Lyrics
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Loud the wind howls
Loud the waves roar
Thunderclaps rend the air
Baffled our foes
Stand by the shore
Follow they will not dare
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Many's the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore did wield
When the night came
Silently lain
Dead on Culloden field
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Though the waves heave
Soft will ye sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep
Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
I'm not Scottish but this song touches me to my soul. Like a remembrance of another time another life.
That's how it gets to me!
For me too
Yes me too I was Irish my few times my past life
me too.it's just a special feeling,isnat?
Outlanders Theme Song, does touch one’s soul.
I just played this song to my 102 year old English mum as she is passing over. I am in NSW Austrlia now & she is in Ontario Canada but came over from England at the age of 18 on the first battle ship loaded up with WAR BRIDES in January of WW2. This song was written about her ancestor on her maternal side Osborne...bonnie prince Charlie I believe it was. Strangely enough in L.A. of all places in the 80's I met twin Scottish brothers who were musicians & knew this song when I asked them. As it turns out they are the decendents of those who ferried this anscestor of mine away from being beheaded by the British to the safety of the Isle of Skye. This life is strange. isn't it?
adendum....In KIngston Ontario when I was a child I dragged an MP Flora MacDonald up to our3rd floor attic of the 1800's house my mother is passing in now....to see a very large old old charcoal portrait of a young man hiding out in a tree stump holding a woman in a long period dress with bonnet on's hand in gratitude for the bread she held in her apron & was offering the young man while she looked
over her shoulder. Not sure how my family happened to have this amazing historical piece of art but when Flora MacDonald the MP saw this she said...OMG the woman who is feeding Bonnie Prince Charlie our ancestor was a MacDonald one of hers. So I met 2 familes that knew our family back in that day. Perhaps we DO travel in soul groups until the end of each epoch of time which we are conculding another as we speak. God bless us all. Just a story I thought was of interest.
Claro que es de interés, gracias
Thank you. A beautiful share. My family...Orkney. Escaped the battle of Culloden. Took the name Johnstone to hide...so I do not know my true clan.
❤❤❤
There's just something so magical about Scotland!
No nation I would rather belong to🏴
Since my ancestors came from there, I have to agree!
Our music is mostly sad, about all that has been lost.
The North Atlantic have a habit of making special kinds of People.
It is a mystical place in OUR AUSTRALIAN DREAMTIME
"The Skye Boat Song" is a traditional Scottish folk song that tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape from Scotland to the Isle of Skye after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The song is believed to have been written in the early 19th century by Sir Harold Boulton, with lyrics that were set to a traditional melody.
Verse 1:
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
The first verse sets the scene for the rest of the song. The "bonnie boat" is urged to sail quickly, with the sailors calling out to move forward. The reference to the "lad that's born to be King" refers to Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland and had been defeated in battle. The destination is the Isle of Skye, which is where he sought refuge after the battle.
Verse 2:
Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
The second verse describes the difficult conditions that the boat and its passengers must face. The winds and waves are fierce, and thunder echoes through the air. Despite this, the "foes" who seek to capture Bonnie Prince Charlie remain on the shore, afraid to follow the boat into the rough waters.
Chorus:
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
The chorus repeats the opening verse, with the sailors once again urging the boat to move forward and take the prince to safety on the Isle of Skye.
Verse 3:
Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
The third verse offers a bit of comfort to the prince, who is described as being able to sleep peacefully despite the tumultuous conditions. The ocean is compared to a "royal bed" that rocks the prince to sleep, and Flora, a character who is believed to have helped him escape, is described as watching over him as he rests.
Verse 4:
Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the Claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden field.
The fourth verse reflects on the tragedy of the Battle of Culloden, in which many men fought and died for their cause. The Claymore, a type of sword used by Scottish warriors, is mentioned as a symbol of their bravery and skill. The final line refers to the aftermath of the battle, with many of the soldiers who fought and lost their lives lying silently on the field.
Verse 5:
Burned are our homes, exile and death,
Scattered the loyal men;
Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.
The final verse speaks of the devastation that was wrought upon Scotland after the battle. Homes were burned, and loyal men were scattered or killed. However, the verse ends on a hopeful note, with the belief that Bonnie Prince Charlie will return and reclaim his throne. This line reflects the enduring hope and loyalty that many Scots felt towards their rightful ruler, even in the face of defeat and hardship.
