Transcription:
The Costa Del Mar question I get asked the most is, "Would You tell me what the difference is between the 580P technology and 580G technology?
We are going to cover that, today!
The most obvious difference is always going to be the price. There is actually a $60 difference between the 580P and the 580G and sometimes $80 difference depending on if you're getting the Blue Mirror, Green Mirror, or the Silver Mirror.
If you look a little deeper we're going to definitely appreciate that if "Price is What You Pay, and Value is What You Receive" and I do have to tell you that the 580G Glass is worth it. If you can pay a little bit extra, please pay it.
We're going to go over all of the benefits and all of the value propositions that the glass brings.
An old argument that I will be putting to rest today is going to be, "Don't get the glass because it's much heavier".
We're going to put that to rest because we're going to weight them, we're going to measure them in grams, and I'm going to prove to you the argument was valid 30 years ago is no longer valid today.
Costa Del Mar started back in 1986, so could they have used heavy glass back then? Probably so, but in 2019, that is not the case.
This is a high index glass and it's very good quality, we're going to weight it right now.
First up on the scale is the 580P. 5 grams, really good.
That is the equivalent of 5 pennies.
Second up, the 580G (glass). Hey, it's only 10 grams.
Look, 5 additional grams, it's not enough to deter me from not getting the glass.
There are several things that they both have in common because it's the 580 technology.
One of them is going to be that they both block out 100% of the harmful HEV Blue Light. The HEV Blue Light is bad because it has been proven to alter circadian rythms, affecting melatonin levels and therefore affecting your sleep.
They are both polarized and they are also obviously blocking 100% of the UV light. They both give you better color contrast and because they block the yellow light at 580 nanometers, it boosts reds, blues, and greens.
The glass is going to have six layers:
1. The C Wall Molecular Bond
2. Glass Layer
3. Encapsulated Mirror
4. Polarized Film
5. Glass Layer
6. and the C Wall Molecular Bond
The Glass in going to have higher optics. There is a way to measure with something called the ABBE value. The ABBE Value in glass the clearest most purest vision that you can get, and the 580G Glass lens can give you that.
So the 580G does have that advantage over the 580P.
Something I do like about both of them is they are both going to have Anti Reflective Treatment on the back side of the lens. You are not going to have the annoying reflection of your own eye in the back of the lens.
We're going to try to get really close here.
I want to show you the difference in the markings.
The 580P has a really well defined 580P laser engraving on the lens.
While the 580G glass has just a 580 laser engraving but it is not as clear and well defined as the 580P.
Something that I discovered today was the difference in vibrancy of the blue mirror. The 580G glass is just WOW, it just so much brighter and bluer.
The 580P blue mirror is just a little less intense and that is a big deal. If I was getting a mirror treatment, I want that 580G vibrancy and brightness that it gives me.
I would like to say something that is really nice on the 580G compared to other brands (like: Maui Jim).
The 580G is actually 20% thinner and 22% lighter in weight than other brands (like Maui Jim).
And here it is, the piece de resistance, if that is even a thing in France.
The 580G lens, the reason why it is worth how much ever it costs extra is: it is impossible to scratch.
You cannot scratch this. This on the hardness scale is glass.
Unless you're going to get a piece of metal or nail and scrape on there of course you'll scratch it that way. But for the most part, it's impossible to scratch.
The 580G is going to be worth it every time, in my opinion.
580P does have a scratch resistant treatment but it is not unscratchable.
One thing that the 580P is superior than the 580G is going to be on impact resistance.
About that impact resistance on though, on the glass, the glass is much higher in impact resistance than people give it credit for .
My clumsy hands have dropped the 580G glass in the past and have not broken them.
Those, my friends, are the differences between 580P and 580G Costa Del Mar lenses.

You did a better job explaining this than Costa did.
Hi Joe, thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate that.
I try to do my best and say as much detail as I possibly can. Let me know how I may continue to help. I hope you have a great day
I second this notion. Thank you for this! Off to get me something from the Untangled Collection...
Thanks for clearing up the weight difference and showing that the glass lens is twice as heavy.
Very impressive & helpful.
I have both the 580g & 580p.
The 580g is noticeably heavier and falls off my face easier.
I do have to say. After a fall of a little over 5ft onto concrete, I did receive scratches on a 580G lens. They are strong but not invincible. Great review!
Mine scratched when they hit concrete too. I bent over and they fell of my face. Probably less than 4 feet. I put croakies on them after that, or they would have many more scratches.
