2wd or 4wd? I cant really see much benefit from it. Depending how much you're towing, it's probably more economical to re-gear or just turn off the overdrive.
That strictly diesel dipstick adapter is way too expensive for my blood. Paid $85 for a weld in adapter. Never have to worry about o rings wearing out 👌
Where did you guys score the frame to engine cradle gussets?? I haven't been able to find the parts separately like you can for the coil buckets or radius arm brackets.
Id like to see dyno sheets of 500hp on a stock style turbo. should have gone with a t4. KC turbos are good but its still just makeup on a stock frame charger.
Just up pipes. I considered the exhaust manifolds, but chose to leave them alone since weren't leaking. I don't think leaks are all that common on them.
@@klikliks_service some definitely start to leak. But we focused on needed upgrades and known wear items and failure points on the truck, especially things that can leave you on the side of the road or trail. The exhaust manifolds didn't fall into any of those categories. If a manifold starts to leak, it wont put us out of commission, and it can be repaired in the truck, so I chose not to chance snapping any bolts to fix something that wasn't broken. Same goes for the oil pan; gasket wasn't leaking, so I choice not to possibly introduce a leak with an install error. Might regret both of those choices in the future, but I had to draw the line somewhere.
A good place to start is the exhaust and tuning. I have a 4” MBRP that I’m very pleased with. Had one on my 2002 F250 also. Hydra tuner is the way to go.

Love your show I love the old 7.3 powerstroke Diesel I'm getting me another one and am looking for some good ideas for my first power mods for this old girl any suggestions would be great thanks.
Tuning and a 4” exhaust are your cheapest horsepower. If your injectors are worn, get some Full Force Diesel Stage 1.5 injectors. It’ll feel like an entirely different truck, and you don’t need any additional supporting mods. Best bang for the buck!
@@jaminseat6701 thanks it just had new injectors installed and glow plugs as well but that's a great idea I've owned a 94 7.3 and now I have a 04 6.0 and now I'm buying a 01 F350 7.3 and am as excited as a little kid again can't wait to get it in the shop and give it a good once over.
My EX just needed 2 new injectors so I bit the bullet and upgraded to the single shot. Still have a ways to go but 500hp/1000ft are within sight. So happy except for that sharp pain in my wallet.
@@Miniaturehorseexpress it might be making 500 horsepower to the crank, but definitely not making 500rwhp. Then again, I didn't hear them claim to make 500 to the wheels.
I have a 1993 f350 7.3 idi non turbo. Automatic Rwd. Question: is it possible to install a turbo like that on that engine. Increase power to 500 to 600?
It's hard enough to make 500HP with a 7.3 PSD, doubt it'd be economical to do with an IDI (but I know very little about a 7.3 IDI except it's all mechanical, non-HEUI injectors). 12 Valve Swap?!?!
@@martinmartin3368 I really have no idea. Maybe the turbocharged 7.3 IDI components will bolt on. HP potential is going to be limited by how much fuel your injectors will flow and how much timing advance you can run, that’s applicable to every diesel. And I have no idea about that stuff as it relates to a 7.3 IDI.
Yes. You should unbolt the converter from the flex plate before you separate the engine from the trans. If you separate the engine and trans or reassemble with the converter and the flex plate bolted together, you can wreck the pump in the transmission.
I have a stock 97 utility bed work truck. Ts6 switch what down pipe would you recommend and other mods? I’ve increased fuel pressure but this is my daily work truck as well.
Busted Knuckle Films lol I thought it was 329000 when I bought it 2 years ago but it may have been 829000 because it just rolled and now I’m at 302624 less then I bought it. So I read that ford doesn’t have the last two dashes on their odometers so I might be at 902624 lol. It runs great I do lose oil I believe the injector seals are letting oil by
Give Full Forces Diesel or Strictly Diesel a call. They can give you great recommendations for your application. They both gave me considerable assistance on this build.
They read slightly higher than before under most conditions. But nothing significant. And the Max EGTs don't really register any higher than they did when it was a tuned, stock, engine. Between the upgraded turbo, intercooler, and other intake path upgrades, it moves plenty of cool air.
I purposely don’t add it all together. Nothing good could come from that. There’s probably $15-$20k under the hood and quadruple that in the entire truck. It’s a financially irresponsible endeavor. 🤓
The rear main seal on a 7.3L rarely leaks. The truck has spent its entire life in Georgia, so there is no rot on the pan or any leaks. Taking it off to reseal it would just introduce the chance for a leak where one didn’t previously exist.
