Not sure if that would make much of a difference, because what ultimately led to their retirement was the structural integrity of their car body frame, which was built with carbon steel. During the graffiti era, most subway cars undergone acid treatment, in which some of it was said to have leaked into the car body frames, and thus causing frame rot. The general overhaul was done to replace electronic and mechanical components, but not necessarily change anything with respect to the car body itself, minus some small aesthetics on the exterior. It was determined right before their early retirement that the structural integrity of their car body frame may not last long for most of the fleet, before something serious can happen. Nice. I’ll never forget the times I rode the R44 (A) train. Although it sucks now that the R44s retired 1 to 3 years early, it’s a good thing the R46s has survived 2 to 5 extra years to make up for the amount of time used up by the structural issues that could’ve been addressed on the R44s back then. Although the R44s have their own share of issues, they’ll still remain as part of our childhood and will always be known as one of the the legendary (A) train fleets
I miss the r44s so bad...BTW at the 1:37 mark before the A approaches in front of the camera. What was that r42 set while hearing the speaker saying running on the F line, Bergen St next stop..Was that train rerouted?
I miss her so much. I think about her, the R32 (still can’t watch Mr. Happy Brightliner without crying), the R38 twins, and the R40S. And now her twin sister, R46, I’m enjoying while she’s still here.

I miss riding the r44 on the A. plus the r32 and r38.

@@NYLifeInNJ it would have. The overhauler warned about the bad structural quality when it was getting overhauled but it fell on dead ears
I’m not sure if it would’ve stayed because the conductors hated the cab of how narrow it was and it was rusted and couldn’t run
The 2000's was just amazing
Exactly!
I never realized the difference between the two until someone pointed out the gray line. These have that glass panel also
The R46 also had these, they were removed during GOH.
I grew up riding these. I miss that brake release sound and how fast these cars still were even after the field shunt mods!