As a lifeguard, I use to spend 9 hours a day wearing my costas. For me, I could feel the difference in weight between the glass and the plastic over that amount of time. For the average person it wouldnt make a difference i dont think... but for somebody who will be wearing the sunglasses essentially all day long I think you would notice a difference. I think it also depends on how they fit your face, and what model of costas.
I wear glasses all day every day, I will never use plastic lens Costas ever lol you crazy. G is the only way to go. If I want plastic lense I'll wear Oakley's, because they're much easier to replace and designed to be replaced regualarly unlike costas.
Thank you from all noobs like me for the comprehensive summary. I am so glad I got 580G glasses for everyday use.
Thank you. Hugely helpful.
I can't wait for mine to arrive! I got the tuna alley 580g! I didn't know that about the non reflective part on the inside! I hate when you see your own eye! I just made the switch from wearing maui jims for the past 4 years! The maui jims were heavy!
Great review.
GREAT Review
Thank you for the video
Have had both , both are great, only thing is if you use them for activities such as shooting outdoors , the glass ones have cracked on me from a casing hitting the lens and the 580 p has taken many of casings over years and hasn’t broken. As well as some fisherman prefer the 580p ever since the accident of the cameraman filming a tournament took a heavy weight to the lens and he had glass shards in his eye. I know they aren’t supposed to be safety glasses but I feel more comfortable for a 580p for those possible accidents you could encounter.
I was worried about shell casings breaking the glass. I think I’ll go with plastic. Thanks for the heads up!
Helli,
Are those Blue-mirror from Costa Del Mar have blue-base layer or brown,
Thanks awsome review
I have busted 6-8 lenses over the years of the G models. That’s the main difference. They are WAY more fragile than you think. I still buy them but know that they are breaking if you drop it or smack it on something unless you get lucky. I just dropped a pair of 580G Brine in ATL in a convention center with thin commercial grade carpet over concrete and smashed the left lens. I have also scratched the G lenses many times. They are not as impervious as one may think but they are pretty decent. That’s what brought me here. I am having to order a new pair while I wait for lens replacement from CDM. I was hunting a review of the Jose Pro and came across your vid. Thanks 🤙🏼
I have Mauis and Costas. Love them both.
Got Rincon 580g blue mirrored today. Has anyone experienced lens flare (bright spots/dots) with them? I have them on both the lenses in 5pm sunlight looking towards but not at the sun. Did I get a bad pair?
Thanks for clearing up the difference between the 2 lenses. That was awesome!! Ive always bought glass Costa's but i really wanted to try a par of 580P but you change my mind. Thanks
I'm glad you can find the information helpful. After you get your next pair, come back and let us know your thoughts. Thank you
I’d like a good breakdown of the different lens colors and their performance
I have 2 blue Costa’s One in glass and the other in plastic.... I did notice one thing when looking through them the plastic is neutral and the glass is high contrast..... also when looking through them at a sheet of white paper they are a completely different colors. The plastic looks blue and the glass has a greenish tint to it. I called Costa and spoke to someone he did not know but he was supposed to get back to me numerous times but of course their crappy customer service never got back to me so I am still looking for an answer
Nice video, and entertaining with the maui jab..👍😁
Hi ! Excellent video, I just subscribe, hey I got a question since I don't like the blue or gray or green reflective, I like the smoke lense and my question is , is the smoke mirror without reflective color still has the 6 layers of protection, even though doesn't have the reflective colors , thanks !
Hi Julio,
Thank you for your question. Yes, the glass Costa lenses have the same protection and the 580P have the same protection, but the number of layers between the 580P and the 580G are different
Great job on differences, as comment earlier that it was better than Costa does is true!
I wear contacts when I wear my sunglasses and I’ve only ever had the plastic ones but now I need to replace the lenses so I’m trying to decide which new lenses I want to order. Are the glass lenses better or worse for people who are wearing contacts? I notice that the cheaper sunglasses start hurting my eyes after awhile. Any info would be great thanks.
But I can't find the 580g in prescription anywhere?
I can't find any 580P lens options on the Costa site for the king tide 8s does it not come with them?
I have some 580g that have scratches...otherwise you gave a really nice explanation
Doesn't the plastic len have oleophobic coatings and few other things compared to the glass?
Great explanation! Thank you! 580G it is!
