The other was a callous race of raiders and scavengers who, while capable of similar growth, simply lacked the ambition and camaraderie to do so. The raiders picked at the edges of the socials’ society with surgical precision, causing ripples through it and worsening the instability, before finding their perfect moment to tip the house of cards and seize control of things. After driving out the socials from their cities, the raiders slowly began to fill the empty space, only to run into a different problem; their tendency to simply lay eggs and abandon them was incompatible with their new domestic lifestyles, often violently so. They couldn’t trust the socials to raise their young, and there was no way in hell they’d do it themselves, and so they searched the former databases of the socials for a solution. It’s this which eventually leads them to Earth and its moms. 2. In accordance with the new characterization of the raiders, and in service of verisimilitude, the raiders don’t bother putting in much time to study individual human subjects and just *happen* to find Milo’s mom perfect. Instead, they just take large numbers of women from scattered locations across the globe, then scan their minds to see if they fit the appropriate psychological profile; then they extract whatever knowledge they can before disposing of them. 3. This one might not be that great, but I’ll toss it out there. You could maybe have it be a plot point that the influence of human mothers has made the raider society kinder and more cohesive over time, with tradition and a cultural pushback against this increased empathy being the main reasons why the crueler aspects of this still occur. Criticizing that sort of thing could then become part of the messaging of the movie. Somehow, the reason for the martians wanting to take his mom makes more sense in the CHILDREN'S BOOK. They want them because they grow from the ground and don't have moms, and they want moms to take them to soccer and ballet practice and playdates and pizza. And to clean and to cook, pack lunches and bandage boo-boos! Basically, they just saw moms on telescopes and decided they were very handy dandy and wanted to have them. But then when they see Milo's mom (take into account that book!Milo is like 6 or 7 at most) take off her helmet to save him and he begging for them to save her, they realize that it's not fair to take some kid's mom and return them to Earth.

The ending of this movie literally made me cry no matter how bad this movie was. I saw this movie with my mom and cried in her arms because I didn't want to lose her. I lost her two years ago to cancer. Life is shit.
I remember being traumatized watching this movie as a kid. I was at sleepaway camp in elementary school and everyone was super homesick. The leaders decided to have a movie night. But now sounds like an interesting thing to check out! I distinctly remember in the trailer we were looking at this moon and then it would zoom in and turn into a whole civilization with buildings, and we’d follow this young man boy kid thing with a ponytail and he’d be surfing or something. That’s all I remember before skipping every time 😂
Joa ! It really is and it’s my favorite! Disney should give it more recognition. But if they did they might live action it. So it’s better if it stays underrated rather than end up like The Lion King.
My grandmother brought me to see this movie in theaters, and she died later that year. I was 5 and it terrified me. But I still have some positive memories and feelings for this movie because of her taking me.
@@aaronlandry3934 They clearly didn't. I mean it's pretty obvious they took liberties all over the place with everything except for the basic story setup. I mean the character designs of the aliens are the most egregious by far. Whoever signed off on thinking they were cute or good should have not just been fired but blacklisted from Hollywood forever.
My five year old self was NOT emotionally prepared to watch a flash back about some kid's mom hooked into a weird machine and murdered via obliteration.
It’s pretty clear that the weird designs for the martians were caused because the mocap requires a character that’s very human-like to translate the motion well. But they just apparently deformed certain features to the extreme so that they looked alien enough while still being workable with mocap. And then they made the strange decision to give them very human hair and skin. It makes them look like deformed apes and it’s just uncanny.
I watched the movie in theaters when I was 10 and same. Gave me a similar feeling to Coraline, except I was too young to understand that that one sucks and the other doesn’t.
this movie actually scared the shit out of me when i was younger, both equally because of the aliens and of the fact that i thought mars was gonna steal my mfing mom
Same. I watched this movie when I was about 4 with my face like an inch away from the tv in the dark at night. When I saw the part when the mom got kidnapped I looked back at my mom sleeping and was terrified she was gonna get kidnapped
I saw it when I was like 10 at a friend's house and when my mom came to pick me up I went crying too her, I guess the movie helps kids appreciate there moms more?
I actually liked John Carter. You just have to recognise it for what it is: It's a tribute to a lost genre, old science fantasy from a time when the solar system was a much more mysterious place where anything might exist.
i remember this movie came out shortly after my mom died, and my dad thought it would be a good idea to take my siblings and i to go see it so we could get out of the house. needless to say it did not go well and we all left traumatized and in tears
Wow. I didn't have to see this. Glad it wasn't 'Mars needs Biological fathers' or I would have been just like you. Edit: To be fair, I probably wouldn't have known what biological meant, but I know I would ask.
Well the book looked a lot more charming and fun, while the movie tried to make goofy, light-hearted source material into a serious story, which 9 times out of 10 always backfires.
Oof that applied to like half of the movies out there. I can name a handful of poor renditions off the top of my head :( books to movies just don’t vibe well sometimes
@@gameplayer77801 yeah I've never read Artemis Fowl but aren't Disney making him into a superhero? When the entire point is that he's a Bond villain that happens to be a kid, and is an evil little shit?

