- A few of you have asked me to take a look at Post Malone's cover of Nirvana, I chose his version Heart Shaped Box as it's one of my favourite Nirvana songs. I have never heard any of Post Malone's songs before, and no little about him apart from that he is a very successful rapper and hip hop artist. I wasn't expecting much from this...but I have to say this is not what I was expecting at all. Is this man actually a rockstar disguised as a rapper?! What's going on?! He needs to stop doing what he's doing now and start rockin' out!

Should he stop doing rap immediately, quit his day job and join us in the world of rock n' roll?!
Have been thinking that since he did the song with Ozzie! He’s also a great guitarist IMHO
Yes
He has an old cover of “Don’t think, twice it’s alright.”
I’ve wanted him to get into bluegrass man.
Do some stuff with Billy Strings.
I loved this performance. We still rewatch it regularly. I would love love love if he turned his talents to rock for a while!
Yes...
I'm not a fan of Post Malone's music but I'm a fan of Post Malone. I like the respect he shows to his fans which is much more than a host other famous musicians do. He seems a good guy. If he did rock music I'd probably be a fan
Same
Recommended this to loads of people and, they're too scared or anti post malone to give it a go. shame.
He's super talented and seems to be an awesome guy, I almost feel bad saying I don't like his music.
Agreed. Same with Hawkins. I absolutely hate his music/vocals, but has a great ear for other music.
Same… I wanted to hate Post when he first came out. Been 5 years? He’s actually talented and seemingly genuine nice guy. Don’t like his music really but I do like him as a legit human being
That livestream was what led me to being a Post Malone fan. He absolutely killed it.
Also, they did the most Nirvana thing possible: they didn't play Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Same here 👍🏻
IMO any Nirvana cover band should do Teen Spirit and do it proud. Forget this Radiohead "Creep" or Oasis "Wonderwall" shit. We're past that point. You can play Teen Spirit. It's a good song. It put Nirvana on the map. And the thing is, it's not just a testament to Kurt, but it is to what his life was at the time he wrote the song, and it's also like this major point for Dave Grohl like... on the global scale, Grohl literally drums himself into scene here. For people who were already fans of Nirvana or the huge wave that followed... to underplay Smells Like Teen Spirit really is folly. It's an amazing song. Is it Nirvana's best song? Yes. Yes it is. No, it's not your favorite Nirvana song, but that doesn't matter. Teen Spirit propelled Nirvana into the stratosphere and gave us everything to come. Even the absence of the song in their Unplugged sitting speaks volumes. So I say, to skirt around Teen Spirit is bullshit. It should be embraced. Maybe it's not-for you-Nirvana at its finest. But it was the time. The song channeled the essence of its time that few other songs do. And that should be celebrated.
Teen spirit is a great song, and launched the new wave the media labeled grunge. I completely agree any cover band should play it and do it proudly.
Nevermind is mid
@TadRaunch can't imagine with a straight face trying to pretend Teen Spirit is even close to Nirvanas best song. Most commercially successful? Hands down. Best? Only to actual crackhead or people who don't know the bands discography
It was a pandemic live stream, and they absolutely killed it. I admittedly never cared much for posty’s music before this, but he earned my absolute respect with this performance, and it was needed at the time.
And he's playing with punk rock musicians, so there must be something to it. 👍
He'll be chuffed to hear this
Did you see his bud light set with Slash, Chad Smith etc covering Alice in chains and Black Sabbath?
