My uncle lived like this his entire life until. He lived in the Balkan mountains in a cabin that had no electricity. The only water he had was running water from the top of the mountain. The clothes on his back and his knife and gun. He was the happiest person I knew. R.I.P Adzo Ramo.

When I was 57, I moved to a state park in SC, set up a tent and lived there with my dog for a year...worked as a teacher at a school 12 miles away...few park visitors during the off season so we practically had the place to ourselves...camp fires and long peaceful walks...stars at night by the millions...when teachers at work found out where I lived, everybody either snickered about it or felt sorry for me...I always felt it was the best year of my life....there is nothing compared to serenity....nothing.

@@frankiebe4818 Off season would be any time after Labor Day and before Memorial Day weekend...left dog in friendly town vet's place and picked up after work. Winter was the best season for camping re: weather as in SC it can get chilly but seldom snows. Rains and at night the sound on the tent was very soothing...also, none of that damn SC heat and humidity!

Choosing to live like this is smart for so many reasons that I'm not gonna elaborate on. Let's just say that there are indications in this world, and have been for quite a while, that we need to step back and start living more independently with nature.

Isn't that selection bias, though? We only see the one's featured in videos. At least, I don't know anyone else living off grid. I don't know if the ones I see in video are a representative sample.

It's a cosy home that functions perfectly. Reminds me of my nana's cottage in Ireland. No running water so buckets were carried from the spring, bread made by hand daily. The food was all home grown and delicious. Something to be said for keeping it simple.
Not far from where i was born we have a park that has a museum in the middle which was a a family home for 400 years which was stolen from the church when King Henry the VIII, Put the majority to the sword,They were given the land in the 11th century made two lakes from the local stream kept cows and sheep and chickens,When they weren't allowed to "eat meat" which walked around on four legs,They ate fish and chicken Chicken wasn't meat because it only had TWO LEGS

I have to get out of this city I live in. It hurts my mental health, and I have been in therapy many times and even warded into an institution for a couple of days to help calm my mind. I feel this kind of life that she's living is where my heart lies.

Realize the video is an idealized version of this way of life. I also find the city causes anxiousness. Your personal problems will follow you but a smaller community can be helpful. Note 'community' instead of city. There is work everywhere for the willing. Isolation isnt the true answer but is a band aid. Try to stay active and eat whole foods instead of sugary processed crap. There is nothing wrong with you. Life is a rollercoaster so keep going and never give up. The best days are yet to come amigo

Go for a walk in the park or go for a simple hike bring some things in a backpack. Granola bars and water go for it.

For me it's tiny house basics, and a massive workshop.
I have over 300 books in my phone library. They are with me everywhere I go. (Not in the cloud either). The library in my office is almost obsolete. Eating the stuff in that jar everyday for breakfast would take me 11 years to accept. No coffee in this cabin... I love tea and coffee & bulk coffee is much cheaper than tea... I’m just saying this because we all “off grid” with different mindsets. The weather in the southeast United States is so mild that year round indoor and outdoor use is about 97% of the year. Very interesting to see this style and culture of living off the land. Now a days off grid doesn’t mean “survival” like it did a hundred and fifty years ago. There are serious creature comforts now. Love the insight of this video but that’s a hard life to just “step into” even though it’s beautiful - and it really is beautiful.
"Farstu" is a shorted version of what in modern Swedish would be "förstuga". In this case 'för' is the word 'före', before. 'Stuga' can be translated as cabin or cottage. So "before-cabin" / "fore-cabin", the cabin before you enter the real cabin.
I think 'mud room' is a good choice of word. The farstu's purpose was, IS, to protect the inner cabin from weather and wind. Not let rain, snow and cold air in, and make the heat stay inside.
At the same time it was a perfect place to leave muddy clothes and boots.
How many people live there?
As a rumanian who works in Sweden for 1 year now as telecom engineer been in a lot of places like this. I was always amazed by the peolple who chose to live in the middle of the nature. Whole clip is nice but the best part is at 20:16 and 22:10. I appreciate you a lot guys! Big hugs!
In my part of America, we might call the Fashtu a "utility room" since it serves multiple purposes, such as an entryway, storage room, cleaning room, and a room for feeding our indoor animals. Utility in English means useful and multi-purposeful. It has more use than just a mud room or foyer. I love your channel, thank you for sharing!
I think it's a covered porch. If it had windows it would be a Sun porch so porch I think.