Verse:
Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
Merry of soul she sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.
This verse serves as a sort of introduction to the story that the song tells. It speaks of a "lass" who has left and sailed over the sea to Skye, and asks if she could be the one the song is about. The reference to the "lass" is believed to be a metaphor for Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was often referred to as "The Young Pretender" and who disguised himself as a woman to escape after the Battle of Culloden. The verse sets up the story of the prince's escape and sets the tone for the rest of the song.
Wow! Thank you. Wish the creator would pin this at the top! ❤️💜💚
❤
THANKYou
I appreciate it a lot. I can understand more of the meaning of this song. I hadn’t known any of Scottish Background before. But when I started to watch the Outlander on Netflix. My heart was broken when I knew about story of the battle of Culloden. I do still feel sorry fot them until now.
Thank you so much

Thankyou for posting the Lyrics !!!
Thank you
My father is a Scottish Native, came to Australia at 17, hailing from Perthshire. Thank you Ella for the lovely music ❤️
well i'm a true scots through and through and i love that song
My spirit and my heart belong to Scotland, beautiful song!
I'm not Scottish but this song brings tears to my eyes. The history behind it is incredible and you sing it so well!
Dunvegan!!!! I'm proud of my auld and true Scots heritage. There's Irish and Italian in there too but I was born and bred in my bonny home🏴🏴🏴🏴I couldn't love it more 💙💙💙💙
Half of my DNA 🧬 is Scots. You can feel this song all the way through your heart and soul. It brings tears 😢 and strong feelings of pride because the Scots are a strong people who’ve been pushed down so many times over the centuries yet, you can never take the pride and fight out of them. It doesn’t matter whether they live in that beautiful country, or their ancestors did. Whether it’s Celtic or not, I don’t know 🤷🏼♀️ But, I know you can feel it deep inside. 🏴❤️
Yes,, and those feelings will not be denied.
I have no English blood in me, 10 years ago UK moved us across the border from Northumbria to Scotland, my father was an English Jacobite, my mother an Irish Jacobite . My 3 children are raised as Jacobites as their children will be. You can kill the body but never the spirit. The King across the sea will return. Deus Volt es!
My great, great grandfather was a Irish Jacobite who fought for the Bonnie Prince over the water.
Michael Hanlon the irish had a huge involvement in that rising its not nearly recognised enough
How OLD are you???
Willow Broaddus Ha ha... right!?! Nice catch ☺️
My great great (many greats) grandfather came over a little before the revolution.
My great-great grandfather fought for Canada in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment during WW1. Not sure how old you are if your great-great grandfather lived 200 years earlier.
I'm Puerto Rican with Scottish ancestry which is real apparent when one sees my mom's blue eyes and red hair. I loved connecting to this part of me in this song. Beautiful song.
Such a beautiful soft voice yet hits with the pride of the highlands. I love the songs of my people. Thank you Ella Roberts for bringing a sensational take on this historic melody
Ella is beautiful.
Ella Roberts has such a pretty voice. Every time I hear her sing it makes my day better
Walking long distance in Belgium, many years ago, I passed two men in kilts, walking with silent bagpipes, and asked, during the passing, if they wouldn't play "The Skye Boat Song"? I couldn't imagine that with those, they didn't know this tune!
It took a little time walking on, before I heard the bags being blown to function, and then the start of this immortal and beautiful song! Finn. Denmark
I'm 31 weeks pregnant and my baby moves and kicks like crazy when I play this song! He is part Scottish! .. hehe
Now my baby boy is 4 months old and he's in my arms falling asleep... Love my life.
@@nikalik beautiful.
@@atorian8850 thanks!
Happy for you listen try visiting a forest when you kid is born . When my grandfather was alive forest for me where the best. Maybe he or she might like the outdoors do You like the idea
I always love the wind in the trees its just like music
I’m a Scottish Wallace, and this song means the world to me for so many reasons
I wish I could go to Scotland and never leave. My family is from isle of skye, and Aberdeenshire. I'm in America now. They came hére in the 1600s. I feel á deep connection to Scotland and Norway and Iceland. All places my family is from.
I live in California. I loved the Isle of Skye when I visited many years ago. You are blessed and I can relate to your wish to return.
@@M209T Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. My dream is to return and never leave again.