@@jaredwilson28 exactly. That war pigs cover is an uncanny reproduction of the original. Post malone was definitely influenced by lots of music, including rock/metal for sure, but it’s like he was channeling young ozzy during that sabbath cover… ridiculous
@@SamSitar99he started in a metal band and only started doing rap and pop after it fell thru
Post had auditioned to play guitar in the Christian metalcore band Crown The Empire and was a hang around of the Texas hardcore scene before he tried to play country for a bit and then switched to rap. He can play guitar and he can do aggressive / metal vocals.
He should just go full rocker.
Mr. Hawkins. Just want to say that your style, humor, honesty and positive disposition are both a delight and an inspiration. You deserve every success with your new channel. Cheers!
Post is one of those guys that you cant help but to love even if you arent a fan of his music. I seen this whole show he did and he killed it. You can tell he is an actual fan of Nirvana and not some poser trying to do it. Have you seen that video clip where a little girl asked for his guitar and he gave it to her, even though he said it was one of his favorites. Awesome guy
The fact he started that set with Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle and not Teen Spirit or another radio hit deserves respect.
Post just seems like a great guy. I remember being shown his cover of “don’t think twice” and realizing his influences went way further than his singles might indicate
Same..
I couldn't stop watching that video when I first found it. He's super talented.
Every time i see someone say something like this it just reminds me how reductive people are of rap/hip hop.
@@cameronharvey4746 yeah a lot of people tend to write it off as "not real music", but there's a lot of great stuff out there. I'm mainly a punk rock fan, but I'd never write off an entire genre. I even like the country set Post played with Sturgill Simpson. There's been a bit of a resurgence of solid country music happening for the last few years, and I'm here for it.
That same clip got me too. Also I learned that he has Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and another OG country legend tattoos on his knuckles
The first time I saw this I gained a lot more respect for Post. I’m not a huge rap/hip hop fan, but he is clearly a musician in every sense of the word and I love watching his guitar stuff. He’s a Gibson guy too, like me haha, and there’s a video of him checking out SGs in a shop and doing little licks here and there. Dude can play for sure.
@ghost mall idk, could just be me. But the video Mr Hawkins reviewed showed he can clearly play and not bad, at all. Is he EVH? No, of course not. But he likes guitar music and so do I. Maybe that’s all it is.
Same, and I always respect a musician.
met him once at Chicago Music Exchange and he was eyeing a yellow Rickenbacker at the time. he’s got good taste.
Normans Guitar Store in LA. The best. They have a great IG and UA-cam account too for all guitar fans.
I played guitar quite a lot when he was younger and he can definitely play the guitar, it's not amazing but he does play it. I think his vocals are OK as long as he doesn't the weird vibrato thing
Post's more baritone / heavyversion of these Nirvana covers with his gravel and vibrato is superb. Really makes it his own and changes it up in a good way. The whole sets really worth watching. Post gets progressively more boozed throughout, and there's a good bit of banter between songs, but they're true to the cause and kick ass.
I appreciate artist's who don't just stick to one genre. Genre's are practically limitations, and when music is seen as music rather than cut up into little pieces, some great stuff can be produced.
If you adhere to genre that is. Like fugazi said -never mind what's been selling, it's what your buying
Agree. Look at Bjork and PjHarvey - both doesn't care about music genre and make awesome music between all genres. They do what they feel and doesn't care.

