  • Kenrap is eight years old. He is a Buddhist monk and lives in the Phuktal monastery on the peaks of the Himalayan mountains of Zanskar.
Kenrap chose his life away from his family: when he was five, he remembered he was the reincarnation of a 68 year-old monk, and then decided to return to the monastery where he belonged.
Filmed from the point of view of a subjective camera by a young ethnologist, this award-winning film follows this attaching little monk with whom we share moments of intimacy, and gives us a rare glance at Buddhist monastic life.

A child is a child no matter what, the young monk for moment was a child through his tears I thought please if his mother couldn’t give him the hug he needed I pray someone did because all I saw was the pain of no affection, I wished I could have put arms around him to soothe him and wipe away his tears, such a hard thing to see him try to be brave..it’s almost to harsh a life for someone so young. I have studied their religion as best I can with the resources available. Their strength and connection with the earth and elements is not super human, but what ever human should have. @@tseringkaljan8791 I am a Buddist myself ... Yes - I see my circle of friends and even ppl I meet in the temple are helpful and generally kind but I doubt many amongst us can practise and consistently be as humble and accept what they have AS IT IS ... We keep striving for better and try to achieve more success so we can enjoy material stuffs - you know to have more comfort, bigger house, holidays in comfort & the list can go on ... etc etc
Even as I get older and if after the pandemic and I wish to visit Tibet & Bhuttan again it will be tough now as to climb those rough temple stairs and even their grounds is an achievement not to mention to eat the local food ... I've been to Tibet so many times and until today I cannot get used to eating their local staple of wheat floor with milk ..
Tibetians are really an amazing bunch - God Bless them

I am from Himalaya of 🇳🇵 Nepal, near to upper Tibet.in my village no 🛣️, no vehicle 🚜,no electricity 🔌,no modern technology effects.totally weak facility but villagers are living within very peace and happy more than cities lifestyle.i became Buddhist monk at 20 age.studies so harder about Buddhism because it's not easy to understand because Buddhism very profound even my age is also not perfect because I never been studies anything until 20 age.but by the great blessing of Buddha, dharma and Sangh community my realization about Buddhism is pretty good but never ever enough.i want practice continuously until last breath of mine.yes Tibet is beautiful country and Tibetan are nice human being,it's all the blessings of Buddha and his teaching because you know and I know because there has authentic or real histories.before Buddhism spread in Tibet they were also too rude people but after many great masters include many great kings tried harder to invited the Buddha's teaching in Tibet as translated then Tibet gradually be more peace and happiness prevailed around.from 🇳🇵 kathmandu.take care.

@@tseringkaljan8791 Thank you very much for sharing your experiences with me dear Tsering Kaljan. I wish you all good blessings and I do hope you'll achieve your deep understanding of Buddhism and also your practise a a good monk. The 5 times I've been to Tibet and was briefed each time on your country history, I still find that I not not familar and need to read more - BUT for me, I don't like to read too much and prefer to watch any videos I can find that share the culture, the country and its people in Tibet. Those that I like, I can watch and rewatch many times.
The first time I visited Kathmandhu, I had a very good tour guide - Dawa Tsering Sherpa and since then, I will usually just call him to arrange the land tours for me & my friends. Even Kathmandhu - I've visited like 6 times and been to Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Shikkim, Gantok but still very fascinated with overall Tibet.
But as compared to the 1st time I step foot in Llhasa city and the Potala Palace 25 years ago - there is such a drastic change since China took over ... I miss the old Potala Palace with the lake but now all cement and commercial shops ... the plus point of China take over is when I had the 4-wheel drive across Tibet - WE had mobile signal all the way during our 14 days tour even at the three highest passes we crossed.
Guess in Tibet, most of you are not affect by the Covid-19 pandemic : As for the rest of the world, it was tough and even affected the whole Country economy and made many sick, die and even poor - As business & shops have to shut down and the country do so many times of LOCKDOWN.
But how time flies and its been two years so its become a lifestyle for many of us to adapt to the situation. My only stress is now I am unable to travel for the last two years ... and I do hope all will be back to normal soon ... U Take Care Stay Safe

I really enjoyed this but there was an underlying issue nagging at me. The "young ethnologist" makes inexcusable errors throughout. The biggest problem was asking the mother about not being around her son and if it made her sad. She did that in front of the child. Then she did it again. She also did it to the boy several times, as if she wanted them to feel the pain of their separation. The next thing you know the kid is crying and blaming it on the mumps, but it was the "young ethnologist" that instigated those tears. Why? It was uncool for sure. She asked him again from couple of different angles when they left the house to return to the monastery Finally, when the kid is walkiing on tricky terrian she starts talking to him about falling.
I think the "young ethnologist " needs therapy.

I felt the same. She did not connect to the honesty in which the young monk really pursued and loved the monastic life. instead, she was digging with questions of a "western mind" - to search for drama and painful emotions. "are you not going to leave the monastery"? no. "forever?". she was really searching for the cracks in happiness the child clearly showed.
it's actually not a "western mind" per se, just a very afflicted mind, who was never trained in what brings lasting happiness and what is non beneficial for one's life. So she attaches value to painful emotions as if they were real, and thinks that if she manages to revive them then "the truth is revealed".
otherwise, i did enjoyed the movie. their difficult yet obviously happy and satisfying life is admirable. their basic kind heart and is obvious.
