Awe, I'm so grateful for you as well!! Watching your pod feels like chatting with a good friend about all the amazing yarn-y joy, and I'm so here for it!
Love your quilt cardigan! I put a locking stitch marker every 10 rows on sleeves or socks or anything I need to have the same number of rows. Game changer.
I'm a cowl girl for cold Iowa weather , so I'm suggesting the cowl in highlighter yellow/blue. Make it your own simple colorwork pattern just to keep the creative juices flowing . Enjoy your family , the conversations , food, and your cowl will be a memory of the time spent together. Many thanks for podcasting,, you make my day as well.
Happy Thanksgiving. The happiness and joy you get from your knitting projects is infectious and I am thankful that you choose to share it through your podcasts.
You are far from alone when it comes to the energy put forward toward travel knitting selection! My go to is a plain sock pattern with an interesting yarn. Have a great holiday and thank you for these videos. I knit along to these often!
I agree! That hat alone will be boring, but perfect if you're visiting with family. The cowl is gorgeous (pick the blue and neon--stunning!!). I imagine you tucked in at the end of a day watching that chart come to life. Happy Thanksgiving!!! There is nothing cheesy about sharing gratitude for the people in our lives and the things that bring us joy. We love you Lena!!
I’m a new knitter and I feel the same way already about travel knitting! I agree with your blue linen quill and the highlighter yellow. Thanks to YOU,Lena, for being here for all of us. I look so forward to your videos and you’ve enriched my knitting life. 🥰🥰🥰. Think about taking the Musselburgh too…just in case. Have a wonderful trip!
I put stitch markers every 20 rows when i do sleeves. That way theres no struggles trying to get them the same. Works great for me. Love to sit and listen to you.
Hey, Lena. Wonderful podcast, as usual. I am so with you on the companion knitting. There’s always a project in my purse of some sort. If I forget something..a needle, additional yarn I feel empty; as though something is missing. So, I too spend time planning and packing my knitting bag. Somewhere along the way I’ve turned into a bag lady..lol. I love knitting and I love your love and adoration of all things knitting. What I enjoy is your authenticity and energy. Happy Thanksgiving and Knitting. Enjoy. I look forward to catching up next time. ❤
I just love your podcasts…and your knitting. I rarely leave comments, but I couldn’t help but share how you made me laugh and I want to thank you for it! I too, keep knitting with me at all times and often in my purse…better than vodka!😂
Great podcast, as usual. Your authenticity is a gift. Thank you! I just went on a trip and of course always bring too much knitting. This time I brought the sweater I started and then brought an easy back up, the Bolton Pass Hat. Great hat, love a slouch, free pattern, on my third! Have a great trip😊
Love all the projects you're contemplating. I always take more than I can knit. I would take the colorwork cowl and the musselburgh so you can rotate to suit the moment. And the musselburgh will give you a break from the colorwork. I like the light blue on dark blue combo best. Happy Travels!
Happy travels and Thanksgiving with your parents. For your travel knitting may I suggest the color work cowl and a musselburgh hat in a beautiful color. They have two different purposes - the hat will be good when you are trying to visit with others, the cowl is a good mind focused project. What do you think?
Yellow and the blue would look great together. Have both projects so you can switch and do either one when you're in the mood. I need to plan like you to have projects to travel with. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 Enjoy your family time .
I’m so glad to hear your dilemma on a few projects to bring when traveling ! Recently, flying out to Connecticut and going to Rhinebeck , I brought and always have a Musselburgh, along with a pattern w/ o a chart. The Musselburgh can get boring but it was a blessing in disguise as while flying two people seated in front of me were talking non stop and loud. Thank goodness, my Musselburgh saved me. Socks are always good unless you’re on the gusset / short rows part. ( Also, I add multiple stripes to the second half of the Musselburgh & bring fun bright mini skeins, leftover stash ) I usually have a Ranunculus with me b/c after knitting up 3 I can knit on it in a group setting. I’m so happy to have found your podcast ! Safe travels ! BTW…..I love Boulder ❤
Happy Thanksgiving! Safe travels. I think you should take both projects...the hat and cowl of space allows. The hat for when you're catching up, and the cowl for the plane ride. I love travel knitting!
Firstly Happy Birthday to your precious daughter! I totally understand Leena! Every January we leave for Florida. We are there for 4 months and the amount of time I spend stressing over what yarn and projects to bring is INSANE 😂 Last year I brought at a minimum of 5 sock projects., 2 shawl projects, a sweater project, a cowl project, about 3 or 4 interchangeable knitting needle sets and fixed, not to mention the several books and patterns.....and then I worry I won't have enough knitting! Craziness. I spend more time worrying about having enough knitting and yarn than I about bringing enough clothes 😅 Thankful for you to! Have a beautiful Thanksgiving and safe travels!❤
I have done 3 long plane trips since Oct. 1, and totally get your urgency for the right project. The Musselburgh would be grand for chatting with family knitting, but the cowl would be so much more fun. My solutions were: 1. The neckband for the Harley sweater 2 quilt block dishcloths, a mosaic pattern.
I am always so happy to see you and spend time here 🙏🤩 I can relate to the craving of bright colors while loving the more natural colors. I embrace it 😊 Throwing in a neon, Poppy red/orange is so liberating 😂 Enjoy our Colorado weather! It's been so beautifully sunny and cold here in Colorado Springs. My dogs are sunbathing on the deck whenever possible. ❤ Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family ❤
There is NOTHING cheesy about giving thanks. We are privileged to live and we always need to give thanks to the LORD above, and the family and friends that surround and support us. Never stop giving thanks.
I’m loving your blanket!! I am holding two strands of linen quill to make a Friday Shrug and can’t put it down because the color change/fade is so fun and the yarn is so squishy. I also have a very hard time deciding what knitting to pack when traveling. I’d pack the blanket if checking a bag and the cowl for the plane. Enjoy your trip. So thankful for you and your videos as well.
Your blanket is so gorgeous and you inspired me to use my minis and some mohair and it is going to be my Christmas knit so it was lovely to see your progress x the yellow with the blue for your cowl would look stunning. Have an amazing time with your family and happy thanksgiving x
For the sleeves issue, try using stitch markers to keep track of the count. I’ve made the Rain or Shine blanket too (with scraps) and it was so fun!! Happy knitting! Happy Thanksgiving and go for the neon yellow in the color work 😉.
1. Happy Thanksgiving 🍁 2. The neon green and denim linen quill 💛💙 3. I have recently picked the beekeepers quilt for my car knitting. Major stash buster but in a not-too-scrappy way and there are a TON of colorwork charts to thrown in the mix with plain stockinette ones. I’m planning to sew little pouches for stuffing and a tiny amount of poly pellets for each hexi to make it weighted. 🐝 🥰 Safest of travels, blow Dallas a kiss for me 😘
