Hurting someone wasn't part of being a Club Kid though, this was secretly done and based on personal greed and drugs. It's nothing to do with the group as a whole.
He took angel and chopped him like a turkey on Thanksgiving. To get his limbs to fit in a bag 🦵 Then he comes out of prison and wants a reality show. If that isn't a sociopath/Narcissist combo then I don't know what is.
I remember the club kids, they were so fun to watch, I was actually a club promoter for Limelight, Club Velvet, Webster Hall, Palladium, and The Tunnel in '93-94, the year this episode aired in fact, and I remember partying in my bodysuit, miniskirt, fishnets and combat boots even before I started promoting, it was the best time ever!!
In the early 1980s my older sisters and I had been in downtown Chicago IL by the Limelight Night Club! We saw three club kids all dressed up and I was hooked at 15 yrs old. We rolled down the windows of our car and yelled WE LOVE YOU ALL. Anna is now 54 and still loves them all dearly.
I frequented Limelight but never dressed like this. I remember watching from the balcony. Never took a drug and maybe had one drink. I liked the music too. It always surprised me at how open the drug usage was and they never got busted sooner than they did.
Honestly this one got under my skins a little bit because I've always been fascinated by performers and club kids and drag queens...it's all about being yourself. I don't get what was so hard to process.
Phil is so adorable with that sober, Irish dad snark with big grandpa eyes and hearing aids.🥰 Michael Alig literally clapped at him to get his attention LMAO. They simply could not impress him.
Crazy….. I remember being home from school while sick and seeing this episode. I’m 45 now lol went to the limelight at the tail end before they closed…. At that point the tunnel, sound factory, exit and Twylo were the big clubs. Then Giuliani had them all closed. Nyc was never the same. Now if you want to go out dancing you need to get a table and spend $600 a bottle. Good times back then. They say youth is wasted on the young…. Definitely wasn’t wasted we had a blast!
My friend made me watch Party Monster a couple weeks ago and ever since then I've been fascinated by club kids. I don't know if I would necessarily want to be one, but I find them all fascinating.
I didn't think this interview would annoy me as much as it did but damn I hope parents have changed their ways since the 20 years this was on. Not trying to get political here but kids are killing themselves because they haven't got anyone who understands them and that even their own parents laugh at them or disown them or are ashamed to have them. And I think one thing Michael and James did great was they gave an opportunity for the kids to express themselves and honestly, I can honestly say that they probably saved a lot of people from killing themselves. It's a shame what happened afterwards with Michael.
I liked the scene back at the turn of the millenium the best; the vibe and the flashiness that erupted from people's excitement was such a great thing. There were a FEW people who did dress up a little like this, but the style was completely different. Lots of shiney and silver stuff, flashy lights, etc. So, the atmosphere and clothes were kewl, and everyone was so excited and happy, because of the events of the time. It was pretty neat to experience ^_^
I love this culture, it seems non judgmental, I know they are profoundly judgmental but at the same time it lets people live their fantasies. I wish creative fashion was mainstream everywhere, really.
I just love philly d. my mom still talks about going to his show while he was in Chicago. i think he reinforced my parents accepting attitude. Phil is a great interview. his class, style and demeanor is a force. wish our media talking heads would remove their proverbial heads and recall what class looked like/ Mr. Phil Donuahue, you are a class act.
I always wanted to be a club kid. Now at 49 I wish I would have tried it. But I'm glad I didn't cuz I would probably be dead or strung out. Nothing worse than a has been trying to look cool. Looking at you Astro Earl. It's time to grow up.
We go to tunnel,WebsterHall, USA, Mars,of course Limelight.NYCBABY.We were straight so we didn't dress like that, used to see Club Kids all the time having fun.We used to go upstairs at limelight. One of the cross dresser rooms and hang out and have a blast or 2 LOL! There was always this same guy wore a big dress and a lot of makeup prolly a club kid-big 6ft+ heavy guy that used to always try to dance with me, cut in front of me-whatever girl I was dancing with and bump me-I danced w/him once,we all got a kick out of it. my friends would break my balls-Say I was going to the other side. He knew I was straight but he was having his fun, wish I knew his name. RealBigXDresserGuy.My friends & I hit several Clubs a Night eat E and go to tunnel at like 4am Dance to Junior Vasquez till 9/10am. we would all come out of the club with the sun Shining-like a bunch of vampires. Still energized. Go to breakfast,Than sleep or work all DayMeet-up-rinse and repeat.AAH! MISS the shit out of them DAYS!
