Just brilliant. Madonna is amazing and her ballads are excellent. Madonna doesn't get enough credit for her voice.

I agree totally. Her album "Something to Remember" from which "You'll See" was released is classic which features her ballads up to 1995. She has had some amazing ballads since then such as "You must love me", "Don't cry for me Argentina", "Frozen" and "Ghost Town" to name a few. Take a bow to the Queen!!

Hi guys! Great reaction. "Take a Bow" is a very sweet and soft breakup ballad, and "You'll See" is a breakup survival song. I always loved "You'll See" much more than "Take a Bow" (although TB is a beautiful song too), because I always felt that "You'll See" is a stronger and more characteristic Madonna song. As Madonna herself said, both songs represent two sides of her. "Take a Bow" shows her romantic side that believes in love, and "You'll See" is her other side that says f*ck it, I won't take sh*t from anyone.

This is one song Madonna produced with famed adult-contemporary producer David Foster, so that explains the more mainstream sound. It’s a bit cheesy for me but it’s an effective power ballad, and was another hit for her. Foster is most known for his work with Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. In his autobiography, he has a section where he talks about creating this song with Madonna. He had glowing things to say about her work ethic and how his experience taught him so many artists want producer’s credit without doing the work but how Madonna was instrumental in the entire process, and had a grade A work ethic. He mentioned that at one point she was lying down on the floor and just blurted out how lonely she was. He also said she couldn’t help but exude sex and was one of the sexiest women he’d ever met.

You're right, "Verás" is even better (if possible) than You'll See. And as native spanish speaker, I have to compliment her for the big effort she made to pronounce correctly the spanish lyrics, something that use to be very difficult for english speakers, it shows that she practiced, her delivering was almost perfect. They should totally react to Verás as well.

Madonna's delivery really makes the song and draws you in with that hook - 'All by myself....' might be interesting during the after shows if you start with your critique and then maybe share some notable info about the song from like wikipedia, an interview, a review, etc - like when it was released, was it a big hit, a #1, a failure, the premise of the video, etc. compare that to what your interpretation at the start of the after show. it might be enlighten for you and the viewers to know more about these classic Madonna songs

You said before how the video for "Ray of Light" might have impeded your ability to enjoy it. My advice is to listen again with a lyric video. The song was the the embodiment of that whole period in her life. Of when a person has attained spiritual enlightenment as if he or she is is now "awake", when before they were asleep with most of the rest of the World.

When I heard Madonna was going to make a sequel of take a bow I thought it was going to be really boring. Cause you had Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston.... everyone making ballad songs. But Madonna came out with this amazing song and blew my mind . To make it better she even improved the concept of the original video.

Madonna "You'll See is continuation of "Take a Bow"

  • @MichelKulmann
    @MichelKulmann Рік тому

    Great reaction, guys,
"You'll See" was the first single from Madonna's 1995 ballad compilation called, "Something to Remember".
This is was she said about the album: "So much controversy has swirled around my career this past decade that very little attention ever gets paid to my music. The songs are all but forgotten. While I have no regrets regarding the choices I've made artistically, I've learned to appreciate the idea of doing things in a simpler way. So without a lot of fanfare, without any distractions, I present to you this collection of ballads. Some are old, some are new. All of them are from my heart."
The video, as you saw, is a follow-up to the massive success "Take A Bow" and both the song and the video have a Spanish version, called "Verás", released for the Latin countries in the same year.
I still remember the first time I saw it on MTV. It was a one hour special program to promote the album, but it was only in 2009 that the video was included on an official released, the "Celebration" video collection.
I know many fans turned their noses up to this because they always expect some kind of controversy from Madonna, but, as a fan since the 80s, I like it when she shows her soft side as well.
There is an awesome interview from that era Madonna gave to the VH1 channel when she was in London to record the soundtrack for the film "Evita" and she talks about her slow songs and why they play a special part in her career.

Madonna’s songwriting is often influenced by events and eras in her life and career. “You’ll See” which she recorded in September 1995 was likely reflective of her intimate relationship with Carlos Leon which was unraveling at that time. They met in 1994 in NYC, they started dating and she enlisted him as her fitness trainer. Shortly thereafter, their affair became so rocky that one NYC tabloid wrote-“By the end of 1995, the relationship ended so badly that Madonna changed the locks at her New York apartment..” She’d give birth to Lourdes Leon in October 1996. Many felt that her choice of a Spanish actor as her love interest in the music video alluded to Carlos Leon.

Overall, this is my favorite era of Madonna's music. I like a lot of her dance, dance-pop and other genres, but this period during which Babyface and David Foster produced her gave us straightforward, lovely ballads produced in ways that emphasized the warmth of her voice and her vocal performance abilities-her strengths. She doesn't have the most robust, dimensional voice, she doesn't have the greatest range or perfect pitch, her lyrics are not generally full of poetic grace, and she's not an extraordinary actor-and that's fine. She has these other strengths of vocal performance, emoting, lush warmth that come through in her delivery, and she exceeds the majority of artists in these senses. Songs like You'll See, Take a Bow, Secret, Bedtime Story, Human Nature, Forbidden Love all made the best possible use of her vocal instrument wnd performance talents. I admire her constant evolution but I do wish she'd revisit this approach because she gave us some beautiful music that doesn't sound dated.

Peppering her discography with ballads, starting early in her career, was a genius move for career longevity. Through the years, I've met many people who can't stand her because of her sexed up image, and controversial songs, but mention some of her ballads, (and she has quite a few to choose from) and they just melt.
