Today we're looking at how my old music production laptop had a very untimely death (just what we needed before NAMM) - how we got through, even producing music on the most basic machine before getting hold of the new machine that we talk about in today's video. How powerful a machine do we actually need?

Great video, congrats on the new tool!
Just went through something very similar with my i7-7820hk/GTX-1070 Asus ROG 752: GPU just died on me.
Almost got this very model, but instead went with an Acer Helios 300. With an i7-9750 (all six cores SUSTAIN 4.1 GHz under load!) and a GTX-1660, combined with the 144hz screen (with great color accuracy), it's the snappiest machine I've ever used by a surprising margin. I'm honestly still floored by it every day!

Thanks this was perfect. I've been learning reaper on a very old 32bit asus with 2Gig of ram. Ripping all the bloat out of win 10 to get more umph has been a fun game.

Very good info and addressed some of my questions regarding the number of cores and ram. Is it safe to say that a laptop can adequately suffice for a home studio instead of the old tower desktop version? To me it's always been about heat dissipation but it seems laptops are doing a better job of this as of late. Would love to know your thoughts. I'm currently building a studio and have an MSI 16gig ram and the same 6 core I7 cpu as you. Thx!

Hey Adam, a strange question. I'm currently in process of upgrading my main tech with having a new laptop specifically for music production, as I need to work on huge projects with orchestral parts and rock parts. However I got the option of having it without an OS installed, as I'd like to do it myself. I do prefer win 7 all the way even though its not supported anymore, but in my work I'm using a business laptop running win 10 Pro. I'm very upset with all the new flexibilities and whatnot in this OS, but never used one music wise. Could you please help advise or make detailed comparison, which of the two OS (win 7 vs win 10) is more reliable for production as I find it hard to get used to and optimize at the best possible way the Win 10 at all. And with the reviews on the new works at Win 11 I still hesitate a lot to upgrade. I was even seriously thinking to jump on a Mac OS Laptop even though it will take me a lot of time to get used to that OS.

I use a ThinkPad X201 (8GB ram, I5-540M) for any portable recording I need to do, as well as MIDI and basic mixing/editing, and it is perfect for that (I was surprised by how low the latency with a Scarlett 2i2 was!) Just put an SSD in so hopefully get more out of it. Highly recommended to anyone if that's all you need.
My main desktop is Haswell I7 4790 and still eats everything I throw at it even with the M.2s in it bottle-necking. With any type of SSDs you can DFD with most things (Kontakt, Spitfire, etc) so that is always something to keep in mind in regards to resources. My gpu is the thing showing it's age in my setup (Asus GTX 780OC) as have recently had to knock new games to high settings (😱) and DaVinci grumbles a bit on occasion. Will be interested to see what you have running in your main setup, though the new Intel tech will likely be out by the time I can upgrade 😂

    • @orryfishburne5326

RockBoyy i found it on Amazon. Im loving it so far. I havent really pushed my CPU with big projects yet, but from what i have thrown at it, it performs well. After i first installed all my software and get everything up and running i was experiencing audio drop outs, clicks and pops randomly even when my CPU was only at around 15%, but after i changed my advanced power settings, set the minimum CPU performance to 100% and closed out background apps like onedrive, the drop outs stopped and its been performing smoothly and very fast and snappy. From the research ive done, the latency related issues like drop outs are common on AMD due to their core architecture, so getting the intel version would prevent that. Its still a really nice computer and i like it a lot, it serves me well for what im using it for and once again after a couple tweaks in the settings, im not having any problems with it. I will warn u tho, the 45wh battery dies REALLY fast. Like mine is dead within 3-4 hours and more on the 3 hour mark. Having the CPU at 100% is probably why it's consuming power so fast, but Its not a problem for me since i keep it on my desk with my gear plugged into it. definitely dont recommend it for someone that plans on being mobile with it unless they buy it from Lenovo with the 80wh battery. The bigger battery covers the second drive slot so you wont be able to add more storage. This is my first experience with AMD and im actually impressed. the 8 core processor with a m.2 solid state drive, its the quickest PC ive ever owned. Im very confident that it will handle anything i will throw at it.

Hey, on the same mission here! For long time I've been thinking about a P15 (older gens: P50 to P53) without any postfix (like P15s or P15v), since they have the stronger Intel H processors. The have amazing durability and nearly everything about them is replacable, but at the cost of a pretty high price tag.
My biggest concern about them is the noise level, which isn't quite optimal for recording, so I've recently switched my focus over to Lenovo's Legion gaming laptops. They come with the newest AMD processors, that are even stronger than Intel's latest ones and actually are on the level of Intel's desktop processors, if you can trust the benchmark comparisons. They have a bigger focus on their cooling solutions on these gaming machines, that come with different modes like a quiet mode, so you don't have to be an advanced user and do things like undervolting for less noise from the fans.
I like to play games on it too, so a gaming GPU makes also a lot more sense to me than the more expensive workstation GPUs you get on P series. Only downside with them is the availability I think. But for the listed reasons also gaming laptops from other brands make sense (like the ASUS TUF model in this video).

Staying a couple generations behind is always wise, letting the “beta testers” take the hit. Fast is great, but STABILITY is better. I think it’s ALWAYS better to have some HEADROOM in your system. You don’t want to run your system flat out for every project. Thinking that having JUST ENOUGH is okay.
