Too early too far. A common mistake when musketeers. When you see cavalry, you worry firing too late and the cavalry charge and kill you, instead most make the mistake the other way, fire too early too far. Muskets take 15-20 second to load and a few more seconds to fire. Once you fired the first shot, you are a sitting duck for almost 30 seconds.
Chemicalkinetics the cavalry didn’t gallop much further after the began to fire themselves though. I get if it was a small line of musketeer and they miss the shot but that was a large ass double row line. It would’ve made more sense if it unhorse a couple instead of completely obliterating them from the gate.

The captain even specifically told the commander (of the foot musketeers commander): the enemies are not yet within distance. Only 3-4 horses were out the castle gate (you can see it at 1:18) and the rest were still behind the castle wall. Regardless, the commander ordered the firing and missed. That was more than 100 meters away based on the camera shot. They missed. Even if they didn't miss, they would have only hit 3-4 horses. Then, the cavalry moved in and shot (see 1:42 and 1:44). The cavalry matchlock are only 20-30 meters away.