I'm a British rock snob as well, that being said, I do respect his musicianship.
From what I’ve read, Post was into Metal before hip hop, so he has had the chops for rock for a long time.
Never heard anyone else pull off Nirvana so well !!! We need to see waaaaay more of this version of Post Malone :)
I’m not a huge Seether fan but they definitely Nail it with the Nirvana covers though! Check ‘em out.
Heart shaped box is a cover

A lot of casual listeners wouldn't know the song "Pennyroyal Tea" but flaming lips do a great job covering it
The distorion carried him ngl
6:00 Gotta give it to Post. He's not holding back and he's not over shooting it either. He's actually nailing the chorus authentically with exactly the right amount of voice distortion
I live in Seattle, was there for the whole era both as a fan and musician , so when I heard about Post doing this I was both skeptical and dismissive . Both damn this was good. All of it. And I don't mean just for somebody of his genre. I mean it's just flat out GOOD. So are his country covers . Cat's got some chops for sure.
I remember this during the height of Covid, stuck inside and no shows here at home to go to. I wasn’t expecting much as I never heard any of his stuff. This session blew me away, also made me a fan of the drummer Barker who I also never heard before this. I go back to that video every now and again. It rips.
I remember watching it live... I was blown away by how good it was. I remember Dave Grohl talking about this performance and he called Krist Novoselic in order to watch it live as fire was being dropped right there!
I’m so happy you did this one!! I watched it live that day and was AMAZED by his whole performance!! You should watch the whole thing Justin! 😊
I remember watching it live. Didn't know much about Post at the time, but knew immediately he was a real one when he started the set off with "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle".
Nirvana + Post Malone = Post Nirvana
Post Utero
I remember tuning in to watch this live, not expecting much, despite being a very casual Post fan, and knowing his musical background. needless to say, I was floored as stuck around for the whole stream.
Same! The "Hey Whitney" or "Whitney" song was MY ONLY notion of him & I do like that one. At 44 & being 14 when NEVERMIND hit the world & BLEW ME AWAY + biased heavily to MY ERA of 90's grunge/music I was (IN RETROSPECT) COCKED AND LOADED TO GLEEFULLY DESPISE "HIS" take & epic failure of sullying Nirvana's hallowed imprint on the world for (in My mind BEFORE HE BEGAN PLAYING) "likes, retweets & attention on social media etc" in an epic hit of schadenfreude & disdainful confirmation how FAR HE'D MISSED THE MARK..... I found myself tuning into the entirety of the remainder of the concert and a POST MALONE FAN EVER AFTER & WAS PROUD OF HIS OBVIOUS LOVE FOR AN OLD LONG GONE MUSIC/BAND ❤️❤️.

I'm an admirer of his lack of egoism also!!
That is some fine role modeling in the world desperately needs all of us to
You really need to check out the Prince guitar solo with Tom Petty while playing "While my guitar gently weeps". It is truly epic. It was at the rock and roll hall of fame induction for George Harrison in 2004.
That's the coolest thing I've ever seen , the guitar just disappears when he throws it as welllol
Such an amazing performance, defintely worth a review
That was a great performance, Everyone has different taste in music but most of Prince’s music didn’t click for me. Obviously he was talented though.
Amazing story behind that solo, Prince was supposed to play both the solos but the sound was out and Jeff Lynn's guitarists kept playing over him...read it up.
@@cudd2287 where does that guitar go? 😂
I'm not a fan of Post's music, but I love him as a person, and frankly I think that's far more important for a person in his position. Its better to have hearts on your side, than just the ears. Keep being a good man Post, I hope you have a successful career and continue to keep that good mindset in you.
This is the first actual Post Malone anything I had ever heard, I literally watched the whole set with my mouth hanging open...they absolutely killed it! I have since checked out some of his other stuff and although its not my thing he has a great voice for this type of music not to mention the obvious guitar skills...I really hope you watch the other songs...soooo good 🙂

One of my favorites is him singing don't think twice it's alright. I think it sticks with me because I was so shocked! Never judge a book by its cover 🙏
Same. Check out his song "Feeling Whitney" i think its called.....
lol the title made me think Justin was about to talk shit about it, but then I remembered he's one of the few that always has something positive to say about music/musicians in the modern era.
Coolest nice guy in the game.
I remember when this air it was such a dark and weird time and this was so badly needed and so punk I loved it and I do believe Kurt Cobain would have loved it himself. And Dave Grohl was on record saying it was just awesome as well what more do you need? I think it was a solid set and again for a great cause during a dark time. Mad respect for Malone! Also thank you Mr Hawkins for the great job you did for Taylor Hawkins Memorial concerts. Phenomenal phenomenal vocals you have sir.
Never listened to this guy before but this cover is terrific!
Watch the whole stream, it's all fantastic, they don't miss a beat
Goddamnit Justin, you're so bloody entertaining! I can watch this for hours one end...
Hawkins leech sounds like a jazz musician from the 30s
The guitar sound and the harmony vocal on speed of the night time is a beautiful thing, definitely evokes an 80s nostalgia feeling, one of my favourite darkness songs.
I really enjoy your commentary. Just found this channel today. It’s insightful. And hilarious.
Thanks!
I didn't have a strong opinion of Post Malone until I watched this, extremely hungover on a Saturday morning. He's rad, I'd listen to more of these covers any time. I also love that he brought Travis in to play drums for this.
Cheers Justin I want to say that Ace Frehley was the one who popularized the toggle switch thing if you listen to kiss alive he does it throughout the whole performance
Hey Justin, have been a fan of you since I believe in a thing called love. Just came across your UA-cam channel, and you seem like such a genuine and open minded guy. Keep it up brother!

