I think the ribbon is such a personal preference thing. I have the ESV Heritage featured in this video and an ESV PSQ with the bigger, thick red ribbons. I have to say that I think I personally prefer the thinner ribbons to thicker ribbons. But I think that just shows a personal preference to what we like and maybe Crossway is just going to stick with that. Great video as always!
Good morning everyone!! Hope everybody has had a great week so far and I hope the rest of the week is even better!! Thanks Tim , looking forward to another great review!
They need to release a more premium version of the personal reference single column… Allen tried but I want the same compact size but in a nicer format.
The Heirloom Alpha ESV looks like an amazing Bible, and I'm sure it'd be great to have, but for my money I'd still prefer the Schuyler PSQ ESV for a portable double column premium ESV (e.g. I like the PSQ's red accents; I prefer the Schuyler PSQ Milo typeface to the Alpha Lexicon typeface).
I personally struggle with lexicon because of how thin the letters are. I have great vision and still, I have a hard time focusing on the font. I use the thinline and I'm planning to switch to a different bible. Wish comfort print wasn't proprietary because its my favorite. Is the PSQ easier to read than the thinline edition?
It reminds me of the size of the Cambridge Emerald which for me is perfect. I’m so glad Crossway have released this! Totes gonna grab that! Cheers Tim! X
I bought the Alpha in Wellington leather. Actually by mistake. I thought I was ordering the Heritage. lol. BUT I liked the Alpha so much that I kept it and made it my new “truck Bible.” I’m looking at the Legacy, waiting for it in Wellington I think, and just more looking into their “creeds and confessions” Bible. I am an Allan fan primarily but the heirloom Bibles by crossway are SO beautiful. When I did get the Heritage in Wellington leather, I made that the family reader that sits on the living room so every hand that touches it will leave their mark on the patina over the years.
Love this review!!! At first, I thought the Alpha was basically the Heirloom Thinline that was cropped down and everything else looks the same, so I was hesitant to get it. But it was that line match that totally sold on me.
Thanks for the review TIm. I'd love to see Crossway move to a 32 or 36GSM paper in their Heirloom bibles (thinking 316 with the LSB and Allan with the Readers). I would sacrifice a tiny bit of thinness for a thicker paper. Crossway layouts are some of the best, but I don't care for the 28GSM paper.
I watch all your videos but this may be the bible ive been the most tempted to purchase myself. ESV isn't my top translation but that size and quality is fantastic.
You had me excited that they maybe had finally decided to make a premium PSR edition....sigh nope I had and loved the original version in lambskin, although it was let down by the poorly printed text block. I would love to see that with the RJ treatment someday...
Thanks, Tim, for this review. I am really impressed with the quality of Crossway's heirloom Bibles and your passion in all your reviews. So, I was wondering - do you plan to do a review of the recent ESV Heirloom Heritage, Wellington leather edition? I just received my copy a few days ago, and it took my breath away! I would love to hear your comments. BTW - I look forward to reading your book.
I'm glad that it is not printed in China. With more and more persecution of Christians there, I find myself looking for Bibles printed in the USA or other countries. I still wish the words of Christ were in red. I'm hoping you have some insight as to why so many of the newer translations don't use that. This one says it has an 8pt font. That is too small for me as I get older I tend to look for the larger print when available. Great review and look forward to your future videos. I just watched your Bibles you don't like video and found out you are from TN. I'm in TN too, so hello neighbors! Sending Christian love and hope to you and your wife. Maranatha!
I think of the two I would prefer the Heritage since I like single column layouts. I am looking forward to the True Tone version of the Heritage next year.
It may be roughly the same pagination as the Large Print Compact (one of which was the first Bible that I got more than two years ago -- my first Bible in decades), and seemingly the same font size . . . but it looks like the leading (space between lines) MIGHT be just slightly larger on the Alpha. If it's line-matched, that would be new as well (don't think the LPC was). I do find it interesting that the Alpha has maps, but no concordance (LPC has no maps, but DOES have a concordance). If you can get away w/out concordance or cross references, this would be a VERY NICE OPTION!! I'm certainly interested . . .
This Bible in Wellington might just become my new preaching Bible! I typically like the 8.5 x 5.5 but I think this might be close enough to work, plus I always did like the PSR too.
Every time Crossway comes out with something new I get excited…only to get sticker shocked into another Schuyler or steadfast. That Wellington leather is cool I guess, but not almost $400 cool, especially for a Bible the size of a note card.
I love my Omega. Though, I feel like at this price range, I'd still lean towards getting a PSQ. Then again, opening the Omega is always a great experience, I'm sure that I would also feel the same about the Alpha.
I have a personal size ESV study Bible. I would love to have it rebound in a nice leather and nice ribbons. Any suggestions? I love your videos! Thank you for all the hard work you put into researching Bibles for us!
I think I found my forever small Bible and daily driver. Its probably bad that I keep my Schuyler in great condition, but with this, I’ll drive into the ground because of its life time guarantee😂
I was able to handle an Alpha at a local Christian Bookstore. To be honest, I was disappointed with it. I have an Evangelical Bible exclusive Crossway Heirloom Omega in green. I love this Bible! The Alpha in black leather just didn’t feel as nice or as high quality. For the money, I think the Schuyler PSQ is better.
