35 1.4 GM and plan to buy that Tamron 35-150 do I really need 4 lenses that can do 35m. I want this so much for using on a gimbal.
What do you mean no one was asking for this? This is exactly what Ive been begging for
Just because a PZ is pretty niche, you must be super happy they came out with this then!
It's also slower and more expensive and only a little lighter that Sigma 16-28 f/2.8. A better choice IMO 😉
Thanks for the vid you've really tempted me into considering selling my 20mm for versatility of the zoom range in video I can't justify both.. If you could pick one which would you choose?
a comparison video might be a shout👀
What have you end up doing? Lol I’m in the same dilemma 🤣
I sold my 20mm f/1.8 to buy this lens, which is far more versatile. I’m glad I did. This lens is super sharp, & never really needed a wide open aperture on this type of lens.
It can be nice for streaming
cool beans. I think that things is nifty great stuff
Cheers Greg!

I own a 16-35mm of Zeiss especially for photography. Is the sharpness of the new sony 16-35mm so much better?
I recently bought a Sony 14mm f:1.8 GM and this lens is very sharp! (of course) but I am looking for the same sharpness in a 16-35mm.
What is your advice?
What have you end up doing? Lol did you get the new 16-35? Or Sony 14 is better? Please let me know as idk which wide to get
@@hamroz1
I kept the 'old' Zeiss lens. good enough for my purposes.
@@erikbackx3927 oh okay! So the 14mm Sony wasn’t worth it?
@@hamroz1
Oh YES! The 14mm is a GM-lens with outstanding performance! But I only use it for landscape fotografie.
@@erikbackx3927 what’s your advise for someone who occasionally uses wide angle but mainly for realestate? Which lens would you go for
The only lens that i feel like I’ve actually “needed” in a very long time. for RE video I shoot 14mm prime then throw on that 24-70 or 35 prime for details, and I feel like this is the best lens at a realistic price point for every RE videographer. Bc honestly NOBODY needs 2.8 for RE video or establishing wedding shots.
So true, the price really is a massive feature, for what it offers it’s extremely competitive
Glad I’m not the only one who thought this. I sold my GMaster when I saw the images with this lens. The GM always seemed soft to me and combined with the weight and the fact I never took full advantage of f2.8, it’s a no brainer. Now I just have to hold out until June 😅
You and me both, this has already been sent back 🥲
@@chrisbrockhurst sent back where?
What are you waiting for June for?
@@photosblossomsau1624 to Sony
I just can’t give up OSS. Personal preference. If it weren’t the case, I’d be on this like white on rice.
Why wouldn’t you say what the name of the lens is?
2.8>4. 50 1.2 just got it cant wait
Liked video after 25" and watched to the end. Thanks.
🙏🏼
Sheraton at Black Rock?
Sony 16-35mm Vario-Tessar T FE F4 costs $998, not $1398
My current feelings with Sony and all these new bits is like the part in the movie, Braveheart. You know, when the entire line of Scottish soldiers were facing down the English charge and Mel Gibson kept yelling, “HOLD…HOLD…”
Love this 🤣
I’m in the same boat man!
Don’t know how they are selling it so damn cheap. It’s a beauty
@@chrisbrockhurst I bought that Zeiss 16-35 and I’m kicking myself because this new lens just tanked the resale. Also can I just say it should be a law every lens needs a dedicated iris ring
@@OriginaldoBo If you can sell it now you might be alright but that puts you without it for a few months.. the OSS will still be a draw for some people but i can honestly see Sony dropping the price of the Zeiss too, makes zero sense priced where it is now.
Except for the F4 it sounds great.
I would also love the upcoming 24-70 GM II to be an internal zoom PZ lens!
One can hope..
unfortunately its not as it turns out from the leaked picture
I think I can recognize DOM REP Hotels at first sight! Was I right?
Yep
This or the 20mm 1.8? I have a 24-20, 70-180, need a wide lens. I don't shoot real estate, just would like something wider than 24 mm. Thoughts?
Very different lenses, F4 vs F1.8 is a whole debate in itself. If it’s just the focal length your after then this is a no brainer
Make a custom button for clear image zoom, and voila, you have a 30mm 1.8 lens. Also if your camera has it, crop mode gives you additionally x1,5 reach which gives you 45mm 🕺
Tamron 17-28 f2.8 is a very good lens with 6 year warranty. I have it with a7c and it is my main lens. In video it is a 17-42 f2.8 in aps-c mode. Very precise, very good optical lens, fast autofocus, good contrast. Plastic are high quality and weather resistant tested in Alaska in bad weather condition. It is a no brainer.
The Sony 20mm f1.8 is also a solid lens very good if you work in low light condition or with a gimbal. The tamron has also internal zoom so it is very good with gimbal. The tamron give the advantage to shoot at 17mm for photo, 20, 24, 28,35,42mm for videos without any loss at 4k resolution. Photos are incredible with the tamron from 17 to 28. It is one of the best.
What is that beeping sound?