You should really watch this whole perfomance, It BLEW me away - Every song he covered is amazing and I feel like this is quite possibly the best performance I've seen from him.
I have never listened to Post Malone before, but damn, he really does belong in rock. Nirvana is one of those bands that to me is sacred, I always cringe when others try to "cover" them but this was terrific. Loved your commentary and take on this...agreed, he did a fantastic job.

@ghost mall Well that's it, obviously!
He's the first guy I've heard who manages to get the flat pitching of Cobain absolutely right. Quite a trick! Or maybe just talent.
Captain Beefheart shredded his voice by screaming on a hilltop whenever he had a cold. In his later years his illness betrayed his voice, but when he was healthy even his speaking voice was a thing of sepulchral wonder.
You know, I wasn't a Post Malone mumble trap or crossover fan, but somehow I watched this performance when it happened, at the time, and enjoyed it. Was during the confused covid scare stuff, so it was a nice distraction...
I found the stuff about how Nirvana got their guitar sound interesting. I play as a hobby and often find myself listening to a song and wondering how they got that sound. There is always a fun little fact or anecdote sprinkled into his topic that keeps me coming back to watch.
Travis the edging man lol
Justin I think the pedal you're talking about is the Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal.
Classic pedal!!
Hey Justin, so glad you got around to doing this. An incredible performance and he raised millions in charity. That's a class act. I absolutely love your vdeos. I'd love to see you do one on All Them Witches from Nashville, TN. An amazing blues/psychedelic rock band. I recommend Tour Death Song, 1x1, L'hotel Serein, Tiger's Pit, and Silver To Rust. You are just the best Justin. Been a fan ever since “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, ran out and bought the album the next day. Absolutely love your cheeky lyrics, especially “growing on me“. I have followed your sobriety journey, and it is so incredible. You truly understand music and you try to lift other artists up, but you aren’t above calling out ridiculous music when it is warranted. And because you support so many artists, nobody can ever label you a “Hater”. You perfectly replicate, vocal, melodies all the time on the fly with obviously, no auto tune, but really, no studio tricks whatsoever, no reverb, no delay, no EQ, no compression, that is just your voice. And it’s so good. I would love to jam with you.

I watched the Post Malone Nirvana set like a week after it happened in 2020 and I was blown away as well, but holy hell Justin, this video should have come with some kind of warning. I was sipping from a can of pamplemousse La Croix when you did that impression of the very specific vibrato, and I was not prepared for how funny that moment was. I spit water halfway across the room, which is always glamorous, but I also choked pretty hard and thought I was going to die for a second, which of course made me laugh even harder. So thank you for the much-needed endorphin rush, but that got a little bit scary for a second when I couldn’t breathe 🙃
Be interesting to hear what Pre Malone sounds like..
Great stuff, love it.
Post started his musical career as a guitarist in a metal band then went into hip-hop. He's a metalhead at heart. He's crushes a cover of RATM Killing in the Name.
Have you heard Denzel curry bull on parade cover.
Subbed. Geez…subbed Justin. You are adding so much value to this space, right up there with Rick Beato.
This is spot on. Generally I think Nirvana shouldn't be covered - for many reasons, not least Kurt Cobain's persona ingrained in each tune that I feel makes them untouchable BUT! If they are going to be covered, this is the way to do it. Everything about this is bona fide.
The main persona anyways
Justin the drummer will be fantastic. With the drums completely behind and over his head while still facing the crowd. If anyone can pull this off it’s you my friend. Cheers to Post and the other musicians. I watched this live it was unbelievably good. Everyone was going nuts in the live chat.
First interview i saw with him he did a megadeth cover. Earned my respect immediately. Also, he is a great human being.
