  • Hey all.
    So in this video I'm taking a first look a the Boss OD200 the recent Hybrid programmable dirt pedal offering from Boss. In short its brilliant.
    I'll be using this to replace a 2 pedal overdrive AIAB pedal for my main gain sounds and 2 fuzz pedals that are currently on my main gigging pedalboard. The 12 models combined with the 3 band EQ really means any drive sounds you want are available here. It's very impressive straight out of the box in that respect.
    Combine that with the onboard boost that again can be any one of those models as well as a few others means that it even makes gain stacking VERY possible.
    The sounds are all great. they do what the pedals they are modelling do very well as well as a few of Boss's own offerings. Really impressive stuff.
    This is the first of two videos where I go through the sounds on offer. I'll also be demonstrating the amazing functionality on offer using MIDI and the external jack for a exp pedal or extra two button footswitch in another video.
    For me its this functionality in MIDI situation that really brings out the best of the OD200.
    Overall its an extremely impressive piece of kit that really is very capable of replacing several dirt pedals.

      Hey. I get so many comments referring to the russel Crowe thing I can’t remember what this video’s one was. Genuinely just can’t see it myself. But I’ll take it all day.
      I’ve never compared it to the real pedals. I use 4 different sounds with and without boost on it. There is simply no way I could accommodate the space or be able to switch them on and off remotely so for me it’s not a consideration though I can see how it would be for others.
      If it sounds thin it’s probably a mid range thing. The beauty of this is when I get on a stage I quickly check the mid range EQ on all presets and tune it if I need to. Works a treat.
      It’s a great great pedal. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

      Hey Dave. Thx for the comment. I can’t make a video about this any time soon but it’s dead simple here is how to do it.
      1. Select the drive you want.
      2. Select the boost you want. Hit param button and use param knob select knob to cycle through the boost sounds. When you find the boost you want use the param switch and the param knob to set the pre and post levels of the boost. Then select whether you want the boost on or off on this preset by simply turning it on or off with the boost footswitch.
      3. When you have the drive / boost combo you like hold the memory button. Select slots 1-4 for the preset by tapping the memory button to cycle through. Hold the memory button to save.
      Done.

      @@TheGuitarEffect My brain was spinning, but I found a video that shows how to access more than just the 4 memories. It has to do with setting a parameter value for start and ending memories. For example in the video the guy set it for N-2 thru N-7 (6 memories). It's through the parameter button and you set the ETF (first N#) then the ETT (Extends to, last N#) So the yellow lights for memories stops working and you see the patch #'s in the display. Make sense? Maybe this will help some others out too.

    • @TheGuitarEffect
      @TheGuitarEffect  3 місяці тому +1

      I’ve looked around online as they don’t specify. There are two theories. One is that all the drives without the X are analog which I doubt I personally think the X drives are the ones that are boss native algorithms.
      The other theory is that the drives are actually all analog but controlled digitally. Again I doubt this. They’d be advertising that it if we’re true.
      I reckon it’s just the input had a preamp on it.

    My understanding is that Hybrid means, that the circuits are in analogue and the dials are in digital so the analogue sound is not affected in any way, while having the digital expansive controls over each parameter.

    Since you're the expert I have a question about adding a EHX Big Muff Op Amp pedal to my chain for stacking and by itself and where to put it. Right now I go Comp > EQ200 > OD200 > EQ200 > TS or other OD/DIST pedals to play with or just a lead boost > Front End of Amp. All effects are in my effects loop and at the very end is a Moen Buffalo Para EQ DI. So I tried the the EHX where the TS is, didn't work well behind the OD200. I value your opinion so let me have it before I tear my board apart, again. Everyday I'm learning more and more about the OD200 and it's been months now.

    • @TheGuitarEffect
      @TheGuitarEffect  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Dave. Thx for commenting. So I have many questions based on how I would use that setup.
      1. Are you using gain from the amp too?
      2. Do you not like the muff sound from the OD200? Fine if you don’t but just trying to understand what you want to do with it.
      3. Why the 2xEQ200 and then the Para EQ? That’s a lot of EQ. I personally find EQ is great but it can be very problematic in deciding what sound you are going for. Kinda like option paralysis.
      OK so to answer your question. I always put a muff last in the gain effects chain. Mainly because I want to colour it when stacking. So for example putting a Klon or TS before a muff fills out the mids if that’s what you want to do when stacking. I would say though, having the traditional mid scooped muff sound can occasionally be very useful if you want loads of dirt but still have room for a melody instrument or a vocal.
      I would caveat that by saying I never use a muff to play lead. I do t like them for that. I prefer a tone bender style fuzz for “fuzz” type stuff to me the big muff is a particular flavor of distortion. Not really a fuzz.
      Hope that helps

