  • Hello everyone! This week was a windy and rainy one here (mostly wind). Because of the wolves Peach has been restricted to on-leash again - likely to the end of March. In this video I explain my theory on why the wolves keep coming around.
    I hope you enjoy the video and a huge thank you for watching!
    Amanda + Peach (& Buttercup, in spirit ❤️)

    The wolves want to lure your dog away, so do not let her off leash until the threat is over, they try that in Northern Canada all the time, sometimes with success

    • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid  6 місяців тому +12

      yes!!! i think that’s what the howl is meant to do…she’s staying on leash for sure!

    • @dannyplummer8187
      @dannyplummer8187 6 місяців тому +5

      They will even try to come out into the open to lure her to them and then they will grab her. You will know when it will be safe enough to let her off the leash

      Upstate New York 8 miles from Canadas border, on my sons property we hear wolfs sometimes ( I have a tiny house there for summers and falls ) very dense woods, and we loved our dogs could run and explore down to our lake, yet my son build a fence for our dogs for their protection. We didn’t want a fence,nor did we want our dogs limited outdoor space, but with possible wolfs we had to. Stay safe.

    You said it Peach will not like life on a leash, but she wouldn’t like a face to face meeting with a wolf either.

    This may sound odd but might be worth a try. Wolves, domestic and wild, use urine to mark territory for various reasons. Save some of your urine and mark some sort of a larger circle around maybe your dwelling place. Will be interesting to learn the reaction. Scent is everything to them.
    Good luck and stay safe.

    • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid  6 місяців тому +5

      doesn’t sound odd at all. when i was caretaking in desolation sound many years back i had a cougar that kept coming onto the property. i did exactly that. not sure if it worked, but i didn’t see him after that.

    • @UncaDave
      @UncaDave 6 місяців тому +3

      @@AmandaOffGrid That sounds great! Thanks for the info. and reply. Scent is a powerful indicator. Especially with a Mama bear as when her cubs might be at a little distance from her. She knows all the time where they are. If she picks up a new scent it can be interpreted as a threat. Another reason to keep distance from a cub. I bet you could write a book about your many experiences! Rubs to your Peach!

    Amanda, it’s so wonderful seeing you back. I just knew it was something to do with Buttercup. My heart cries for you, I Know all too well the loss of a beloved pet. ( many times over) The pain is almost unbearable, they are our babies. So a tight hug for you, as I know you’ll cherish her memories. …. I’m thrilled you realized what a gift of love you have for another dog, in time. I already love Peaches. Again it made my day seeing you back. I have missed you so much! ……
    My little dog is 11 years old and has arthritis fairly bad, know I have to prepare myself for the inevitable. We love you girl! An old 70 y/o lady from Nashville Tennessee. ❤❤❤ PS: I know you’ll be super careful with those Wolfs around for both you and Peaches.

    A rather anxious week for you and Peach. I think wolves can be unpredictable so you are doing exactly right keeping Peach on a short leash. Friends of ours got surrounded by a small pack of young wolves. They were after their dog who was an elderly Chesapeake. The wolves were youngsters, in a gang, looking for action! A disturbing situation until the wolves eventually backed down and sauntered off.
    Nice cabin. I wish I could clean that fast....😂

    I lived in Seattle for awhile and in 1989 I saw a wolf while camping and told a game warden and he said it must have been a coyote because didn't live in Washington state and I told him it was definitely a wolf . I was telling people about that encounter and then it was on tv about wolves being found in the Cascades . I don't know if they weren't aware of the wolves when I saw one or if they were keeping it a secret from the public . By the way I just found your channel and subscribed !

We have a pack of Wolves that live in our woods. We heard them howling about a month ago. They howled in the middle of the day. We've seen their tracks and scat on our road. • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid  6 місяців тому +2

      i've thought about this alot. Peach is the first dog in many years to live here full time AND have full reign of the property. from what i understand a caretaker from many years back did have a dog here full time, but it was a small dog that spent most of her time indoors. Buttercup also spent most of her time indoors. in her old age she just wanted to sleep and eat :). if Butter was outside she walked from my cabin the house and sometimes sat out front the cabin. she never explored the way Peach does. Peach will sometimes wander up into the forest a bit. I am really hoping this isn't a case of her being outside so much that the wolves discovered she's here. i'm learning a lot from the comments in this video as well about how wolves operate. poor Peach may be on leash indefinitely moving forward :(

    What about outfitting Peach with a spiked, wide leather collar and a protection vest (like is used for dogs used for hunting wild boar). Not saying these precautions would make the leash unnecessary but just trying to think of all options to keep her safe. Maybe longterm plan would be for a chainlink dog run alongside your cabin.

  • @Vantasticviews2

    Possibly coyote? They are much more daring and live very comfortably around people. I’m on the outskirts of Seattle proper , in a truck camper at a park that is basically a greenway that follows the river. It’s a very populated area with regular human traffic- foot and vehicle. The other night my dog was acting a bit skittish too, and coyotes started howling so close- seemed like right outside my camper. My doggo went a bit crazy. One thing I’ve also noticed is that when I open the camper door to go out, the dog stands at the top of the steps and does a thorough sniffing before ever starting to come down. She’s cautious.

    • @AmandaOffGrid

      I think it was news to the owners that wolves may be full time residents of the island. I was definitely aware that sea wolves, bears and cougars were sometimes visitors... in the past these animals (other than wolves) just passed through and moved on to a different island. These particular wolves stuck around for awhile (haven't heard them in about a week, so am hoping they've moved on).

I spent a couple of months up in Washington state, on the Canadian border and I fell in love with it. Never seen any place so beautiful. You're so blessed to be where you are. If you ever decide to give that up, and they need someone, I'd love to take your place. Keep your dog safe. ❤

    Hi Amanda. Please get a gun and learn how to use it. Keep it on you at all times especially when our doors. Farmers/Ranchers shot warning shoots when they hear coyotes/wolves and it drives them away. Protect yourself and Peach. She is no match for wolves. Be safe ❤

    I hope the wolves don't become too much of a nuisance. I'm concerned for Peach as I'm sure you are as well. Is the owner ok with having wolves on his island?

      i don't think he loves it :), but there isn't much he can do. the animals were here first and it's their land, we're just livin' in it :)

    Poor Peach but yes, you must keep her safe. I would probably build multiple fires around the property to keep them away but that might be a stupid idea. Wolves are awesome animals but not in this situation. Hope you can start taking her to other islands on your sailboat soon, get away from wolfies.

    I have a wheaten terrier and she keeps barking at your dog and running around my cabin looking for her. She heard Peaches. Can you come clean my cabinet fast? I got a couple of very large trees that need to come down too. Can you bring your chainsaw and do it that quick as well? lol. Wishful thinking. I'd be happy to cut up the wood once you get it down for me. Lol. Enjoyed the video. I can smell the word from here.....😊

    It's true March is the Windy Month. Wolves, although canine, do like to kill and eat domestic dogs. They are easy prey. So are you. Take care of yourself out there ♥

    ...hey yall, question: how often (in your own knowledge) would/ does, a dog mate with a wild wolf (obviously, with people living way out, or cabining it with the pets .... thanks ❤SX

    Having a dog definitely puts you in danger with the wolves. Wolves will treat your dog as a wolf from another pack and will want to kill it. It there are resident wolves you should keep the dog on the leash. Have a gun.