I have a stock turbo with better internals pushing 32psi plus and stage 1.5 sticks and dusty Holgate tunes and about 4,000 miles after all the work I floated a valve. Its better to do them now while you only have to do valves instead of when its to late and have to do a piston to. I only have 164,000 miles on the truck. Floating a valve is common in the 7.3 when pushing anything more then 25psi of boost. Irate diesel sells a nice after market stiffer spring. It can be done with the heads on the truck too, so just be careful, those stock springs don't like high boost.
@@fatfairlane I’ve never heard of anyone needing heavier valve springs at 40psi and 3000rpm. I’m not saying you didn’t experience an issue, but I don’t think it’s common.
Best be handy and have a good set of tools. They are robust and reliable, but things are going to need repair and replacement. Oil leaks, door locks, brakes... they’ll all need attention.

Where did you get the gusset for the frame reinforcement? Part number or anything. Im doing the coil spring swap too.
cut it off a newer truck in the junkyard
Busted Knuckle Films cheers, great videos
I took them off my donor chassis
Jamin Seat, I have a half cut of a chassis, ill check it out. Iv’e got a CaConversions 11-16 allison swap coming. Stock converter checked out and ate my tranny. You guys are good entertainment.
Mitch 7.3 powerstroke thanks! Good luck with the build.
I swear half the time i hear "hank hill" lmao
He’s my 3rd cousin, twice removed.
DAMMIT BOBBY!
I was just wondering about this project.
It's well underway! Already enjoying those new Horsepressures!
worth the wait!
Man wish I seen thins before I changed my injectors... just got done... 200 more could have got them
They have been some good ones
i know this is off topic BUT,, has anyone used Gear-vendors setup for towing with a Excursion?
Haven't heard of anyone doing that.
2wd or 4wd? I cant really see much benefit from it. Depending how much you're towing, it's probably more economical to re-gear or just turn off the overdrive.
Did you all cut the frame gussets out of another truck or are they available for purchase somewhere
cut off junkyard frame
I took them off the donor frame. I doubt you can purchase them. You could fab some up workout too much fuss.
What intake plemum did you guys use i cant tell by the video and its not listed in the description
It’s from Riff Raff. We go over it in the next video.
@@jaminseat6701 ok thanks
Riff Raff Billet FTW!
That strictly diesel dipstick adapter is way too expensive for my blood. Paid $85 for a weld in adapter. Never have to worry about o rings wearing out 👌
Good idear!
That is one way to do it.
Hey what would be the best after market and stick parts to rebuild a zf5 transmission to hold almost 800horse power 1995 f250 xlt 7.3 powerstroke
I would have someone build it for those specs
Replace with an automatic! Contrary to popular belief, automatics can be built to hold much more power than a manual.
Where did you guys score the frame to engine cradle gussets?? I haven't been able to find the parts separately like you can for the coil buckets or radius arm brackets.
cut them off at the junk yard
I cut them off the donor frame.
Id like to see dyno sheets of 500hp on a stock style turbo. should have gone with a t4. KC turbos are good but its still just makeup on a stock frame charger.
There is a link in the description to KC's setup this way making 500 on the dyno...
See link in description...
So did you reseal the exhaust manifolds or just do up pipes? I think you would be money ahead if you did them.
Just up pipes. I considered the exhaust manifolds, but chose to leave them alone since weren't leaking. I don't think leaks are all that common on them.
good choice
Mine leaked on my truck at 285k
Makes sense. You dropped a lot cash on it.
I have a 7.3 and looking to up grade my truck. Something like you are doing now.
A good place to start is the exhaust and tuning. I have a 4” MBRP that I’m very pleased with. Had one on my 2002 F250 also. Hydra tuner is the way to go.
what he said
Love the video you guys are extremely knowledgeable looks like you have a fantastic team good friends you working with Dylan is forest with part one of the Towerlander project what was the parts cost roughly? The reason I ask is i got a 94 f350 7.3 turbo di I travel alot with a 40ft camper I need to do a complete rebuild including a new rear end and resleveing new heads and xray the block.
Price list is completely different on the old 7.3s
@@BustedKnuckleVideo by how much
No idea man. Never worked on a pre-Powerstroke 7.3.
Ha…love the build, but I happened to look at the cost of the Topside Creeper…four years ago it was $200, now it’s $350+ 😂
inflation...
Any way to buy the duel sending unit?
Call Strictly Diesel. They may be willing to hook you up. If not, they might be able to tell you how long until it’s available. Be sure to tell them we sent you.
It is a pretty legit setup
My old 7.3 with 1.5s was awesome
Don't miss Part 2 where we Rip on this thing with over 500HP!
ua-cam.com/video/mjbicPVwBqU/v-deo.html
How about posting a dyno video of the actual power it makes 👍
My EX just needed 2 new injectors so I bit the bullet and upgraded to the single shot. Still have a ways to go but 500hp/1000ft are within sight. So happy except for that sharp pain in my wallet.