yep very convenient actually. if you wanna cool drinks or something. about two weeks ago it was like -24 C here. i think a freezer runs at -18 C :)

question. I’m a city dweller, and we never keep food outside because it attracts animals.
@@bcotrell It do attract animals but mostly they try to avoid places where they hear human voices and smell human scent. Also how u storage food depends. When you put it in the basket and let it freeze less odor it will emit. Temperature you can adjust by burying things under compressed snow. Snow is good insulation so under thick snow things don't get so cold and also smells will attract animals even less.

Absolutely, the junk drawer keeps me sane, we have two kids, 14 and 7, and crap is always being left laying around. I often don't know what it is I'm looking at, goes to the junk drawer.

Life with a purpose is living everyday to the fullest. This is a very clear example of such conviction in a way that it connects with the natural world. Few are the ones who can do that, but it goes to show there is beauty in simplicity.

As a person who lives in the city centre I totally agree. Human beings werent made to live alongside concrete and huge, towering buildings. It's in nature we truly belong.
When I think of the monstrously wrong direction we have gone in, (which is quite often), I see that it was and continues to be at the behest of powerful and greedy men who set the standard for masculinity = toxic. We haven't had balance since the madness took hold a long time ago. We desperately need more women like Tova to get us back to a good place because sadly there are women who believe in the wrong direction. We also need the men like Adzo Ramo who is fondly remembered by Night Kruzer. I believe a fundamental question all human's need to ask is what exactly do we want to achieve for the benefit of all humans, our planet and it's other inhabitants.
I can't believe some non-thinking person asked if you have baby proofed the cabin. What I see are 2 wonderful people with their baby next to them being spoken to in a soft and loving way. Yes, baby proofing is not necessary if you teach your children.I never had to babyproof my home.
Baby proofing is only needed for people who don’t watch their children constantly. I had four sons and never baby proofed or moved anything. I watched them and taught them what not to touch.
Fantastic video... Your calm voice and unique accent made me feel I was there, I could feel the quiet, peace and joy of your lives.
It makes me think. .After years of immigrating to Canada, with housing prices through the roof (like from 10 to 20 times my yearly salary) and rent increasingly unaffordable, I´m strongly considering a similar lifestyle by constructing my own little home and living rent free. Current technology allows us to live completely off grid. I´m getting old and need to work on that.

Visiting the library and happened across your video. I have been off grid in a cabin for almost five years - ALONE. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I asked for this. The world moves too fast for me. I found that many old dresser mirrors brightened the place up reflecting candles, giving psychological space, and helps with having motion inside the cabin which is me, myself, and I. We get along with one another much better now. I particulary liked your answers as to why you made this choice. I have several of my own; but more important is that I never want to go back to what is normal living. Thank you for sharing your deeply inexplicable existance. Touched.

I also live alone in the woods. Ok, with two cats and sometimes with three children. And I would never cope without electricity, I think. Once you get used to the lifestyle, it is unthinkable to move to a city again. We are not created to deal with all these distractions.
As strange as it sounds, you can just feel the love emanating from that little cabin and it’s occupants. From the cats, to the precious baby and everywhere in between, that home is full of love and respect.

It sounds a lot cooler than it is. Winter was brutal. Yes.. there was a wood burning stove.. but..
No. Wouldn't trade my brick house with a basement and central heat and air for it. I prefer having a toilet and shower inside the house, too.
Simple living = no stress = peacefulness = better health and contentment. I love your lifestyle

I lived for a month like that. It was challenging but do able. It humbles one, who are use to living in this modern worldly society. Actually it is applaudable for people who are living permanently.

