That’s what I do, proper tests ! I wouldn’t worry at the signal dropped actually - the reason for this is that despite the red indicator the drone and video feed were there all the time and that’s the most important thing. I knew it would do that even before I filmed it but I expected more of a judder to the feed but no it was clear and quite impressive. Thanks for watching and your comment
Great video. I would like to see you do the same test on the Mini 4 Pro with your transmission settings set at “Both” to see if the drone is smart enough to switch and stay at the 5G spectrum when you get to that week area.
Things like that will certainly come in time, for this test it was important to just take any switching out of the equation but I agree it is a test that needs making
Excellent test friend, long awaited by me. I am a happy owner of a Mini 2 with which I do a lot of "long range" (between 7 and 8kms / 14-16kms round trip) and it really fascinates me to see how far it can go even though it has been on the market for several years. . I see then that the signal has finally changed in a significant way, thank you for the excellent material and for continuing to fly the beloved Mini 2 (for me, the "little beast") Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina!
Nice to know that you can use the 5.2GHz band in the UK. We don't seem to have that option in Australia. The transmission screen looks just like the Mini 3, with the 5.8 GHz option rather than the 5GHz option. FYI on my own testing, the mini4 performs no better than the mini3 in Australia. Not sure if there's a way to enable the 5.2GHz band here
6:30 - In this situation, where the drone can't RTH because still 'kinda' connected to the controller, but you can't control it, the best thing to do is to actually TURN OFF the controller. This will completely sever the signal and make the drone go RTH. Once you see the drone flying back home, turn the controller back on and the connection (and your control) will be restored.
Mini 3 Pro served me well, Mini 2 did too. Mavic Mini was my first one and it’s still in my fleet. So at the moment I am trying hard to not yet update. 🤣🤷🏼♂️
You could always place the drones on a high point at your house and either walk or drive with the controllers to see how far you can get before the live feed drops. This will allow you to go beyond VLOS as you won't actually be flying. Remember to either take the Props off and/or set return to home to Land otherwise it might take off when signal is lost 😊
It would be great to get a test between the Autel Evo Nano (series) and the Mini 4 Pro. That the Mini 3 Pro has a miserable connection, everyone should be clear, but how is it now with the new (Mini 4 Pro). Can you make such a test?
Another cracking video there Gavin, I was thinking back to the days in the late 70's when we had CB Radio, certain built up areas had dead spots that was well before the days of WiFi & Mobile phone signals. Back then we were using 4 watt transmitters.🙂
When the mini 3 pro launched I immediately said the only way you improve on this is waypoints, 360 OA and a better connection. Here we are, I don’t think you will see a huge difference in picture quality over the mini 3 but you will over the mini 2. In short, if you got one I can’t imagine you will need to upgrade for a fair while
Nice video Gavin, I upgraded from the mini 3 pro to the mini 4 pro and so far I'm very happy with my choice, I had issues with the RC controller and mini 3 but happy to see this test

Cheers for the update gavin look forward for some more videos on the mini 4 pro 😁👌👍🇬🇧
Indeed mate! Excited for you to get it! The autel has a rock solid connection as you have found but the mini 4 pro performed the same as the autel, I’m sure you will be super happy, which controller did you go for?
Interesting test and a good explanation. In the situation where the signal is dropping in and out, you could just turn off the controller to force a RTH 🙂
I tested the range just today between my mini 2 und my mini 4 pro. Lost the signal with the mini 2 at about 950-1000m, with the mini 4 pro the signal begann to drop at about 2800-3000m (still had signal and full control). I didn't loose signal on the mini 4 because i returned home before. So I have at least 3 times the range compared to the mini 2!
I would fully expect those results yep! I often do find faults with drones at the launch but to be fair O4 is as good as I thought it would be - plus remember i have been flying the Air 3 so thats greatly improved also :)

I've found that my Mini 2's are only limited in range because of battery life. I've been out to almost 4 miles then barely made it back before it died. I've flown over a good part of the U.S. Midwest and live on the Coast in SoCal. I can even [but I don't] fly up to the fence line of the Marine Base. Hight? Same thing. I keep it below 400ft. BUT...I was in the Desert and went to 1550ft with No issues. The Mini 2 can also handle 38mph winds and still stay pretty stable. I'll sell my oldest Mini 2 and add a 4Pro combo now..😁

Very useful vid thanks Gavin. Didnt realise wifi was a big factor in interference. Ive had lots of bother my mini 3 pro losing signal. On one occasion, having set the home point manually it lost contact during a flight and decided to return to the previous home point 5 miles further south. Fortunately as it began its flight I regained contact and was able to cancel the RTH and fly it back manually! This is the main reason I am about to purchase the Air 3 for ocusync4 however I might now also purchase the mini4 pro? I like its front landing legs. best wishes Jon

If I buy one in the UK, will it use the more powerful signal if I take it to the USA? 🤔 And... If not, and I buy in the USA, would that version automatically use the more limited legal signal strength when in the UK? Cheers Gavin 🙂👍
Hi Lindsay - so, signal power geofenced, in short it’s the same drone sold everywhere but when it’s flown in the US based on its gps location it knows that FCC power came be applied, so if you bought one in the US as soon as you came to the UK it would then reduce to the lower CE power. Hope this helps :)
I’m not sure if it’s possible for the mini 4, but there’s a hack the an be done for the mini 2 and 3 that boosts the signal strength output. Do a search for it and you’ll probably find it. It’s just a matter of either downloading the file or copying the file on to your memory card and starting up the drone and then the file does an update to your main board firmware. It also gives you an extra channel, at least it does with the AVATA and I have heard of it being available for the mini 2 & 3. If there isn’t one yet, there should be one available soon.