Not to mention The Princess and The Frog didn't make ENOUGH money to satiate those greedy pigs, so they drop 2D animation in film entirely. F Disney seriously!
I remember watching a lot of the commercials this movie back then, they where airing the adds so often on Disney Channel that I got fed up and refused my parents offer to see it when it finally came to theaters. Glad to know I made the right choice
The thing that amazed me was that they go to Mars, meet an entirely different species, and yet they STILL manage to include a manic pixie dream girl character.
To be fair she watched primarly 60's American sitcoms. Knowing American culture is pretty present around the world it dosen't surprise me that what she stubbled upon and learned from.🤷
My mom just cries her eyes out and starts asking if she’s bad, she knows I'm weak for people who cry. Another thing she does is scream angrily and starts saying that she’ll die if I don't do “anything” even if I'm helping Yay my mom.
Remember watching this as a young child with my father. It absolutely traumatized me and we left half way through. I was crying so hard and I don’t know why. Seeing this reminded me of that memory and honestly I don’t blame 7 year old me
What I remember from the movie was that the aliens didn't knew how to raise their kids and basically where looking for a mom who was perfect for racing kids(Milo's mom) because she had a great balance. While the martians where looking for strict moms, they saw mothers give what their kids what they wanted, but when they saw Milo take out the trash, they said 'okay this is a strict mother' and decided to take her. I was very young but I remember this movie bc it traumatized me so much because of the needle scene. Just human experiments make me so uneasy and so idk.