It's interesting how in the most luxurious and expensive "mansion" presentations you rarely see a book, yet this cabin as small as it is, there's a half-wall of them.

Because they are smart and buy ebooks.
Also books (reference books, text books, etc) get outdated fast or there is a new version or an update. And only pretentious people stack tons of books to show off how "well read" they are. Plus the only books that are worth buying and storing are classic novels, story books, fictional books, etc. The kind, if you have too many, shows that you have nothing better to do in your life than read someone else's thoughts and dreams.

I think it has to do with lifestyle. The rich, or "well-to-do" are typically going to be more used to highly stimulating types of entertainment, as they have more access to it than most people. Things like private home theaters, electronic gadgetry, large social circles of people, and the means for frequent travel. At this point, your brain is retrained to require that level of stimulation to achieve satisfaction from entertainment.
For others, whether it's through self control, or monetary ability, are going to be more centered. Books for this type of person are actually very stimulating sources of entertainment, typically because they haven't spent their days dowsing their brains with dopa through internet usage, and video games. That's not to say you can't still enjoy reading if you take part in these things, but subjectively the person who hasn't formed those mental pathways will find more satisfaction through less stimulating activity.
The majority of us exist somewhere between the two.

David Lewis... I totally agree with you. It is unbelievable that anyone would question this couples choice, of how they live their lives. I watched the video, but felt I was intruding into their private space, etc. Some people are just inconsiderate, nosy and interfering... With no regard for others privacy or choice!

@david lewis, as a matter of fact, we can all live with a little less useless stuff from now on, just by being aware of it.
But we cannot all live the 'Talusbuan' way if we would like, we are just with to many..
For the knowledge to live like this, we shouldn't forget that maybe 7% of the modern population would survive this way, others don't have a clue..
In the past, much of this basic knowledge was lost, due to famine and plagues, which costed millions their lives, and the natural solutions for health where gone with them.
This dip in knowledge, is filled up with our modern solutions, and we should be happy with that, use them both ways, sensibly.
To me it isn't thàt strange to question this way of life, giving up the comfort, cost a lot of energy in order to survive, and then limits other creative expression's which you might have.
And I am happy for them to grab this opportunity as it passed by, and share the videos with us who couldn't do.
In this way we might both become more aware.:-)

Tranquility, slow pace of life, time to yourself and with no distractions when you pursue your personal interests. The sound of your fire going while you read and drink a cup of tea or cocoa. Paradise. I'm someone who loves my personal space and my privacy; I would get used to that so fast.
If everyone lived in a cabin there wouldn't be books and cocoa in the first place. You can't have cocoa farms, schools that teach you to read, publishers who print books, and stores selling the cocoa and books if everyone is living in a cabin in wilderness.
The cabin is full of modern products that can only be produced in factories by people who've enjoyed modern education for years. If she has a husband and sleeps with him it means she's using modern contraception. If one of them gets seriously ill or injured they'll go to a hospital. They aren't self-sufficient at all, they just live in a place where they can't see the civilization that's providing for them.
@@MargaritaMagdalenaYou don’t need to give up absolutely everything. You find a nice middle ground. We need to go back to nature, but we can still have nice things, that aren’t so demanding on our environment.
I live the same way in the US, in the center of a city in an old Victorian built in 1902. We are truly blessed, those like us. I don't have solar power yet so I use a generator to produce whatever electricity I need to charge everything. I'm 63 years old and have had this lifestyle 12 years. No one has ever asked me why, but I would tell them that it was my choice, and that I'm happy this way. It's all about the quality of life.

Just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. I am living with my 2 dogs in a kind "Circus Wagen" made of wood since 3years without running water, but a good stove and I have electricity. In Germany it is hard to find a place and it is not allowed to live off the grid. Videos like yours are always a big inspiration, what else is possible. I love all the books in your house. I am looking forward to watch more of your videos.