Love the blanket colors. How about another colorful travelers hat. Your first one is very cute. Rain and shine also comes in a shawl pattern. Do you have a few fun skeins to make it? Or since you know the pattern, free Lance a cowl using Rain and shine using your purple and yellow cakes. Happy Thanksgiving 😊
Hi Lena - happy thanksgiving. Enjoy your family time. I also do travel knitting angst! We recently returned from visiting Naples and I took with me Slip It Simple Socks (free pattern) and a Musselburgh hat. Both worked well for me to knit at airport, on the plane and during the visit. If you are ever in London (UK) lets meet up for a knit and natter 🙂
First of all happy thanksgiving. I just came back from a knitting retreat with Andrea Mowry and the Spincycle girls on Bainbridge Island. It was so much fun. I also always stress about travel knitting. This time I did knit a Mussleburgh hat for the first time. It was perfect, but I finished it very fast. I always have socks on the go. A self striping yarn makes it fun without being boring. I also worked on a pair of fingerless mittens. I love the neon colour for your cowl, but I would not take that as a travel knit. It’s annoying when you have to constantly look at a chart. I hope this is helpful. I also want to thank you for your podcast. I look forward to it every week.
I'm on the knits-to-pack struggle bus, too. I have a coast to coast flight on Sunday, then a 5-day drive back starting the next day with 2 cars, 3 adults, and 3 kids under 7. I finally settled on socks (one vanilla pair and one textured pair) and a pair of DK fingerless mitts. The idea is to work on whatever fits my current sanity level 😂 Safe travels next week, and thanks for sharing your knitting journey with us.
lol! I travel a lot, but always by car so space isn’t a big deal. I often take more yarn than clothing 😂 I would take the hat and socks. If you use fingering weight yarn the Musselburgh is a lot of knitting. I think the socks will be much easier to follow than the cowl. Non-repeating color work (for me) takes more concentration than anything else.
Happy Thanksgiving to you. I vote for the Musselburgh and the cowl with yellow 💛. Maybe for colour-work socks you need to try the method of knitting them inside out?
Here’s what I think about your travel knitting. Take the Musselburgh hat for when you are needing something mindless. And take either the socks or the cowl for the plane and when you have time to concentrate. Have a great week with your family!
I would choose the yellow if I were going to do the cowl. That said, colorwork would probably be too complicated for me while managing visiting with family (maybe that's just me, though) and I would probably opt for a half and half triangles wrap. I hope that you have safe travels and a wonderful holiday!
I made the Purl Soho Mitered Corner Blanket in shades of blue. And I had to reorder more Linen Quill twice! I LOVE IT! But the pattern was off as to amounts. Now I have been making little tops out of the leftovers. Lol
Hi Leena, regarding the ranunculus, my observation is that the original one you did in Linen Quill probably has more drape. Wait till you block the new one and it may be ok. Sometimes I freak out and then when I block it I wonder why I want to jump the gun. I am contemplating the travel knit too. Heading to Bruges and Amsterdam at the beginning of Dec. and want to cast on something special. I think the cowl is the way to go. I think I should do Stephen West as I will go to Stephen and Penelope while there and what could be more perfect? I have not been there, but sent my husband to get me some yarn 3 years ago. There is a story. He was talking with Stephen and could not make up his mind, so Stephen suggested a book on natural dyeing (as I am into that) and my husband came home with the book. Little did he know that at exactly the same time I was looking at a natural dyeing retreat in Denmark, but wanted to wait till he got home to float the idea. Of course the book was written by the same ladies that were doing the retreat! So I hit the button and went on the retreat . It was kismet. Thanks Stephen!
Funny you should be talking about travel projects as I am sitting here at the airport waiting out an 8+ hour delay (so far…) Thank the heavens for knitting! I usually bring a “vanilla” sock, but I add a texture pattern to it so I don’t go insane. I’ve finished one, and started the second while I sit here. For your travel I would recommend bringing two projects, in case one goes wrong (or you finish it). Then you have a backup. Good luck!
Oh my gosh!! Are you kidding Joanne?? I hope you are going somewhere amazing. Hearing this, I might pack 3 projects 😂 I hope you get to where you are going soon!!
I totally understand your feelings about making sure you don't run out of knitting/have the right type of project for travel. I recently was on a backpacking trip in Scotland with my 23 year old daughter (which was amazing - it didn't go exactly as planned, but after the initial sadness over the change in plans we rallied with plan B and got on with it!) which was planned for 13 days total including the flights of course. When I say space was limited I am not kidding - my 32 L pack was stuffed to within an inch of it's life and even squeezing a sock project in there seemed crazy. Long(er) story short - I finished it before the flight home...😳 Also - being new to kindle, I didn't think about the bandwidth needed to download a book so had NOTHING TO READ for the entire flight home. I tried not to fret and allowed myself to be bored (although I had my podcasts phew) which is supposed to be healthy right lol??? Being a gen x, I did know how to be bored luckily and I just allowed it to happen while gazing out the window (our flight seemed a bit weirdly low?) at Canada haha. So that's my story - it is possible (though uncomfortable) to not have exactly what we think we need, so reassure yourself that you'll be just fine however it works out. I hope you have a great trip, a lovely holiday and beautiful time with your family. See you when you get back!
Go for the cowl in the highlighter. However, if travel stresses you out, your color work may get too tight. For the hat, you should start that pattern at home. There is some measuring at the start that you will lot want to deal with at an airport/airplane. Just FYI.
Hi Lena! I am a new follower of your channel and have loved your content and the ease you share bits and pieces of your life. I relate to the love and joy knitting brings to your life. I was wondering if you are active in Raverly and your Rav name. It would be lovely to see more details of your knits. Thank You for the your inspiration !
For colorwork socks - Summer Lee's patterns have us go up a needle size in the colorwork sections, but Charlotte Stone's patterns actually have us stick with the same needle size - but you add stitches. So if you usually make a 72 st sock, you'd cast on that amount for the cuff, knit the cuff, then before starting colorwork you do a round of increases (usually a whole pattern size up. So from 72 to 80 sts) Long story short, Summer Lee's approach doesn't work for my feet, but Charlotte Stone's increase trick does.
I'm thankful for You too, I look forward to your episodes so much! Enjoy your time with family! Safe Travels! 🛫✈🛬 With my recent travel knitting, I took two pairs of socks (4 socks) - I almost only took one pair BUT my Husband said "just bring both." In past travels, I've brought 3 to 4 projects (a couple knit and/or crochet).💗💓💗💓💗
Awe, I'm so grateful for you as well!!
Watching your pod feels like chatting with a good friend about all the amazing yarn-y joy, and I'm so here for it!