Before watching I'll guess this is the f4 16-35... although the thumbnail looks wrong then
Yep that’s it. But the design looks identical to the 24GM!
Damn! I just picked up the 14-24 sigma and I’m thinking UGH! But I do love sigma and I’m one of those nutters that has to have all their lenses by the same brand! Messes with my head otherwise!
Haha nothing wrong with being brand loyal
I clicked the subscribe
I would honestly trade my gm straight up for this lens. Not a fan of the gm at all.
I’ll still take the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 for $900 instead.
Other than the price, do you feel it beats this lens in most of other categories?
@@snapjacksonphotography can’t say this new F4 specifically, but I sold my 16-35 GM after getting the Tamron. IMO, it was a better image, smaller, lighter. Extremely better value.
@@snapjacksonphotography i have the 17-28 f2.8 and it is an incredible lens in photos and video. I don’t regret my choice. 420g and 17-42mm f2.8 in aps-c mode. Solid and weather resistant, internal zoom and lightweight for gimbals. 6 years warranty. For the price around $1200 Canadians it is difficult to beat. I also have the 70-300. Same thing very good lens as well incredibly lightweight but still very good plastic quality and weather resistant. I use it for animal wild life photography and landscape and i use the 17-28 for everyday use and landscape and videos. Both very sharp and fast autofocus.
I’d get the even cheaper Tamron
Nah
Get a pull-up bar brother
how is it cheaper though ? 😄
Sigma 14-24 ftw
Why are you holding a shot gun mic?
You must be new here, welcome! Is there a specific reason why I can’t? Interested 🙃
There is nothing specifically wrong with holding the microphone. It’s not designed with handling noise in mind. But your audio sounds great; so there is no issue. I’m just curious why you would spend the extra money on a shotgun microphone, then treat it like a $20 handheld mic; such as the Behringer xm8500.
I’m sure you have a reason; I was just curious what your rationale was. I have a lot of microphones for different jobs, so I had never thought to hold my shotgun microphone in my hand. I would always grab one of my handheld microphones for that. I thought maybe you had stumbled across something innovative.
Sigma is releasing a 16-28 2.8 almost same weight and it will be probably cheaper. I will get the Sigma. Nice review anyway.
"No money exchanged ..." only the lens.
Canons AF feels faster than Sony, coming from a former Canon shooter and a new Sony shooter, it’s not even close especially in Video, cropping in doesn’t solve the focus breathing issue. I mean if Jared Polin is using the R3 for stills over the R1 then I’d say the AF debate is pretty much settled 🤷🏻♂️
Sony AF speed is adjustable in the camera, you can have it super fast but i don't like the look, I have mine set slower so it looks more natural. Having had, used and owned both Canon and Sony I personally know which is better but importantly more accurate, consistently. Begins with an S.
@@chrisbrockhurst accurate and consistent is canons game, focus breathing alone hinders Sony, thus making it more inconsistent.
Where I notice it a lot more is at a distance, as soon as the subject enters in the frame, running towards and moving from left to right.
Maybe I just need to fine tune it more, but that’s just my personal experience with my R6.
Looks like the Dominican Republic, or am I mistaken?

Look bad with OSS ON
All these lenses are a waist of money.I’ve purchased €15,000 on Sony lenses used with my Sonny A7R 4 and they make no difference to the end quality of my videos ..The Camera and the lenses are rubbish.
Poor craftsman is quick to blame his tools
The Zeiss is the worst Sony lens I have ever owned.
7 minutes 47 seconds of a lens review video - without ever mentioning its name, except for referring to it a gazillion times as "this lens". Strange approach...
The lens name is shown as a title on every single example shot which is 2/3rds of the video fella 🤷🏻♂️
Cheaper in the same sentence as sony is a republican talking 👉 Trump tariffs made them more expensive 🤔
Should stop using words like “ this one “ to describe an item . Hard to know which lenses you’re referring to at That moment
