Dr Frans Cronje: Don’t rule out ANC/DA Parliamentary coalition after 2024 Election

  • In a return to the BizNews studio after spending much of the past four months on the road, Dr Frans Cronje of the Social Research Foundation provides an update on optimism he exuded last time. Bottom line: Cronje is still upbeat and hasn’t changed his view that the 2024 Election will be a positive watershed for the nation. In this interview he shares perspectives shaped by both on-the-ground research with voters and some uncharacteristic reform-minded actions by South Africa’s ruling political party. Cronje’s long-range forecast: A possible Parliamentary coalition between the ANC and its closest rival, the DA - rather than the more popularly predicted ANC/EFF combine. Fascinating and topical with SA’s Watershed election little over 500 days away. He spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.

Just on the point of fixing elections : I used to work as an party election monitor for the DA, and I can assure you that our election system is impossible to rig to any substantive degree. This is baked right into the entire system of checks and balances that we use when conducting elections.
Rigging one polling stations' results would be incredibly difficult, and rigging enough polling stations to change a overall election result is impossible.
One of the best safeguards we have is the various party monitors who jealously guard the votes at all the voting stations in the country. The party monitors watch the votes being cast and when they are counted, and so the parties can independently tally all the votes in the entire country. Any significant deviation between what the parties directly observed at the voting stations and the results announced by the IEC will immediately trigger alarms.

As a FF+ party agent, I can confirm this. I have more confidence in the integrity of our elections than that of the USA. And if there is one good thing about the EFF, its that there party agents checking out the ANC in places where they otherwise might have gotten away with shenanigans. The biggest threat to our democracy now are changes to the electoral system. This nonsense about voting for individuals rather than parties is a major red flag, and people calling for "direct elections" will inadvertently drag us back to a two party system. One of the best things that happened in 1994 was that we adopted the proportional electoral system. Yes, it has its flaws, but it is also literally the difference between us and Zimbabwe.

@@stlouisix3 Actually, in South Africa the DA that I worked for is libertarian center-right, while the FF+ the other commenter worked for are conservative.
The South African election system is very well designed by international standards and is far superior to the American one.
For example, you can't vote in any election without providing ID and having your name on the voters role. Both of these will be checked at the voting station before a ballot paper is issued. The Jan 6th stuff-up the Americans has simply can't happen here.

Then you are not serious about governing or our saving our country. The DA will NEVER win national elections because the majority of the electorate don’t like their policies. They reached their maximum support. The only way the DA will govern nationally is in coalition with the ANC. There is not enough small party support to form a national government and it’s always better to work with one coalition partner then with many. A DA/ANC coalition is the best case scenario for this country. Be serious.

I disagree strongly with your thoughts towards a return to any armed liberation struggle. The ANC is dying a slow and agonising but natural death. The ANC is bleeding voters. It's a natural death and not a demise through usurping by a more inspiring, savy opposition political party. Frankly another big problem is that the DA and other contender parties posses no inspiring gravitas of ideas to win non-sentimental loyalists at all at the moment. I surmise that DA, ANC and EFF are all parties of passé politics (still typified by race, non-racialism ad nauseum) whose death knell will be sounded by misrule and corruption resulting in failure to deliver on basics. I last voted ANC pre- prez-Zuma. As my pre-democracy generation incrementally continue to vote away from ANC, also, disgruntled RSA youths are increasingly abstain from voting. I am at a loss at the moment who to vote for, but I know I am not voting either visionless EFF or hapless DA, most certainly not rudderless ANC in any foreseeable future.

TEAL system( total economic activities levy) 1% of total banking transactions to generate taxes. This system will generate 25 to 27 times more in taxes apparently. Scrap all other taxes.