It's about dressing how you feel... I always dress how I feel before I go out to an EDM event =) Club kids are still around just not as extreme... James St James just held an event an hour away from me this past weekend. =0)
@MephistophelisedHam before richie was a designer he did actually release some club tracks in the early 90s. i belive he even released a 4 song EP that did pretty well amonst electronic music scene. :)
@Eric61801 although that is probably true for some, one opposing example James St. James ( the one with black green and yellow huge crazy hair thing) has written two very successful books and is a staple in the fashion industry and on shows like rupauls drag race and America's next top model. Just letting you know
I never did anything stronger than shots, and that was true for most of my friend and other promoters I worked with, and even the few that did pot, they never got into anything stronger than a joint, so not everyone who partied in Limelight or any of the clubs, in this era did drugs, and I loved the club kids, they were friendly and entertaining and not all were junkies, so it's not a fair assumption.
@jewelscreation1 Me too, makes me a bit sad that all this awesomeness was happening when I was only 4 years old ,and now that I'm old enough it doesn't exist anymore. I was born at the wrong time.
Most talk shows start out as kind of respectable and legit. Then they realize people who are watching are mostly trailer trash rejects who want to see sensationalism. Donahue is no different.
Society is never going to be what you want it to be Donahue! That is why these kids did this! They were and still are being suppressed by our countries need to be normal and uninteresting. Some people choose to be different, some people choose to be themselves.
Phil is In-real-life scared of people in costumes... he has never heard of going out to clubs, doesnt know it's called "going out"... is surprised they let in black people . WTF ? seems like he grew up on an isolated red-neck ranch, then jumped straight into live TV. Also, 6:30 - hangs up on the caller who supports the club kids.
They are original shit! So free minded and so party animal! real inspiration to get out of this fucking pathetic world!(without the drugs) I love them and i wish i could have been at least in 1 of their crazy partys!
It has definitely changed. Before it was more flamboyant. NOW I would say is more of a pose and looking pretty/hot which I would say has absolutely lost the idea of being REAL and being yourself. Gays encourage others to be themselves...yet they pose to be attractive...
the caller at 6:16 makes me angsty i am 15 and if i had the chance to call them i would have said hi i'm 15 and i think you are all beautiful rays of sunshine and i want to be you what a nut
On the surface the Club Kids present a positive message of fun, creativity & a having a good head on your shoulders but these freaks ain't where it's at...
The NYC club scene was so much cooler back then. If only I could have been 22 in 1993 instead if 2011 -_- , I definitely would've been a club kid! Now its all about this Jersey Shore type of scene, which is quite boring to me. I want the club kid scene to make a comeback!
Michael Alig... "As long as it doesn't hurt anybody." The irony.
I was just thinking the same. The irony is DRIPPING.
but i dont think his creative expression hurt anyone, his drug addiction did surely...there is a difference
Absolutely, but in his situation, this made for a good satirical remark.
Hurting someone wasn't part of being a Club Kid though, this was secretly done and based on personal greed and drugs. It's nothing to do with the group as a whole.
He took angel and chopped him like a turkey on Thanksgiving. To get his limbs to fit in a bag 🦵

james st james is killing the game in these videos, that outfit, those thoughts. very well put together!
I know! He looks absolutely amazing!
It's amazing they can remain so calm with these a-holes making fun of them on tv ! St James looks so pretty
This scene needs to make a comeback

Ms. Close I used to go to Limelight for fun, as well, in the 80s. My boyfriend’s brother’s group performed there in 1987.
And I thank you for part 2 of the brilliance!
The party scene were the best years of my life. I am really working to get to where I can bring this scene back and better than ever.
the club kids were so incredible.
I like how they "lost" the caller that did Rocky Horror.