This was the best review I have seen of Costas. The only other one that comes close is the guy who actually tries to scratch them.
Thank you Galt!! I really appreciate your support. Have a great day!
Definitely get the glass I’ve went through numerous pairs of polymer because they scratch so easily.
Hi Ernest, thank you for suggesting the lens material that has worked the best for you. I hope you have a great Monday and a great rest of the week.
Question! Any chance to get TOTAL weight of the Reefton PRO sunglasses, ones with glass, and ones with plastic. (yes, I know there'll be a 10 gram difference, but I cannot find the weights anywhere.
Great review Max Headroom
Thank you, Patrick!
Que buen video y felicidades estoy a la orden de todos en Miami para salir a pescar en kayak.
Thanks!!!
Great comparison info!!!
@Brian Postal RC - thank you Brian!
You’re welcome. 👍
Great review. I went 580G
honest video tks
So whats the better lense p or g??
I have a $10 pair of polarized glasses, but they help me drive! I looked for different glasses, oakley, smith! I came to the conclusion of a pair of Costa Del Mar Fantail 580G green lens, for $136! I saw that it offers more contrast than I wanted and they are not so dark with the blue lens! I gave this money with pleasure, I'm looking forward to the glasses.
Does the costa ever go on sale
I’d like the glass for more clarity but I’m afraid of it shattering. I’m blind in one eye so I’m trying to be careful!
Can you explain the size as well please
Great informal video
Thank you, Rob!
@@eyewearrepublic9820 just ordered real Costa motu race black glasses Sunday, patiently waiting....
Are costa sunglasses UV 400?
I have on the 580g literally right now. And the right lens is scratched. Or some kinda of blemish that I have not been able to remove
Dang bro you just motivated me to hit the gym again, once corona virus ends, I want those guns
Coronavirus shouldn’t stop you from living your life.
Stop being a pussy and just go workout.
Lol stop checking out men weirdo
What is you're opinion about Serengeti lenses? Compared to Costa or Maui Jim? Greetings from Belgium
I wish they were all polarized
Is it easy to pop the glass lenses in when replacing them? Or should I take them somewhere to get it done? Thanks for the help and info with this video!
What did you end up doing? I need to replace my glass lenses.
@@Otsp922 nothing yet lol
@@carlosfrias2609 did you try taking them to a lens crafters? Or some eye wear store similar ?
There is nothing like buying something frome someone who knows their products well done
You should teach costa how to explain their products 😁😁
Thank you.
Costa has had a brain transplant, therefore they are not the same company from 10 years ago. Beginning in January of 2020, they have completely dropped the ball by eliminating their long term customer service employees and moving their operations under Luxottica's thumb.
The employees don't have a clue about Costa technology and are not even familiar with the styles.
Costa is no longer what people knew them to stand for
I searched for the answer in the comments, but no luck. Which Costa glasses are you modeling in this video?
Looks like the Fantail.
I have glass and plastic in the same 580p different lenses tho , my glass lens has scratches on it I think but my plastic ones are still in pristine condition but clarity both are amazing and I’m trying to decide on a third pair of either plastic or glass
Flip a coin? Just kidding. You will make a great decision, I know it!
Ordered the Jose in 580G blue mirror progressive lens. Terrible inside reflection with the glass lens. Tried it in poly lens and reflection is gone(?) Really wanted the glass lens for scratch protection, but can’t deal with the reflection Im getting while facing the sun. Called Costa and they couldn’t tell me why this was happening with one lens and not the other.
I like that fact that the technology is internal not on the outside like other brands. I came from oakleys to costa. My preference is costa. The glass 👓 mirror technology is awesome they craft there products to the t.
Can you tell me what "style" of Costa have there?
Hi Thomas, It has been a while since I did this video, but I think it's the Costa fantail
Love your explanations!
I always tell people of you want "plastic" get oakley. Theyre mad scientists with their impact resistants lol
I always get 580p but they can scratch. I always keep mine in the case and don’t lay them around and I had enough small scratches on mine have no clue how they got there guess it just happens but you can’t get away from scratches and they are not impossible to scratch
Cool. Still sticking with Wiley X. Protection more important to me.
