    the wicked wheel can be installed on a 7.3 without removing the turbo --- but since it was removed , I think I would have put a rebuild kit in it too know what I have -- I have removed the butterfly in the EB (don't need fancy store bought by-pass) -- or turn it into exhaust brake (easy to do)

    I must be part of the 1% because there was zero oil on my pedestal and zero scaling inside my 7.3 turbo despite 250k miles of service. I thank you for this very in-depth and helpful tutorial.

    Keeps saying its lighter, but never shows it on a grams scale. Billet is heavier in most cases. Also, the stock wheel made torque quicker in the dyno graph. Food for thought

    • @Subi_doo
      @Subi_doo 3 роки тому +3

      That because the rotating mass works with torque. Example, a billet flywheel with less rotating mass will or should create more top end HP, but will loose on low end torque. HOWEVER, I’m not sure why a lightened turbine wheels, would loose torque…. Maybe the same principals applies. Lighter isnt always better… the turbo wheel may be able to spin faster aiding with quicker spool up, but maybe to fast to be fully efficient. Got to find that perfect balance

    • @marictaylor753

      Different video weighed the wheels and it is actually lighter.

    • @ChrisLesmerises
      @ChrisLesmerises 2 роки тому +3

      No sir. More Mass equals more momentum to overcome equals slower spool. You've applied a good logic to the wrong physics.
      By "rotating Mass works with torque" you seem to to be onto something with the idea of a certain conservation of rotational momentum.... but the impeller isn't moving on a plane that makes it relevant.

In reviewing this video and considering past towing habits, e.g., pulling a 6% grade in tow haul mode at 2,500 RPM I find it hard to believe adding 15 HP and 20 FPT will make a significant difference in power? Am I wrong?

    • @impleasen
      @impleasen 2 роки тому +6

      Barely noticeable its more in your head than anything else. Also from the factory the rotating assembly is either balanced as a whole unit or balanced individually. When you remove the factory wheel and install a lighter wheel it will throw the balance of the turbo off. Can you just throw a wheel on there yes you sure can but for 40 bucks you should definitely have the unit rebalaced. Plus their is a compressor cover o ring you should replace and a compressor outlet o ring you should replace. And if you yank the whole thing out you should just have the whole thing rebuilt.

The suv is stock I don’t have any modifications to the engine or the transmission at all. I watched some videos that you guys posted on UA-cam about installing a wicked wheel and edge Evo performance chip. Can you please let me know which wicked wheel do I need for my excursion and a chip performance??

      You're welcome! We had a nice gain in turbo responsiveness with the WW and a noticeable drop in EGT’s. Any power programmer is going to help you as well with adding efficiency to the engine that will translate to gain in fuel economy and more power. All of these within reason of course but its just a different animal especially with the Excursion.

    IMHO first thing to check would be Turbo shaft end and x y axis wobble. I have been set to help more then one hommy and even one of my own that had zero thrust washer. The turbo shaft easily slid back and forth enough to hit the housing yet never did and despite this the piston ring oil seals should have been leaking but never had. Extremely well made turbo Garrett builds. Regardless I will argue that an impact wrench tapped for speed will take the nut right off the turbo shaft.
    To reinstall simply thread the nut back on against the compressor wheel completely! Then proceed to on tap the rockin knocker switch once or twice. put the cover back on being aware of the proper orientation and that the wheel is not bound. it will get tighter and tighter as you rock those ww launches and the old merge past everyone slip road 0-75 sprints. The faster you drive the compressor wheel will easily apply skoocum in. lbs as greater pressure differential when air is being compressed increases.

      The factory Garrett gtp38 turbo is a pretty beefy unit. Given that this uses the factory wastegate spring, it's probably spinning slower than the factory compressor wheel. It would be nice to have it balanced but there is nothing here to make me think it would be any harder on parts than the stock wheel.

    Getting air thru a diesel is important. This is a gain, but not as graphic as I thought it would be. I am looking for those 50 to 80 lb/ft increases on a single effort. Other than a tuner that changes fuel curve, injector pulse width, timing, and boost, what else is available? All the little additions add up and support the things like a wicked wheel. I did exhaust and air filter mods first, then a tuner. I am ok with where my truck is at but would like another 50 to 80 ft/lbs at the rear wheels. Iam unsure of a wicked wheel is the next right choice. I know an intercooler on my OBS would be smart in the durability department, but for the cost and time, what would I gain? Is there something else I could do for half the $$s and find the gain I am looking for. 122,000 miles on the one in the Avatar. I don't work it hard except the occasional towing maybe every 3 to 4 years. Earlier this year it was Gross Weight of 28,600 for 75 miles. I did a 38xxx 20 miles once 7 years ago. It handled it but never again will I do that. 55 on the highway was plenty in about every respect. I watch temps like a hawk.

      We kept the stock wastegate and cover on this particular truck, but the WW made a big difference in power in the trucks sweet spot. The cover upgrades and wastegate upgrades too help to keep the truck from surging and to keep the power where you need it on the top end.

      Correction factor must be added in, because at different environments/temperatures the engine will make different power. Temperature affects things the most, then altitude, then humidity. All three change how much a power will make. In this case, most likely what changed was temperature. If you notice at the before dyno runs 2:50, the temperature was 83degree, then later the temperature was 90degree 20:00. The difference due to just the temperature was 4% change in power.

      We did not monitor EGT’s on this dyno run, but with the increase of air moved with the wicked wheel we should see a slight EGT decrease.

    • @copperkeyracing6167
      @copperkeyracing6167 4 роки тому

      @@thoroughbreddiesel Sounds backwards to me. Any time you add more airflow, without the sensors (like an intake sensor) able to detect changes and compensate, then you get a leaner burn. A leaner burn (more air, less fuel) causes heat to build up in the engine, which causes exhaust gas temperatures to increase. The whole point of an EGT sensor is to tell you in a quick and dirty way, if the engine is burning too hot, which tells you how the air-fuel ratio is. Too lean, bye bye engine.
      What we really want to know is, does the engine need an adjustment to the fuel settings, aka does it need a tune? An intake change usually does not need a tune. Internals on an engine and turbo changes usually does need a tune.