I've been waiting for a long time for this Bible to come out, as I have long felt that the ESV Thinline Bibles are too tall and skinny (they just don't feel hearty or "Bible-y" enough in my hands), and the ESV Large Print Compact has a problem with really bad ghosting (although it is a nice size for carrying around). I've been on the search for an ESV that I can carry around in my backpack and use while I'm out and for sharing with friends, and perhaps this could be a good option. I don't understand why this Alpha edition doesn't have a concordance (it adds a lot of usefulness and barely adds any thickness to the Bible), and also why they are sticking with the glossy dedication/family and map pages(I've long had issues with these pages on my other ESV thinlines, where they tend to smudge up and get what looks like ink marks bleeding through when I write on them). I wish, also, that there was something else in terms of red accents with the chapter numbers or book titles, just to give it a more beautiful look. Finally, I wish that Crossway had a non-premium version of this size Bible that could be more affordable (honestly I am not considering the Large Print Compact because I bought several to give away and was appauled by how bad the ghosting is on them). Wow, more expensive than a Schuyler/Allan/Cambridge! For a nearly $300 bible definitely not for me, but could be "the one" for somebody at that nice small size
Crossway's price is $203 with their free Crossway+ membership... and I would guess that Amazon and ChristianBook will be even lower than that when arrive in stock.
Hey Tim. Crossway lists the font size of both the Thinline and Alpha as 8 point. You stated the Thinline has a slightly larger type face. Is the Thinline font noticeably larger than the Alpha?
Hey great video. Thanks. I’ve been looking for my perfect Bible. I’m hoping to find a BIG ESV. I keep looking online and it seems like they’re all personal size or compact. I want a big Bible with big letters and thick paper. Like a Bible for the house that’s made to last and easy to read. Has anybody come across an ESV Bible like that? You can get king James Bible’s like that, but I can’t seem to find an ESV.
Do you know if the brown Wellington leather edition of this Bible will patina with time and use? I know the black goatskin won’t but I wonder about the other. Thanks for any answers you have.
I wrote Cromwell Leathers, where the Wellington Leather comes from, about the question regarding this leather Patina-ing over time and use and this is their reply: "Thank you for your inquiry through our website. Why does Crossway hate ribbons? Even inexpensive versions of the NKJV come with two ribbon markers that are wider. It seems like any ESV bound in either Buffalo Leather or Genuine Leather should come with at least two ribbons. I love the quality from Crossway, but they do seem to love to skimp on ribbons.

@@RoastBeefSandwich for me personally the type setting/text block is the most important part of a Bible. I agree - I find one word widows very annoying and distracting, and there seems to be a lot of them in the poetic sections that this video shows. I also agree Schuyler handles single column poetry much better.
@@stedfastt I’m seeing a lot of comments in many places about Bibles now being a money grab for a lot of companies. This one is beautiful and maybe one day I can afford one but for now I find so much excitement looking through eBay for vintage bibles that were once loved from the 70’s and 80’s. I just bought a few childhood bibles that I long forgot about. To me it’s the sweetest thing.
Correct. The only downside to the PSQ. The Quentel has the concordance and a third ribbon, but also bigger dimensions. Worthwhile trade off for an EDC, in my opinion.
The average American walks around with a $1,000 phone in their pocket that only lasts 5 years, but you are worried about someone spending $300 on an artfully produced copy of God's word that will last a lifetime?
@@YESHUA_byRaynal EVERY word in the entire Bible is from Jesus. John 1:1-3 The Word Became Flesh [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. I really love how simple this Bible is, that is what I am looking for! (no wide margins, no commentary, etc) but I would like a larger Bible and single column. Any suggestions?
I really like the ESV translation but it really would have been nice if the ESV translators would have put back God’s Holy Name in English, either Yahweh or Jehovah, where it belongs throughout the scriptures much like what the original American Standard or the Rotherham translators did. Peace
But those are a guess at the Hebrew YHWH and Latin. Unless you are the scholar, why wouldn't you want it in English? They do use all capitols to signify YHWH when it is used.

I agree - I find one word widows very annoying and distracting, and there seems to be a lot of them in the poetic sections that this video shows.
I also agree Schuyler handles single column poetry much better.
@@RoastBeefSandwichI could eat a small potato.
Surprised they can’t make these bibles cheaper.
Just feels like such a money grab. This is more expensive than a Schuyler.
The gospel coalition store has them a lot cheaper than crossways store. So check that out.
PSQ doesn’t have a concordance.
Correct. The only downside to the PSQ. The Quentel has the concordance and a third ribbon, but also bigger dimensions. Worthwhile trade off for an EDC, in my opinion.
You say it’s opaque. OK, but it doesn’t LOOK opaque.
Just show the video.
Those ribbons are a disgrace.
Complaining about ribbons? Really?
This Bible is over $300.00 USD. Get yourself a cheap one and give the balance to the poor.
The average American walks around with a $1,000 phone in their pocket that only lasts 5 years, but you are worried about someone spending $300 on an artfully produced copy of God's word that will last a lifetime?
@@justinj_00 I'm not speaking to aveagae Americans; I was speaking to Christians.
ESV Bibles should have Red Letters in the Words of JESUS.
There a few that do.
@@YESHUA_byRaynal EVERY word in the entire Bible is from Jesus.
John 1:1-3
The Word Became Flesh
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
[16] All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Anyone ever think that wrapping our bibles in dead animal skin might be a trick? A blood sacrifice to someone we would rather not make a sacrifice to?
No.
@@2SnakesWell you should sometime.
@@WilliamKister They also guess at how to pronounce the name of Jesus, but it doesn’t stop them from using his name in scripture.