Is it possible to be homesick for a home you've only seen in photographs? My family is from Ayre, but I feel the call of home every time I hear the pipes.
FROM AYR ,,,,,
Ella Roberts is gorgeous and she is more talented than everyone in hollywood producing music at the moment. Nothing but raw beautiful talent. I appreciate her! Good for you Ella!
She is beautiful and entirely suits the part of Flora Macdonald. No man can avoid being entranced by her.
My beloved Grandmother used to sing this song to me when I was little
Miss her so much i love you so much grandma you were like a mother to me the tears flow like a river thinking about you
This song contains the power that can make you wish to spend the rest of your life in Scotland. And that's my family's wish.
My kith and kin fell at Culloden. My ancestors fought at the battle of Preston. Captured and put on trial, acquitted for lack of evidence, (no one would testify against them, so honourable were they) my family fled to the Royal court of good King James. One of our family became tutor to Bonnie Prince Charlie and one of the wives became lady in waiting to Queen Mary of Modena. This song is an agony and a joy to all of my blood. What could have been. so near and yet so far. Thank you Ella - you call to all of us. Rev Dev xxx
Although my ancestry is mostly German, I'm sure there must be a Scotsman in the mix somewhere. The stories and the music touch my soul. I first heard this song on Outlander and had to learn more about it. This beautiful version, and the story behind the song, have hit me in the feels.
i just came across this videos her voice the landscape everything is simply breath taking
im a scottish highlander scottish parents i sang this song since childhood and i love this song
Hello Sharon, how are you doing today.
This music makes me so proud of my ancestors what they sacrificed for me, the isles of the sea that they called home, the Lord looked upon it and declared that it was good.
This song touches my heart although I`m not Scottish but German, it lets me feel our blood relationship...
Some singers we listen to with our ears and rare those we listen to with our hearts, one of them is Ella Roberts. This song is a masterpiece
This song touches the soul of all Catholics who long for the reunion of Altar and Throne, not just of Bonnie Prince Charlie but all those venerable monarchs who built Europe.
She is beautiful and has a beautiful voice I was raised in Scotland and know the historical truth and this song means so much to grafiares bobby love all the fans xx
Well I am Fiona Mckinnon my father was Angus Mckinnon we hale from New Zealand and I’m part Maori and Scottish my dad was so proud of his Scottish heritage as am I . I’ve yet to get to Scotland xx
My mother used to sing and hum this as a lullaby for my brothers and I. I loved this song before I even knew what it was called. I only found out when I had my own children years later, what it was called! I used to sing it to my children and my father would quip, Oh god off to bloody Skye AGAIN!
Listen to Cor Chuil Aodha singing Gile mear it's about Bonnie Prince Charlie in Gaelic it'll knock your socks off
By heritage I'm an Irishman. This kind of music quiets the turbulent ocean of my soul and makes the sun even more brighter.
Omg I remember singing this during music classes at primary school -that was 55yrs ago .. since then I have loved it 💕
Same; my school choir sang it at parents' night when I was in fourth grade 20 years ago, with the chorus sung by the whole choir and the verses were solos.
6 million reduced to 2 million. Now over 45 million abroad. how many kings and Queens over looked. more than you realized.
The moment when you notice, the cinematographer and producer is named Benjamin Fraser McKenzie...
I did remember of Outlander rsrsrs James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser
The moment you realise that Ella Roberts is Australian and not Scottish.
Oh my god really?
-KRISTINE JOY CAVATAN FROM SAUDI ARABIA
Is my brother.....
Brilliant cinematography. Benjamin Fraser McKenzie? Wasn't he turning into a tree or a flower in some of his videos a couple years past? And now he's turned into an extraordinarily gifted cinematographer/choreographer? I must say, I prefer his latest metamorphosis. A talent like his would be a waste turned into forest foliage. (LOL)
OMG, all her videos remind me of my favourite Scottish historical romance novels.
The history behind this song is so amazing this is the song of Flora MacDonald who risked everything after the battle of Culloden to help bonnie prince Charlie escape to Skye. If this is the first you have heard of here I highly recommend looking her up she is not only a hero for Scotland but for all women around the world.
thanks i will
I have a Flora McDonald in my family tree. I think it might be her.