Hi, thank you for commenting. Wiley X's are great sunglasses
THANK YOU!! I am an avid user of costa and love the 580g lenses but have been shopping around and looking at Maui jim because we were in the mall and the display case was there. This video sealed the deal to just get another pair of Costa glasses. I broke the arm on one side so going with Diego this time after 4 years of wearing reefton
I about bought those! I have a bigger head, so the ferg xl was the deal for me. Ordering another pair with the green mirror/amber lense for sight fishing
I don’t ever see guys with the green mirror lenses. I’m on the fence with green or blue with my next pair. We sail our boat a lot and love the ability to see the sand bars and fish
How would you compare the costa 580g(blue) to the maui jim glass(blue)
I tried the Maui Jim blue lebses, and I didnt like them. The reason is the Blue lens base is brown and that distorts the vision a little. I have never tried the Costa Del Mar Blue, but I have seen the lens base is also blue.
Do you sell the Costa lenses Glass and Poly?
Hi William,
Yes, I sell the glass and poly Costa Sunglasses. Thank you
Eyewear Republic Will be in touch with you, I have tuna alley glasses and want 580G blue to put in them.
I own around 7 pairs of Costas and 3 pairs Maui Jim. The Maui lenses are better than the Costa plastic lenses but I love my blue mirror glass Costas. The other advantages of Costas is the no BS lifetime warranty. Just had a frame break on 2008 blue glass and they are shipping me a brand new pair of permit glass as my pair were discontinued. Compare that to Maui and I paid 50% to replace two pairs of Maui that finish washed of frame.
Oh plenty of us have had plenty of “BS” with Costa warranty claims
Cheers
Maui jim has a much much better warranty… have had both experienced both
I have never paid anything to Maui until warranty service in Canada up to 2019
@@tomdavis3038 update for everyone talking about warranties I just experienced a costa warranty claim… costa Flagler I had no idea when it was purchased it was a gift I said that in the forum I even said it might have been my fault and I would pay for it guess what I got in return… a email saying we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused free prepaid shipping label and a free repair 10/10 costa warranty no questions asked amazing service
Costa warranty is garbage
Hey i bought the costa black fin 580 p is it possible to swap 580p lenses tp glass lenses ? Will the socket that holds the 580 p accept the thickness of the 580g?
Possible, yes because I have done it.
You must know, no one sells the 580G by themselves.
Also, you could break the glass lenses putting them in there.
My Advise To You: buy a new set and forget about combining anything.
Thanks for the reply man awesome im very very pleased with my blackfin 580 p best glasses ever
So mine feel like plastic. But on the lens it only has 580
How does shady ray compare to costa
I agree with others. You do a much better job explaining the differences. Costa should send you a check !!!!
Can you please do a replacing of lenses(glass) on the Jose 01. I shattered my lenses trying to replace them and I'm kinda upset about them not have a video or even instructions to replace them just part numbers and how to fix the frames. Revant did a replacing but they only have polycarbonate lenses not glass so the flex to fit the frame.
Did you ever figure out how to replace the glass lenses?
@@Otsp922 nope customer service told me I was ignorant and that I caused the problem. Turns out there was a defect in the frame and once the original glass lenses came out they were pretty much broke and even poly lenses from fuse won't go in. I'm actively avoiding any Eyewear from costa as they won't replace the frames or lenses even after I paid for new glass lenses. Sorry for the rant but they really urcked me.
The laser etching of "580" on the right lens is not always accurate. I have a pair of Corbina 580 polycarbonates, and the etching reads only "580". The most accurate manner to confirm the lens type is likely the literature inside the case.
Also, a fingernail tap test on the lense should also help to clarify the lens material type.
Does the 580G have the G etched next to 580?
No it just says 580 on the lens. Polycarbonate is etched with 580P on the lens
I feel the weight of the glass over a long day out fishing. besides, it is double in weight according to this.
It’s 10 grams in total though isn’t it!
Did you get bicep implants?
If I accidentally drive over my Costa 580g green mirrors will they warranty them?
Hi, driving over them does not constitute a defect.
Need to replace them!
That’s like asking if you bought a new car and wrecked it leaving the parking lot would they return it.. umm no lol
In the words of the late great Philosopher, Mr Burns..."excellent!"
Excuse Sir where can I buy the lenses without the frame? thank you
Hi, thank you for your question.
Unfortunately, Costa doesn't sell the lenses by themselves.
They want you to pay for the complete package.
@@eyewearrepublic9820 thank you Sir
@@eyewearrepublic9820 yes they do
Doesn't the glass have a lifetime replacement warranty as well?
Can you do a scratch test and shatter test on both?