i read the book as a kid and heres what i remember of the plot: this kid doesnt like his mom and doesnt really appreciate her. the martians dont have moms and theyre kinda sad, so they steal this kids mom. she drives them to their soccer practices and is nice to them and all that. its wholesome. then the kid is like "dang... i miss my mom" and i forgot how but he goes to mars and at first hes like "wtf, give me my mom back" and theyre like "but shes so nice! we dont have moms on mars" and he says "thats rough buddy" i forgot the ending i havent read the book in like 9 years but,,,, this movie is a disgrace.
I‘m crying is this actually the book? The movie went kinda sorta wild with the whole "we‘ll kill your mum cause you we don’t wanna raise children" thing
*99% of the complaints are just whiney youtube bs.* 1) "The concept not being like the original book means it is stupid." This is very shallow criticism. Shrek originally was just a children's book with simple story, where an ogre just wrecks stuff and then finds an ogre princess just as ugly as him and they marry. Shrek the movie was a completely different story, but no one complains about that! It seems hardly any of you know it is not uncommon practice for the American film industry to buy rights to various IP without using them for years, just in case of future lawsuits for plagiarism. So some film production buys multiple IPs that are loosely similar even when they have or may not have a central IP it is based on. 2) Claiming it was terribly stupid to send the message "Remember kids, listening to your mom gets them abducted!" That's not what they are sending at all. By that logic, Lion King is a terrible movie for children because it explicitly sends the message: "Remember kids, your uncles are evil people who want to kill your dad!" Besides, Gribble straight up says that's a terrible truth a kid like him had to cope with! So what even is the problem, then?
The weirdest thing about the animation to me is how every character holds their arms close to an A-pose while they idle. I think it must be something they do to avoid having to clean up clipping geometry later on, but it results in every character hover-handing their own hips when they could be leaning on a wall or slouching with their hands in their pockets or doing literally anything natural with their arms at idle. Come to think of it, this must be why these films tend to have exaggerated and awkward movement when two characters interact. Like they'll never actually hug or high-five, it's always awkward floating. It's physically uncomfortable to look at.
Exactly, like just make their arms a BIT lower my dudes, it's not that hard. The whole clipping thing is like okay yea, but their arms can go lower than that while still having nothing clip. Another thing that would help is to have the damn actors STANDING IN THAT POSE when calibrating Like damn
FINALLY! YOU MADE ANOTHER BAD-MOVIE REVIEW, NOT SOME FURRY FUEL! THE NATURAL ORDER HAS BEEN RESTORED. P.S.: 5:06 I don't... 5:10 I don't. P.S.: 20:28 I watched some of Jon Tron's videos recently, making this joke all the more hilarious.
Ive seen this before. I swear I have. It’s uncanny, so uncanny. I don’t recognize 99% of these scenes, except for the mom almost getting vaporized and stuff, which to me brings back memories of terror. I thought my mom was going to get vaporized one day because of this movie. I was terrified.
also... if the martians are native to mars... why do they need to breath earth-like air? Why do they have to wear the space helmets on the actual martian terrain? I think Ki's obsession with color is cute but I agree the attempted flirt relationship between her and Gribble is... uncomfortable at best. I have to say the mom waking up to be on mars and just screaming was hilarious. But its not even what I'd say is appropriate screaming. Shes just yelling, there's no actual feeling of surprise or fear or confusion that I would expect when waking up to find yourself on a completely different planet with no memory of how you got there.
There are some seems where the aliens are just smiling. And I'm just thinking... HOW DO THEY BREATHE WITH THEIR MOUTHS CLOSED?! They don't have noses! What?!
My high-school literature class discussed the animated Beowulf movie this company made. Their interpretation of Grendel’s mother became a running joke being “sexy Grendel’s mother”, because of how horrifically portrayed the character was.
for some reason when I was young, I remember enjoying this film. I wasn't afraid of the designs and I got emotionally sad when the mother sacrificed her helmet to her son. it made me cry :c
"He got the idea for 'Mars Needs Moms' when he saw his own 5-year old son Milo, throwing a tantrum at the dinner table, refusing to eat his broccoli-" Okay, I'm all for teaching kids about 'dealing with the consequences of your actions' and whatnot, but allowing this movie to be made? That's stone-cold.