Since august 2016 i live in trailor in the bushes. I have a little goat farm, with chickens, rabbits and three dogs of my own and one strayed dog. I understand you, sister and i admire you. I could easily live like that for the rest of my life. Only, i have sun povered electricity all the time. Greetings from Bosnia

This. I moved to Chicago and it is busy. Went to CA for a semester in the suburbs. It has hills, but it is not the country side. I got creeped out. Because when I walked the streets I hardly saw anyone...it felt like those zombie apocalypse movie where you're walking on a lonely road and the zombies will come and get you soon. But, I slept like a baby at night! So quiet. I forgot what real peace and quiet was.

Eh, it depends on where you live. I spent two years in a trailer in a rural wooded Alabama (long story), and it was at least that quiet - in rural Alabama the main sound I remember was rain and animals.
I imagine that if you live near Stockholm or something, it's probably about as noisy as a large American city (I assume, I've never been to Sweden, so I could easily be wrong).

I just found this vid, what a great example in simplistic living. I live in rural New Zealand aiming to pare back material requirements in a practical sense. This is a fun journey to gently step away from materialism.

In a German children's story; "Master Eder and his Pumuckel" there is a line where they are showing their small home and the visitor comment is that "it is very small"! The Pumuckel replies:" Happy people don't need such big homes because they don't need to avoid each other, so often" That, stuck with me for 40 years! I embrace your choices, there is a natural flow/order and harmony. When you are sharing a meal, together in the home, with the animals, there is a sense of exquisite balance/inclusion..being held in each others arms-feeling, that comes across in the videos as well. this reminds me of my childhood in rural Canada. We also used candles for light and a woodstove for cooking and heating. We didn't have running water so had to bucket it from the well. Its definitely harder than it looks!

Thanks for the tour, I grew up in the wilderness, 14 years in isolation and we never relied on stores for food or clothing. We made everything by hand, clothing, leather items you name it.

I love your home and the location. I live in a converted horsebox which is built inside entirely from wooden pallets, over a hundred pallets were dismantled, sanded and oiled, it took a few weeks. I live on a farm in the UK so like you in the winter we don't get much solar power, so I bought a wind turbine that gives 600 Watts of power and I'm going to make a water wheel for the stream, using a car alternator. I'm a beekeeper which replaces sugar. I have chicken's and ducks for eggs and meat. I have a milking nanny goat called willow and a log pulling horse that also is ridden and pulls a cart. I'm a tanner so any animal i eat gets skinned and tanned and made into clothes, knife pouches and belt pouches. Nothing goes to waste as any bones or antlers are made into coat hooks, rune set's etc. Like you my two dogs live under the bed and they are both lurchers and have a job, they help with the hunting. My cat also, she keeps the rodents under control. I have a log burner which is toasty and stays lit all night. There is no other way of life for me, I've lived like this for 13 years and could never go back. People think I'm a little mad because i ride around in full viking clothing but that's okay, it gives them something to talk about 😂and makes people smile and ask me questions. In my spare time I'm learning to play the bowed lyre, I'm getting there. Thank you for sharing your journey. I also forage herbs and fungi and make tea's, tinctures and potions and grow all of my own fruit and vegetables. Simple life, can't beat it ✌️

We met in college here in the U.S. Her smile, her laugh, her eyes and ancient instantly attracted me to her. Her personality and endless stories of Sweden made me fall in love with her. I made a promise to come see her in Stockholm when I finished school. I kept that promise and spent the a summer traviling throughout Scandinavia with her. Sadly, my visit came to an end, as my family needed me back home. I miss Ulrika dearly and the beautiful countryside of Sweden!!!! TACK!

