When I was at Crossway, I stood in their showroom for almost half an hour trying to decide between the Horween and the goatskin. I went there with the purpose of buying the Horween Heritage, but the goatskin edition was SO nice!
If you are not like me, buying the Horween for a specific purpose, then it really needs to be a purchase you make specifically because you want it. Otherwise, for $100 less, the goatskin edition is really super excellent.
(If you are near Wheaton, you can go to their HQ and right inside they have a showroom, and everything in it is 30% off no need to sign up for any membership.)

Great video with fairness and balance. The Horween’s uniqueness is not enough for me where I feel you have to handle with delicate hands. The goatskin will last the test of time without worrying about scratches and scuffs. Overall, everyone will have to decide what works for them. Love it Tim!

'Patina'. That's what the Horween made leather will do. Goatskin will too, but depending on the tannage, it can take longer. In any case, the absolute BEST thing you can do to keep the leather serviceable is to put your hands on the Bible and use it. Applying what you learn in it will keep yourself in serviceable condition too. :^D

I LOVE the new heirloom heritage! I could only afford one, so I chose the new horween. I was attracted to the idea that the bible will age as I do, and it will shows signs of growth the more I grow in maturity as I read the scriptures. Now I must say the black goatskin is very very beautiful. I would say the black with gold is more beautiful to my eyes, but for use as my lifetime bible I went with the horween and so far (3 months in) I have no regrets.

Horween Bibles should be light brown/tan, so that the patina effect comes through more visibly.
It has a "cowboy on the trail" kind of look to it.

I plan for my first rebind to be Horween leather. I love it! It looks like it takes the blind stamping really well too

Love the Horween leather here along with the slightly more minimalist aesthetic with blind stamping and non-gold gilt liner. Some day hope to make this my lifelong Bible. (I really like the Omega edition as well with the cross reference, two-column design.)

I use leather TN’s or Travelers Notebooks, so Horween for me if I were able to purchase. I am ok with my Bible showing my journey.😊 Granted, I would prefer a bit lighter brown so that it would patina to a rich deep honeyish golden deep brown.

Been using a Legacy Heirloom in black goatskin for 5 years now. The Horween looks fascinating, but I’m not sure I’d prefer it over my super supple goatskin…although I have considered a rebound of some sort. Maybe in Badalassi Cowhide…🤔
If you use your Bible, you’ll get plenty of wear on the gilding - I think that’s cool. It’s especially interesting how you can see study/reading habits that way, both which parts you may spend more time in and how you usually hold it.

If I could afford it, I think I would go with the Horween. I like the idea of leather that wears in. That is one of the things I like about the Saddleback leather bags that I have.
It would definitely take on that similar look and feel.
I have all my Bibles in Goatskin but I’m going to buy a Horween covered Bible because it’s so different. Would I buy it as my only premium Bible…no I would not do it.

Great video, exactly what I was looking for. I've used the Legacy goatskin version pretty much daily for over a year now and it remains solid and soft. the spine is showing wear though that I didn't expect = not nice patina, more like rough edges that I'm not a fan of. Think I'll switch to the horween leather version thanks to your insights.

At this particular time, I have neither Horween or goatskin on any Bible (only one in my collection so far with actual leather). If/When I do go for my first "premium" Bible, odds are it'll be a goatskin.
But I have to admit . . . a Horween rebind sounds intriguing . . .

Goatskin rules for me. I don’t care to spend the extra $ for a Bible that looks beat up after a few months (or weeks) of use. Goatskin looks new for years if not decades. Imho. Thanks Tim for a fair review

I love the durability and beauty of the goatskin on my Bible. I would be very sad. whenever a scratch or mark was added to the surface of my Bible, so the Horween leather just wouldn't be for me. It would be a Bible that would stay in the box, that I would be afraid to touch, let alone take out to read every day.
I tend to feel the same way... it would scare me to use it too much.
“Horween” is a pretty broad description. It would be helpful to know which type of Horween leather is used here. From the appearance, it looks like a greasy leather such as Chromexcel or Dublin. Those leathers have extreme toughness and durability, but they show superficial scratches and nicks very easily. Some people like the worn appearance and others don’t. It’s important to remember that greasy leather is some of the most durable leather you can possibly find, regardless of the delicate nature of its finish.

Jon I bought the Horween for the purpose of using it daily and filming it’s appearance once a month. I have January & February on my UA-cam channel now. Not a huge change yet, but I think the end of the year will be a bigger change.

I would...get the Horween if money weren't an issue. I like the blind stamping on the spine, and ribbons are easy enough to change.
That blind stamping is NICE!
I think I would pick the Horween Bible. Yeah, sure it will likely become stained or whatever later on. But to me, that just makes it unique and gives it a little character. But if you're worried about the cover getting damaged, you can always buy a Bible cover to keep it in. My Bible cover is black and has three zipper compartments. I keep my Bible in one compartment and my Sunday School book in another compartment and then there's a smaller compartment on the front which I use for pens or miscellaneous items, and it has the books of the Bible scattered around on both sides.
I'm actually planning on buying the Horween edition this Friday.

Goatskin has been my favorite since I got into the premium Bible market. I love the way it feels, the floppiness, and the durability. The Horween is beautiful too but I would pick the goat. Thanks Tim for a great review and comparison. Enjoyed watching you and the other Tim’s talk shop today. 👍

The only thing I would change about the horween is that I would prefer a regular gold leaf or no color on the edges of the Bible. Not a lover of the salmon color. I own the horween so..:)

Question for you (and maybe a future video?) I have a Schuyler and some pages have gotten a couple good creases in them and not sure if I should try to iron them out - any advice on general at home Bible page repair? (I can’t be the only one who has damaged my Bible by accident :))

Although I wouldn't like to see any blemishes on my bible, I'd still go for the horween leather. That would mean that horween bible isn't going anywhere else but on my study table only.. 😁

I like both. But wonder if it is a form of greed for me to have started collecting some of these. We're warned to beware of every kind of greed because it's idolatry. I've gotten too caught up in all this. God provided me with an excellent Bible for $1 from the thrift store, leather, personal sized, great paper, an NASB Holman. Then I bought the expensive (but excellent) ESV study Bible in cowhide. It's beautiful but almost 5 pounds. I bought some others too. I think this is getting out of hand and I should stop buying more.