No kidding!! That was on purpose for some fucking reason...
6:30 Donahue hangs up on that caller and pretends like it was a mistake!
I was too young to remember Donahue.... Thank God for that!!!!!!
Club Kids are Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly this one got under my skins a little bit because I've always been fascinated by performers and club kids and drag queens...it's all about being yourself. I don't get what was so hard to process.
"i just call it going out....." *sits down dramatically*
Man Donahue was condescending.
Micah Elliott Yes he was. Absolutely disgusting and closed minded. 👎🏻
I can't believe this was 20 years ago! I remember watching this so clearly, especially that Richie guy for some reason.
*30
I'm currently a club kid... you all should come to garlands liverpool and see how we do it in 2012!!!
I remember this episode! I was in 7th grade and my mom was watching. I only stopped because I thought it was some kind of Halloween costume show. :/
The apparent homophobia is bugging me...jeez we've made a lot of big strides since then.
I remember watching this when I was in 8th grade!
Phil is so adorable with that sober, Irish dad snark with big grandpa eyes and hearing aids.🥰 Michael Alig literally clapped at him to get his attention LMAO. They simply could not impress him.
That huge dread-like hair piece is blowing my mind. I want to copy his whole look, it's amazing.
Crazy….. I remember being home from school while sick and seeing this episode. I’m 45 now lol went to the limelight at the tail end before they closed…. Why Richie Rich was not portraited in Party Monster? He seems one of the leaders of that movement
I liked the scene back at the turn of the millenium the best; the vibe and the flashiness that erupted from people's excitement was such a great thing. LONG LIVE THE CLUB KIDS. Such beautiful people.
I just love philly d. my mom still talks about going to his show while he was in Chicago. i think he reinforced my parents accepting attitude. Phil is a great interview. his class, style and demeanor is a force. wish our media talking heads would remove their proverbial heads and recall what class looked like/ Mr. Phil Donuahue, you are a class act.
the make-up is amazing, petrilude needs to do some tutorials from club kid inspiration
& i love at the very end the white all over the dance floor with the huge K hanging from the ceiling. classic. miss those days.
ironic that Donahue judges them by their clothes and then asks if he'd be welcome in some Club because of his old look. what a jerk.
They were pretty punk rock, and by that I mean very anti-conformity, they don't even have a set look, it's WHATEVER.
They actually kind of all look the same though.
Christopher Martin Punk rock means conforming against society not against everyone in the world.
+Christopher “Chris” Martin uh, not to me.
Im so happy this is history
@hattersuffa there are still some club kids they just hide in the rave scene if you want to bring back the club kid scene then do it :)
I always wanted to be a club kid. Now at 49 I wish I would have tried it. But I'm glad I didn't cuz I would probably be dead or strung out. Nothing worse than a has been trying to look cool. Looking at you Astro Earl. It's time to grow up.
I've seen recent pictures of him. Good lord...bloated and half dead looking.
THANK YOU
there so Fabulous
@BennyB5555 gotta look that up! im from portland and there's not a big club scene here as far as i know of.
The 18 year old in the red suspenders looks like Molly Ringwald with black hair! Gorgeous,! 💖
Ritchie and James are the fiercest individuals on that set! ^ _ ^
Kids and want to be Club Kids the one place you can still see this type of scene today is New Orleans where it is still cool to be Fabulous..
@BeepStratten yes beep. you can still find richie rich, kenny kenny, and amanda lepore out and about the city. There is the newer generation as well
We go to tunnel,WebsterHall, USA, Mars,of course Limelight.NYCBABY.We were straight so we didn't dress like that, used to see Club Kids all the time having fun.We used to go upstairs at limelight. That's why he invite different people on the show, to understand them.
It's about dressing how you feel... I always dress how I feel before I go out to an EDM event =) Club kids are still around just not as extreme... James St James just held an event an hour away from me this past weekend. =0)
Donahue's judgement towards this is all about his homophobia.
But again, I can't tell. Phil was had more shows about gay people than probably anyone else at that time. At a time when no one else did, idk.