No library is complete without Terry Prachet!! My youngest daughter and I lived in a cabin a little smaller than yours, for 10 years when she was younger. Every item had to have 2 purposes or we couldn't keep it... We did have a wonderful little wood cook stove that could heat us right out of our cabin at below 0° f.
Many adventures winter and summer here in the Colorado Rockies with our two dogs and a cat that loved to go hiking with us (even in the snow!). It is so important for children to be in reality in the wild. I wouldn't change those 10 years for anything. I understand everything you are doing, and doing well!!💜👵

I've noticed some youtubers here in the USA who profess to live "off grid" in the "wilderness" all seem to have brand new stuff, trucks, atv's, chainsaws, pots, cooking stoves, thermal clothes and bedding and either go out for supplies or have them brought to them. It's like they moved a full service motel room into the woods for a holiday. I grew up poor in Michigan winter's and we would put newspapers, overcoats and whatever we could find onto our beds to stay warm in our unheated upstairs bedrooms that always had ice on the inside of the windows. I was about 10 when I woke up one night with a mouse shivering near my head, I just went back to sleep. We canned vegetables, laid in cabbage and carrots in a hole in the ground, butchered one of my grandfathers pigs, and went to the woods for our firewood. We had an outhouse until 1964 and heated water on the stove to take a bath in the kitchen. I played all sports in school just for the showers. I don't mind those youtubers doing what they want but please stop pretending you are "roughing it".
I understand what you're saying, thank you for sharing your experiences! It's a hard life when you're truly 'roughing it' and it does seem a little on the nose when people who are clearly very wealthy and can afford everything they need claim to be roughing it (like the US youtubers you speak of). They're doing it by choice, not necessity! When I was young we lived in a trailer that was parked into an old silage pit so the vegetables would grow spectacularly!! They were mostly grown in large plastic rubbish bags though as the pit would get mushy in the rain - the soil was so good though. The pit was in the middle of miles of farmland and we'd have to walk over an hour just to get to the car. We had a tin bath outside with a fire underneath it to warm the water, and mum would wash us kids in it then wash the dishes, then wash my little brother's cloth nappies. It was also used for washing our clothes. Mum had a nanny goat she'd milk every morning. I guess because I was very young I never noticed it as 'hard' but looking back, it would have been a pretty hard life for mum as she was a single parent with us two kids, living in the middle of nowhere with no electricity or phone or anything, and even to get to the car was a very long walk over farmland!! In my late teens I was on and off the streets for a while, so yeah I know there's a huge difference between having nothing and having to survive somehow, and being able to afford anything you want to live as _though_ you have nothing as many of the US 'off griders' do. I really enjoyed watching this video because her little cabin reminds me a bit of what the old trailer looked like before it was destroyed, and my dad later had a similar cabin in the woods with a longdrop outside, the cabin could only be accessed by crossing a river in your bare feet! - he was super poor too so all he ate was bread that he made and cooked on the wood stove, and drank his home brew beer. I have also experienced mice climbing into/onto the bed when it's so cold there are sheets of ice inside the windows, but once one crawled into my pocket while I was asleep and I woke up with it squished in there, I felt so bad Y_Y
People like you and I are lucky in a way, to have experienced something most people can't even imagine - it helps build character and gives us a greater appreciation of the things we have now, and I think gives us better survival skills in hard times. EXACTLY. I'm from the south of Spain and I hate when posh people from the city come to the countryside, most of them are foreigners, and pretend to live "as poor people". It makes me laugh. They all have Feng Shui and yoga in common, apart from last generation technology to record themselves living this "authentic lifestyle"... This seems to me like a Zara Home commercial or something similar. Ironically, all of these wealthy foreigners here, who come from the north of Europe, skip the part of "working from 6am to 6pm at 40°C in the countryside" in this new fancy philosophy they call "natural lifestyle" or "authentic lifestyle" or "bio- whatever".

Yeah same here. I have lived my whole life in this small village with no electricity during the day. Although truthfully, I stay on my phone all day mostly. (What can I say I'm still a teen lol.) But one of my favorite things of living here is showering with a cup and a bucket is so normal to me that normal showers 🚿 seem like a waste of water.
Edit: also its not like we're poor or non materialistic either, you probably wouldn't be able to tell us apart from those living city lives.
The simple answer to why you live this way is, "It makes us happy."
I grew up living like this. I got into the heating business because I never wanted to be cold again. So far it has worked.
As I get older, I find myself gravitating back to my roots.
Also, No matter how crappy your humble beginnings may have been, they harkens back; that’s part of survival. That’s the way were wired.