      Thanks for responding, Rob.
      1. Are you using gain from the amp too?
      I'm using the clean channel on my H&K 20, with the gain about 10 -11 o'clock, real clean still. And with some of my OD200 presets I might use the lead channel on the H&K for some lead stuff to just get a little distorted boost. I've been playing with the OD200 stacking the drives with some great results.
      2. Do you not like the muff sound from the OD200? Fine if you don’t but just trying to understand what you want to do with it.
      Yes and no. Honestly I've never used a fuzz before the OD200, but I've been learning about fuzzes and they're another tool for the box,, but I'm realizing how much it's used for some stuff I play, that little dirty sound. I prefer the controls on the Big Muff, it doesn't over complicate it. I play to such a variety of artists that I built my board to give me many options. I'm a analytical person so I'm always tweaking and seeing how far I can push things, adding pedals, swapping some pedals, ADHD 🤣
      3. Why the 2xEQ200 and then the Para EQ? That’s a lot of EQ. I personally find EQ is great but it can be very problematic in deciding what sound you are going for. Kinda like option paralysis.
      There was a video online, in depth with the EQ200 and he showed the benefits of running a pre and post EQ, the pre EQ is very subtle in its adjustments, most presets the pre-eq is not used or just slightly. Then after it goes through the OD200 and back into the EQ200 it's a whole nother monster, much more responsive to the sliders, more dramatic than the pre-eq, this is where I make my most adjustments. I don't over use the EQ on the OD200 either, none of my eq setting are extreme. I got the Para EQ because some of what I play I wasn't able to get the right tone, that one frequencies, this has helped tremendously plus it makes me sound fuller.
      4. I would caveat that by saying I never use a muff to play lead. I don't like them for that. I prefer a tone bender style fuzz for “fuzz” type stuff to me the big muff is a particular flavor of distortion. Not really a fuzz.
      I think you said it best here and that's what I'm mostly trying to do and enjoy using it as an add-on but not the main drive.
      I probably confused you even more, sorry. I think I'm going to have to pull everything off and do a test day trying various positions. Best case scenario I get used to the OD2-- fuzz and sell the Big Muff I just got for $40 in excellent condition, for that price I had to buy it. Wait until I asking about setting up a EV-5 🤣
      What drives are you using for your intro bit and how many guitars? A nice mix going on.

      @@TheGuitarEffect I hope you don't mind me asking questions? I'm going to rewatch your OD-200 videos and a few others tonight. I do remember why I wasn't impressed with the Fuzz on the OD, it was because you had to crank the volume way up, which seemed odd to me, but it's the same on the EHX. I've watched a lot on fuxx but I need more. It reminds me of how I didn't get or like the OD Centaur, never even heard of them, remember I took about a 20 year hiatus and I only used multi effects units. BUt now I'm using it quite a bit and really like it. So basically fuzz and klones are new to me, but I'm learning.

      @TheGuitarEffect  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey Dave. Sorry for the delayed reply. So I don’t find the Fuzz on the OD200 needs te volume cranked. But I do use it over a cleanish should rather than a driven sounds. I’ve always found that muffs need headroom for impact.

      @@TheGuitarEffect Yeah I've been playing around running a TS into it and like the results. Once things calm down here a bit I'm going dig into the OD200s fuzz more. You're probably right that it's just as good as other as the EHX I got. I watched your MIDI video the other day with the BOSS controller, I was impressed and you had me sold until I saw the price. Removing the EHX fuzz and Joyo TS from my board though will clear up some much needed space as I found the EQ & OD200 right next to each other makes it hard to step on the switches without hitting another accidentally.

      Hey. Thx for the comment. Ok, I get your point in theory but that assumes that all te models in this overdrive pedal or for that matter in any overdrive pedal are designed to simulate the sound of a naturally overdriven amp. Which most of them are not designed to do. Like, a boost or a transparent boost restive yes. But a fuzz? A tube screamer? A Klon. Not in my opinion. I never play with a totally clean sound. I use the one verse ice sounds with that sound to colour the sound and add gain as I need it for specific situations. Not just to make the amp more distorted in the same way.
