Wedding Cake's BIGGEST DAY

- Autumn surf just keeps giving and this time its at home in Sydney. I just arrived back to Sydney from Tahiti the swell forecast was telling us that the ocean is going to erupt with some huge waves all focused directly into the Sydney City coastline (from Wollongong to Newcastle). What I did not expect is the surf to be as big as it got. Locals informed me that this swell is the biggest in decades. One Coogee local told me that their hasn't been a swell bigger since the one way back in 1974. So it was for sure an historic day to say the least and here is the evidence.

"What are you going to take out?"
"The 11ft gun. Try get in early. What are you going to take out?"
"The 1ft hand plane."
Hug respect to Kalani the body surfer. INSANE
Where was that?
Check this guy body surfing in the NAZARE area.
@@waynegolding891 I bought the Apple TV video it’s really short he doesn’t actually speak but his actions speak for him he is body surfing waves double the height of the wedding cake island on this day
Does he even get a wave? Doesnt look doable.
He gets barrelled at 6:32
That body surfer is a psychopath 😲
Maybe the best Aussie big wave footage ever!?! Just needed Midnight Oils Wedding Cake Island song at some point. Congrats to all!
Yeah the tunes are pretty ordinary 😂
Never seen body surfing like that. Amazing!
I've been watching your stuff for over 20 years Tim, that was friggin amazing. best footage ever.
some of the best edits I have seen in a while. Music, ambient light, drone work just amazing. Body surfing in those waves is totally off the hook. Thanks for sharing !
Unbelievable. Great edit. Music so fitting. Such courage. Hats off to all.
So sorry. I found the music super distracting.
Tim you missed it mate down the coast was 12-20ft windy but epic barrels, me and the boys warmed up with a few CC’s (coffees and cones, Nescafé blend 43 if you were wondering)we were also on the piss leading up to that swell, What brothel would you recommend in the Sutherland area I need to come up and pick up some new Dylan longbottom sleds and thought it would be nice to loosen up a bit after that last swell. Keep shaggin bonightmare
Soooo cool dude , GNARLY
First of all, kudos to all that went out. It seems when you watch it , that unless you keep up in the pocket and keep the speed up, instead of just running with it, then you seem to slow down and get mowed over.
The whole thing AWESOME. THANKS GUYS. RESPECT.
Very photogenic. Beautiful. Cool sounds. Genius
dude bodysurfing that big wave, what the hell man. awesome
Was hoping you’d be back from T’po to film this swell. Didn’t see any Av footage.. - what I loved so much was that long shot of the boiling, frothing horizon with chunderous sets in the foreground. Reckon that’s the best capture of actual size and volume on tape for me. Yeah those boog and body surfers are nuts🎉 not too many taking deep ones can’t blame em. Legendary vid. Thanks so much. 🎉
I went out for a jog that day and saw all this going down. I had the same thought: this is the biggest swell I've seen for as long as I've been in Coogee. Man, it was glorious.
I lived in South Coogee in the 80s. The biggest I saw was the cyclone swelI just after Xmas in '88 when it was breaking in a line from South Coogee to North Bondi - no-one out - it was too big.
I remember that swell. Never seen anything like it.
Cool seeing all those big pintails as well as foil board
Looks like the foils, body bashers and tow inns had the best of it. The paddlers looked like they were not having much of a win. The footage of it breaking out the back and the guy with the red board doing the dive under the foam......I was actually holding my breath for him. great stuff.
I don't know. those foils were so far on the shoulder I'd hardly call that a ride😂
@@Nobodyimportant696 yeh i think they could have got closer to the break, but i guess good photo opportunity
Imagine Mark Richards carving that up, that red gun reminded me of the great man
Outstanding work, this brought back memories from the early 70's (Im 72)when we tried to ride these monsters. This was bigger for sure but no Jet skies and we paddled out from Coogee and back. Back then, yes not as big for sure but you could bet the Coogee SLSA surf boat crew would CRACK A WAVE.
Unbelievable. Super impressed well done Wayno and Howie. Respect. Take care. Very good footage thanks
Haven't even watched this yet, but I was so hoping that you would film this! Can't wait.