I was one of the few who saw this movie in the theater when I was seven and actually used to think it was pretty intense lol. I don’t think I’d think that now though. I also couldn’t tell if it was animated or live action, it was so surreal for me back then.
@ThatOneCringeyAnimator yeah, I think the one reason that has been theorized is that Disney didn't like how expensive it was. Specifically, they didn't like how expensive deep-canvassing and its mixture of 2D and 3D was.
Mars needs moms: is a huge failure Arctic dogs: finally, a worthy opponent, our battle will be legendary! Edit: yes, I get it, this is an overused meme so this isn't funny or whatever. You don't have to remind me
YESsss. Same but I sill remembered it 7 years later and I still watch it now and then. It is a special movie because I watched it with my Grandma...😶❤😔
to be fair to the kid and the writing of the kid, I also acted like the kid when I was younger, and I think it's more realistic that as soon as his mom was taken away, he wanted her back. At least to me, If it SOMEHOW happened to me as a kid, I'd be bawling my eyes out during all of it cause I never actually wanted to not have a mom, I just wanted more freedom. I never hated my mom. The least realistic thing about the kid to me is that he isn't crying enough. lol
to be completely fair to the film, emotionally it got me pretty hard. the whole scene near the end where his mother removes her mask and puts it on him, breaking the lock to stop him removing it. When he realises and starts to call for his mommy? that got me weeping rivers. just put your self in his shoes and imagine as a kid coming to terms with your mother killing herself to let you live and you have to sit and watch her. just imagine that as a child.
Why does the scene sound so familiar? *remembers guardians of the galaxy 2* oh yeah. (i'm fully aware this came out first) Problem is though, the moments leading up to the scene or the events afterwards dont do it justice. It's a sad scene on its own but the build-up to that moment was lacking and they're both fine in the end anyway so the scene was kinda pointless. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Tearjerkers dont work if it has no impact on the character development. Milo wouldn't have any different feelings if the scene wasn't there because he already had regrets of what he said and did in a nano second of her getting kidnapped and realized how much he loved his mother and visa versa.
This is kinda sad, Disney was trying to bring something new and original and it flopped, I’m not saying that the movie was good, but at least they tried, now they don’t even take the risk of doing something new or original, for real, the last original movie from Disney Animation Studios was Moana... in 2016 and Zootopia too, Disney should take a leap of faith with new projects
That will be unlikely because they own like the 80% percent of worldwide entertainment. If one project flops... don't worry, they can take the money back by parasiting a FOX, Marvel... property. As a monopoly, they are barely risking anything. But yes, there is actual talent in Disney that deserves a chance to shine, you're spot on there!
something about the movies with this similar animation style(though it is usually ugly asf) really work for me because it seems to portray emotion so well. I wish this style was used more these days, I feel like it could be done better
Mars Meets Mom is the only motion cap movie I didn't care about. I liked the others. ESPECIALLY Polar Express. That movie is still my favorite Christmas movie.
Lemme just say this- That scene where the movie is showing how the moms are vaporized traumatized me so bad that I went into an existential crisis at the ripe age of 4 Edit: and rewatching the scene here made all of that "thought to be forgotten" trauma hit me like a truck
my aunt somehow thought this would be an okay movie to show to my younger cousin who's always been EXTREMELY sensitive and I think it traumatized her because she was crying so hard it made young me realize how messed up it was which left us both sobbing. still freaks me out when I think about it today :/ I should go hug my mom once quarentine is over
I remember when I was a kid, my mom visited for a day and read the book to my class and I sat up at the front with her during it and as she was introducing the book a classmate said something like “is it funny like the movie?” and kid me just super matter-of-factly responded instantly with “it’s sweet” I think my mom was quite proud of me in that moment lmfao
I disagree, Milo immediately wanting his mother back after she was taken is more realistic than him, as you put it, dragging his feet and not really wanting to get her back. His mom was abducted by aliens and might not be seen again and even at his age, I think he could understand the big picture and knew that no longer having to argue with his mother anymore was not a good trade off for losing her forever haha
True, but kids also can be quite stubborn...so I figure that the best thing would be to have him go to rescue her, but like refuse to admit that it's because she's right and he DOES need a mom. Basically, have him keep making really flimsy excuses, and like get annoyed when other characters suggest that he's actually missing his mom. "I can take care of myself. I don't need someone telling me what to do."
Same! I think it’s because the mo-cap in that movie is bad for mo-cap standards so it lacks the uncanny valley aspect. So it just looks like normal computer animation. Does that make sense?
I’m way too over attached to The Polar Express to call it creepy. I find the mo-cap to be much nicer than a lot of others, and it has a very beautiful story and music score.
My teacher always made us watch the weirdest, low budget movies in class. This was the one that I fully remembered because I actually found it pretty interesting.
God I remember watching this movie. At the end, my mom joked that she had to go to Mars now and pretended to go outside and walk away and I cried(I was around 6 at the time I think)
I remember watching this when it came out and my mother had to comfort me in theaters because I broke down sobbing at the helmet scene lol. Didn't think it lost *that* much money in the box office RIP
Prince of Egypt already had a good base to go off of, but Mars Needs Moms was based off a mere children's book, so it needed alot more originality to it.
And the martian kids were way worse than this human kid, so how exactly was she in any way fit to raise them? Just get some orphanage nun who will spank their asses.