Love your quilt cardigan!

Yes! Do the cowl colorwork. Have a wonderful Holiday!
Hey girl! Bring the hat and cowl so you have options!
I agree! That hat alone will be boring, but perfect if you're visiting with family. The cowl is gorgeous (pick the blue and neon--stunning!!). We appreciate you and enjoy your videos. Have a great Thanksgiving.
The blanket is amazing ❤ Beautiful
I put stitch markers every 20 rows when i do sleeves. That way theres no struggles trying to get them the same. Works great for me. Love to sit and listen to you.
I love the chain row counters from Twice Sheared Sheep. Makes counting sleeve rows so much easier
The yellow gets my vote for the cowl. I think you should bring that and the Mussleburgh hat. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and safe travels!

OMG you made the Heirloom Cardigan! I will go back and watch your video on it. I really want to make this. Yours is beautiful.

a little late to the party but i LOVE the highlighter yellow’s contrast with the linen quill! and it seems like a very “you” color combo

For the length of sleeves even count the rows you knit
You are so sweet!
"Cheesy American culture to give thanks at Thanksgiving." Did I hear that right?
For colorwork socks - Summer Lee's patterns have us go up a needle size in the colorwork sections, but Charlotte Stone's patterns actually have us stick with the same needle size - but you add stitches.
