By far THE best quick tutorial on this subject. I was trying to explain this to someone and you did it better. One trick is to use the R analog trim instead of the knob. This way it sticks with flight mode and you don't have to worry about it changing model to model. Just be sure to use analog so you get full +/-100% throw.

Was very scared of spending the money on this iX14... after getting one and spending time with it, so glad that i did.
So many great attributes to this thing. Veryvery very happy with the simplicity and the absolute ease of use in contrast to the nx8

One thing I found when setting up AS3X is that it won’t actually activate till the throttle goes above some threshold, I think it’s 25% or so for a couple of seconds. I’ll have everything set right in forward programming, then move the plane around to test and the flight surfaces don’t move. This is correct - increase throttle (making sure throttle cut is not cut), then AS3X is active and the flight surfaces will move in reaction as expected.
Can’t tell you how many times this has frustrated me when setting up. I think it’s all set, but no actual movement. Throttle up, try again, it all works.
Of course, take the prop off an electric plane when doing this to avoid runaways and injuries!

Question, I have an AR20310T DSMX 20-Channel PowerSafe receiver with the AS3X module option. I mounted the receiver and AS3X module to a removable board. I would like to use this in three of my larger airplanes. Is it as simple as a different setup for each plane and does the AS3X forward programming parameters I assigned stay with that model memory? I realize I need to bind the receiver to the other aircraft memory but I’m not certain if the save includes the AS3X information automatically with that save. Thanks in advance for the response. Just learning the IX14 and AS3X forward programming 😊

I also can’t find gyro settings in forward programming.
I have a Carbon Cub S2 RTF plane. It came with a Spektrum DXS transmitter and an installed SPM4650C receiver. I purchased another Spektrum ix14 transmitter to buddy box these two transmitters. The Ix14 is an instructor’s transmitter, and the DXS is a student’s one. I managed to buddy box them with all the functionality except I cannot find how to change the flight modes on the instructor’s ix14 transmitter. After I select Forward Programming I do not get the next screen with Gyro Settings as in your video, but the message “Connecting….” and “Navigation Time Out” afterward.

With the 14 & 20, 'jailbreaking' a used rx is sooooo much easier than using a computer. I found this by accident (I've not used safe/gyro in 3 years, since I discovered I didn't need it, after my 2nd month of getting back into flying after a 20yr break).

BD, do I need to set up AS3X .
Or can Iby-pass it and simply set up safe using mode 1 beginner, mode 2 intermediate , and mode 3 for advanced. I'm just a bit confused there. You covered everything else very nicely.

You can enable Safe in all 3 modes. You will need to manually configure settings. Another option is to download the profile from HH database.

Well, I think a few things you said might add to the confusion. When I watch one of my own videos, I see things I should have done differently. Even with Forward Programming, setting up an AS3X/SAFE receiver is a complicated process. Most folks don't have the patience for it and rarely succeed on the first try. It's best to find someone who has some experience setting them up.

    • @BDTennessee

@@BDTennessee I wouldn't have suggested lowering the priority as much as you did. I typically use 100% in SAFE mode since I use 100% travel and 100% dual rate. This makes the AS3X gain drop to zero just as the stick hits the stop. I've been doing this for a while on AR636's. I'm not sure how the FP receivers handle it since I don't know if the dual rate info is forwarded to the receiver. I'll do some tests. For my non-SAFE/AS3X only flight modes, I set the priority to 150%. This makes the gyro gain drop to zero at full stick deflection if my dual rates are set to 50%. Horizon's default of 160 would make it happen at 40%. Since I never set my dual rates lower than 50%, my AS3X gains will always drop to zero at or before full stick deflection. You suggested 75% which would prevent the gains from going to zero. I'm not sure how that would work since I've never tried it. I wouldn't think you'd want any gyro gain at full surface deflection.
Since the wing is usually the first to go into oscillation, I generally run 10% more AS3X gain on pitch than roll and 10% more gain on yaw than pitch. My initial settings are fixed gains of 30, 40, and 50 percent for AER respectively. Since I can land and easily make changes on the ground with FP, I don't go to the trouble of setting up a gain channel on the knob. And, I don't have to use the capture gains function.
Of course, the biggest issue with gyros is getting the gyro to move the surfaces in the correct direction. Newbies need an off position so they can enable the gyro at a safe altitude and turn it back off if they have something reversed. Knowing what to look for when preflight a gyro-equipped plane is crucial. Some UA-camrs suggest turning the plane upside down and rocking it back and forth thru level. This exercise proves nothing if all you're looking for is movement. The ailerons will always zip back and forth in this test, even if they're reversed. Instead, they should tilt the plane about 45 degrees from level in SAFE mode and make sure the surfaces are going to return the plane to level flight.

I have a strange problem with this setup on which i wanted to ask your advice. This is plane number 5 for which i setup AS3X/Safe. In this setup i am using the AR637TA on which i did a factory reset. Then i followed your video step by step. I put the selection on the right slider of my IX20. Up is Safe, middle should be AS3X and down is Safe/AS3X off. Now the problem is that up and down position work as usual but in the middle i am not getting AS3X. I throttled up the motor, made sure all travel settings are on 100% and did a re bind of the receiver. I even did another factory reset and went through the whole procedure again. But i can not get AS3X to work. Do you have any suggestions that i should try ?

    • @PatrickVannie
      @PatrickVannie Рік тому +2

After a few days thinking about this problem, i found the answer to the question. Reason why the AS3X on its own is not working is because i did not set up a gain channel selection when i initialized the AS3X settings. I forgot to do this because i use the R knob as a throttle cut and never adjust the gains in flight. But if you don't select a gain channel then the AS3X thinks the gains are 0 and it does not activate. So i set it up on the R knob anyway and then when all was finished i just captured the gains so they went from adjustable to fixed. Now problem solved. I can control Safe/ASX3X/AS3X off with my right slider and i deactivated the use of the R knob for the gain channel in channel assign :-) Just wanted to post this reply, so maybe it will help others in the future when they use this video which is still the perfect manual for setting up safe and AS3X :-)
