Natalie was the second female swimmer to win six medals in one Olympics. The first was Kristin Otto from the former East Germany winning six gold medals in 1988.
spitz in 1972, biondi in 1988 and phelps in 2004 all won 6 medals in a single olympics before 2008. and phelps won 6 medals in 2008 2 days before coughlin did, so she wasn't even the first to do so at that olympics. it is correct that she was the first clean woman to do so, but she didn't use those qualifiers. she instead claimed to be first in a category in which she was 4th at best
Kristin Otto was part of an East German team that was systemically doping for years. But yes, she won 6 golds. They’re not really counted as the a East Germans were known dopers.