I mean throughout the 80's really
@MephistophelisedHam before richie was a designer he did actually release some club tracks in the early 90s. i belive he even released a 4 song EP that did pretty well amonst electronic music scene. :)

@carl8lamsbar
yea he is, i could barely get over him... Who's the boy next to Michael with the blue shirt? they never say his name :(
Richie Rich
Me too!!!
Wish it lasted.
I wish also that I wasn't a little kid back then.
@jewelscreation1 Me too, makes me a bit sad that all this awesomeness was happening when I was only 4 years old ,and now that I'm old enough it doesn't exist anymore. I was born at the wrong time.
I always found them very interesting. "What if?" But growing up in rural South Texas, nope.
It could one day, I hope....
@ninoacido no. jennytalia was some one different, gitsie was from dallas and didn't join the "crew" till years later.
wuddacutiepie85 He is the 4th one down. He is the one in the blond wig, and black headdress :)
1:22 did Aquaria time travel to 1993?
Michael cracks me up!
...and now they're 45.
Now they are 55 lol
@shockyurmind69 i agree, he's my favorite, one of the most well-spoken. I kinda wanna know who he is.
the way Michael stomps his foot to get and tells James to shutup omigod I love him haha
Liberalism is one hell of a drug
SOMEONE FIND OUT THE NAME OF THE BOY WITH THE RED SUSPENDERS ! AND THE GUY WHO TALKED AFTER HIM !
Lady Gaga got the monsterball from this im guessing
@shockyurmind69 Agree. I hate his gelled hair but he's really pretty and his makeup is done really well.
i feel this show was too conservative and seemed to attack the club kids.
duh, that's what talk show hosts generally do, lambast their guests in order to provoke the audienc and the guests to act out. It works.
but other shows that i watch don't do that, or do it at a minimal. the ones that are just like this are ghetto like the jerry show
Most talk shows start out as kind of respectable and legit. Then they realize people who are watching are mostly trailer trash rejects who want to see sensationalism. Donahue is no different.
trueeee
@BeepStratten nope. jenny talia isn't gitsie and is still alive :)
i still love michael even though he murdered angel. idk he is so unique and likeable, id love to meet him.
Is Jenny Italia aka Gitsie ?
@thegirl44 very true. the club kids are just kind of a generation x extention of the whole worhol factory scene or whatev
This is back when PLUR actually meant something. That respect has been gone from the scene for years.
Still waiting.
🍿🥺
Society is never going to be what you want it to be Donahue! That is why these kids did this! They were and still are being suppressed by our countries need to be normal and uninteresting. Some people choose to be different, some people choose to be themselves.
@MephistophelisedHam he sings too, look for "celebutante"
Phil is In-real-life scared of people in costumes... he has never heard of going out to clubs, doesnt know it's called "going out"... is surprised they let in black people . Make it. Do whats real in your heart and it will happen. : ) I do and im 23 in 2012.
It has definitely changed. Before it was more flamboyant. NOW I would say is more of a pose and looking pretty/hot which I would say has absolutely lost the idea of being REAL and being yourself. Gays encourage others to be themselves...yet they pose to be attractive...

their so mean! lol LOL

“He’s got gray hair”. Ppl now die their hair gray..
lol the people at the end cannot dance worth a shit... but they're likely having more fun than i've ever had in my life :)
How was he syndicated? He keeps bringing it back to race....
@littlemonster333 Yes yes yes She IS GITSIE !
thanks little monster
LOL at the wacko at 2:50 to 2:53 wtf is he wearing WTF are all of them wearing?
@ohtwiddlesticks oh don't be stupid Donahue was by far far far the best of the daytime talkshow hosts, of course that isn't saying a helluva lot lol
@thejbiznizexperience haha true enough, i didn't mean crazy as in nuts i meant crazy as in like crazy awesome :P
@kayshinevar same!!
@yellowsailoryo It's annoying isn't it.I wanna hear what they have to say without him interrupting.
james st james actually kinda hot in that getup
@8008111 don't forget basquist
Im the same age as jenny
Donahue doesn't understand the word "fun". They've been having to explain it countless times for him
i wonder what phil was on, he has no idea what hes talking about, crooked people lol.