I went to her grave on the Isle of Skye and paid my respects
Paterson castle
Thanks for this! I'm teaching this song to a young voice student of mine, and was wondering who Flora is. :)
Does this girl have a album or just a single? She should go on The Voice!
I’m not Scottish but sang that song in school a long long time ago at the British Boy’s School in Alexandria Egypt. Very Nice.
Yesterday I was searching for something entirely different and discovered Ella's music. Her singing this song and the video are so beautiful, I've had this on loop and subscribed. Looking forward to her other videos!
She looks like an angel, she sings like an angel.
She is what you dream of
I’m half Scottish. I hope to one day visit. Beautiful music.
I'm mostly Irish and Scottish and I just have such a longing for my ancestors homeland. I don't know what it is but I just want to return somewhere I haven't been so bad.
It’s awesome when you do
All true hearts return home to the land (if you are SCOTS) by the low road. SAOR ALBA GU BRATH
She has such a beautiful soothing voice this song is absolutely beautiful
Wonderful Vocals and Music. Ordered the CD Single. Hope for an Album. Regards from Germany
My daughter and I visited Inverness in Dec 2016....We love Scotland and it's folk!
My daughter is 8 months old and this song sung by you is the only thing that gets her to go to sleep! Beautiful song and beautiful voice! I can’t thank you enough, I’ve just brought it on iTunes so I have it all the time xx
I was born in Scotland (Dumfries), but came here to Australia at the age of 4. And here I am now, still in Australia, aged 58, listening to this beautiful music from my homeland, and yes, I admit it, experiencing some very strong emotions. I guess we never let go of our heritage.
JD
I am here in Ireland listening to this. Absolutely stunningly beautiful. ❤️
there is a draw to Scotland, a place with so much fierce pride and love of country. I think most of us, even those who are not Scottish think it should have been left alone to its own rule. This song makes me cry. I might just have a bit of Scott in me, my hair was Auburn and my son has auburn hair also and his beard is red. :)
I am from méxico and i watched outlander!!
And i fall in love! I love scotland! What a místical land.
And i hate england! Jajajaj
Sorry for My english!
Heritage is in the blood, I feel the Celtic so strong, stronger than the half Anglo-Saxon. It can be healed and purified, ask if you want to know more :) I live in England, have always felt Scots/Welsh.
Bless you so far away but you can connect with the land deep inside.
My daughter is in Melbourne, pregnant for 1st time, in these terrible fascist lockdown times in Victoria. Bless us all, the Light has won :0 x
Hi from Dumfries
What a beautiful voice!!!💖💖💖
a voice of an angel in it's most purist form
This was one of my father's favorite songs. This video makes me think of him, and of the hours we spent sharing our love for books, intellectual conversation, simple pleasures and Celtic music. Thank you for making this.
My mother used to sing this to me on the way up to my grandparents house, this is why I love this song.
This tune is historic. I love the two melodies in single voices.
hauntingly beautiful - and the songs very good too
Her voice is enchanting ❤️
Ella has a beautiful voice and the video is beautiful too 👩🏻🏫👵🏻🇺🇸👏🏻🥰🏴‼️
My heritage my dad spoke Gaelic . My daughter watched Outlander and would learn Gaelic shes an historian and would teach me our language my dad would be so proud. Passed in 1990 our last name Bruce. I cant hear this without singing it thankyou 👍💖

Hauntingly beautiful voice. Most beautiful rendition I've heard
She is a beautiful young woman. Form here in Australia.
Woooooooow!!!! you made me goosebumps!! one of the most beautiful voices that i've heard
The way you have sung this makes me think of the beautiful, golden friendships I have that have lasted more than 40 years through time and distance. We are come close to our golden years and walking in those fields of gold.
Nos cœurs sont mis à rude épreuve en écoutant cette voix, cette chanson, cette musique… Émotion pure…
My body belongs to America, but my heart and soul belongs to Scotland. I’m so proud of my heritage 🏴
Does this song have a history? I mean, is it a folk song, where it was sang among family generation? Bacause it feels like it, it makes me shiver and wanna cry...
I first heard it on Outlander and I had to find it and it history, because it has to have one.
You see, I love hear anything that is from a long time ago, that has a history to it.
My favorites are from the people that has passed and lived in Great Britain, Europe, Middle East... the tribes, Huns, Vandals, Romans, Vikings, Barbarians, Germany, Dutchs (I know some of those are actually from the same people, but you know what I mean).
