- Lots of covers of this song out there in UA-cam land, but no videos teaching it...UNTIL NOW! If you have any questions or need clarification, just comment and I'll get back to you as quick as I can. Hopefully this is helpful. Pardon the screw ups, its tough to keep track when you're breaking a song down that you're used to playing all at once.
I've been loving this song for years and wake up to it every morning as an alarm on my phone. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to help people like me and hundreds of others to play it for themselves.
God you really have to rise above it when you bother to help people by putting something up on here, thanks for doing this Joe I really appreciate it.
cool gonna use all of that... I agree with you wish some one like you was around when I was starting..50 years ago. Thanks for sharing, its what picken is all about, God bless ya young man.
THANK YOU JOE! I know this was 9 years ago, but just so you know there are people like me watching and appreciating!!!!
You have a special knack for clear and to-the-point explanation. I'll look for you again on UA-cam. Thanks.
So many covers and tutorials for the vocal version and not enough of the instrumental. Thank you.
Good teaching job, Joe. Some people, emphasis on some, need to realize that the Union Station Version is quite a bit different and more of a modern bluegrass tune than the old bluesy, folk-style that Norman Blake performs. Bearing this in mind one will appreciate Joe's efforts a lot more. Yes, you could capo it. Joe is showing this song in a more basic version. I appreciate his efforts and want to learn the Norman Blake style as well as the Union Station (Soggy Bottom Boys) version. Thanks.
mucking around with those chords and licks is divine. thanks man
Thanks for vid man. As a pilot I especially appreciated the "breaks" and "rolls" verbiage.
I learned to rock this tune out because of this video. Been playing it for years now. Thanks man!
This song was "popularized by the Stanley Brothers on Columbia 20816, Recorded 1950, Released May 1951." Then re-recorded in 1959 on King Records by the Stanley Brothers (Carter and Ralph). {This information taken from Wikipedia} Ralph Stanley popularized this song and had been singing it for 50 years before the O Brother Movie came out. (Yes, 50 years) Ralph Stanley was the one singing "O Death" also in the movie O Brother for those of you who don't know.
Awesome info thanks
I just downloaded this version from the movie track off i tunes about a week ago because I figured it would be easy to learn. After a few days of struggling I found this lesson and It all make sense now. Awesome lesson! Thanks for posting!

Also love your movies lolol fr though appreciate you a bunch. Watched this video a million times for a long time and just greatly appreciate you!!!
You played very well, Joe. You teach guitar like my grandfather, Norman Blake, does. Well done!
Thanks for posting this AWESOME video!!!! Very well explained....I thought this song would take me a lot longer to learn, Have a good one and thanks!!!!
Not a chance of my learning this song with only the video but found a good tab, and learned lots of tips too. Definitely an advanced lesson
That's a very beautiful guitar. Nice vidja.
Thank you, been playing it a tad different but this version is great. To all the negative comments on here, when you place informative lessons such as the on here then criticise this gentleman's effort.
Awesome! Just what I've been looking for. Thanks so much!
GREAT JOB, BUDDY!! VERY MUCH appreciated!!
Excellent stuff thanks so your explanation and help with this little beauty!
Very nicely done, thanks for taking the time.

@1USAFVET Thanks! Glad I could help! That's a Washburn D-10 ceq/sb I just picked up used a few weeks ago, I'm loving playing it.
thanks for making the effort Joe.
Thanks for trying to teach this one, very slowly I am getting some things down to practice. Sounds like a little George Shuffler style picking which is great as I have already been practicing that. I have been looking for weeks for someone on You Tube to teach this. Thanks!.
Very funny and simple... Thank you Joe !
PS : nice guitar
Thanks a lot bro..I've been working on this piece for a while now. I've gotten pretty far on my own but there were some parts that I was stuck on. Again, thanks.

Great video! Thanks :)
Let's go Buffalo! Solid lesson too, helped me figure it out and didnt just give me stuff I can read in tabs
41 dislikes... I love and hate youtube at the same time.... Anyway,, thanks for the post man... good job
I have been wanting to learn this song for a long time, but tabs are hard to follow because they don't show rhythm. So I really appreciate the video. I would love to see one for Norman Blake's Big Rock Candy Mountain ;)
thanks for this video
God bless.
It helped. Thanks.
@Joemackus A tab in the video might be useful because some parts are a bit confusing, but great video anyway, wanted to learn this song for so much time!
This is the song that got my interested in trying to learn (like my brother, dad, pap-pa, and bro-in-law.) being a beginner is frustrating. ;-)
good job bro
It's a bummer to see this kind of negativity in response to somebody who was just trying to help other people learn. You're a good musician man, I checked your videos. All we can all do is try, and your attitude is pretty discouraging. I'm sorry I got the name wrong. On the O Brother soundtrack, Hartford has a rendition, and Norman Blake has a rendition. I never credited either of them for writing it, just for the rendition. But thanks for the vote of confidence.
Don't know where you are at these days but just wanted to say this video is super helpful to me today
Ur guitar is absolutely gorgeous
@Grumlouze Great job! Do you have more?
thanks for sharing mouth
BUFFALO SABRES! im a sabres fan, i live in Sardinia, its just south of buffalo. out by springville
@Grumlouze Sorry man, I don't have the tabs for this one, I just picked it up by ear. I think there's a tab book available for the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack though.
Thanks for the video man ! Great stuff !
Would it be possible to get the tab you're playing ?
Awesome tutorial how. I’ve been searching for a while but I need your help on the transition from 6:47
You lost me at A. But I'm a newb and hope to play this song as well as you some day. Thanks bruh!
thank you! any chance of the walk the line one aswell? id well appreciate it!
What type of guitar r u playing, also great videos helped me alot
Thanks sibling.
its called lute hole they make them out of wood or solid rubber and like joe said there for suppressing feedback
Thanks bud
Why all the negative comments? Thanks for this Joe...
I'm a little slow here, I'm not getting it just after the D chord when you go back up to C. just a few notes away from I GOT it.
Thanks a lot in advance
If you want to play more of a O brother where art thou style try capo on 3rd fret and play from there.
Thanks for the lesson. Curious, what covers the sound hole?
Joemackus, thanks for posting video! Nice guitar , good instruction. Pay no mind to people like Funkabillypete. He is a very sad man. He is definitly an ignorant hick. Probably does his cousin. I will let ya know when I am done learning song. Always have wanted to play it. And keep on the sunnyside. Pay no mind to those who try to discourage!!! amen
Its like a musical rorschach test! I hear Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I do" at 4:59!
Go Sabres
@wba731 it is its the instrumental
That's a feedback reducer. It's an acoustic electric.
rock on dude im gonna play it through my jack hammer and see what happens
Great stuff, but i prefer DAGDAD tuning, sounds a lot bluesier, but this is cool, don't have to lose time on tuning :)
Yeah probably, i had actually been having problems with that guitar around that time
i think it's roscoe holcolm but i want the how to dan tyminski
do you have the song in tab formula,(notation)..thanks..
It's just standard tuning actually.
WHAT TUNING IS USED
This song goes back far earlier than Norman Blake but you're just talking about the particular instrumental you're using, yes?
Is your guitar is DADGAD or standard tuning?
Haha you're totally right
Do you have tablature for this at all?
There is a pause button
Thumbs up McCarthy, lets guide funkabillypete to look up Recommended Reading for Asshats on Yankee Preppers channel. Its hilarious!