Great idea! Thank you for your suggestion
I contacted Costa Del Mar in the past about a scratch test and they didn't want to provide the lenses.
Since Costa doesn't sell the lenses by themselves, the economics was more than what I wanted to spend on it.
My friend has the glass lense and we work at a watersports and we use a fourwheeler it was straight up ran over by a fourwheeler as well as a jet ski on a trailer about 1050 pounds and the glass lenses did not scratch or even crack nor did the frame
👍💪
Eyewear Republic I just got the costa baffins which only come in glass and made from recycled fishnet and this is why I love costas not only am I helping the environment but just from feeling these glasses and the durability and quality and the color and optics is just purely amazing
I threw mine in a wood chipper and they just came out clean.
I've had my 580Gs for over 2 years... not a single scratch on them.
So the glass lens only has 580g only has 580 etched in the lens and the 580p has 580p etched in lens?
Correct
Eyewear Republic. Greetings, how can I buy a replacement lens for my Costa glasses in your store???
You can't. I closed the store
On my way getting my 580g
Hi. How is clarity in the 580p vs maui jim poly lenses? In my country i can only get 580p. And do 580p have any distortion?
Costa 580P and Maui Jim Technology are both great. Since they are competitors, their marketing departments will always do anything to get your attention.
Bought a plastic pair and soon as I saw this I canceled and got the glass version.
Great going!
until they accidentally slide off your head and the glass cracks. ask me how I know.
Dropped my 580G’s on concrete one time….shattered. That being said they were the clearest sunglasses I’ve ever had.
I’ve literally heard Glass lens do still scratch….maybe someone can clear this up.
people, the 580G are awesome! but I will let you all know that I bought 2 pairs of costa rincons on Amazon black Friday.
well the ones with the 580G are heavier and it is Fing annoying felling the them slip down your nose.
I think those 10 additional grams plus the weight of the frames is my problem
so my suggestion is buy the glass lens but consider which frames you buy also.
Thank you for your comment.
@@eyewearrepublic9820 thanks for your content bud!
i’ve got the glass half moons and they stay on my face pretty good
My biggest issue with mine 580p is they scratch the reflective screen off very easily
I'm on my third pair of 580G lenses on Corbinas. These things crack very very easily. These sunglasses have cost me 500 bucks +
Found the glass $70 less than the poly on amz. Both sold by Amz. Hopefully not counterfeit like my last knife I got on AMZ.
580 glass. Noticable difference when fishing.. And the glass lenses have a slight difference looking into water to say I.D. your catch before it breaks the surface. My preferred are Hammerhead 580 . Inshore too. Also, I've had the green lenses and they aren't better inshore as Costa claims them to be. Placed in a fishing tournament and won a pair of Costa Reefton I think they were with green lenses. My nephew really liked his new Green lense Costa's for one of his birthday gifts lol...
❤️👍👍👍
Saved up my money for 6 months to get a pair of man-o-war 580g loved them until someone stole them from my boat while weighing in fish at a tournament. Ughhh gonna be awhile till I can get another pair
My glass shattered.
They are a little darker tint than the plastic
Once you go glass you don’t go back!!
I agree! I have Maui Jim Neutral gray glass, and another Transition lenses latest generation 8 plastic, and there is a difference
I’m curious as to whether the opticians opinion is still the same now that costa is, unfortunately, now a Luxotica brand. I know fisherman in the southeast US, especially Florida, are switching to other brands in droves. One of the first things Lux did after buying the brand is essentially close Florida operations except for a skeleton staff. Maui Jim and Smith have been the biggest beneficiaries. I sold all my Costas and went with Vuarnet and Serengeti.
Cheers
Luxottica should all be made in italy so you get the finest quality you can get
Glass is virtually light as a feather!
Am I able to replace my plastic costa lenses for glass? Is this something any ophthalmologist office can do?
No, Costa set it up where you have to buy new sunglasses
Through the costa parts portal, you can now buy both glass and polycarbonate lenses separately as well as the nose pads. For the glass lenses with the blue mirror they run a little over $100 and the nose pads are less than $5
I just cracked a lense, dropping it less than a foot onto my counter
Dude has GUNZ...
This is unscrachable...unless you scratch it 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Glass cracks easy and not worth the money. The warranty is horrible these days since they changed the process 2 years ago.
daym bruh, please put them guns away on your next videos cuz they distracted me lol
Gracias amigos
I couldn't focus on the explanation.. the guns on display were too distracting