One of my dreams to achieve is to walk on these lands, the Castles, the Hills, the Villages, the Ruins... Touch those walls, step on those rocks, lay on those grasses... if I close my eyes I can almost feel the wisperings... the horse gallopes... The taverns conversations... the folklore told to children... the sword battles... the laughts and the pains... this last one makes me hurt and suffer, but _feel_ nonetheless...
Thats why I watch these kind of movies and shows ( Xena, Hercules, Vikings, 300 Spartacus, Reign, Outlander and so much more...) to try and fullfill this longing...
You may say that I have a romantic view of the past, well sure thing I have, I know most things portrayed on screen are not how or what really happenned, but most of them are also pretty close of things I have mentioned, the simple things, such as _beying_ .
I'm sorry for the long text, I just had to express myself and let out the amount of emotion the song made me feel.
I'm brazilian, born and raised, and this country has my heart in a way I couldn't explain. But so do the mentioned lands, because of all the facts I have just shared with you.
Someday I will achieve it, and I'm looking forward on how this advencture is going to affect these feelings.
Until then, I got to read, listen and watch them from afar.
Much love,
-An outlander in my own time.
p.s. great voice.
To answer your question on the song's history, it is actually know by another name: Bonnie Prince Charlie. He's "the lad born to be king'' spoken of in the song. The Skye in the song is the Isle of Skye, and island north west of Scotland. I'm not fully versed in his history, but the gist is that he wasn't actually fully Scottish, but he DID have claim to the British throne (being the grandson of the last Catholic King, James VII) and since the Scots didn't care for the Protestant rulers England currently had, they formed an alliance: The Jacobite Cause (named for his grandfather).
Thank you for sharing,
It sounds like you’ve definitely been alive in these historical times, I believe in past lives and know I’ve had lifetimes in those eras aswell,
Ive had memories of being alive in those days, and I’m fascinated by the rich history and liveliness of the land,
Hoping to return and experience it again.
:)
I'll have to confess I have the same mentality as yours, e que também sou BR
I'm also Brazilian and I happen to live here in this beautiful country that is Scotland!
James Caudill Scotland or Brazil?

My Ulster-Scots Grandmother used to sing this to me, brings back memories.
Where are you from? Jus wondering...
Mine also. Grew up with this song.
I might be being deeply stupid, but isn’t Ulster in Ireland?
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
[Chorus]
Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the claymore did wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden field.
[Chorus]
Though the waves heave, soft will he sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rock'd in the deep Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
[Chorus]

People of Scotland this is your culture and your heritage. Protect and preserve it. It won't exist for long if you don't fight for it.
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard lately ❤️ The video and vocal artist are equally beautiful as well!
I didn't realize it until this year but this video was released on the same date that I was admitted to give birth to my daughter, who we named Skye 😍 this is by far my favorite recording!
Another one of my favorite songs sung by Ella. Beautiful song/Beautiful Voice/Beautiful Lady!
I love Scottish music, the landscape, the sea and Islands.
Home for me..........ahhh......beauty,freedom and the breathe if life.
I forget that this song is about death and battle and failure actually. I feel my ancestors were amongst them, in my bones, what a powerful pull this small nation has . . . . Time to transform all pain into Love and forgiveness
To be taken into an other world please play this song on a real Audio System with a great DAC Digital Audio Converter attached to your computer and some good speakers to go with it.

thank you for posting the lyrics. Beautifully sung, beautifully filmed.
I love this song and Ella Nails it exactly beautifully the best yet. Thanks Ella.
The Scottish blood runs with fire in my veins every time I hear this beautiful song. Slange var to the Bonnie prince over the water
Everyone thinks of this song from outlander and I do agree it’s an amazing show but the song has an amazing historical meaning
The song version on Outlander actually disgusts me to the point I fast forward the titles. Why they couldn't have just played a version of the original Skye Boat Song I don't know.
@@froggy8030 same i hate how they changed it
froggy8030 they actually used a poem based on this song. The poem is from the 1800’s except it uses male pronouns.
Van Morrison's song, Into The Mystic, used some reference that this song has. Bonnie boat, hear the sailors cry, and Skye. Nice song. I don't know if he's Scottish or not. I just looked up what a Bonnie boat might be.
A haunting that draws my heart...
This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever
Beautiful