@@lilymcelhannon3620
I like how the movie just hand waves it off like it's no big deal.

1) "The concept not being like the original book means it is stupid."
This is very shallow criticism.
2) Claiming it was terribly stupid to send the message "Remember kids, listening to your mom gets them abducted!"
That's not what they are sending at all.
By that logic, Lion King is a terrible movie for children because it explicitly sends the message:
"Remember kids, your uncles are evil people who want to kill your dad!"
Besides, Gribble straight up says that's a terrible truth a kid like him had to cope with!
It's because their anatomy is....
Unfit for mocap.
Exactly, like just make their arms a BIT lower my dudes, it's not that hard. The whole clipping thing is like okay yea, but their arms can go lower than that while still having nothing clip.
Another thing that would help is to have the damn actors STANDING IN THAT POSE when calibrating

Explain the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes where they met Martian Mickey and when Goofy went to Mars! Even if they are cartoon episodes...
also... if the martians are native to mars... why do they need to breath earth-like air? Why do they have to wear the space helmets on the actual martian terrain? I think Ki's obsession with color is cute but I agree the attempted flirt relationship between her and Gribble is... uncomfortable at best. I have to say the mom waking up to be on mars and just screaming was hilarious. But its not even what I'd say is appropriate screaming. Shes just yelling, there's no actual feeling of surprise or fear or confusion that I would expect when waking up to find yourself on a completely different planet with no memory of how you got there.