The worlds best shoulder charge..
Great footage Tim. Bloody envious of you southerners... big and uncrowded. Cheers.
How good Is Sydney! Except for Traffic Jams. Good effort guys.
That is a great break. Looks lovely. Tahiti was ripping this year too. Maui last year was just insane. Some good waves to be found these days
Excellent footage as always TB
awesome edit, thanks for you time Tim.
So epic! Got to watch from the headland too
I grew up with a view of the Bombie off Gordans bay from about 1980-88. I dont remember seeing it this big out there. Great memories!
Kalani is a crazy dude :)
I lived in Bondi area for years and never knew about this spot. But having seen it I am pretty sure I wouldn't have paddled out. But, having friends with jetskis spotting me might have persuaded me to go out. Great video. Thank you friends.
Terrific stuff. We dont often think of Sydney as a big wave location but that sure qualifies....who woulda thought! Extremely good surf film, brilliantly put together to be fun, amazing, compelling and beautiful!
Brings back memories, have ridden there a few times back in the 70s , pig of a wave to take off on especially on a kneeboard but a great ride . The wave is crazy full and unless you are in the right spot no chance . Biggest i have seen it there was may 1974 hell even Sydney harbour was closing out . Cheers for the great footage
Nice work and great to meet you!
Great footage huge waves. Still, the rides that really count are the guys that paddle in themselves, and the body surfer. Tow-in's don't cut it by comparison
Very cool, amazing footage and these guys are fearless 👍
You know it's big when no one looks like they're in a hurry to get out there...
Great film! 👍
Excellent footage well shot music brillant and those waves WOW - I once went out at Bower on a 12 footers that was scray but this is twice as big
This is wondeful footage and the surfers are so courageous. They can be commended for their fabulous body surfing ( despite the possibility of sharks being nearby. I pray these body surfers remain safe, always.)
Beautiful footage. Sooo jealous.
Body surfing love it
Finally some epic footage of the swell! Bondi was awesome, but nothing on that.
Started watching this on my phone but didn’t do it justice, put it on the telly and was so good to watch! The waves were so full, shit ton of water!
Awesome footage ,Respect to those surfers specially Howie
Oh WOW! What a day. 😲
'The Emerald City' of Sydney shines so brightly! 💎🤗
Superb images. 😍 A pity you couldn't play a MIDNIGHT OIL track to accompany... 🤣
M 🦘🏏😎
WoW! 🌊💖
Great photography. Thought that guy on the red rhino chaser at the start, thought he was gone at the end of the ride! Next shot the rocks. 😯
Awesome stuff !
I remember a swell in 78-79 (?) on the back of a low travelling cyclone (Hal?). It looked like Nazaré just standing on the Coogee promenade. The few dudes that were out there looked like they were paddling up the sides of 10 storey buildings. The waves were crashing into the wall at the northern end of the beach. Could feel it from my Grandmothers house in Hill street.
All of Sydney's brain surgeons turned up to surf this morning
Nicely shot Tim
There isnt much footage out there like this. Far out mate. That was wild.
That was epic !! I wonder how the ultimate waterman Kai Lenny would have gone on his foil in those huge waves ??
A great filmmaker who hasn't lost their touch.
Such good camera work.
Great vid.
Pretty cool for the east coast.
@7:52 damn, I know how that feels (when it's like 5ft). I don't recall ever seeing footage of a surfer in AU stand up on their board to get a bit further under the wall of water that was coming for them. Truly epic day. If I wasn't stuck in Canberra, and back in the gong, I would have been down the beach watching it all day.
Thanks for documenting and sharing a full length vid! (your insta has been my best friend these past couple of days). Cheers!
some big waves in the gong but not many rideable spots bellza bombie virgins was pumping
@@micktaylorwolfcreekmechanical hell yeah. that's exactly where I would have gone. ;) Hope you got to witness mother nature in all her glory!?
