11:03 thing is, it's also fun to make characters who are more subtle, especially bigger characters, little soft giants that could be shy and subtle

Loved seeing you ding fanart. I have really tried to emphasize to young artists that having most of your design choices made for you doesn't help you design better characters, and that art directors and such are not going to be impressed by fanwork/anime motifs. Fanart is okay in the exploration stage and definitely teaches you how to steal in the "great artists steal" context, but there's no replacement for drawing from life and exploring your own shapework.
Lot of really nice work in these.
What's wrong with the Japanese Art style?
@@corvusmonedula Oversaturated, and an artistic crutch for many. Most people who draw "just anime" can't draw from life and have poor design skills. Sooner or later you have to let it go and start exploring. Anime makes all of your design choices for you and it shows. If you draw anime like all the other ten thousand submitting their portfolio, you're gong to give some things away about your skillset that might not make you look good.
EDIT: And also, when you say Japanese Art style, you're not talking about Edo sum-i-e.

You can say that about every style. No matter if cartoon, Tumblr style, comic, Disney, etc if you only draw in one style and never experiment you won't get very far with your art. Anime is great for getting people into art that's why so many people use it but like you said at one point you have to get out of your comfort zone to improve and grow.
With Japanese Art style I was referring to your comment about Anime, but I'm not sure why your asking since you talked about Anime in your response
@@corvusmonedula "It's biased to judge people just on that." I have bad news for you: art directors are biased. And unless you are specifically submitting your portfolio for anime character design, you're going to run into trouble.
You also said "What's wrong with the Japanese Art style?" in your previous comment, as if I was condemning all art from Japan instead of just anime. The two are not interchangeable. In fact, the majority of Japanese art is NOT anime, and I doubt the majority of anime enthusiasts can name pieces or styles outside of it.
My original comment said young artists need to move away from fanart and anime. The sooner the better. It's fine to have it as an influence, but don't submit it, as the person in this video literally says. If that's biased or unfair, well, you're already competing with the best professionals at the top of their game. That's not fair either, but it's reality.
Good point, though I think dinging anime as a whole is slightly unfair. I agree with your comment that it can be a crutch to compensate for poor fundamentals, but in that case the real problem lies in having poor fundamentals, not the style it’s packaged in. I’d say relying too heavily on any style without developing an artistic voice or draftsmanship is a bad idea, and it’s always beneficial to broaden your horizons and take influence from new things. So I’m not disagreeing with you outright, just thought I’d add a little bit of nuance to the discussion.

(I'm using google translate so sorry if the grammar is weird) I would like to know more your opinion about fanarts. in my opinion fanart like redesigns, a complex illustration with composition, or drawing media with real people is a good alternative for those who still don't have the copyright of their original characters and are afraid of having their work stolen. (aka me)
I also think that maybe drawing fanarts the way I said above also shows your inspirations and that you are aware of animation media too, because after all when we receive some work we will spend almost all the time drawing characters that are not ours .

I think if it exists as 2d art, fan art should stay off your portfolio. But canary is great and fun practice!

I´m 36 and I want to work in illustration. I start to learn recently, but I don't care if people says that I'm to old. So... do you have some advice to focus and improve? apart of practice =)
There really isent a time limit on art, dont get bogged down on other peoples critism unless its constructive. Im not a profetional but ive been drawing for a litle over decade now, i would say focus on compotision and perspective. Even if you are going for character design those two can really strengthen your art. In any case just make sure that you are having fun, i hope you get the job you want!
Does anybody knows of a course that teaches step by step how to design exagerated characters (in both pose and expressions)?

what does IP mean?
IP is an abbreviation of Intellectual Property, which is usually some form of copyrighted material, a design, a name, a setting, etc.
Like Homestuck is Andrew Hussie's IP. Banksy's works are his IP. Taylor Swift's songs are her IP. Middle Earth is the IP of JRR Tolkien. Superman is an IP.
I think japanese comics and anime blessed me with the ability to design highly creative and dynamic characters. American cartoons are generally painfully generic and I find them to be poor sources of inspiration/reference. Kinda remind me of cereal box characters just simply meant to convey a simplified human with nothing else to pop out for the viewer.
I disagree, I think they are both as dynamic and creative as the other, they are just for different cultures and people.

I totally get what you mean here and agree but anime as of late has been just as boring and generic. Perfect example is the original Digimon cast designs versus Digimon Tri.. Its a skill issue. Simple characters means easy drawing for less experienced animators, thus less money spent..
That's not necessarily true you have boring chracter designs and dynamic chracter designs in both mediums.

I feel like roasting someone only really works if the person doing the roasting is good at what they're doing? This feels like Amy Schumer level of "comedy" when doing a typical roast in comparison.
This isn't a roast; it's a critique of portfolio's submitted to this creator to get opinions on their work. You don't have to be good at something to be able to identify a problem and potential solution.
I'm glad people are still actually drawing but it all just looks like Cal Arts or globohomo.
OMG why aren't there woman , like our beautiful and talented host here, that find themselves in the places that I wonder. (Well she's probably being pretty and talented while practicing her skills at home) I always find the keeping up with the kardashians or cheaters super fans running up seconded only to south boston 'southie sober' chicks that only smokoe weed nows cause they are in A.A. sorry just a passing thought about the characters in my life