@@GAVINHR hi, this 5.2Ghz, is that new and restricted to drones etc or will home wifi soon pollute that? Cam you spoof the mini 4 into FCC mode with a GPS app? Thx
@@teethtrainsandcameras2668 you can get fcc apps from drone tweaks, that works with the mini 4, 5.2 isn’t a new frequency but it’s unlikely from my point of view to be on WiFi routers anytime soon - people are only just switching to the 5.8 channel. Autel have been running on 5.2 for years and get a great signal also
Hmmm, I'm not sold. OS1,2,3 & now OS 4 are all marketing buzzwords. Granted, the Mini 4 now has front legs now and the controller has external antennas so maybe that has helped the transmission? I've flown these since the Phantom 2 and coupled with CE regulations, the signal here is utter cack and when I compare against the range of DJI drones I've flown, they're all about the same. When I tricked the Spark and Mavic Air and Pro into FC mode, they flew ridiculous distances, congested locations or not.
All the newer owners complaining about range on 3 , 4 etc etc , never experienced just how poor range was on DJI's first early early drones , we never had any avoidance , video feed or maps , think yourselves lucky things have moved on so quickly 🤣
I tried a test like this, I live in the countryside and there are a few houses around me, it was a little windy and I lost signal (scared the absolute c**p out of me) after about 500 meters, there was a house in the way but I was not expecting to lose signal so quickly.
and 1 didn't lose connection - which is the ultimate goal, warnings on screen are irrelevant the important thing is keeping the control and video link whish O4 did
I always try my best, I know this stuff very well which is why I try explain whats going on and why these things make a difference rather than just showing the result! Thank you for the kind words
I am shocked at how poor the range is at CE power levels. I would be much less enthusiastic about drones if I had to deal with those limitations. Here in the states I fly out 30,000+ feet with ease.
Ich denke das liegt an den Controllern obwohl meiner Meinung nach dieses Test vernachlässigbar ist. Mit dem RC Pro, kommt man bestimmt auch auf die Weite der Mini 4 Pro, was der eine oder andere hier schreibt.
Your conclusion that OccuSync 4.0 is better based on a single environment is highly misleading. What you can say is that in your specific scenario/environment, you have had a more successful connection.
There is no other conclusion - if O4 handles this much interference on a less congested channel then there is no reason to believe it won't be better in any other scenario. If you can advise a scenario where you believe it will not be the case I can happily test that.

Autel have been running on 5.2 for years and get a great signal also
@@GAVINHRmy wifi bt router can operate on 5.2ghz frequency.
It isnt because 4 pro got the N2 controler ? and the 3 got N1
Have you got the mini 4 or 3?
@@jc2685 Mini 4 Pro
I'm not sure if that is a valid test. Massage: All Systems struggled at that pacific indifferences (Strong Routers with 2,4 and 5,8 Ghz)
and 1 didn't lose connection - which is the ultimate goal, warnings on screen are irrelevant the important thing is keeping the control and video link whish O4 did
You know what's freaking hilarious?
Autel already figured this out with skylink years ago- that's why it was always slightly better then O2
Yep! 👍 as mentioned in the video!
Fantastic. You Gavin are the epitome of useful information provider! Always look forward to your content. Brave heart accent and ALL!🤣🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏽
I always try my best, I know this stuff very well which is why I try explain whats going on and why these things make a difference rather than just showing the result! Thank you for the kind words
judging how far you loose the signal, you got an obstacle in front of you very probably.
I am shocked at how poor the range is at CE power levels. I would be much less enthusiastic about drones if I had to deal with those limitations. Here in the states I fly out 30,000+ feet with ease.
Agreed. It sucks.
Ich denke das liegt an den Controllern obwohl meiner Meinung nach dieses Test vernachlässigbar ist. Mit dem RC Pro, kommt man bestimmt auch auf die Weite der Mini 4 Pro, was der eine oder andere hier schreibt.
But...I did not disclose which controllers I used in this video?
worth mentioning youre at 70 meters on the second test but 50m on the third..
That’s the return to home height :) the height it had ascended to before the feed came back
@@GAVINHR ah makes sense :)
I'm so glad it managed to complete the course of doom Gav. Now for a range test dooooh 🤦♂️
Hahahaha you know I can’t post things like that now! I’m still debating if I should post that mavic mini one as a final farewell
@GAVINHR hmmm depends on how lucky your feeling I guess.
Give it a few week of constant updates, till everything starts dropping off
i found the mini 4 better to the mini 3 pro lost all signal at the end of the garden
Yep 100% it will be better in every way for signal now !
@@GAVINHR i just fly over Clacton pier and can be bad there drone battered by the wind but returned to home ok still
Not interested in this drone at all. Mini 3Pro and Mavic 3 CLASSIC both perfectly fine. Happy flying.
Yeah not for everybody and the mini 3 pro and classic are a great combo!
Makes me wonder what is causing the signal interference at the exact same spot EVERY time? Secret government citizen monitoring location?? 😅
Even if it’s not that… can we pretend? Sounds a cool explanation
Who gives af what the neighbors want. People walk and drive by their houses everyday whats the difference let thwm be paranoid
Buddy, charge your battery fully before doing the test lol
👍first
Soo can you just purchase one from the US to be a little naughty 😉
It's just WiFi 😂 who knew.... have to love good marketing.
I like the part where your Chinese drone orbits in front of the British warship and neither blows up...peace on earth?
Your conclusion that OccuSync 4.0 is better based on a single environment is highly misleading.
What you can say is that in your specific scenario/environment, you have had a more successful connection.
There is no other conclusion - if O4 handles this much interference on a less congested channel then there is no reason to believe it won't be better in any other scenario. If you can advise a scenario where you believe it will not be the case I can happily test that.