@@Miniaturehorseexpress it might be making 500 horsepower to the crank, but definitely not making 500rwhp. Then again, I didn't hear them claim to make 500 to the wheels.
@@chancesteffens5456 why do you think that? Dyno results are linked in the description for an identical setup.
@@jaminseat6701 what would it take to put that turbo on the 7.3 idi? And what horsepower could I expect with the turbo?
@@martinmartin3368 I really have no idea. Maybe the turbocharged 7.3 IDI components will bolt on. HP potential is going to be limited by how much fuel your injectors will flow and how much timing advance you can run, that’s applicable to every diesel. And I have no idea about that stuff as it relates to a 7.3 IDI.
@@jaminseat6701 ok thanks
there are lots of people that build older 7.3s
I have an 2001 7.3 do I need to take the the converter out separate from flex plate. Mine came off with mine.
Yes. You should unbolt the converter from the flex plate before you separate the engine from the trans. If you separate the engine and trans or reassemble with the converter and the flex plate bolted together, you can wreck the pump in the transmission.
@@jaminseat6701 thanks man
good tip
what gears are you running ?????
It’s on this video ua-cam.com/video/mkd_VOoLev8/v-deo.html
I have a stock 97 utility bed work truck. Ts6 switch what down pipe would you recommend and other mods? I’ve increased fuel pressure but this is my daily work truck as well.
how many miles on it? Injectors might be a good idea
It runs great I do lose oil I believe the injector seals are letting oil by
Injectors is what I would do next then.
Give Full Forces Diesel or Strictly Diesel a call. They can give you great recommendations for your application. They both gave me considerable assistance on this build.
Whats your egt at with the bigger injectors?
egts are just fine thanks to the turbo moving more air
They read slightly higher than before under most conditions. But nothing significant. And the Max EGTs don't really register any higher than they did when it was a tuned, stock, engine. Between the upgraded turbo, intercooler, and other intake path upgrades, it moves plenty of cool air.
So what was the grand total on the project I’m curious because I’m looking to do the same
I purposely don’t add it all together. Nothing good could come from that. There’s probably $15-$20k under the hood and quadruple that in the entire truck. It’s a financially irresponsible endeavor. 🤓
most expensivest....
Can one buy the fuel pump set up! Or parts list
Every part is linked in the description 👍
sure can
Why didn’t you reseal the oil pan and rear main?
no need
The rear main seal on a 7.3L rarely leaks. The truck has spent its entire life in Georgia, so there is no rot on the pan or any leaks. Taking it off to reseal it would just introduce the chance for a leak where one didn’t previously exist.
Man last week I had to pull mine just to change the oil thats the shitty thing about owning a 7.3 powerstoke AMG
to change the oil?
Pull the engine?
How big of an engine hoist do you need to pull the 7.3L?
it isn't crazy heavy
I think it was rated at a ton maybe 🤷🏻♂️. It takes a robust engine stand!
You need to upgrade the valve springs to a stiffer spring or your gonna float a valve
interesting, KC turbos have the same build sheet and didn't do that and haven't had an issue.
@@fatfairlane you floated a valve or you dropped a valve?
@@jaminseat6701 floated, the boost was to much for the stock springs and it stayed open just a little. It happened on 3 cylinders.
@@fatfairlane I’ve never heard of anyone needing heavier valve springs at 40psi and 3000rpm. I’m not saying you didn’t experience an issue, but I don’t think it’s common.
Great video! When is the final video gonna upload? Dyno?
Final? This is just the beginning.
No Dyno pulls without a transmission build first.
part 2 should be out later this week.
I’m looking to buy a 2001 7.3 with 226,000 miles 4x4 it’s in okay shape needs some tlc
Best be handy and have a good set of tools. They are robust and reliable, but things are going to need repair and replacement. Oil leaks, door locks, brakes... they’ll all need attention.
It probably needs injectors also.
Great Diesel trucks to learn to work on.
Watch the 2500psi that runs through the fuel lines/engine
Just about everything is upgraded. What exact part of the system are you referring to?
These use high pressure oil systems to operate the injectors, and don't hold residual pressure, so there is no danger during disassembly
Busted Knuckle Films mostly the diesel Systems
SPG Garage yeah I know I mean when it’s in the car
how much for something like this? im interested i have a 7.3
All the items are in the description we don't do work for hire
I barely have enough time to turn wrenches on my own rigs!
How much would something like this cost if I wanted to hire you guys out? I have a 7.3 excursion myself
1 Million Dollars.....We don't do work for hire.
I’d consider it for $1 million 😉
