    Your Zebra Plecos (Hypancistrus zebra, L046) are so beautiful! I purchased two in the early 90’s ($75 each from a woman in NYCity), and kept them for a year in a 20 gallon on our enormous kitchen peninsula...such lovely fish, and when they had settled in, they would even ramble about during the day! Their tank companions were 2 Pearl Gouramis (male/female), Zebra Danios, Cardinal Tetras. Bi-weekly water changes, good current flow, 80 degrees temp, mixed carnivore and pleco food, plus little caves seemed to keep them happy and healthy. When my husband received orders, I found them a good home with a young man who was thrilled to have them, since transporting them across the country would
    be impractical. Sigh...keeping fish jewels 💎 and military life just do not mix. 🇺🇸

    My favourite pleco you keep us definitely the l134. Have a group of 12 inchlings myself and find they are more active feeders than my l46, l129 or l106. If you’re looking for something interesting and affordable to keep I highly recommend the l106. They run about $30 a piece in Ontario and are generally WC. Top out around 5” and similar mannerisms to the l134.

    • @TMAquatics
      @TMAquatics  5 років тому

      Some people have L134’s spawning year around. I suspect it may have something to do with wild caught v.s. tank raised. 🤷‍♂️. Just a theory. My group is also very young and this was their first breeding season. Perhaps they’ll be more consistent as they age?

    Nice setup :) With a nice selection of different Hypostominae. There are some rarer Ancistrus spp. around which can be a challenge to breed such as Ancistrus ranunculus, their care is some what similar to Hypancistrus spp. in high flow, higher temperatures but can be a real challenge to acclimatise to a tank and prefer a more meaty diet then most Ancistrus spp.

I assume their doing good i feed plenty and have not seen any bodies. Love plecos. Curious...did you ever lose a whole bunch of juveniles at one time with no apparent reason? I recently did and am mystified. The adults in the tank were fine and still are...water parameters were perfect (30% water changes twice a week in a 29 gallon....the babies just all went from fine to dead within 24 hours. Only other fish in the tank were the parent bristlenose and maybe 8 guppies. And they are all just fine. The babies ate zucchini and algae disks and small amounts of brine shrimp and blood worms were in the tank though I don't know if the babies ate them. I never noticed anything on them like ick, though they had a little white filmy stuff on the bodies when I found them dead. Keep in mind that the parents and no other fish showed this white stuff. The bodies looked like any fish body after being dead 24 hours in a tank. Ever heard of anything like this? Really made me sick. Never have had this happen.

      Depending on size, baby plecos can choke on bloodworms. But no, never experienced anything like that. Truly unfortunate.

    I have two different types of plecos in my 55 gallon. I was wondering if all plecos can be sexed the same and if they can breed with eachother? One is 5 inches another is 7 inches

      Most plecos can be easily sexed by their body shape once they are sexually mature, as well as venting if you know what to look for. Some plecos can also be sexed by the facial or body odontodes. And others by head shape. Plecos of the same genus can potentially hybridize.

    Has anyone ever bred Yellow Rubber plecos? And are there more than one species of yellow pleco, and do they get more or less black on them as they grow? Thanks, just getting into plecos.

    Hi Tom I have 14 adult Leopards all ready to breed. All are around the 3 year old mark. Some are wild and others tank bread. I feed on Tetra Prima and wafers. Any tips on how to kick off the breeding?

      Cold water changes with pure RO. This drops the TDS and the tank temp 4-5 degrees Fahrenheit. Follow with a feeding of blood worms. If you can time this with a low pressure front, that will help. If it doesn’t work, rinse and repeat and eventually Mother Nature does its job. Patience though, Frogs are known to breed in seasons. My group is active Nov-April.

    Are watering spikes good for BN Plecos?

      They work fine. They come in different sizes so you need to make sure to get the right size. The spikes my bushy nose use are around 4.2 cm ID.
