    Great information. I am Stage 4 copd with emphysema. I was on life support twice 8 years ago. I quit smoking in 2008 and was put on life support in 2014. Went through 12 weeks of rehab. Then I joined an Adult Wellness Center to exercise. In 2015 my breathing capacity was at 23%. A year later I did another Pulmonary Function Test and it showed 28%. My Pulmonologist was pretty happy with me. I did another Test in 2021 that showed my breathing capacity at 31%. So I know exercise is a huge benefit for us. Now I need to be using my Spirometer more and my breathing device. Another thing I would like to mention that has really helped me with getting Mucus up and out is the Aerobika. The hospitals call it a Flutter Device. It works like a charm when I am having some difficulty with coughing up the mucus. I also have a lot of Faith in God!

      Mucus contains large amounts of sulfur. Sulfur molecules form di-sulfide bonds with each other. This causes the mucus to clump together making it difficult, even impossible to cough up and out of the lungs. NAC breaks the di-sulfide bonds essentially liquefying the mucus allowing the patient to cough it up and out of the lungs.

    Can i still scuba dive with early onset copd/ emphysema ?

    • @seeadler3233
      @seeadler3233 7 місяців тому

      NO -- early onset COPD and emphysema can cause air to become trapped in the alveoli -- and trapped air can cause an air embolism . I am a former SCUBA instructor ( over 20 years ) -- however I am not a doctor and you should direct your question to a diving physician. DAN can steer you to a diving physician in your area.
      I have ( reluctantly ) turned away many many potential customers who had a fistful of dollars and a great desire to dive -- but their health made diving risky .
      Best of luck to you and STAY HEALTHY ! Good health is EVERYTHING.
      Below -- From DAN ( Divers Alert Network )
      "Unfortunately, COPD is a contraindication to diving for several reasons. With COPD, there are abnormal enlargements of the air spaces in the lungs and destruction of the air sac (alveoli) walls, reducing their elasticity. The alveolar walls are normally elastic like a balloon. A balloon expands when you breathe into it, but the walls are ready to recoil and expel the air, which is how normal alveoli function. With reduced elasticity, it is more like breathing into a plastic bag. It expands, but the walls do not actively force out the air. Any air remaining in the alveoli creates a much higher potential for pulmonary barotrauma. "

    • @seeadler3233
      @seeadler3233 3 місяці тому

      Any process or lesion that impedes airflow from the lungs places
      the diver at risk for pulmonary overinflation with alveolar rupture
      and the possibility of cerebral air embolization. Many interstitial
      diseases predispose to spontaneous pneumothorax: Asthma
      (reactive airway disease), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), cystic or cavitating lung diseases may all cause air
      trapping. The 1996 Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society
      (UHMS) consensus on diving and asthma indicates that for the
      risk of pulmonary barotrauma and decompression illness to be
      acceptably low, the asthmatic diver should be asymptomatic and
      have normal spirometry before and after an exercise test.
      Inhalation challenge tests (e.g.: using histamine, hypertonic
      saline or methacholine) are not sufficiently standardized to be
      interpreted in the context of scuba diving.

    I don’t agree going to the gym doesn’t work. I’m six weeks getting over a flare up and viral infection, (the rescue emergency pack ( steroids and antibiotics UK) didn’t work as it only helps with a bacterial infection), and not been able to do anything at all including exercise and my fitness level including my immune system have deteriorated badly. But normally I get to the gym three days a week working cardio which strengthens my lung and heart response and, even on the weight machines, deepen my breathing. It’s important not to overdo it and rest is very important but, for me, it makes the difference between fighting and controlling COPD or my life being controlled by it.

    Nonsense -- all of us who are older are " close to the end of our lives " and our own mortality looms large. I am an old man ( mid-seventies ) and in good health but I am looking at the final years -- which will come soon enough . I read these comments and I am filled with profound sorrow when I read about your maladies and poor health . Living with COPD sounds like a type of walking death -- and I don`t wish suffering on any person ( or animal ). And your final years should be as vibrant , healthy and hopeful as possible .
    I am also pissed --- pissed that I had to put up with self righteous smokers all my life who subjected me to their stench and smoke -- smokers who became angry when I told them their smoke kept me from enjoying a meal or an outing Hundreds of times in my life I have fled a restaurant or another venue when the smoke became unbearable or smokers wanted to fight when they were politely asked not to smoke around me or my child with asthma.Smokers never cared about my health or enjoyment --- but now that they have COPD --- health is important .Health is and was ALWAYS important to some of us --- but smokers didn`t care about my health --- or theirs. Many of you reading this will recognize yourself --- you may be the militant smoker who will fight for his " right " to smoke or you may be a non - smoker who often kept silent simply to keep the peace.

      Why would I be " bitter " ? I`m still enjoying a life free from chronic illness while folks 20 and 30 years younger are suffering .
      I have had an exciting and healthy life and I am still healthy and still engage in my primary hobbies SCUBA diving and long distance cycling and touring . I am simply stating the obvious --- that EVERYONE at this stage in life is CLOSE TO THE END . It is so sad to read these comments from folks so much younger than I am who are struggling to breathe while I still enjoy a healthy and vibrant lifestyle. ( Praise the lard )
      We are all given one life to live and it is your choice how you decide to spend ( or squander ) those years.
      Life is a precious gift and to squander and ruin your health ( and the health of others ) just because you want to look " cool " with a fag in your mouth demonstrates a self-centered and self-destructive attitude .
      I am also stating that smokers who now have COPD have no one but themselves to blame . But nicotine is a very addictive drug and smokers are addicts --- no different than a heroin or meth addict or an alcoholic .