@@joelallen819 spent near all day watching the surf up and down the coast from shellharbour to stanwell was great to watch the power of nature just wish i was still fit enough to surf it the biggest swell ive seen in years
@@micktaylorwolfcreekmechanical I already have a keyboard drying off from laughing laughing last night, so had keep my beer in my mouth... 'wish I was still fit enough to surf'. I get that.
Great you got to spend the day watching the surf. Like my jealousy metre is at 0. so glad you got to witness and appreciate it.
Howie said it was big, but he has ridden heaps bigger at Stonewalls
"One of the best Autumn's"
"Swell after Swell after Swell"
C'mon bro
I'm in retirement 😔
I was hoping you were down south
I was there! Thanks for the upload :)
Way out the back near chronulla about four footy feilds out from the right breakwall I got a massive left handed all the way in on a thin small board and it was a Monster. Brang me all the way back in.
Kinda breaks like big Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz eh?
I have Watched this place break a few times on huge swells and it’s always looked like it still needed to be 4-5ft bigger and it would be good , this swell it looked like it had that extra 4-5ft
Insano ❤
I was annoyed to have missed that morning as I was in Canberra.
It would have been great for photography.
Incrível
Geez that’s hard goin’
Oh damn nice! I appreciate the jetliner audio mixed into the edit. Professional quality as usual, sir!
wow that's big....surely we got better tow in guys than that, the body basher got the best waves.
There's another spot, about 45 mins south. Right hander, Walk or boat in only.
... fkn hectic " .. great edit gang , well done " .. thanks 🙏
Top flick
guy in the middle at 3:10... Paddle paddle paddle!
@6:15 oh no bro 😮
Insane.
Just here for the music
Awesome. Great work.
The biggest balls in Sydney right there! Another amazing video BUT more footage in real-time and less slow-mo please.
06:17 OMG
how much did you get for selling that wave to the news? i reckon it'd be a good hourly rate
Great footage! Why doesn't he credit the surfers it would be nice to know who is getting these massive waves!
That’s what’s called ‘surfviving’
11:24 headache for days after that
Im a giraffe 🦒
I guess the locals you spoke to weren't around just over a year ago when it was bigger
was it bigger ? what's the story here
Yeah, this one was officially (as in, on the swell forecast & reporting platforms) 17ft, which yes, is still huge & spectacular to watch, and that's just the average wave height so of course some sets will be bigger than 17ft.. but 2nd April 2022 was officially at 22ft, which means many of the sets were even bigger than that. In the 2023 swell event, the waves washed up onto the road at the north end of bondi beach (where I live), but the 2022 swell washed all the way across the other side of the road & up onto the war memorial, also that swell did a lot of physical damage at every single beach between Bondi & Coogee (Coogee is where Wedding Cake Island is), including uplifted concrete slabs, bent hand railings, demolished brick walls & sandstone walls & wooden elevated walking paths, downed fences,.. it was honestly so insane, this swell was mesmerising, but that one was absolutely polarising to watch!! This swell there were only a couple of rogue sets that looked about the same size as many of last year's ones. And actually, I think it was about a month before that 25ft-er, we had another big swell that was rated at a similar size to this one., which I was shooting at the island for. 🙌🏼🤙🏼
"Modern day savages"😁
😱😱😱
What's the song 5 and a half minutes in?
lived at coogee in the 70's
famous for the smallest waves in Sydney
Now she got the biggest ! FFS !
Yep me 2, it was a different Coogee then
@@davebirss2131 rent was cheap, you could buy a fried fish lunch, and then go to Coogee Bay Hotel for Cold Chisel concert.
Ok, just tell me to STFU 🤣😂
Is that dude bodysurfing at 06:30?
14:22
Yeah but what about the right? Too raucous I'd imagine. Coming in at Coogee beach must have 10 to 12 foot itself. Nice to see Tim is working hard as usual.
Rights onto the edge of wedding cake. Smashed into those rocks wouldn’t be fun
That bodysurfer gave it everything. Awesome footage. Please less slow motion as takes away what they're going through Avagud1
Synga storm of May 1974 , white water between Sydney Heads
where abouts in Sydney?
Best vision of the day by far!