I actually LOVED this movie as a kid and completely forgot about it until now
YESsss. Same but I sill remembered it 7 years later and I still watch it now and then. It is a special movie because I watched it with my Grandma...😶❤😔
Omg same
SAME HERE!
I frogot the name and was forced to search "animated mars movie" I remember watching this as a kid😥
Same. It inspired me so much, especially the helmet scene
to be fair to the kid and the writing of the kid, I also acted like the kid when I was younger, and I think it's more realistic that as soon as his mom was taken away, he wanted her back.
Kherron201 damn, even your comment makes me cry
EXctly THATS EXACTLY WHY I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Precisely. The movie isn't bad in my opinion, it's just a very weird story line.
Gotta hug mom and cry into her after watching this movie lol
Why does the scene sound so familiar? *remembers guardians of the galaxy 2* oh yeah. (i'm fully aware this came out first)
Problem is though, the moments leading up to the scene or the events afterwards dont do it justice.
Wait you're telling me these *actual martians* need helmets to *breathe* on Mars, their *actual* home planet? Yeah, that makes sense sure.
I mean we will soon enough
Maybe their planet atmosphere is toxic
Seems legit
Gage Gault, Thanks china
Whut if they destroyed the atmosphere there?
Danna Gámez Castañeda honestly though!!
@@domingadoflaminga3961 actually most of the money they made was from the theme parks
Well now they’re trying live action remakes and we can see how that’s going for them...
It happened many times in the 90’s and 00’s
something about the movies with this similar animation style(though it is usually ugly asf) really work for me because it seems to portray emotion so well. I wish this style was used more these days, I feel like it could be done better
Their motion capture Christmas Carol is actually pretty damn good imo.
The Tintin movie is excellent.
Polar Express was gud too
I still watch monster house.. That movie slaps
Mars Meets Mom is the only motion cap movie I didn't care about. I liked the others. ESPECIALLY Polar Express. That movie is still my favorite Christmas movie.
Tintin is an amazing movie. I still watch that movie all the time
Lemme just say this-
That scene where the movie is showing how the moms are vaporized traumatized me so bad that I went into an existential crisis at the ripe age of 4
Edit: and rewatching the scene here made all of that "thought to be forgotten" trauma hit me like a truck
Same, except I was 10 (I was kind of a wuss as a child)
@@paulnovacek3715 bro I deadass cried and clinged to my mom for like a month or smth
I remember I could never watch them scenes, I use to wuss out and force my brother to skip through them every time we watched it.
my aunt somehow thought this would be an okay movie to show to my younger cousin who's always been EXTREMELY sensitive and I think it traumatized her because she was crying so hard it made young me realize how messed up it was which left us both sobbing. still freaks me out when I think about it today :/ I should go hug my mom once quarentine is over
My parents never took me, but I was 7 when it dropped. This video is the first of me "seeing" it at age 16 and dear GOD-
hard to swallow pills: Mars Needs Moms is a Disney movie
I'm so happy it's a Disney movie
@@Ghost-ce9tz wtf why are you happy?
Seen the movie...I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it.
@@heroessquad2019 same
@@DRUMCANJONES22 you 2 are heroes.
I remember when I was a kid, my mom visited for a day and read the book to my class and I sat up at the front with her during it and as she was introducing the book a classmate said something like “is it funny like the movie?” and kid me just super matter-of-factly responded instantly with “it’s sweet”
I think my mom was quite proud of me in that moment lmfao
I disagree, Milo immediately wanting his mother back after she was taken is more realistic than him, as you put it, dragging his feet and not really wanting to get her back. His mom was abducted by aliens and might not be seen again and even at his age, I think he could understand the big picture and knew that no longer having to argue with his mother anymore was not a good trade off for losing her forever haha
Finally someone agrees with me the movie shows how much a child realizes how much their mums means to them I guess this youtuber forgotten this
True, but kids also can be quite stubborn...so I figure that the best thing would be to have him go to rescue her, but like refuse to admit that it's because she's right and he DOES need a mom.
Basically, have him keep making really flimsy excuses, and like get annoyed when other characters suggest that he's actually missing his mom.
"I can take care of myself. I don't need someone telling me what to do."
@@dr.altoclef9255 Exactly, that would probably be the most realistic lol
I don't care how big of a fight it was you'd be worried about them. But the stupidity of a child to run after the fucking space ship is golden

I was today years old when I found out Monster House was a mo-cap movie...
Lar Rackell me too
Lar Rackell Same
Lol yes
Same! I think it’s because the mo-cap in that movie is bad for mo-cap standards so it lacks the uncanny valley aspect. So it just looks like normal computer animation. Does that make sense?
Same
I’m way too over attached to The Polar Express to call it creepy. I find the mo-cap to be much nicer than a lot of others, and it has a very beautiful story and music score.
Yes. That movie was my favorite Christmas movie. Like I wanted to be that kid and it felt magical to me.
Same. :)
I loved it!
I guess that's why I think it's creepy cause I never was attached to that movie nor did I ever like it.
Yes but those aliens DISGUSTING UGLY, JonTron: THAT WAS A LOAD OF SHIT
My teacher always made us watch the weirdest, low budget movies in class. This was the one that I fully remembered because I actually found it pretty interesting.
This movie is literally The Polar Express' Dead Beat Cousin.
Okay hold up-
Nice
Except polar express looks good in comparison, and is actually a good movie.

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius did basically this exact same story much better
Josué Vicioso And that was ten years before this movie even came out.

Director: Prince of Egypt
Same Director: Mars Needs Moms
How.
Good direction can't save a poor concept for a film
Or in this case, the uncanny Valley
*WHAT!?*
Prince of Egypt already had a good base to go off of, but Mars Needs Moms was based off a mere children's book, so it needed alot more originality to it.
Dart Devious guess chase bible stories are more interesting lmao
If mom can’t even control her brat then why was she chosen
Because in theory, she was a fine mom and she wouldn't be missed.
@@10Raccoon by what metric does she make a fine mom I wonder?
